Juristic Consideration On The Separation Of Religion And Politics And Civil Religion, Hiroshi Nitta Mar 2024

Juristic Consideration On The Separation Of Religion And Politics And Civil Religion, Hiroshi Nitta

Japanese Society and Culture

The separation of church and state is the separation of state power from religion. It prohibits the establishment of a state religion and the suppression of other religions. Whereas the First Amendment to the US Constitution prohibits the establishment of a state religion, the Japanese Constitution does not stipulate the separation of church and state in the clear terms. The second sentence of Article 20,Paragraph 1,Article 20,Paragraph 3,and Article 89 are the basis for this provision.

The separation of church and state means a division between the church and state, or the abolition of a state religion, and not the …

Abolish R(Ice): (Dis)Ability, Immigration, And Asian American Resistance, Vivian S. Tran Mar 2024

Abolish R(Ice): (Dis)Ability, Immigration, And Asian American Resistance, Vivian S. Tran

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

In 2021, Minneapolis-based Khmer artist, Kat Eng designed the “Abolish r(ICE)” t-shirt as part of a fundraiser for Southeast Asians and their families experiencing deportation. Inspired by the iconic Three Ladies Brand jasmine rice bag, Eng re-imagined the three ladies as freedom fighters in response to heightened immigration policing and detention of Southeast Asian communities. In this paper, I unpack and contextualize the Abolish r(ICE) t-shirt campaign within immigration debates, the contemporary abolitionist movement, and Asian American resistance. The Abolish r(ICE) shirts also function as a form of political education and an invitation specifically to Asian American youth to learn …

Minnesotan Morals: Hmong, Somali, And Afghan Refugees And The Future Of Statewide Sanctuary Policy, Rachel Colson Mar 2024

Minnesotan Morals: Hmong, Somali, And Afghan Refugees And The Future Of Statewide Sanctuary Policy, Rachel Colson

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

Amidst animosity, tension, and discomfort over the politics and realities of immigration in the United States, Minnesota provides reprieve. The state’s attitudes towards and infrastructure for immigrant communities are distinctly positive. Despite its reputation as a safe haven, in 2021, the state legislature declined to formally adopt the label of “Sanctuary state” proposed in both houses. Sanctuary states, localities, or policies are those that refuse to follow national, often harsh, immigration law. This paper explores the rise of the Sanctuary Movement in the United States in relation to the current, politicized understanding of Sanctuary policy. Using Hmong, Somali, and Afghan …

The Unrealized Promise Of College-In-Prison: Financial Hurdles To Reenrollment And Completion In The Era Of Pell Reinstatement, Julia Bowling, Pavithra Nagarajan, Kristen Parsons, Neal A. Palmer Mar 2024

The Unrealized Promise Of College-In-Prison: Financial Hurdles To Reenrollment And Completion In The Era Of Pell Reinstatement, Julia Bowling, Pavithra Nagarajan, Kristen Parsons, Neal A. Palmer

Journal of Student Financial Aid

College-in-prison programs are positioned to expand substantially under the reinstatement of Pell Grant eligibility for people in prison. While this change will enable more students who have been systemically excluded from higher education to attend college, degree completion is rare during incarceration and post-release. Student perspectives can shed light on both the value of college-in-prison and the financial barriers to realizing its value. This study analyzes data from 12 focus groups with 105 total college-in-prison student participants, 114 student survey responses, and 45 stakeholder interviews. The data were collected between 2018-2022 during a process evaluation of the College-in-Prison Reentry Initiative, …

Well-Being And Contexts Of Development Of U.S. Citizen Children In Mexico Following Parental Deportation Or Voluntary Relocation, Luis H. Zayas, Alejandra Garcia Isaza, Jaime Fuentes-Balderrama, María Elena Rivera-Heredia Mar 2024

Well-Being And Contexts Of Development Of U.S. Citizen Children In Mexico Following Parental Deportation Or Voluntary Relocation, Luis H. Zayas, Alejandra Garcia Isaza, Jaime Fuentes-Balderrama, María Elena Rivera-Heredia

School of Social Work Faculty Publications

When undocumented immigrant parents are deported from the United States, they must decide whether or not to take their U.S.-born and undocumented immigrant children with them, often to countries the children have never visited or know little about. Other parents do not wait to be deported by the government and decide to relocate to their home countries with or without their children. Both sets of families experience relocation but under different circumstances. These differences deserve exploration to understand the psychological and emotional effects on children's well-being. In this cross-sectional study, we explored differences in self-concept, internalizing and externalizing behaviors, as …

Facilitating Fast Emergency Wi-Fi Access In An Openroaming Environment, Malcolm Smith, Scott Ross Blue, Matthew S Macpherson

Defensive Publications Series

Wi-Fi 7 has introduced the Emergency Preparedness Communication Service (EPCS) in support of End-to-End (E2E) Multimedia Priority Services Communications (MPS), which provides preferred or prioritized channel access (PCA) over public/private Wi-Fi networks in emergency service (ES) or enhanced 911 (E911) scenarios. While EPCS may be useful in providing a priority/Quality of Service (QoS) in ES/E911 scenarios, the service does not address challenges of fast access to a wireless local area network (WLAN) in certain environments, such OpenRoaming environments. This proposal provides techniques through which OpenRoaming can be extended to support EPCS in a straightforward manner that can improve service access …

The Wild, Wild West Of Laboratory Developed Tests, John Gilmore Mar 2024

The Wild, Wild West Of Laboratory Developed Tests, John Gilmore

Washington and Lee Law Review Online

Since the 1950’s, scientists have built novel technologies to screen for genetic diseases and other biological irregularities. Recently, researchers have developed a method called “liquid biopsy” (as opposed to a standard tissue biopsy) that uses a liquid sample (e.g., blood) to non‑invasively spot biomarkers indicating different types of cancers in the patient’s body. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has fully cleared a small number of liquid biopsy tests under its rigorous and expensive review process, most biotech companies have instead followed a less restrictive regulatory path through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which label …

Confidence In Crises: School Nurses' Perceptions Of Self-Efficacy In Active Shooter Emergency Preparedness, Titilayo Idowu Mar 2024

Confidence In Crises: School Nurses' Perceptions Of Self-Efficacy In Active Shooter Emergency Preparedness, Titilayo Idowu

Dissertations

The incidence and number of mass school shootings have increased since the first reported school shooting in 1840. Since then, extensive research has been conducted to explore school violence's underlying causes and precursors, resulting in many recommendations for preventative and mitigating practices. However, no national standard or legislation currently dictates the minimal requirements for competencies and training among school nurses in preparation for active shooter incidents. This interpretive qualitative phenomenological study was conducted to explore the lived experiences of postlicensure K-12 school nurses regarding their self-efficacy and confidence to prevent, protect, mitigate, respond, and recover from a school shooting incident. …

Road Maintenance Through Machine Learning, Yashwanth Sai Rachala Mar 2024

Road Maintenance Through Machine Learning, Yashwanth Sai Rachala

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the use of machine learning techniques for road infrastructure maintenance. We propose an innovative machine learning-based approach to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of road maintenance strategies. The focal point of this investigation is the development and implementation of a machine learning framework to enhance road quality monitoring. We use Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks to accurately predict future road conditions and identify potential areas requiring maintenance before significant deterioration occurs. This predictive approach is designed to enable a shift from reactive to proactive road maintenance, optimizing the use of limited resources and improving overall road safety. …

Participation Mandatory, Learning Not Required: A Phenomenological Study Of Diversity Training In Education And Law Enforcement, Jamie Martin, Tabari Asim Coleman, Toni J. Fall, Crystal L. Isom, Jennifer L. Niebrzydoski

Dissertations

This study provides a timely, qualitative exploration of the perceived efficacy of cultural competency training for both law enforcement officers and educators. It comprises 18 semi-structured interviews, 10 of which were conducted with education professionals and 8 with law enforcement officers. Drawing four main themes from the interview sample, findings show participants held a complex perception of training efficacy. Interviews featured multiple anecdotes from participants concerning the application of culturally competency skills, as well as important takeaways concerning their desired topics/format of professional development sessions and their favored characteristics of facilitator approach. Our analysis further reveals implications of participants’ identity …
