Development Of A Uav-Based Detection And Tracking Pipeline In Simulation Environment, Hunter Ayers, Hakki Erhan Sevil
Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics
Object detection and tracking are essential for particular applications especially with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). This study focuses on developing a pipeline of an advanced detection and tracking system specifically for use in UAVs, leveraging the capabilities of AirSim. The use of AirSim allows for a more meticulous examination and refinement of targeting theories, thanks to the controlled conditions of the simulation. The project utilizes the YOLO (You Only Look Once) algorithm for object detection and tracking through contour boxes. The experiment results show successful detection and tracking capability of the UAV. The developed pipeline can be used for various …

Robotic Ad-Hoc Networks, Marius Silaghi, Khulud Alawaji, Mohammed Alghamdi, Akram Alghanmi, Ameerah Alsulami
Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics
Practical robotic adhoc networks (RANETs), a type of mobile wireless adhoc networks (WANETs) supporting the WiFi-Direct modes common in internet of things and phone devices, is proposed based on a strategy of exploiting WiFi-Direct connection modes to overcome hardware restrictions. For a certain period of time the community was enthusiastic about the endless opportunities in fair, robust, efficient, and cheap communication created by the Adhoc mode of the WiFi IEEE 802.11 independent basic service set (IBSS) configuration that required no dedicated access points. The mode was a main enabler of wireless Adhoc networks (WANETS). This communication mode unfortunately did not …

Comprehensive Review Of Distracted Driving Programs In The United States, Keenan P. Hubbard, Amelia K. Lawson, Nolan J. Metz, Kiara R, Meggit-Goff, Charles H. Hruda, Jacob D. Wilhelm
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
With advances in technology throughout the course of time, distracted driving is at an all-time high in the United States. Even with high numbers, distraction is likely underreported because the behavior is difficult to detect during crash investigation, and police reports likely understate its incidents. According to NHTSA’s newest analysis of 2021 fatal crash data, fatalities in distraction-affected crashes increased by 12% from 2020 to 2021, a total of 8.2% of all fatalities reported. The impact of distracted driving has recently worsened. A study estimated distraction was involved in 29% of all crashes by observing driver behavior in the real …

[Re]Mapping Resilience: Reimagining Urban Waterfronts In The Face Of Climate Change, Brandon Bernard
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
By the year 2100, southern-Florida is projected to experience a 1-2 meter rise in sea level, resulting in the lower portion of the state becoming almost completely submerged under a new watertable.[14] During the 19th and 20th centuries, the city of Miami developed rapidly and the community and economy inevitably became intertwined with the water and its ecology. Due to the growing population and economy, urban developments soared and led to low-lying areas being filled in, open space along waterways were claimed for commercial and residential buildings, and man-made islands such as the venetian islands were constructed. As a result, …

Re-Offense To Re-Integration, Re-Imagining The West County Detention Facility, Madison Frei
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
ABSTRACT
In the United States today, the incarceration experience has become entirely barbaric and inhumane. Basic needs are neglected, drug smuggling runs rampant, and the mental health crisis within the system is worse than ever before. The re-offense rate for formerly incarcerated people is one of the highest in the world. These issues stem from poor design choices meant to provide minimal social interaction between inmates, little to no privacy, and limited access to programmatic uses that contribute to the betterment of mental health. Building prisons better suited for rehabilitation instead of punishment will not only lower this statistic, but …

Rock To Renewal - Depleted Quarry Revitalization, Daija Laney
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Healing the wounds of the earth and its people through the revitalization of depleted quarries Revitalizing depleted quarries is essential for healing both the scars on the earth's landscape and the adverse effects on local communities. Despite their necessity for construction, quarries often leave lasting negative impacts, diminishing the quality of life for nearby residents and harming the environment repeatedly. This thesis advocates for a comprehensive approach to revitalizing the depleted quarries by, integrating ecological restoration, economic redevelopment, and community engagement through an architectural lens. By implementing these restoration techniques and incorporating architectural design principles driven by ecological, social, and …
Police Officers’ Coping Styles And Occupational Stressors Impacting Self-Regulation In Adult Offspring, Dannie Analese Garcia
Police Officers’ Coping Styles And Occupational Stressors Impacting Self-Regulation In Adult Offspring, Dannie Analese Garcia
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Police work, a high stress occupation with increased risks and adverse events, often leads to strain between work and family. Work-family conflict (WFC) has been shown to mediate coping with stress. In addition, offspring of law enforcement officers (LEOs) may learn self-regulation by observing parental stress coping and attempting to alleviate stress for their parent. Three theoretical frameworks were used in this study: WFC, spill-over cross-over model, and family systems theory. Using a quantitative design, surveys were completed by 35 parent-adult offspring pairs, with more LEO parent respondents (N = 71) than adult offspring respondents (N = 43). Linear regression …

From Injustice To Social Justice Education: The Journey Of Formerly Incarcerated Women Of Color In Community College, Hossna Sadat Ahadi
Dissertations
There is a growing rate of women of color in the U.S. prison system—their intersectional identities are hypercriminalized surrounding the nexus of oppressive barriers they experience (Annamma, 2017). The lack of awareness, understanding, and advocacy for carceral-impacted women of color in higher education has engendered an erasure. This qualitative research study explored and elevated the lived experiences and intersectional identities of formerly incarcerated women of color in postsecondary education. Through the lens of Latino critical race theory (LatCrit) and Chicana feminism, four methods of data collection took place—surveys, cajitas, testimonios, and reflective journaling. Formerly incarcerated women of color experienced the …

Square One Station: Atlanta's New Multi-Modal Passenger Terminal, Mariya Georgieva
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
The Atlanta Journal Constitution Building and its block is located in arguably the most historically significant area to Atlanta: The Gulch. Being so close to the original Zero Milepost location, this is where the City of Atlanta was founded. The Gulch started out as the center of downtown’s business district, but has since steadily declined in popularity, initially triggered by people moving out to suburban homes
Even after multiple attempts to revive the area, it proved unsuccessful. This is best illustrated by the fact that the city lost money on the property even during big events like the 1996 Olympics …

With the tides of modernity, the internet offers people the chance to communicate to their friends, families and to the world. Through the growing influence of social media, information is easily accessible in various forms such as articles, advertisements and memes, thus predisposing their social biases. In order to promote inspiration and change, activists use social media to awaken social media users by highlighting the national and global inequalities. However, Rider University professor Dr. John Suler speculates the online disinhibition effect, the unrestrained means of online communication, strengthens social polarization and online deception. To find the extent of the online …
Boundaries Of Autonomy: Exploring Parallels Between Mental Hospitals And Prisons In The United States, Benjamin J. Boldt
Boundaries Of Autonomy: Exploring Parallels Between Mental Hospitals And Prisons In The United States, Benjamin J. Boldt
The Agora
Within the United States, a prevailing perception emerges that mental health facilities and prisons are unfavorably similar. This societal sentiment is quite concerning if true, as the prison system is known for its many societal failures within the U.S. Furthermore, mental hospitals aim to help individuals; thus, a comparison to a faulty system highlights a possible issue worthy of exploration. Unfortunately, little analysis exists, within academic research, comparing both institutions. The following comparative analysis looks at available research between mental hospitals and prisons to validate this issue and explore implications. Findings indicate a shared pattern between mental hospitals and prisons …

Case Study Analysis: Exploring Johnson & Johnson's 1982 Tylenol Contamination Crisis And Ongoing Talcum Powder Crisis Through The Six Principles Of Crisis And Emergency Risk Communication, Caroline Tibbs
Honors Theses
In 2002, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed a new field of communication, called Crisis and Emergency Risk Communication (CERC). With the creation of this new field, the CDC developed a streamlined CERC guidebook in order to provide a standard for the crisis communication strategies and responses of specifically healthcare organizations, but any organization can benefit from utilizing the CERC framework. The CDC also identified six key principles of CERC, which are as follows: response time (“be first”), accuracy (“be right”), credibility (“be credible”), having empathy (“express empathy”), promotion of actions (“promote actions”), and respectfulness (“show respect”). …

Mammalian Roadkill Trends In Central Georgia, Lucy Beck
Biology Theses
Wildlife-vehicle collisions are a global concern for both wildlife conservation and driver safety, and knowledge of spatiotemporal trends are required in order to effectively mitigate these consequences. This study documents species composition and spatiotemporal trends in terrestrial mammalian roadkill using ten-years of data recorded along a 12.8 mile stretch of State Route 212 in Baldwin and Putnam Counties, Georgia. From January 1 2012 to December 31 2021, 2,263 roadkilled vertebrates were observed on the survey route, and terrestrial mammals accounted for 84% of the observations. Two methods of hotspot identification indicated a non-random spatial distribution of roadkill associated with physical …
Application Of Biochar / Bentonite Based Admixtures In Reinforced Concrete For Corrosion Prevention, Jacob Fleury
Application Of Biochar / Bentonite Based Admixtures In Reinforced Concrete For Corrosion Prevention, Jacob Fleury
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Reinforced concrete systems are in many sectors of infrastructure. Due to a combination of elevated compressive strength from the cement and aggregates and tensile strength from the reinforcing steel, reinforced systems are favorable in construction applications where high strength is desired. However, while reinforced concrete is in service, it can be introduced to contaminants that cause corrosion. Contaminants can leach through the porous matrix of the concrete structure and influence initiation of corrosion products on reinforcement. Corrosion is the primary cause for advanced deterioration of concrete structures. Concrete deterioration has promoted research efforts for the protection of future systems. This …
Recidivism In South Dakota, Allison L. Young
Recidivism In South Dakota, Allison L. Young
Honors Thesis
The South Dakota Criminal Justice System suffers from a high recidivism rate across the state. There are few resocialization methods used within state facilities, and the existing ones have not adequately addressed what is causing the high rate. People who are either incarcerated or were formerly incarcerated have a myriad of systematic barriers that prevent them from finding a stable footing before and after release. This literature analysis aims to compare existing resocialization methods among various countries and states to South Dakota’s techniques to identify which would be most successful for the state. Using a grounded-theory structure for the analysis …
