Between Visits: Hindu Domestic Religiosity, Home Shrines, And Thirdspace In The Diaspora, Aarti Patel

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation analyzes the importance of the domestic sphere as a site for the transmission and development of an individual devotional disposition for Swaminarayan Hindus living in the United States and Canada. Focusing on Hindus in the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) community living in Canada and the United States, this dissertation presents a new direction for existing scholarship of Hinduism in the public sphere by arguing for a more holistic study of how Hindus living outside of India develop and maintain a religious identity in their daily lives in the domestic sphere, both collectively as a family and …

Using A Digital Entertainment Tax To Strengthen Local Information Infrastructure In The United States: A Conceptual Exploration, Lee Shaker, Antoine Haywood May 2024

Using A Digital Entertainment Tax To Strengthen Local Information Infrastructure In The United States: A Conceptual Exploration, Lee Shaker, Antoine Haywood

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

As traditional local media decline, how might state and local governments provide support for local information infrastructure? We offer a proposal for states (or communities) to tax digital entertainment and then leverage existing community media centers (CMCs) to facilitate the distribution of the proceeds to local media outlets. Compared to other public subsidy plans, this approach is viable nationwide without federal action and offers several advantages that could lead to more immediate and durable support for local information infrastructure. To contextualize our proposal, we model both the possible revenue generation and distribution of funding that would result from its implementation.

On March 7, 2015, Larry Ball was cited for trespassing by the Lincoln Police Department when passing out religious leaflets outside the Pinnacle Bank Arena. Ball brought action against the City of Lincoln, Nebraska along with Pinnacle Bank/Spectator Management Group ("SMG"), alleging a violation of his First Amendment rights. More specifically, he claimed SMG violated his constitutional rights by denying his exercise of free speech based upon the premise that public property is a nonpublic forum. The District Court was tasked with evaluating Pinnacle Bank Arena's Exterior Access and Use Policy to determine whether Ball's First Amendment rights were violated. …

Closing The Circle: The Need For Patient Outcomes In The Prehospital Setting, Sydney Key May 2024

Closing The Circle: The Need For Patient Outcomes In The Prehospital Setting, Sydney Key

Honors Theses

The integration of EMS into the healthcare system is relatively new compared to other fields like nursing. As a result, there has been a scarce amount of research performed in the prehospital setting. This research focused on studying the effects of giving detailed feedback to prehospital providers by evaluating the improvements in provider mental health and patient outcomes in cardiac arrest patients. Prehospital providers rarely receive patient outcomes from hospitals. Oftentimes, when someone is experiencing a life-threatening event, EMS providers are forced to “load-and-go” from the point of patient contact, transport drop them to the nearest appropriate hospital, and turn …

A Federal Inmate’S Right To Stay Home, Jordan Thorn May 2024

A Federal Inmate’S Right To Stay Home, Jordan Thorn

Texas A&M Law Review

Since the start of the COVID–19 pandemic, the Federal Bureau of Prisons (“BOP”) has, for the first time in history, placed tens of thousands of inmates onto home confinement. Likely due to the unprecedented nature and rapid release of inmates to contain the virus, the BOP failed to timely update their policies and procedures surrounding the disciplinary system of inmates on home confinement. This failure to update resulted in the BOP removing inmates from home confinement and placing them back in prison for minor violations. Furthermore, when the BOP chose to remove an inmate from home confinement, it did so …

Successive But Not Successful: Does The Aedpa Allow Federal Prisoners To Reassert Previously Presented Claims For Habeas Relief?, Michael P. Bitgood May 2024

Successive But Not Successful: Does The Aedpa Allow Federal Prisoners To Reassert Previously Presented Claims For Habeas Relief?, Michael P. Bitgood

Texas A&M Law Review

The Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996 (AEDPA) unequivocally bars state prisoners from reasserting previously presented claims for habeas relief. Currently, the circuits are embroiled in a disagreement regarding whether the AEDPA also bars federal prisoners in the same way, and federal prisoners’ potentially viable claims for habeas relief hang in the balance. Prior to the Ninth Circuit’s decision in Jones v. United States, six circuits agreed that the AEDPA does bar federal prisoners’ previously asserted habeas claims, but the Sixth Circuit alone disagreed. Now, the Jones decision aligns the Ninth Circuit with the Sixth Circuit’s position. …

Self-Defense And Political Rage, Erin Sheley May 2024

Self-Defense And Political Rage, Erin Sheley

Texas A&M Law Review

This Article considers how American political polarization and the substantive issues driving it raise unique challenges for adjudicating self-defense claims in contexts of political protest. We live in an age where roughly a quarter of the population believes it is at least sometimes justifiable to use violence in defense of political positions, making political partisans somewhat more likely to pose a genuine threat of bodily harm to opponents. Furthermore, the psychological literature shows that people are more likely to perceive threats from people with whom they politically disagree and that juries tend to evaluate reasonableness claims according to their own …

The Climate Moratorium, Keith H. Hirokawa, Cinnamon P. Carlarne May 2024

The Climate Moratorium, Keith H. Hirokawa, Cinnamon P. Carlarne

Texas A&M Law Review

Climate change is our new reality. The impacts of climatic changes, including massive forest fires, floods, drought, severe storms, saltwater intrusion, and the resulting migration of people displaced by such impacts, will continue to ravage communities across the nation into the foreseeable future. In the meantime, communities continue to expand and growth continues unabated in many of the most climate-impacted areas. Given that most communities are unprepared for the onslaught of climate disasters and many continue to increase existing community vulnerabilities through unsustainable growth and development practices, we need legal tools that will provide space to engage in effective adaptation …

The Impact Of The Master Schedule On Student Perception Of Teacher-Student Relationships In Minnesota Middle Schools, Jonathon Graff May 2024

The Impact Of The Master Schedule On Student Perception Of Teacher-Student Relationships In Minnesota Middle Schools, Jonathon Graff

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Teacher-student relationships have been shown to have a marked decline at the transition to middle school (Hughes & Cao, 2018). The decline has been linked to a potential mismatch between middle school structure and the unique needs of the young adolescents that they serve (Eccles et al., 1993). This quantitative, correlational study explored the impact of school master schedules (i.e., school structure) on teacher-student relationships (i.e., TSRs) in Minnesota middle schools. The study searched for potential associations between student perceived teacher care and master scheduling type with the intent to fill a gap in literature and to help inform district …

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Human performance can be critically impacted by fatigue resulting from inadequate sleep. In a technological society, the consequences of fatigue related inattention or impaired response time are greater than ever. Industries such as aviation, rail, trucking, and medicine are mandated to have a Fatigue Management System (FMS) in place to ensure their personnel are ready for duty. We are testing the idea that a commercial, off the shelf (COTS) smart watch application using a new biomathematical model can provide continuous, obvious, real-time predictions about the wearer’s level of fatigue impairment. Our evidence shows that the correlation between a clinically approved …

Role Of Dunc-13 Isoforms In Alcohol Sensitivity In Drosophila, Makenzie Havard May 2024

Role Of Dunc-13 Isoforms In Alcohol Sensitivity In Drosophila, Makenzie Havard

Honors Theses

Functional alcohol tolerance is an adaptation made by the nervous system to high doses of alcohol, and is seen by a significant reduction in sensitivity to this drug. This tolerance is a significant contributing factor in the progression to Alcohol Use Disorders. A major goal of alcohol research is to understand how alcohol induces this tolerance. Dunc13 is a presynaptic active zone protein essential in synaptic vesicle docking and priming. Alcohol binds to the C1 domain of Dunc13 at physiological concentrations, which inhibits Dunc13 from binding Diacylglycerol. This inhibition is predicted to reduce Dunc13 activity and presynaptic activity. Yet, genetically …
