Returnees’ Perspectives Of The Adverse Impact Of Forced Displacement On Children, Itunu O. Ilesanmi, Jasmine D. Haynes, Florence O. Ogundimu
Faculty Publications
Conflict-related forced displacement, characterized by the experiences of witnessing violent acts, bombing, torture, separation, and the execution of family members, can severely and negatively impact a child’s social determinants of health (SDOH). These experiences are both direct and indirect forms of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and urgent attention is needed to understand the impact of forced displacement on children, who are a vulnerable group, and to develop interventions for all systems that influence the child. This phenomenological qualitative study involved in-depth interviews based on the experiences of returnees (n = 20), who are parents of children who experienced forced displacement. …

Strategies To Mitigate Cyberattacks In Oil And Gas Companies In North America, Ekumbo Martin Ndorh
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Cyberattacks on oil and gas companies in North America are increasingly sophisticated, threaten critical operations, and cause business leaders to deploy security knowledge through compliance and participation that could improve productivity positively and reduce cost. Grounded in the protection motivation theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to explore strategies business managers of oil and gas companies in North America use to mitigate cyberattacks. The participants included six business managers from five oil and gas companies. Data were collected using semistructured interviews and publicly accessible sources. Thematic analysis of the data generated five themes: (a) identification, (b) protection, …

Neutrosophic Logic To Navigate Uncertainty Of Security Events In Mexico, Mohammad Saif Wajid, Hugo Terashima Marin, Mohd Anas Wajid, Florentin Smarandache, Satya Bhushan Verma, Mohammad Kaif Wajid
Neutrosophic Logic To Navigate Uncertainty Of Security Events In Mexico, Mohammad Saif Wajid, Hugo Terashima Marin, Mohd Anas Wajid, Florentin Smarandache, Satya Bhushan Verma, Mohammad Kaif Wajid
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
A significant degree of uncertainty surrounds security events in Mexico because of the interaction of multiple socioeconomic and political elements. Conventional probabilistic and logical approaches frequently fall short of properly handling this uncertainty. To effectively navigate and manage security incidents in Mexico, this study suggests applying neutrosophic logic, an extension of classical logic that allows for indeterminacy and partial knowledge. Neutrosophic logic provides a more adaptable framework for making decisions in uncertain contexts by simultaneously handling true, false, and indeterminate values. In this study, we have created a neutrosophic-based model that includes metrics like social unrest, economic instability, and crime …

Indiana Time Law And Its Detrimental Effects, John F. Gaski
Indiana Time Law And Its Detrimental Effects, John F. Gaski
The Geographical Bulletin
The most enduring and contentious public policy issue in Indiana history may be the seemingly prosaic matter of “what time is it?” This analysis focuses on the implications of the State of Indiana’s recent change to daylight-saving time in conjunction with near-statewide Eastern time . I argue that the economic and commercial basis for the new temporal regimen is erroneous, and that its educational and humane implications are substantial . Finally, I outline a proposal for resolution of these issues . Although the concentration here is the Indiana situation, lessons are generalizable to other states, counties, and regions facing similar …

Rebuilding Risk Assessment Tools And Evaluating Their Effect On Recidivism In Illinois, Cristina Penate
Rebuilding Risk Assessment Tools And Evaluating Their Effect On Recidivism In Illinois, Cristina Penate
Master's Theses
This study seeks to examine the relationship between alternative measures of criminal history and recidivism in a cohort of convicted individuals released from prison in Illinois between 2010 and 2015. The current study expands on prior research by examining the relationship between prior criminal history and recidivism using alternative measures of both to account for potential bias resulting from differential policing activities that may lead to convictions. Traditionally, risk assessment instruments have relied on an individual’s total prior convictions for any offense and any re-arrest after release from prison. The current research developed a more nuanced measure of prior convictions …

Strategies Cybersecurity Professionals Use To Mitigate Cybersecurity Threats In Small Businesses, Michael Bert Branham
Strategies Cybersecurity Professionals Use To Mitigate Cybersecurity Threats In Small Businesses, Michael Bert Branham
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Small business owners are concerned about incorporating security best practices, security frameworks, and critical business functions into a cybersecurity strategy, which is necessary to adapt to the increased sophistication and occurrence of cyber-attacks. Grounded in Von Bertalanffy’s general system theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic study was to explore strategies cybersecurity professionals use to mitigate cybersecurity threats in small businesses. A sample of 14 security professionals on LinkedIn shared their perspectives on how cybersecurity strategies successfully mitigated recent cybersecurity threats. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, and data analysis was performed by coding keywords, phrases, and methods. The following …
Enhancing Imputation Accuracy: A Multi-Faceted Approach For Missing Data In Chicago Arrest Records, Steve Bramhall, Jae Chung, Nicholas Mueller
Enhancing Imputation Accuracy: A Multi-Faceted Approach For Missing Data In Chicago Arrest Records, Steve Bramhall, Jae Chung, Nicholas Mueller
SMU Data Science Review
This paper introduces a novel approach to enhance the imputation process for missing data, utilizing crime records from Chicago with arrests as the target feature. Robust imputation techniques are crucial in the era of burgeoning datasets for generating reliable insights. Our core objective is to present an innovative method that improves imputation techniques, augmenting model performance and bolstering the reliability of analytical outcomes. Leveraging numeric crime data, we establish a Gradient Boosting (GBM) baseline model, then introduce ensemble methods including Random Forest and Decision Trees for further refinement. By systematically exploring multiple imputation processes, we establish a baseline for comparative …
The Foodpunk City: Advancing Portland's Food Security Through A Shared Ideology Of Adaptation & Resistance, Nickolas Hash
The Foodpunk City: Advancing Portland's Food Security Through A Shared Ideology Of Adaptation & Resistance, Nickolas Hash
Dissertations and Theses
Food injustice is a form of violence perpetrated by state and corporate actors against a constituency under their governing power, particularly impacting marginalized and impoverished communities. It denies individuals access to nutritious food, perpetuating cycles of poverty, inequality, physical health risks, and social exclusion. Grassroots movements have emerged to challenge dominant paradigms and advocate for food sovereignty, agroecology, and food anarchy. In Portland, the movement represents a nontraditional approach to food security that closely resembles the reactionary ideology of urban "punk" culture. Both groups prioritize community autonomy over food systems, sustainable agricultural practices, and resistance to oppressive structures that perpetuate …
