Cars Don’T Stop For Yellow Lights: Turning Maine’S Yellow Flag Law Red, Jamison Rhoads-Doyle
Cars Don’T Stop For Yellow Lights: Turning Maine’S Yellow Flag Law Red, Jamison Rhoads-Doyle
Maine Law Review
This Case Note is about Maine’s Extreme Risk Protection Order law, Title 34-B, Section 3862-A, of the Maine Revised Statutes. The purpose of Maine’s law and others like it is to proactively take firearms away from individuals who present a substantial risk of violently harming themselves or others. In the aftermath of the mass shooting which occurred in Lewiston, Maine on October 25, 2023, there was debate over whether law enforcement could have used Section 3862-A to proactively prevent the shooting, as well as over whether Section 3862-A was an effective tool for preventing violence in the first place. This …

Stress As A Means Of Success: Investigating The Effect Of Stress Appraisals On Willpower, Ego Depletion, And Physiological Responses In College Students, Anna Minor
Honors College Theses
Stress impacts our emotions, cognition, behavior, and health. Although stress is abundant and unavoidable, recent research suggests our perception of stress can strongly influence its outcomes. The Biopsychosocial Model of Challenge and Threat (BPS) states that we appraise a stressful scenario in one of two ways: challenge or threat. A challenge appraisal involves a positive perception of stress and is associated with lower physiological output while a threat appraisal involves a negative perception of stress and increased physiological arousal. The current research seeks to apply the BPS to a cognitive task and consider its relation to willpower, ego depletion, and …

Successful Leadership Strategies Used By Front-Line Leaders In Crises, Robi Washington
Successful Leadership Strategies Used By Front-Line Leaders In Crises, Robi Washington
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Unskilled front-line leaders in the production industry can contribute to operational inefficiencies and delays in crisis response. Effective crisis management requires front-line leaders to employ evidence-based leadership strategies that enhance organizational resilience. Grounded in the transformational leadership theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to explore successful leadership strategies front-line leaders use for crisis management. The participants were seven front-line leaders in the central Mississippi production industry who successfully implemented leadership strategies for crisis management. Data were collected using semistructured virtual interviews and a review of public documents related to crisis management, public safety policies, and code of …

Free Space Optical Communications: Challenges, Mitigation Techniques, Classification Framework, And Standardization, Moataz Mohamed Roshdy, Ahmed Hosny Elghandour, Kamel Mohamed Hassan
Future Engineering Journal
Over the past several years, there has been a renewed interest in Free Space Optical (FSO) communication technology, commonly referred to as Optical Wireless Communications (OWC). FSO is sometimes viewed as a substitute for current technology, such radio frequency. In other situations, FSO is viewed as a potent contender to work in tandem and complement next-generation technology, such 5G wireless networks. FSO technology is therefore widely used in a variety of indoor (such as data centers), terrestrial (such as mobile networks), space (such as intersatellite and deep space communication), and underwater systems (such as underwater sensing). Nevertheless, despite the enormous …
Calling On Congress: Use The Spending Clause To Keep Juveniles In Juvenile Court, Erin Fitzgerald
Calling On Congress: Use The Spending Clause To Keep Juveniles In Juvenile Court, Erin Fitzgerald
Pepperdine Law Review
Recently, juvenile justice reformers have had great success in expanding the reach of the juvenile court. Over the last two decades, many states have raised their age of majority, bringing older teens and young adults under the jurisdictional umbrella of the juvenile court. Likewise, many states have amended their transfer statutes, making transferring juveniles from juvenile court to adult criminal court more difficult. The success of these reforms is largely due to the relentless work of dedicated juvenile justice advocates and scholars. The “raise-the-age” movement and work to limit juvenile transfers has undoubtedly helped to retain more youthful offenders within …

Faa Eagle Avgas Transition: Considerations For Impacts On Alaskan Supply Chains, Michael S. Jones, Alfred Bill Allen
Faa Eagle Avgas Transition: Considerations For Impacts On Alaskan Supply Chains, Michael S. Jones, Alfred Bill Allen
ISER Reports
Federal bodies have called for a directed transition away from 100 octane low lead aviation gas (100LL avgas) due to public health concerns. Leaded avgas currently powers piston engine aircraft in general aviation and air taxi fleets, serving both recreational and commercial purposes. In considering the unleaded avgas transition, we must acknowledge that public policy frequently generates unintended consequences that reduce anticipated net benefits for subgroups of the population. Particular attention should be placed on regions which are heavily reliant on piston aircraft for core commercial services to remote environments, and where infrastructure adjustments are highly complex and costly. Alaska …

Traffic stops are the most common form of police-initiated contact with members of the public. The sheer volume of traffic stops combined with their use as a pretext to surveil Black and Latiné communities has generated substantial scholarship and movements for police reform. Yet this commentary assumes that the subjects of traffic stops are U.S. citizens. At the same time, scholarship on the intersection of criminal and immigration law and the convergence of their enforcement methods focuses on traffic stops as the immediate entry point for removal proceedings. This Article addresses the gap in literature by describing the experience of …

BACKGROUND: The August 2023 wildfire in the town of Lāhainā on the island of Maui in Hawai'i caused catastrophic damage, affecting thousands of residents, and killing 102 people. Social media platforms, particularly TikTok, have become essential tools for crisis communication during disasters, providing real-time crisis updates, mobilizing relief efforts, and addressing misinformation. Understanding how disaster-related content is disseminated and engaged with on these platforms can inform strategies for improving emergency communication and community resilience.
OBJECTIVE: Guided by Social-Mediated Crisis Communication theory, this study examined TikTok posts related to the Maui wildfires to assess content themes, public engagement, and the effectiveness …
Hemp And Marijuana: The Necessity Of Lab Testing For Fair Prosecutions, Jessica Aycock
Hemp And Marijuana: The Necessity Of Lab Testing For Fair Prosecutions, Jessica Aycock
Pace Law Review
This Article examines the evidentiary and ethical challenges prosecutors nationwide face in distinguishing between hemp and marijuana under current federal and state laws. Following the legalization of hemp under the federal 2018 Farm Bill, the legal distinction between hemp and marijuana now hinges on the concentration of delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This distinction requires quantitative lab testing to be established. Without quantitative lab testing, prosecutors cannot accurately determine THC levels, making it challenging, if not impossible, to meet the burden of proof required for marijuana possession convictions. This Article argues that the absence of testing raises evidentiary and ethical concerns that …
