Chimeras are unique in that they have both human and animal cells. Taking this into account, I also discuss the current regulatory structure and legal protections which provide a framework for the regulation of chimera research. Moral Panic Or Public Health Crisis? Lessons From Drugs And Gambling For “Addictive” Design, Matthew B. Lawrence, Haomin (Kevin) Yan

Seattle University Law Review

Alcohol, automobiles, guns, lottery, loot boxes, meat, music, opioid painkillers, processed foods, prop bets, slot machines, television, tobacco, violent video games. Over the last century each of these has been subject to concerns—some might even say “moral panics”—from parents and policymakers about avoidable harms to kids and adults. In some cases we look back with the benefit of hindsight and dismiss those concerns as naïve or moralistic. In others we look back at them as justified or as having come too late to check an expanding industry before it did unfathomable harm while growing so powerful that it became all …

Utilizing Deep Learning And Object-Based Image Analysis To Search For Low-Head Dams In Indiana, Usa, Brian M. Crookston, Caitlin R. Arnold

Publications

Although low-head dams in the USA provide water supply, irrigation, and recreation opportunities, many are unknown by regulators. Unfortunately, hundreds of drownings occur each decade at these dams from an entrapment current that can form immediately downstream. To explore the ability of deep learning to scan large areas of terrain to identify the locations of low-head dams, ArcGIS Pro and embedded deep learning models for object-based image analysis were investigated. The State of Indiana low-head dam dataset was selected for model training and validation. Aerial imagery (leaf-off conditions) captured from 2016 to 2018 for the nearly 94,000 km2 area …

Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) is routinely contacted for technical advice and assistance in addressing real or perceived human-wildlife conflict across the state. Improved understanding of patterns of conflict between humans and wildlife in urban ecosystems can help to identify ways to reduce perceived conflict and guide targeted education and outreach campaigns to benefit human-wildlife coexistence in urban areas. We analyzed 2,874 reports of human conflict with wildlife received by ODFW wildlife biologists in the Portland metro area from 2022-2024. Our objectives were to 1) identify the wildlife species most frequently involved in real or perceived conflict …

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

The coronavirus pandemic shaped challenges for marginalized groups. Specifically, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer (LGBTQ+) people experienced community-building constraints, notably in predominantly rural regions. People are also navigating digital geographies, or online social environments, in novel ways to develop virtual communities in the face of prejudice, discrimination, and potential trauma. Through a minority coping approach, the present study explored LGBTQ+ people’s experiences navigating the dynamics of digital geographies during the pandemic while residing in socially conservative, highly rural physical spaces where they may be exposed to vicarious trauma. Using qualitative semi-structured interviews, data were gathered from 43 LGBTQ+ identifying …

Financial Metrics As Predictors Of Financial Vulnerability And Nonprofit Failure, Yossi Haimberg

Dissertations and Theses

Studying nonprofit's risk factors for financial vulnerability and possible demise is important because of the negative social consequences for both the failed organization and its stockholders. Financial vulnerability is a concern shared by all nonprofit's stakeholders as poor financial health affects nonprofit's ability to fulfill its mission, sustain its operations, and in many cases may result in a nonprofit demise. Advance knowledge on financial vulnerability has significant implications for nonprofit's leaders to develop corrective strategies to prevent failure.

Nonprofit scholars such as Tuckman and Chang, Greenlee, Hager, and Searing have contributed notable benchmarks in the field of nonprofit vulnerability, by …

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"This study proposes to investigate how public views on the wrongful conviction issue are connected with the perceived need for criminal justice reform and whether the professional experience in law enforcement influences these perceptions. This study employs a qualitative research design, deriving its conclusions from the comparative analysis of the survey responses concerning the issue of wrongful convictions and the criminal justice system collected from 45 law enforcement professionals and 35 individuals without such experience. On The Frontline: How Public Library Workers Experience Florida’S Increasing Social Inequality, Jordan P. Rogers

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As public libraries tend to reflect the needs and interests of their communities, this qualitative study explores how growing local physical and sociodemographic changes affect public libraries in metropolitan areas and the experiences of staff. Interviews with nine library workers from four densely populated counties in the U.S. state of Florida gave insight into the hypervisibility of inequality within and between public libraries, as well as the effects of this inequality on the libraries and their staff. The local changes that participants reported included population growth, constant development, gentrification, rising rents, and increased homelessness and affluence. Staff had diverse experiences …

The Impact Of On-The-Job Traumatic Events From The Perspective Of African American Law Enforcement Officers, Stefanie Marie Hadley Mar 2025

The Impact Of On-The-Job Traumatic Events From The Perspective Of African American Law Enforcement Officers, Stefanie Marie Hadley

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Most law enforcement officers (LEOs) enter their profession with the intent to positively impact their communities. However, the emotional and psychological toll of their work often goes unaddressed, leaving officers to navigate repeated exposure to trauma with limited support or preparation. While research has examined the effects of trauma on LEOs, there remains a gap in understanding the impact on African American LEOs. This study explored the effects of frequent on-the-job traumatic events from the perspective of African American LEOs and the barriers to seeking mental health treatment. Guided by social cognitive theory and rational choice theory, this qualitative study …

The present study’s objective was to clarify risk-factors associated with increased likelihood of sleep disorders and treatment avoidance in student-athletes. Methods: Data were self-reported survey responses related to sleep disorders, from US college/university varsity athletes (n=51,882) completing the 2011-2019 National College Health Assessments (NCHA). Outcomes: The primary outcomes that we …

Just Kids: Establishing A Minimum Age Of Jurisdiction In Maine’S Juvenile Court, Allie Smith Mar 2025

Just Kids: Establishing A Minimum Age Of Jurisdiction In Maine’S Juvenile Court, Allie Smith

Maine Law Review

In Maine, there is no such thing as a child too young to be prosecuted. Maine’s Juvenile Code grants the juvenile court jurisdiction over a child of any age, even one who would have been considered too young to prosecute in the fifteenth century. As of 2024, just over half of states in the country have rejected this approach and established minimum ages of jurisdiction for their juvenile courts. These minimum age laws protect the youngest, least culpable, and least competent children from prosecution, and generally require states to respond to young children through services rather than punishment. This Comment …
