The Relationship Between The Light And Dark Triads Of Personality, Covid-19 Threat, And Covid-19 Vaccine Status In College Students, Alyssa M. Howard, Terry F. Pettijohn Ii
Psychology
The rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States was due, or at least in part, to the resistance to health guidelines, minimal to no safety measures implemented by nearly half the U.S. citizens, and, to a lesser extent, the initial lack of understanding into the pathogenic mode of transmission. The present study examined links between the Dark (i.e.., narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism) and Light (i.e.., compassion, empathy, altruism) Triad of personality traits, the perceived threat level of COVID-19, and COVID-19 vaccine uptake in an undergraduate college sample (N = 147). The study found no statistically significant differences in …

Heat Camps: Juvenile Curfews, Extreme Heat & The Eighth Amendment, Norrinda Brown
Heat Camps: Juvenile Curfews, Extreme Heat & The Eighth Amendment, Norrinda Brown
Washington and Lee Law Review
For decades, in the summertime, America has confined certain of its youth in what are essentially open-air heat camps. In city after city, camp-form is established through the enactment of warm-weather juvenile curfews which keep the youth at home or in state-sponsored centers during summer nights and, increasingly, during days as well. Local governments justify these curfews with general notions of “public safety,” including to protect the youth they confine. But the laws are not benevolent. Reducing youth mobility by curfew results in exclusion, oversurveillance, and potentially lethal heat punishment of the youth, possibly in violation of the Eighth Amendment. …
Analysis Of Vision Transformers And Domain Adaptation In Long-Range Facial Recognition, Zachary Michael Swanson
Analysis Of Vision Transformers And Domain Adaptation In Long-Range Facial Recognition, Zachary Michael Swanson
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Atmospheric turbulence presents a significant barrier to long-range facial recognition, introducing severe geometric distortions and blur that degrade image quality. This thesis investigates deep learning approaches for mitigating these effects, with a focus on transformer based architectures and domain adaptation strategies.
An in-depth benchmarking study was performed using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and vision transformers (ViTs) on the Husker BRIAR Research Collection from up to 500m (HBRC-500) face dataset. The results demonstrated that vision transformers, particularly hierarchical vision transformers like the shifted-window (Swin) transformer, outperform CNN-based models at long distances due to their ability to model global spatial relationships and …
The Literary Games We Play: Science Fiction In The Teaching Of Secondary Science, Luiza Roos
The Literary Games We Play: Science Fiction In The Teaching Of Secondary Science, Luiza Roos
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
This project responds to a need for interdisciplinary approaches that merge literacy development with scientific inquiry, recognizing the challenges of engaging diverse learners in complex ecological and evolutionary content. Drawing from research in fiction-based learning (Wong et al., 2024), science fiction and science pedagogy (Bixler, 2007), role-playing games in education (Cheville, 2016), and culturally responsive teaching (Rodriguez & Morrison, 2019), the project aims to make science more accessible, inclusive, and relevant to students’ lived experiences. This capstone explores how science fiction novels, specifically The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi, can be effectively integrated into a secondary science curriculum to …

Jme4110: Hydro-Excavator Robot, Diane L. Evans, Nathan Fenton, Grant Cole, Nicholas Sipe
Washington University / UMSL Mechanical Engineering Design Project JME 4110
In an environmental situation wherein, diesel has leaked into soil surrounding high voltage lines in an underground confined space where workers cannot access physically and for safety reasons. To alleviate the situation, the project goal is to create a remotely controlled robot, with umbilical attachments. Due to the nature of the environment containing sensitive and electrically charged equipment, mechanical means of removing the soil are not feasible. For this reason, the robot is to remove contaminated soil by using a powerful water sprayer and vacuum combination. Other options for features of this robot are that it uses tracks for movement, …

The Indian Pharmacopoeia: Enabling Open Access And Crafting A ‘Sovereign Function Exception’ For Government Works, Aparajita Lath
National Law School Journal
Standardisation of drugs and access to such standards are important levers for effective drug regulation. The Indian Pharmacopoeia, the official book of standards for drugs in the country prescribed by the Union government under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940, are legally binding and enforceable. Not only do the standards have the force of law but are also government-created. The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), a division of the Union Department of Health and Family Welfare, has a legal monopoly over creating and publishing this compendium. Though it is legally binding, the Indian Pharmacopoeia is neither in the public domain …

Exploring Kosovo's Need For A Technology-Driven Offset Strategy, Alba Cikaqi
Theses
At a time where technological innovation is redefining national security, Kosovo risks falling behind by failing to adopt emerging technologies for defense and security. This research addresses that vulnerability by exploring the need for a dedicated national strategy as a solution. Drawing on global best practices, including the United States Offset Strategy, NATO frameworks, and innovation models from the Baltic countries, the study outlines a potential path forward. Additionally, through qualitative analysis, including interviews with key stakeholders across public, private, and academic sectors, this study looks into the opportunities and challenges of developing a context-specific strategy for integrating emerging technologies …

Introduction
Opioid-related mortality continues to claim tens of thousands of American lives annually. Medicaid plays an outsized role in financing opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment, paying for almost 40% of all Americans who received OUD treatment in 2017. Methods
Using Medicaid T-MSIS Analytic Files data and a novel data set of Medicaid managed care organization (MCO) plan coverage, we examined the relationship between comprehensiveness of benefits for OUD treatment provided by Medicaid MCO plans and the likelihood of OUD diagnosis and medications for OUD (MOUD) receipt among newly enrolled Medicaid beneficiaries in Kentucky. We use two stage least squares to …

Data-Driven Police Profiling, Christopher Slobogin
Data-Driven Police Profiling, Christopher Slobogin
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Police departments increasingly rely on algorithms and other data- driven methods of identifying high-crime areas andpeople who are at high risk for involvement in crime. This Article examines several constitutional obstacles to this type ofpolicing. First, to the extent that these algorithms rely on data entitled to privacy protection, they may violate the Fourth Amendment. Second, the steps police take in response to a "hot" place or person designation must also be subject to constitutional regulation. Further, the principle of legality should prohibit the police from acting on any risk designation, even one that is very likely accurate, in the …

The Role Of Private Law In Promoting Building Safety: The Case Of Singapore, Edward S. W. Ti
The Role Of Private Law In Promoting Building Safety: The Case Of Singapore, Edward S. W. Ti
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Singapore is a tiny granite rock situated just north of the equator. Lacking land, and indeed any kind of natural resource, means that the trend for urban development in the city-state will always be densifi cation; 96 per cent of residents in Singapore already live in multi-owned housing, ie high-rise apartments. 1 Singapore is also a rapidly greying nation. 2 It has been observed that persons over 70 years old are four times more vulnerable in the event of a fi re, 3 and fi re safety is a critical aspect of building safety. Going Gray Too Early? Effects Of Color On Facial Identification, Roman M. Pardo
Going Gray Too Early? Effects Of Color On Facial Identification, Roman M. Pardo
Masters Theses (Archived)
This study investigated a possible bias in face-matching and ID-screening decision making- color incongruity (i.e., one face image presented in color and one in grayscale). Expanding on previous research, the 2x2 mixed methods experiment incorporated eye tracking measures (i.e., fixations). Participants N= 25 were randomly assigned to compare color or grayscale IDs (between groups comparison) to a 10 s color video of a person moving their head side to side. The task consisted of 2 practice and 48 face-matching trials with medium prevalence (MP, 24 match, 24 mismatch) presented as one of four pseudo-random and counterbalanced orders. Signal detection …
The Collision Course Between Outdated State Laws And Automated Vehicles, Wililam Hubbard, Colin Starger
The Collision Course Between Outdated State Laws And Automated Vehicles, Wililam Hubbard, Colin Starger
Cardozo Law Review
America stands at the precipice of a vehicular revolution. Myriads of self-driving vehicles—often referred to as “automated vehicles” or “AVs”—are already rolling out across the nation, and innovators assert that AVs will make our roads safer, less congested, and more economically productive. However, reaching these dreams of self-driving utopias will require more than just technological progress. The uses of traditional vehicles are heavily regulated by hundreds of thousands of state laws that ensure public safety, health, and order. Will these traditional laws still make sense when AVs shift the paradigm? Despite the hype and optimism of many AV advocates, this …
