Last Friday, September 22, Golden State Warrior’s player Stephen Curry had a press conference during the Warriors’ Media Day. This year’s Media Day marks the unofficial start of the 2017-2018 basketball season where the players pose for photos, record promotional materials, and hold press conferences. During Curry’s press conference, he was asked about what statement he would like to make by declining the White House’s invitation after winning an NBA championship this past June. Curry’s response was straightforward, “By acting and not going, hopefully that will inspire some change when it comes to what we tolerate in this country[.]” Of …

What Do Supervision Officers Do? Adult Probation/Parole Officer Workloads In A Rural Western State, Adam K. Matz
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
For several decades time studies have been used as a decision-making tool in criminal justice settings to assist in staffing allocation decisions. Despite their prevalence, these studies have rarely been documented in empirical journals or subjected to peer-review. Publication bias is a likely issue, with only those providing favorable results reaching a public audience. This study reviews the literature and documents a time study of probation and parole officer workloads conducted in a rural Western state. Results reveal probation and parole rely heavily on office-based interactions with probationers and parolees. An over-reliance on compliance enforcement, substantiated by other research in …

Removing Dams, Constructing Science: Coproduction Of Undammed Riverscapes By Politics, Finance, Environment, Society And Technology, Zbigniew J. Grabowski, Ashlie Denton, Mary Ann Rozance, Marissa Matsler, Sarah Kidd
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
Dam removal in the United States has continued to increase in pace and scope, transitioning from a dam-safety engineering practice to an integral component of many large-scale river restoration programmes. At the same time, knowledge around dam removals remains fragmented by disciplinary silos and a lack of knowledge transfer between communities of practice around dam removal and academia. Here we argue that dam removal science, as a study of large restoration-oriented infrastructure interventions, requires the construction of an interdisciplinary framework to integrate knowledge relevant to decision-making on dam removal. Drawing upon infrastructure studies, relational theories of coproduction of knowledge and …
Take Me Out To The Ball Game? The Effect Of Crime On Major League Baseball Game Attendance, Allison Jakubek
Take Me Out To The Ball Game? The Effect Of Crime On Major League Baseball Game Attendance, Allison Jakubek
Undergraduate Economic Review
Major League Baseball attendance has been examined since the league’s establishment in 1869. Winning percentage, opponent quality, and stadium quality have all been deemed significant determinants of increasing attendance, but deterring factors have yet to be closely examined. Since a majority of professional sports stadiums are constructed in economically poor, crime ridden areas, it seems natural to assume that crime could have an impact on people’s desire to attend Major League Baseball games. Panel data collected on twenty-eight teams over the course of ten years was used to determine whether or not crime rates have a significant effect on attendance.

Faculty Publications
Record clearance allows some individuals to redesignate or remove certain minor convictions from their criminal records. This interview-based study finds that both men and women seek opportunities for personal gain through record clearance, but women are more motivated by moral and religious influences and concern about reputation. Women are also more likely than men to acknowledge personal flaws, and to desire to replace criminal identities with law-abiding identities. As women redefine their identities, caregiving is especially important as a personal obligation and professional aspiration. Record clearance is particularly compatible with women’s motivations, willingness to change, and personal and professional goals.

Mercy Versus Fear, Or Where The Law On Migration Stands, Gilbert Paul Carrasco, Iryna Zaverukha
Mercy Versus Fear, Or Where The Law On Migration Stands, Gilbert Paul Carrasco, Iryna Zaverukha
Seattle University Law Review
The theme of this Article contrasts the perspective of Papa Francisco on the subject of migration, juxtaposing his blueprint of mercy as the point of departure, with the oppositional resistance, which is based on various dimensions of fear. This perspective will be contextualized within the framework of both American immigration law and within the parameters of international human rights and transnational migration. Part I of this Article will consider the paradigm of mercy and fear in light of the various provisions of federal American immigration law in their historical context. It will recount many of the restrictive and nativist episodes …

The Prolonged Arm Of The Law: Fourth Amendment Principles, The Maynard Decision, And The Need For A New Warrant For Electronic Tracking, R. Reeve Wood Iii
The Prolonged Arm Of The Law: Fourth Amendment Principles, The Maynard Decision, And The Need For A New Warrant For Electronic Tracking, R. Reeve Wood Iii
Maine Law Review
This article examines the decision in United States v. Maynard as well as the simultaneous emergence of a vocal set of magistrate judges advocating for Fourth Amendment protection for cell phone location information. It argues that, even if the Maynard rationale is widely adopted and the use of tracking devices is found to be a search, the Fourth Amendment principles of specificity and limited discretion on the part of government officers mean that the warrant frameworks currently in use will not provide adequate protection from the threat of government officers obtaining information for which they have not demonstrated a need. …
