Beveled-Shaped Super-Wideband Planar Antenna, Umair Rafique, Sami Ud Din Jan 2018

Beveled-Shaped Super-Wideband Planar Antenna, Umair Rafique, Sami Ud Din

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a design of beveled-shaped planar antenna has been presented for super-wideband applications. The proposed antenna consists of a beveled-shaped radiator, a tapered microstrip feed line, a partial ground plane and two ground planes on the top side of the substrate. The top ground planes are used to match the impedance at lower frequencies and to minimize spurious radiations caused by the feed line. A tapered feed line has been utilized to enhance the overall bandwidth of an antenna. It has been observed from results that a ratio bandwidth of 66.6:1 has been achieved from 0.3 to 20 …

Balance Of Limits And Experimentation, Viangri Sontay L. Jan 2018

Balance Of Limits And Experimentation, Viangri Sontay L.

Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects

In science, there is an equilibrium between advancements in knowledge, ethics, and reason. Equilibrium is when two contrary sides are in balance and, typically, once one side becomes disproportionate, there will be a disturbance. In the novel Frankenstein, Mary Shelley portrays how going beyond the limits of science can cause a disturbance to human nature. One of the main characters, Victor Frankenstein, fabricated a living creature out of unliving parts. Victor is displeased with the result, leaving the Creature neglected and destined to feel loathing toward his creator. The consequences of seeking glory brought about torture. Aside from providing entertainment, …

Making Connections With The Wire: Telling The Stories Behind The Statistics, Rachel E. Barkow Jan 2018

Making Connections With The Wire: Telling The Stories Behind The Statistics, Rachel E. Barkow

Faculty Articles

The reality of human nature is that facts and statistics do not move people to action — stories and personal connections do. Narratives, more than raw numbers, help people see the relationship between social and economic inequality and crime. For most Americans, the stories that have informed their view of criminal justice have created the misleading impression that many, if not most, people who commit crimes are violent by nature and unredeemable. With that perception, the statistics cannot break through because the public incorrectly believes the people in prison must all deserve to be there and retribution and public safety …

Administrative Constitutionalism In Immigration Law, Alina Das Jan 2018

Administrative Constitutionalism In Immigration Law, Alina Das

Faculty Articles

The direct application of constitutional norms in immigration law has long been stymied by unique doctrinal and institutional barriers. Scholarship has focused on the role that federal courts may play in indirectly advancing constitutional norms through statutory interpretation and the use of subconstitutional norms in immigration cases. Despite the limited role of federal courts vis-à-vis the administrative state in the shaping of immigration law, less attention has been paid to the role of the executive branch in this arena. This Article addresses and critiques the current state of administrative constitutionalism in immigration law. As this Article describes, the executive branch …

Limiting The National Right To Exclude, Katrina M. Wyman Jan 2018

Limiting The National Right To Exclude, Katrina M. Wyman

Faculty Articles

This essay argues that the robust right to exclude that nation states currently enjoy will be harder to justify in an era of climate change. Similar to landowners, nation states have virtual monopolies over portions of the earth. However, the right of landowner to control who enters their land is considerably more constrained than the right of nation states to control who enters their territory. Climate change will alter the areas of the earth suitable for human habitation and the broad right of nation states to exclude will be more difficult to justify in this new environment.

Neutral Ground Or Battleground? Hidden History, Tourism, And Spatial (In)Justice In The New Orleans French Quarter, Lynnell L. Thomas Jan 2018

Neutral Ground Or Battleground? Hidden History, Tourism, And Spatial (In)Justice In The New Orleans French Quarter, Lynnell L. Thomas

American Studies Faculty Publication Series

In 2017, the city of New Orleans removed four monuments that paid homage to the city’s Confederate past. The removal came after contentious public debate and decades of intermittent grassroots protests. Despite the public process, details about the removal were closely guarded in the wake of death threats, vandalism, lawsuits, and organized resistance by monument supporters. Workers hired to dismantle the monuments did so surreptitiously under the cloak of darkness, protected by a heavy police presence, with their faces covered to conceal their identities. The divisiveness of this debate and the removal lay bare the contestation over public space, historical …

Article Ii And Antidiscrimination Norms, Aziz Z. Huq Jan 2018

Article Ii And Antidiscrimination Norms, Aziz Z. Huq

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

The Supreme Court’s judgment in Trump v. Hawai’i validated a prohibition on entry to the United States from several largely Muslim-majority countries, and at the same time repudiated a longstanding precedent associated with the Japanese-American internment of World War II. This Article closely analyzes the relationship of these twin holdings. It uses their dichotomous valances as a lens onto the legal scope for discriminatory action by the federal executive. Parsing the various ways in which the internment of the 1940s and the 2017 exclusion order can be reconciled, the Article identifies a generative tension between the two holdings. Contrary to …

Criminal Justice, Inc., John Rappaport Jan 2018

Criminal Justice, Inc., John Rappaport

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

In the past decade, major retailers nationwide have begun to employ a private, for-profit system to settle criminal disputes, extracting payment from shoplifting suspects in exchange for a promise not to call the police. This Article examines what retailers’ decisions reveal about our public system of criminal justice and the concerns of the agents who run it, the victims who rely on it, and the suspects whose lives it alters. The private policing of commercial spaces is well known, as is private incarceration of convicted offenders. This Article is the first, however, to document how industry has penetrated new parts …

How The Lone Star State's Refusal To Expand Medicaid Is Leaving Pregnant Women More Alone Than Ever, Naomi Strauss Jan 2018

How The Lone Star State's Refusal To Expand Medicaid Is Leaving Pregnant Women More Alone Than Ever, Naomi Strauss

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Texas's maternal mortality rates are alarmingly high, reflecting a larger trend across the United States. By analyzing structural and social factors, this Note suggests that increasingly restrictive access to family planning and women's health clinics across Texas has contributed to this public health crisis. Further complicating matters, the limited availability of quality maternal health data makes it hard to disentangle causes and effects. In order to correct this disturbing trend which stands in stark contrast to the rest of the developed world-states should expand Medicaid coverage and access to services for all. California, for example, has implemented programs, which have …

The Disarming Of The Kearney State College Police Force During The Era Of Civil Rights And Vietnam, Cannon Marchand

Undergraduate Research Journal

Today, the University of Nebraska at Kearney Police Department is one of few unarmed campus police departments in the country. Even so, UNK PD is a certified police department with full police powers. Officers derive their authority from the State of Nebraska as Special Deputy Sheriffs, but only after graduating the State of Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center. Officers must also receive continual training each year to maintain certification. With that training and certification, UNK PD officers are obligated to maintain safety and security for all people and property at the university. Members of UNK PD are expected to enforce …

Mental Health In U.S. Prisons: How Our System Is Set Up For Failure, Katherine Daifotis Jan 2018

Mental Health In U.S. Prisons: How Our System Is Set Up For Failure, Katherine Daifotis

CMC Senior Theses

During the past 60 years, United States prisons have become one of the primary institutions caring for mentally ill individuals. Factors such as privatization of mental health care with a focus on profit-maximization, ineffective jail diversion programs, and unsuccessful mental health courts have contributed to prisons having an increased population of mentally ill inmates. In fact, about 20% of people who are currently incarcerated suffer from a major mental illness (Mason, 2007). Other elements outside of the justice system such as a lack of mental health awareness and a lack of resources have led to damaging interactions between the mentally …

The Effects Of Bringing An Nba Franchise To A City On Employment: A Case Study Of Memphis, Oklahoma City, Orlando, Sacramento, And Salt Lake City, Ravi Shah

CMC Senior Theses

This paper utilizes a case study approach to explain the impact of having a franchise from the National Basketball Association (NBA) move to a city where a team from the four major American sports league had not existed on employment levels. This paper utilizes the synthetic control method to examine employment in Memphis, Oklahoma City, Orlando, Sacramento, and Salt Lake City. Applying the synthetic control method, this paper finds that employment is not impacted positively as the stadium proposals suggest they will when putting forth subsidy bids. Due to the large costs imposed on taxpayers as a result of the …

A Critical Analysis Of Humanitarian Intervention As A Source Of Reputational Credibility, Margaux Arntson Jan 2018

A Critical Analysis Of Humanitarian Intervention As A Source Of Reputational Credibility, Margaux Arntson

CMC Senior Theses

Since his election into office, a cloud of uncertainty has surrounded President Trump’s foreign policy ambitions. Much of today’s scholarship concerns its unpredictable nature and scope. President Trump, like previous presidents who have come before him, entered office with very little foreign policy experience. A key feature of his non-principled, fast-alternating foreign policy is that few people know exactly what he is going to propose next in terms of his international strategy. Coupled with this strategy is Trump’s desire for international credibility and a strong reputation. This desire seems fundamentally at odds with his foreign policy strategy, as Trump proposes …

Access To Knowledge And The Global Abortion Policies Database, Joanna Erdman, Brooke Johnson Jan 2018

Access To Knowledge And The Global Abortion Policies Database, Joanna Erdman, Brooke Johnson

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

Research shows that women, healthcare providers, and even policy makers worldwide have limited or inaccurate knowledge of the abortion law and policies in their country. These knowledge gaps sometimes stem from the vague and broad terms of the law, which breed uncertainty and even conflict when unaccompanied by accessible regulation or guidelines. Inconsistency across national law and policy further impedes safe and evidence‐based practice. This lack of transparency creates a crisis of accountability. Those seeking care cannot know their legal entitlements, service providers cannot practice with legal protection, and governments can escape legal responsibility for the adverse effects of their …

National Security, Immigration And The Muslim Bans, Shoba Wadhia

Faculty Scholarship

National security language has continued to guide the creation and defense of Executive Orders and related immigration policies issued in the Donald J. Trump administration. This Article builds on earlier scholarship examining the relationship between national security and immigration in the wake of September 11, 2001, under the Obama administration, and during the campaign leading to the 2016 Election. While the Article is largely descriptive, it ultimately questions the longevity of using national security to create and defend immigration law. This Article is limited in scope -- it does not provide a deep dive into the constitutionality of the Muslim …

The Quest For Justice For Victims Of Terrorism: International Law And The Immunity Of States In Canada And The United States, Karinne Lantz Jan 2018

The Quest For Justice For Victims Of Terrorism: International Law And The Immunity Of States In Canada And The United States, Karinne Lantz

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

The paper begins with an overview of international law and the principle of state immunity, which is included to provide a necessary introduction for readers who are unfamiliar with these topics. Part two assesses the practice of Canada and the United States by examining the legislated exceptions to state immunity that allows claims against foreign states that sponsor terrorism, as well as the decision in Tracy (Appeal). Part three returns to international law and explores the decision of the ICJ in Jurisdictional Immunities. This examination calls into question whether, through Tracy (Appeal), Canada has violated Iran’s right to …
