The Gathering Storm: The Role Of White Nationalism In U.S. Politics, Genie A. Donley Jan 2018

The Gathering Storm: The Role Of White Nationalism In U.S. Politics, Genie A. Donley

ETD Archive

White nationalism has played a critical role in shaping United States politics for over 150 years. Since the Reconstruction era, whites have fought to maintain their power and superiority over minorities. They influenced U.S. politics by attempting, and in some cases succeeding, to prevent minorities from voting. Moreover, politicians began to help them. This became most evident in the 2016 U.S. presidential election when Republican Donald J. Trump appealed to racist white voters, gained their support, and won the election. Those voters, who united as the Alt-Right, supported Trump because he appealed to them by playing on their fear of …

Who’S In Charge Here? Exercising Authority In The Organization-Volunteer Relationship, Patricia A. Groble Jan 2018

Who’S In Charge Here? Exercising Authority In The Organization-Volunteer Relationship, Patricia A. Groble

ETD Archive

One facet of being a volunteer is the freedom to choose one’s work and schedule. When this ability to choose conflicts with the organization’s need to ensure that volunteers’ work activities fulfill its mission, it creates tension between staff members and volunteers and presents a challenge to the organization’s ability to exercise authority over its volunteers.

Existing research on volunteerism studies volunteer engagement, motivations, and best practices for managing volunteers, as well as how volunteers can be considered a sustainable resource. The volunteer management literature pays little attention, however, to authority’s role in the relationship between organizations and their volunteers. …

Ready For Data Analytics? Data Collection And Creation In Local Governments, Minyoung Ku, J. Ramon Gil-Garcia

Center for Technology in Government

A good understanding of local government data, particularly the contexts in which the data are collected and created, is essential in order for data guardians and users to effectively manage that data and to draw accurate and rich information from them. However, our knowledge of both local government data and data contexts is very limited, which poses a wide range of challenges to data initiatives inside and outside local governments, from open data to data analytics. This paper explores the mechanisms of data generation and the determinants of data contexts in local governments. To do so, we conducted an in-depth case study of …

Transitioning To Ccwis Compliance For Nys: Go Or No Go?, Theresa A. Pardo, Teresa Harrison, Nicolas Soto, Martha Avila Maravilla, Megan Sutherland

Center for Technology in Government

In June 2016, the federal Administration for Children and Families, Department of Health and Human Services (ACF) published a new federal rule defining the Comprehensive Child Welfare Information System (CCWIS) initiative which governs state and tribal Child Welfare (CW) information systems for the foreseeable future. In general, these CCWIS regulations, which are optional, allows state CW agencies greater flexibility to develop systems consistent with their practices and business needs by moving away from “data capture” to a “data maintenance” philosophy, as long as a copy of the data is stored and maintained in CCWIS, which must be the source of …

School Choice And Urban Residency: The Impact Of Expanded Choice On Camden Housing Decisions, Keith Eric Benson, Randy R. Miller Jan 2018

School Choice And Urban Residency: The Impact Of Expanded Choice On Camden Housing Decisions, Keith Eric Benson, Randy R. Miller

NERA Conference Proceedings 2018

This qualitative study investigates if, and how, both current and middle-class prospective Camden (NJ) residents’ housing decisions are impacted by increased school choice through Camden’s newly state-imposed Renaissance schools. Recent research suggests greater school choice options can attract and anchor middle-class families within larger, more cosmopolitan cities like New York, San Francisco, Atlanta, and Philadelphia. Here, with Camden’s smaller, post-industrial urban identity, study findings suggest participants' decision to live in Camden is largely unaffected by the offering of more choice school options. Current residents reported choosing to remain in Camden due to the city’s affordability and emotional connections to the …
