Storytelling: For Public Organizations, Jeffrey Valcin, Brittany Wilson, Vivian Miley

Media Literacy: How the Era of Fake News Affects Public Service

By definition, storytelling is just that – one who tells or writes stories (Dictionary.com, 2018). Why is this an important aspect in the public sector? Simply because it is universal. Stories are generated on a daily basis from government employees, politicians, citizens, and, of course, the media outlets (Van Hulst, 2014). While the end result of each story may vary, it is critical that as an individual or organization in the public sector you have the tools and support to not only share your own story, but to do it in the most effective manner possible. A quote attributable to …

Rainwater Capture And Purification System For Rural Tanzania, Audrey Gozali, Nathan Miyashiro, Matthew Sasaki

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering Senior Theses

The project was a rainwater capture and purification system for the Buturi community in rural northwestern Tanzania. Recent research indicates the northwestern communities in Tanzania will suffer greatly under the effects of climate change. Using this demonstrated need as impetus, the project created a long-term solution for water accessibility in a community of 57,000 villagers who currently live in extreme poverty. The team visited the Buturi community from March 24 to April 7, 2018 to install the project in the main village, the Makongoro village. The project installation took place at the Buturi Primary School and Community Center. Workshops with …

Role Of Floods On Sinkhole Occurrence In Covered Karst Terrains: Case Study Of The Orléans Area (France) During The 2016 Meteorological Event And Perspectives For Other Karst Environments, Gildas Noury, Jérôme Perrin, Li-Hua Luu, Pierre Philippe, Sébastien Gourdier Apr 2018

Role Of Floods On Sinkhole Occurrence In Covered Karst Terrains: Case Study Of The Orléans Area (France) During The 2016 Meteorological Event And Perspectives For Other Karst Environments, Gildas Noury, Jérôme Perrin, Li-Hua Luu, Pierre Philippe, Sébastien Gourdier

Sinkhole Conference 2018

The Loire River basin is regularly impacted by sinkholes because of its specific geological context, karstic limestone overlain by soft cover deposits. The intense rainfall event and the associated floods that occurred in this area in May and June 2016 triggered tens of sinkholes in a few square kilometers. At least 20 houses, one flood protection dyke of the Loire River and two highways were damaged by collapses. These events highlight not only the vulnerability of the area, especially in the case of a disastrous flood of the Loire River, but also the unexpected kinetics of the collapse process. Two …

Reforming The Summary Judgment Problem: The Consensus Requirement, Suja A. Thomas Apr 2018

Reforming The Summary Judgment Problem: The Consensus Requirement, Suja A. Thomas

Fordham Law Review

If one or more federal trial or appellate court judges disagree on whether summary judgment should be ordered, summary judgment can still be granted when an appellate majority finds in favor of summary judgment. The case will be dismissed, and a jury will not try it. Logically, however, should this occur? At least one judge has stated that a reasonable jury could find for the party against whom summary judgment has been ordered. In these situations where judges disagree on whether summary judgment should be granted, they often portray the case’s facts in very different ways—what I refer to as …

Linking Academic Excellence And Social Justice Through Community-Based Participatory Research, Lydia Voigt

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Naomi Yavneh Klos poses two questions for the NCHC community in her essay, “Thinking Critically, Acting Justly,” which appears in this issue of JNCHC: (1) how honors pedagogy/curriculum can engage the highestability and most motivated students in questions of social justice; and (2) how the honors curriculum can serve as a place of access, equity, and excellence in higher education. The University Honors Program (UHP) at Loyola University New Orleans has recently implemented several honors social justice seminars that have been experimenting with various approaches to these pedagogical, curricular, and programmatic questions. Violence and Democracy, an honors sociology/criminology seminar, not …

introduction

For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them. —Aristotle, The Nicomachean Ethics

Honors graduates have much to learn when transitioning into their first position after college. For instance, workplaces have an entirely different culture and set of expectations from undergraduate honors classrooms (Wendlandt & Rochlen). Furthermore, the skills they need to become successful employees or graduate students are different from those required of successful honors college students, with a greater emphasis on communication skills (Stevens) as one example.

Honors students are bright, curious, and hard-working (Achterberg), and honors programs give …

Living Water Church: Emergency Action Plan, Angela Hage Apr 2018

Living Water Church: Emergency Action Plan, Angela Hage

CUP Undergraduate Research

Fires, lockdowns, and active shooters are all too common in today’s world. In June 2017, a house in Waterbury Connecticut caught on fire while service was being held in the church adjacent to it (Stewart, 2017). In March 2018, a church in Mississippi was placed on lockdown while law enforcement officials used the grounds as a staging area during an active investigation (WAPT News, 2018). And in November 2017, a gunman opened fire inside First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. Twenty-six people lost their lives, and many more were gravely wounded in the deadliest mass shooting in an American …

Studying The Effect Of Froude Number And Densimetric Froude Number On Local Scours Around Circular Bridge Piers, Md Abdullah Al Faruque Apr 2018

Studying The Effect Of Froude Number And Densimetric Froude Number On Local Scours Around Circular Bridge Piers, Md Abdullah Al Faruque

Articles

A very large percentage of bridge failures are attributed to scouring around bridge piers and this directly influences public safety. Experiments are carried out in a 12-m long rectangular open channel flume made of transparent tempered glass. A 300 mm thick bed made up of sand particles is leveled horizontally to create the test bed and a 50 mm hollow plastic cylinder is used as a model bridge pier. Tests are carried out with varying flow depths and velocities. Data points of various scour parameters such as scour depth, width, and length are collected based on different flow conditions and …

A Comparative Study Of Karst Sinkhole Hazard Mapping Using Frequency Ratio And Artificial Neural Network For East Central Florida, Yongje Kim, Boo Hyun Nam Apr 2018

A Comparative Study Of Karst Sinkhole Hazard Mapping Using Frequency Ratio And Artificial Neural Network For East Central Florida, Yongje Kim, Boo Hyun Nam

Sinkhole Conference 2018

Sinkholes are one of the most common geohazards occurring in East Central Florida (ECF). Identifying areas prone to sinkholes is vital for land use planning in the ECF area, and thus, sinkhole hazard mapping plays a critical role. The present study presents (1) sinkhole hazard maps of ECF by using frequency ratio (FR) and artificial neural network (ANN) models and (2) a validation and comparison of the performance of two models. An inventory map with a total of 757 sinkhole locations was prepared from Florida subsidence incident reports (FSIR). 70% (530 sinkholes) were randomly selected to calibrate the sinkhole hazard …

Free Speech Hypocrisy: Campus Free Speech Conflicts And The Sub-Legal First Amendment, Christina E. Wells Apr 2018

Free Speech Hypocrisy: Campus Free Speech Conflicts And The Sub-Legal First Amendment, Christina E. Wells

Faculty Publications

This Article is modest in scope. It seeks primarily to illuminate the role of free speech conflicts, especially those involving contentious speech, within the Court's jurisprudence, and to illustrate how arguments characterizing the protestors' speech as censorship misperceive the important role such conflicts play. Using both the Court's doctrinal framework and conflict resolution literature, this article attempts to bring deeper understanding to the purposes for the Court's approach, the context underlying the current conflicts, and the flaws underlying the argument that the protestors' actions are censorial. Part I briefly reviews three illustrative free speech conflicts at the University of Missouri, …

The Prison To Homelessness Pipeline: Criminal Record Checks, Race, And Disparate Impact, Valerie Schneider Apr 2018

The Prison To Homelessness Pipeline: Criminal Record Checks, Race, And Disparate Impact, Valerie Schneider

Indiana Law Journal

Study after study has shown that securing housing upon release from prison is critical to reducing the likelihood of recidivism,1 yet those with criminal records— a population that disproportionately consists of racial minorities—are routinely denied access to housing, even if their offense was minor and was shown to have no bearing on whether the applicant would be likely to be a successful renter. In April of 2016, the Office of General Counsel for the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) issued much anticipated guidance dealing directly with the racially disparate impact of barring those with criminal records …
