A Design Thinking Framework For Human-Centric Explainable Artificial Intelligence In Time-Critical Systems, Paul Benjamin Stone
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has seen a surge in popularity as increased computing power has made it more viable and useful. The increasing complexity of AI, however, leads to can lead to difficulty in understanding or interpreting the results of AI procedures, which can then lead to incorrect predictions, classifications, or analysis of outcomes. The result of these problems can be over-reliance on AI, under-reliance on AI, or simply confusion as to what the results mean. Additionally, the complexity of AI models can obscure the algorithmic, data and design biases to which all models are subject, which may exacerbate negative outcomes, …

The Analysis Of Commercially Available Kratom Products In Richmond, Virginia, James H. Fleming Jr
Master of Science in Forensic Science Directed Research Projects
Kratom is a novel psychoactive substance that has gained popularity within the past ten years. Originating from Southeast Asia, the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree contain two principal alkaloids, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, that play a key role in opioid-like effects. Twenty-nine kratom products were obtained from tobacco shops in the Richmond, Virginia area, including powders, teas, capsules, extracts, and a carbonated beverage. Samples were analyzed using Direct Analysis in Real Time-Mass Spectrometry (DART-MS) for kratom alkaloids, labeled ingredients, and other possible organic compounds. Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) was used to quantitate aluminum, arsenic, copper, iron, magnesium, nickel, …

Don't Make A Run For It: Illinois V. Wardlow In Light Of Police Shootings And The Nature Of Reasonable Suspicion, Edith Perez
University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy
Fear and distrust of law enforcement have been longstanding in the Black community. Those in power have fueled this fear and distrust through brutal beatings, harassment, and general discrimination. The reasonable suspicion standard is problematic because it allows for unchecked biases to guide interactions between police officers and minorities, creating incentives to persecute. But today, a new tool exacerbates this problem and makes escaping the violence nearly impossible, deepening the contempt, and spreading its adverse effects: the media. Using a hierarchy of “if it bleeds it leads,” the capitalistic fear-based media targets the anxieties and biases of Americans, creating a …
Remedying Online Shaming, Miriam Marcowitz-Bitton, Hillel Sommer
Remedying Online Shaming, Miriam Marcowitz-Bitton, Hillel Sommer
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review
Shaming is an act of subjecting someone publicly to shame, disgrace, humiliation, or disrepute.1 This act has challenged many existing legal regimes. Its effects are devastating, and efforts to cope with it within the current legal framework have been largely unsuccessful, mainly due to the challenges posed by anonymous, online shaming. This article rethinks the remedies currently available to handle shaming. It touches upon both civil and criminal remedies and penalties, considering the role that the right to be forgotten can play in handling shaming effectively. The article argues that only by complementing existing remedies with victims' rights can we …

Our Sheep To Slaughter, Courtney Collado
Our Sheep To Slaughter, Courtney Collado
Dance (MFA) Theses
This thesis paper and accompanying film explore the reality of mothering a school-aged child in America. The written document describes the creative manifestation and explains the stalemate at which American parents and gun sense advocates find themselves: over the past four decades of documented school rampage shootings in America, precious few laws have been enacted to protect American schoolchildren from gun violence. By June of 2021, a year in which many children were taught virtually, nine children have been murdered by gunfire on school grounds. Rampage shootings are a distinctly American issue, with little to no action being taken on …

Would A Regional Fire Emergency Communications Center In Placer County Improve Efficiency For Participating Fire Agencies?, Reginald Williams
Master's Projects
Dispatch centers serve multiple functions within a community, dependent on the resources it controls. Centers operating in PC function as the primary 911 answering point, using “call-takers” and “dispatchers” to triage emergencies and respond the appropriate resources. Call-takers are trained personnel who are hired to answer 911 calls from the community, and input valuable information into a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system, that geolocates the emergency location and provides historical information of emergencies at a given location. Many call-takers are trained to provide instructions to the caller to ensure that they are 1) out of harm's way and 2) to assist …

Counterfeit pharmaceuticals are a serious threat to public safety worldwide. Adverse health effects including resistance to treatment and death have resulted from the consumption of such medicines. Aspirin, which is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, has been counterfeited in the past due to its increasing demand. Rapid and easy analytical methods are needed to detect these counterfeit medicines and put a halt to the growing number of such incidents. In this study, quantitative estimation of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) content in different over-the-counter available aspirin tablets was done using titrimetry and UV- Visible spectrophotometry. Qualitative analysis was done using Raman spectroscopy. …

Development Of A Novel Vertebrate Pesticide For The Invasive Small Indian Mongoose, Carmen Antaky, Steven C. Hess, Israel Leinbach, Robert T. T. Sugihara, Emily W. Ruell, Shane Siers
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Small Indian mongooses are detrimental introduced predators in the United States, where they depredate native species, serve as vector of disease, and threaten public safety. Due to the risk of accidental introduction to mongoose-free islands, high cost and limitations to trapping, and no national (Section 3) Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered toxicants for mongoose control, there is a need for an efficacious toxic bait for mongooses for use in conservation areas and at points of entry in the United States. Over the last five years, the National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC) worked to develop a toxic bait for mongooses for registration …

Ending The Discriminatory Pretrial Incarceration Of People With Disabilities: Liability Under The Americans With Disabilities Act And The Rehabilitation Act, Margo Schlanger, Elizabeth Jordan, Roxana Moussavian

Our federal, state, and local governments lock up hundreds of thousands of people at a time—millions over the course of a year—to ensure their appearance at a pending criminal or immigration proceeding. This type of pretrial incarceration—a term we use to cover both pretrial criminal detention and immigration detention prior to finalization of a removal order—can be very harmful. It disrupts the work and family lives of those detained, harms their health, interferes with their defense, and imposes pressure on them to forego their trial rights and accede to the government’s charges in an effort to abbreviate time behind bars. …
Not A Suicide Pact: Urgent Strategic Recommendations For Reducing Domestic Terrorism In The United States, Barbara L. Mcquade
Not A Suicide Pact: Urgent Strategic Recommendations For Reducing Domestic Terrorism In The United States, Barbara L. Mcquade
Articles
America’s Bill of Rights protects U.S. citizens’ rights to free speech, to bear arms, and to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures, among other things. But, as the Supreme Court has consistently held, no right is absolute. All rights must be balanced against other societal needs, including and especially public safety. As the threat of domestic terrorism metastasizes in the United States, Americans need to use the practical wisdom that Justice Robert L. Jackson advised in 1949 to ensure the survival of the republic.
In recognition of this growing threat, the Biden administration issued the nation’s first National Strategy …

Do Local Governments Really Have Too Much Power? Understanding The National League Of Cities' Principles Of Home Rule For The 21st Century, Nestor M. Davidson, Richard Schragger
Faculty Scholarship
This Article explains and defends the National League of Cities’ Principles of Home Rule for the 21st Century, which the authors participated in drafting. The Principles project both articulates a vision of state-local relations appropriate to an urban age and, as with previous efforts stretching back to the Progressive Era, includes a model constitutional home rule article designed to serve as the foundation for state-level constitutional law reform. This Article explains the origins of the Principles, outlines the major components of its model constitutional provision, and defends the model against a set of criticisms common to this and past home-rule …
Paper Gangsters: White Collar And Corporate Crime On Film, Jacob Kavoukis
Paper Gangsters: White Collar And Corporate Crime On Film, Jacob Kavoukis
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Many of us have never been victims of a serious crime and as a result, rely on the media in its various forms to provide us with information that we can rely on as being accurate in order to learn about it. Information on white-collar crime in the media differs from more common street crime in that it receives very little attention. The lack of attention could be because these crimes are considered non-violent and victimless, are committed by those of high social stature and power and are often complex and challenging to understand. Films can play an important role …
Parental Incarceration And Stigma: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Children's Books, Samantha Nguyen
Parental Incarceration And Stigma: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Children's Books, Samantha Nguyen
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Children of parental incarceration are often forgotten victims and have been noted to experience collateral consequences such as stigma, poor mental health, and isolation. Since children are often forgotten, there is a lack of information regarding their experiences, what resources are available to them, and whether or not these resources intended to be beneficial. One of the resources that are available to children, caregivers, and other adults are children’s books regarding parental incarceration. To determine whether or not these children's books act as a guide, this study examined the content and illustrations of 19 children’s books on parental incarceration. The …

Graph Neural Networks For Malware Classification, Vrinda Malhotra
Graph Neural Networks For Malware Classification, Vrinda Malhotra
Master's Projects
Malware is a growing threat to the digital world. The first step to managing this threat is malware detection and classification. While traditional techniques rely on static or dynamic analysis of malware, the generation of these features requires expert knowledge. Function call graphs (FCGs) consist of program functions as their nodes and their interprocedural calls as their edges, providing a wealth of knowledge that can be utilized to classify malware without feature extraction that requires experts. This project treats malware classification as a graph classification problem, setting node features using the Local Degree Profile (LDP) model and using different graph …
Vulnerable Populations And Flooding: A Bay Area County Public Alert And Warning Case Study, Victoria Castro
Vulnerable Populations And Flooding: A Bay Area County Public Alert And Warning Case Study, Victoria Castro
Master's Projects
Public alert and warning systems are crucial tools that save lives and protect property in times of emergencies. In the past several decades, natural disasters have struck the nation, and effective public alerts and warnings were not disseminated to all impacted populations, calling into question the effectiveness of emergency communication systems (Wimberley, 2012).
As an example, in 2012, when Hurricane Sandy hit the east coast, public alert and warning systems reached those who had access to technological devices. However, emergency managers and alerting authorities faced the challenge of alerting all groups, including the homeless and individuals with access and functional …

An Evaluation Of The County Of Santa Clara’S Reentry Alcohol And Drug Studies Peer Mentor Program, Sarah Oliveira
Master's Projects
In the United States, incarceration rates have increased dramatically over the last three decades, soaring above any other country. Significant factors contributing to the increase include changes in sentencing laws and policies that target drug-related offenders and prioritize punishment over rehabilitation. Strict sentencing laws have led to mass incarceration, which has caused severe prison overcrowding and led to the infringement of fundamental human rights in prisons (Gottesdiener, 2011).
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, approximately 600,000 individuals are released from federal and state prisons each year (Carson, 2018). In California, an estimated one in three adults has an arrest …
Fourth Amendment Issues And Covid-19 Tracking, Brooke A. Banks
Fourth Amendment Issues And Covid-19 Tracking, Brooke A. Banks
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
The note argues that the special needs doctrine does not justify warrantless government access to cell site location information (CSLI) for COVID-19 tracking, as individual privacy interests outweigh public health benefits. It advocates for voluntary, privacy-protective measures, such as opt-in apps, to balance privacy and pandemic response.
