Religion, Crime, And The Mediating Effects Of Social Control And Self-Control, Parker Bowman May 2026

Religion, Crime, And The Mediating Effects Of Social Control And Self-Control, Parker Bowman

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Past research on the relationship between religion and crime has found the two variables have a significant negative correlation. Currently, there are two main mechanisms used to explain this relationship: social control and self-control. Social control theorists argue that participation in religious organizations decreases criminal behaviors by increasing social bonds. Self-control theorists argue that religious norms and values decrease criminal behavior by increasing an individual's self-control. While both mechanisms have been well supported by research, there remains the question of which is the stronger mediator of the religion-crime relationship. This study seeks to answer this question by comparing the effects …

Training With Orthographic Stress And Rhythm Markers Improves Adult Readers’ Prosodic Sensitivity, Jennifer Gross, Michelle Roldan, Tanner Kiessel, Madison Esselink, Lucretia Dunlap May 2026

Training With Orthographic Stress And Rhythm Markers Improves Adult Readers’ Prosodic Sensitivity, Jennifer Gross, Michelle Roldan, Tanner Kiessel, Madison Esselink, Lucretia Dunlap

Peer Reviewed Articles

Across alphabetic writing systems, orthographies provide only partial cues to prosody, making prosodic sensitivity an important component of skilled reading. In English, readers must infer lexical stress and rhythm from opaque spelling patterns while silently constructing an inner voice. Two independent replications of the same randomized active control experiment (N=528 undergraduates) evaluated an orthographic prosody training in which passages were annotated with stress and rhythm markers and practiced with feedback, after which cues were reduced to a single marker to evaluate transfer. Prosodic sensitivity was measured using a forced-choice meter judgment task in which readers selected the metrically …

The Effect Of A Structured Weekly Practice Routine On A Middle School Choir Student's Practice Behavior And Rehearsal Engagement, Sam Kim May 2026

The Effect Of A Structured Weekly Practice Routine On A Middle School Choir Student's Practice Behavior And Rehearsal Engagement, Sam Kim

Master of Education Program Theses

This study examined how a structured weekly practice routine influenced a middle school choir student’s practice behavior and rehearsal engagement over a six-week period. Data were collected through practice logs, weekly reflections, and rehearsal observations. Findings indicated increased consistency, greater time investment, and more intentional, strategic practice. As a result of these changes in practice behavior, the student demonstrated greater attentiveness, responsiveness, and overall engagement during rehearsal. These findings support existing research on self-regulated learning (SRL) and deliberate practice, suggesting that structured practice routines can serve as effective scaffolds for improving student engagement in ensemble settings.

Creating Space For Pleasure: The Effects Of Alternative Reading Environments On Secondary Students' Reading Attitudes, Kari Rushmer May 2026

Creating Space For Pleasure: The Effects Of Alternative Reading Environments On Secondary Students' Reading Attitudes, Kari Rushmer

Master of Education Program Theses

This study examined how dedicated, free-choice reading time influenced student perceptions of and enjoyment of reading in a 10th-grade classroom. The purpose of the study was to determine whether providing weekly free-choice reading time within a comfortable, book-rich, library/café-style environment influenced reading enjoyment among 10th-grade students. Results indicated modest positive shifts in students’ comfort in the reading environment and their desire for in-class reading time, with qualitative data suggesting an increase in students’ enjoyment of reading. These findings suggest that environmental factors and dedicated reading time may support increased student engagement, even over a short intervention period.

Silence Or Self-Disclosure? Examining The Psychological And Relational Factors Shaping Political Communication Between Gen Z And Their Families, Bradford E. Netherton May 2026

Silence Or Self-Disclosure? Examining The Psychological And Relational Factors Shaping Political Communication Between Gen Z And Their Families, Bradford E. Netherton

Communication (PhD) Dissertations

This dissertation examines the psychological and relational factors shaping political communication between Generation Z and their families. Using Communication Privacy Management (CPM) and Family Communication Patterns (FCP) theories as a dual framework, the study investigates how emotions, relational turbulence, and family orientations influence political self-disclosure during face-to-face gatherings. Data were collected via an online survey of 488 Gen Z participants (ages 18–28) following the 2025 Thanksgiving holiday. The results reveal a critical distinction between negative and positive privacy boundary strength. Negative boundary strength, characterized by defensive and restrictive regulation, was consistently associated with heightened experiences of fear, anger, frustration, and …

Cognitive Crossroads : A Dual Task Validation Study, Saiyid "Ali" Shariq May 2026

Cognitive Crossroads : A Dual Task Validation Study, Saiyid "Ali" Shariq

Theses & ETDs

The modern environment places constant demands on human attention, yet cognitive capacity remains fundamentally limited. This study investigated whether combining a visual memory task with a concurrent auditory vigilance task in the Psychology Experiment Building Language (PEBL) platform would function as a valid dual-task paradigm capable of producing measurable divided-attention costs. Thirty college students (ages 18–22, M = 20.47) completed three counterbalanced conditions: a memory automaticity task, an auditory vigilance task requiring spacebar responses to irregularly timed tones, and a dual-task condition combining both. Reaction time and accuracy served as dependent measures, analyzed using four paired-samples t-tests. Results revealed significant …

Exploring Athlete Satisfaction Through The Lens Of Selfdetermination Theory: Motivation Profiles In Collegiate Athletes Outside Division I, Madison Garcia May 2026

Exploring Athlete Satisfaction Through The Lens Of Selfdetermination Theory: Motivation Profiles In Collegiate Athletes Outside Division I, Madison Garcia

Theses & ETDs

The expectations to perform both academically and athletically can be overwhelming for collegiate student-athletes. As proposed by Self-Determination Theory (SDT), the fulfillment of the basic psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness fosters intrinsic motivation, which is positively associated with performance and overall satisfaction. The present study surveyed 202 lower-level collegiate student-athletes to examine the relationship between SDT motivation profiles and organizational satisfaction. Results indicated no statistically significant relationship between the variables, although a trend toward significance was observed. These findings suggest that the relationship between motivation and satisfaction is more complex than initially hypothesized. Future research should continue to …

An Examination Of Rejection Sensitivity In Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder; An Erp Cyberball Study Of Social Exclusion, Jordan Cohen May 2026

An Examination Of Rejection Sensitivity In Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder; An Erp Cyberball Study Of Social Exclusion, Jordan Cohen

Theses & ETDs

Attention Defi cit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is commonly associated with emotional dysregulation, including rejection sensitivity (RS). Despite qualitative evidence supporting this comorbidity, few studies have examined the neurophysiological relationship between ADHD and RS. The current study used event-related potential (ERP) techniques to examine electrophysiological responses to social rejection in individuals with ADHD using an adapted version of a Cyberball social exclusion task. Fourteen participants (ADHD: N=8, Control: N=6) completed the task while EEG was recorded from 32 active electrodes. Grand averages were calculated at frontal midline electrode sites Fz and Cz, to identify a feedback related negativity (FRN) for four conditions: …

Examining Executive Functions In Adhd Students During Explicit Sequence Learning: An Erp Study, Kayla Eve Henson May 2026

Examining Executive Functions In Adhd Students During Explicit Sequence Learning: An Erp Study, Kayla Eve Henson

Theses & ETDs

Executive functions (EFs) have been found to be impaired in individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD is characterized by inattention, inhibitory difficulties, and hyperactivity which impair social, professional, and academic functioning. EFs are commonly understood as the skill set necessary for carrying out goal-directed behavior, this includes inhibition, working memory, attention, and performance monitoring. Performance monitoring consists of immediate error detection, denoted by the ERN, and conscious error detection in which the error is fully recognized and processed as an error to then improve behavior, denoted by the Pe. This improvement in behavior can manifest as post-error slowing. …

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

Abstract of Project

Future Ready Young Adults: Building Creative and Adaptive Thinkers addresses a developmental gap in educational practices that prioritize technical proficiency over the psychological frameworks necessary for navigating systemic ambiguity. This project introduces an interdisciplinary, modular curriculum specifically designed for the challenges of emerging adulthood. By synthesizing Creative Problem Solving (CPS), James Clear’s habit architecture, and Martin Seligman’s PERMA model, the curriculum provides a structured pathway for cultivating creative self-efficacy and financial capability. Moving beyond traditional views of innate creativity, this model employs asset-based frameworks to treat cognitive agility and ambiguity tolerance as developable competencies. The project culminates …

Imaginatude!Tm Designing Informal Activity Sessions To Cultivate Creative Confidence And Well-Being In Young Adolescents, Cheryl Harris May 2026

Imaginatude!Tm Designing Informal Activity Sessions To Cultivate Creative Confidence And Well-Being In Young Adolescents, Cheryl Harris

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

Telling a young adolescent to "be creative" doesn't always land the way adults hope. At a younger age, being told to be creative was easier because creativity was often effortless — erasers became dolls in a tissue box panorama, a pet was recruited as a co-investigator in a backyard mystery hunt, and wacky on-the-spot rules transformed a boring board game into an epic quest. But as young teens become aware that creativity is a highly valued skill for 21st century work and life, that awareness can feel like pressure — arriving precisely at a time when many adolescents are transitioning …

Fantasies Of Just Torture: On Violent Efforts To Navigate The Intolerable, Tonya Sims May 2026

Fantasies Of Just Torture: On Violent Efforts To Navigate The Intolerable, Tonya Sims

Philosophy Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines why torture, despite being among the clearest objects of moral revulsion available to us, remains imaginable as a serious moral possibility. I begin by refining the concept of torture through an examination of the United Nations Convention Against Torture, while arguing that insufficient attention has been paid to what I take to be its paradigmatic form, namely sadistic torture. Against definitions that treat torture primarily in instrumental terms, I argue that torture is best understood as the intentional infliction of extreme pain upon an unwilling person in order to dominate or otherwise manipulate their autonomy. Drawing on …

The Goad, The Bad, & The Ugly: The Livestreamed Vice Signaling & Body Fascism Of Clavicular & Asmongold, Jacob T. Fry May 2026

The Goad, The Bad, & The Ugly: The Livestreamed Vice Signaling & Body Fascism Of Clavicular & Asmongold, Jacob T. Fry

Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis explores the rhetorical, material, and symbolic implications of fascist livestreaming in the United States through two popular streamers: Clavicular and Asmongold. These two streamers represent a small slice of the rise of different reactionary rhetorics online and how the use of different masculine subcultures—in this case ‘Looksmaxxing’ or Gamer inspired rhetoric—are used as ideological texts for white male supremacy. Whether in front of the glow of their gaming monitor or the flashing lights of a nightclub, the livestreaming of the body, home, relationships, and lifestyles challenge rhetorical conceptions of style, the ‘public/private sphere,’ and political communication. As different …

The Effect Of Including A Yeast Culture Containing Essential Oils In Receiving Cattle Diets On Growth Performance And Health, Taylor Deanna Foster May 2026

The Effect Of Including A Yeast Culture Containing Essential Oils In Receiving Cattle Diets On Growth Performance And Health, Taylor Deanna Foster

Animal Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Due to the increased risk of bacterial populations developing resistance to current antibiotics, consumer perceptions surrounding the utilization of antibiotics use in cattle, and the endemic incidence of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) among growing and finishing cattle, alternative management strategies to improve the health of cattle must be developed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of a supplement containing a yeast culture and an essential oils blend (YEO) on the health and growth performance of stocker calves at high-risk for BRD. Crossbred male beef calves (n = 185) received on two separate dates were used in …

Understanding And Managing Stress In The Public Sector: A Focus On Municipal Government, Emmanuel N. Asante

Master of Public Administration for Senior Leadership

This Capstone examines workplace stress among municipal government employees, using the City of Worcester, Massachusetts, as a practical case study. Municipal employees play a critical role in delivering essential public services, yet they often work under challenging conditions, including heavy workloads, limited resources, strict rules, and high public expectations. Over time, these pressures can negatively affect employee well-being, job performance, and the quality of services provided to residents.

The purpose of this project is to understand better the causes and effects of workplace stress in local government and to identify practical ways municipalities can address it. The study uses an …

Bounded Transformation: From Static Readiness To Trajectory Based Change Viability, Mary Piecewicz, Manjari Gupta May 2026

Bounded Transformation: From Static Readiness To Trajectory Based Change Viability, Mary Piecewicz, Manjari Gupta

Master of Public Administration for Senior Leadership

Most organizational transformations do not fail loudly. They fade, fragment, and quietly exhaust the people expected to sustain them. What practitioners often diagnose as resistance, poor adoption, or weak execution may begin earlier, with an untested assumption that the organization is stable, coherent, and capable enough to absorb planned change. Existing change frameworks offer useful guidance for implementation, but they do not formally ask whether the organization is currently moving in a direction, and with enough stability, to make planned change viable.

This capstone introduces Bounded Transformation: From Static Readiness to Trajectory-Based Change Viability, a trajectory-based pre-condition framework for …

The Future Of Sustainable Fashion: How Vr Can Transform Retail Into An Eco-Friendly Shopping Experience, Kaeleigh G. Stroud

Apparel Merchandising and Product Development Undergraduate Honors Theses

Exploring the influence of virtual reality (VR) on consumer behavior highlights its potential as a powerful tool for facilitating sustainable fashion practices. The primary focus of this research is to examine how VR technology affects consumers’ hedonic (enjoyment-driven), utilitarian (function-driven), social (connection-driven), and symbolic (meaning-driven) values, and how these values impact consumer satisfaction. While VR can be used as a tool to enhance consumer engagement, its potential to create a more sustainable shopping experience in fashion makes it essential for facilitating eco-friendly fashion consumption.

To understand how VR impacts consumers’ shopping behaviors, this study explores how sustainable shopping shapes consumer …

The Portrayal Of Caseworker Turnover In New York State Foster Care Assessment Documents, Shelby S. Cover-Lapomarede May 2026

The Portrayal Of Caseworker Turnover In New York State Foster Care Assessment Documents, Shelby S. Cover-Lapomarede

Student Theses and Dissertations

This paper examines how caseworker turnover is portrayed in New York State foster care assessment documents published between 2014 and 2024. Utilizing a qualitative content analysis (QCA) approach informed by Margrit Schreier’s methodology, this study evaluates publicly available government reports, assessment documents, policy documents, and audit reports to identify how turnover is represented, what causes are highlighted, and what consequences are downplayed. The data reveals that turnover is often framed as an administrative issue rather than a workplace welfare crisis with extensive emotional and relational impacts on caseworkers, children, and families. Burnout, heavy caseloads, inadequate mental health care, low pay, …

Effects Of Social Sport Settings And Belonging On Female Athlete Mental Health Stress, Abby Caudill

Undergraduate Theses

Mental health concerns among collegiate athletes have become an increasingly important issue, particularly for female athletes who face unique social and performance-related pressures. Understanding the factors that contribute to or protect against mental health stress is critical for improving athlete well-being. The purpose of this study was to examine whether sport type, team belonging, self-stigma, and athletic identity were associated with mental health stress among female collegiate athletes. Participants included 57 undergraduate female athletes from a small private university who completed self-report survey measuring team belonging, self-stigma, athletic identity, and mental health stress. Bivariate correlation results indicated that higher self-stigma …

Geographic Bias In Ai: How Llm Outputs Vary By Location, Alekya Bongu May 2026

Geographic Bias In Ai: How Llm Outputs Vary By Location, Alekya Bongu

RhetTech

This paper explores the inherent biases present in Large Language Model (LLM) outputs. As AI use becomes more widespread, it is extremely important to examine the implicit biases in these models, as AI will only perpetuate inaccuracies. By understanding the implications of using AI, we can use it in a way that causes the least harm. Using Hofstede’s cultural onion to structure research questions, I tested four LLMs—ChatGPT, Pi.ai, Qwen, and DeepSeek—across three different geographic locations: the United States, India, and Ireland. The findings demonstrate that while LLMs can adjust some content based on a user’s location, they frequently default …

Eugenics Rhetoric In C.S. Lewis’S That Hideous Strength And Essays, Michelle Griffin May 2026

Eugenics Rhetoric In C.S. Lewis’S That Hideous Strength And Essays, Michelle Griffin

RhetTech

In the book That Hideous Strength, C.S. Lewis depicts the National Institute of Co-ordinated Experiments (N.I.C.E.) as an exclusive organization dominated by scientists, academics, and state authorities, mirroring the professional middle class that shaped British eugenics in the 20th century. Throughout the book there is evidence of eugenics discourse relating to human experimentation, feeblemindedness, sterilization of the “unfit,” as well as the role of power dynamics, all of which points to That Hideous Strength being an intentional representation of the eugenics discourse happening in Britian around the same time in which Lewis wrote the book. There is substantial evidence …

Rosemary’S Baby Is Immaculate, Alana L. Lee May 2026

Rosemary’S Baby Is Immaculate, Alana L. Lee

RhetTech

This essay examines the legacy of Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby (1968) and its influence on modern horror media, specifically Michael Mohan’s Immaculate (2024). Cinematography, plot devices, and thematic parallels in both films depict the ritualization of women’s bodily autonomy within religious and patriarchal power structures. While Immaculate effectively draws on its predecessor's inspiration, its reliance on poor-quality horror tropes negates its critical perception and originality. This essay examines the films’ various portrayals of reproductive abuse, such as marital rape in Rosemary’s Baby, and forced in vitro fertilization (IVF) in Immaculate. These abuses are explored as different methods …
