Metabolic Dysfunction And Metabolic Management In Episodic Migraine, Delora E. Denney, Michael J. Marmura May 2026

Metabolic Dysfunction And Metabolic Management In Episodic Migraine, Delora E. Denney, Michael J. Marmura

Department of Jefferson Headache Center Papers and Presentations

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Evidence suggests a significant link between migraine and metabolic syndrome,, especially in those with chronic or refractory migraine. Weight loss and exercise may effectively prevent migraine. Here, we review the evidence behind exercise and weight loss as migraine treatments.

RECENT FINDINGS: While metabolic syndrome and pain have long had a known association, only recently have strong studies demonstrated a higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome in people with migraine. Additionally, other sequelae of metabolic syndrome, obesity, hypertension, hypercoagulability, and diabetes also interplay with migraine. New medications like GLP-1 agonists may be a potential treatment for migraine as …

Losses And Labor: Experimental Insights Into Worker Effort Supply And Behavioral Biases, Maia Lemov May 2026

Losses And Labor: Experimental Insights Into Worker Effort Supply And Behavioral Biases, Maia Lemov

Economics Honors Projects

Worker effort supply is influenced not only by rational expectations but also biases such as framing and numerical presentation of incentives. Identifying these effects is essential for designing effective incentives. To study left-digit manipulation, loss aversion, and loss aversion prediction, I conducted an experiment in an online labor market. Participants completed a real-effort typing task, a willingness- to-pay (WTP) task, and a self-reported loss aversion survey. Loss framing and left-digit manipulation had no statistically significant effects on effort, with no interaction effect, suggesting their influence on effort-supply may be overstated or highly heterogeneous. Despite null treatment effects, behaviorally elicited loss …

Measuring Disability Prevalence In Healthcare: A Study Comparing Two Disability Measures, Kristen L. Milefchik, Rhonda K. Dailey, Sharon Milberger

Developmental Disabilities Network Journal

People with disabilities experience significant health disparities and interventions are needed to address them. Measuring disability prevalence is an essential aspect of designing effective, data-driven healthcare strategies. Accurately measuring disability prevalence is challenging given disability is a complex phenomenon, with biological, social, environmental, and cultural components. Previous studies have compared a variety of disability status measurements and found that measurements were incongruent with each other. This study examines the concordance between disability status using two different measures: the nationally recognized American Community Survey (ACS-6) functional difficulty questions and one disability identity question. We used data from 3,621 adult patients participating …

Testing The Motivational Effects Of Exciting Lh To Pptg And Ldtg Projections In Rats, Emma Bickford May 2026

Testing The Motivational Effects Of Exciting Lh To Pptg And Ldtg Projections In Rats, Emma Bickford

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Drugs of abuse and rewarding stimuli increase dopamine (DA) activity in the mesolimbic system, particularly within the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and nucleus accumbens (NAcc). Mesopontine regions, including the laterodorsal tegmental nucleus (LDTg) and pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus (PPTg), regulate VTA DA activity and contribute to drug sensitization, though their afferent inputs remain poorly defined. The lateral hypothalamus (LH), a key motivational region, projects to both the LDTg and PPTg, suggesting a pathway for modulating mesolimbic DA signaling. Using optogenetics, this study will selectively stimulate LH–PPTg projections in rats to examine their role in motivation, feeding, reward processing, and addiction.

Investigating The Impact Of Individual Differences In Inattentiveness On Learning From Gesture, Alexander Hurka May 2026

Investigating The Impact Of Individual Differences In Inattentiveness On Learning From Gesture, Alexander Hurka

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is associated with inattentiveness and lower working memory capacity, which can impair academic performance. Gestures, movements of the hands that express information alongside speech, help maintain attention and support learning. We investigated whether adults learn Japanese vocabulary more effectively through speech alone or speech+gesture instruction. Baseline and visual attentiveness were measured to explore interactions between attention and gesture-based learning. Spontaneous gesture rates were also measured to consider the implications of gesture production in learning. This study helps understand and develop gesture-related tools that can be particularly beneficial to students struggling with attention.

Ses And Cognitive Interdependence In Romantic Relationships, Emily Young, Alexis Coniku, Ledina Imami May 2026

Ses And Cognitive Interdependence In Romantic Relationships, Emily Young, Alexis Coniku, Ledina Imami

Research Symposium

Lower socioeconomic status (SES) couples face many relationship challenges, from conflict to high rates of divorce. Recent work shows that, in response to these challenges, lower-SES people engage in self-protection, which may lower relationship satisfaction. These findings suggest that SES may influence the extent to which couple members perceive each other as one unit, which may contribute to important relationship outcomes. Here we test this idea by exploring if SES predicts people’s cognitive representations of their partner. Two studies (total N = 468) tested if: 1) SES was associated with cognitive interdependence (CI), as seen in spontaneous plural pronoun use …

Lighting The Blame: Socioeconomic Status And Lung Cancer Stigma, Maille Kimble May 2026

Lighting The Blame: Socioeconomic Status And Lung Cancer Stigma, Maille Kimble

Research Symposium

Lung cancer is a highly stigmatized illness, and patients often face societal stigma that increases the psychological burden of coping with the disease while limiting access to high-quality social support and allyship within the medical system (Sudts et al., 2024). Stigma associated with smoking, in particular, may serve as a significant barrier to care and compromise health outcomes. This study investigates whether socioeconomic status (SES) contributes to the perpetuation of stigmatized beliefs about individuals with lung cancer. Individuals from lower SES backgrounds are frequently targets of prejudice and are more likely to be perceived as responsible for the adversities they …

Probing Vs Declarative Ads, Emily Young May 2026

Probing Vs Declarative Ads, Emily Young

Research Symposium

Finding common ground on controversial issues is essential for a functioning democracy. Can the way political messaging is packaged affect whether attitudes shift? Probing messages ask viewers how they feel on an issue, while declarative messages tell viewers how they should feel. I hypothesized that a probing message would be more effective in changing attitudes. Across two studies (N = 889, N = 158), I measured participants’ opinion on two issues (immigration and abortion). Two weeks later, participants saw an infographic supporting the opposing position with either a probing question or a declarative statement at the top. Their new opinions …

The Bonds Of Family: A Case Study On Interconnectedness In The Prison-Industrial Complex, Cameron Stone May 2026

The Bonds Of Family: A Case Study On Interconnectedness In The Prison-Industrial Complex, Cameron Stone

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

Beginning in the 1960s, a rightward shift in politics and “War on Drugs” policies propelled the United States toward mass incarceration. The result was a prison population of around 2 million people, in which minority groups have been disproportionately imprisoned. While historians and legal scholars have examined the policies and legal structures behind mass incarceration, oral historians working in the tradition of social history emphasize the importance of narratives of those most impacted yet traditionally neglected. This paper specifically examines the relatively unstudied Columbia University's 2019 Mass Incarceration oral history collection, which explores the interconnected perspectives of one family’s experience …

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

In recent years, the importance of utilizing inclusive practices in the workplace has become much more widely-known, especially in regards to supporting neurodivergent employees. The systemic barriers and challenges faced by neurodivergent job-seekers and employees mean this population is often limited in their employment prospects, in turn depriving human resources professionals and their organizations of the chance to hire and benefit from diverse talent. As neurodivergent individuals exist within the workforce and general public, it is critical that organizations properly accommodate their needs in order to ensure optimal inclusivity, business efficiency, and productivity. This scoping review of the literature on …

What Does It Mean To Live A Creative Life?, Shelby A. Simmeth

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

What is a creative person? Is creativity something one is born with, or can it be cultivated through education and practice? In today’s world, there is a gap between what people assume creativity is and what it really is. My early exposure to creativity has been a transformational learning experience for me and has changed my approach to everything in my life. I have always been curious about how creativity could increase mental health and wellbeing. The purpose of this project is to help people understand the unique traits of people who embrace their own creativity and how their stories …
