Where's The Love: Portrayals Of African American Romantic Relationships In Media, Christopher Johnson May 2026

Where's The Love: Portrayals Of African American Romantic Relationships In Media, Christopher Johnson

Caravel Undergraduate Research Journal

In today’s world, the media is a pervasive and influential force that has a great impact on an individual’s thoughts, beliefs, and actions. Given this power, it can ingrain images in a person’s mind, that when not properly monitored, can cultivate “realities” that are nonexistent or slightly distorted. This study looks to understand heterosexual romantic relationship behavior in the African American sitcom “The Game” and the potential effects it could have on viewers. Employing a content analysis, interpersonal expressions were measured between characters in this television show that reinforce positive or negative relationship behavior. It was found that there were …

What In The Fukushima Should We Do? Analyzing The Costs Of The Fukushima Daiichi Disaster And Japan’S Reactions, Sara Deal, Mary Blair Dellinger

Caravel Undergraduate Research Journal

The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, which resulted from the Tōhoku earthquake and subsequent tsunami on 11 March 2011, has caused much debate about the future of the nuclear power industry.  Japan has shut down all of its 54 nuclear reactors and increased power production through fossil fuel plants to make up the difference (Foster 2012).  This paper analyzes Japan’s decision to shut down its nuclear reactors and investigates the environmental, economic, and health costs of this decision. Nuclear power is compared with other forms of power in regards to life cycle cost, land use, CO2 emissions, and deaths on …

Maternal Depressive Symptoms Predicting Development Of Internalizing Behavior Problems In Boys With Fragile X Syndrome, Sara Deal, Mary Blair Dellinger May 2026

Maternal Depressive Symptoms Predicting Development Of Internalizing Behavior Problems In Boys With Fragile X Syndrome, Sara Deal, Mary Blair Dellinger

Caravel Undergraduate Research Journal

Individuals with fragile X syndrome (FXS) often exhibit increased internalizing problem behaviors that substantially impact functioning. Research suggests that maternal depressive symptoms can increase the development of internalizing problem behaviors in their children. The present study examined whether (1) maternal depressive symptoms related to the degree of internalizing behaviors exhibited in their sons with FXS, and (2) age as an influencing factor for the development of internalizing behaviors. Child internalizing behaviors were measured in 49 male children with FXS (range 1.08-5.75 yrs). Maternal depressive symptoms were measured in each of their mothers with the FMR1 premutation (range 20.55-40.74 yrs). Increased …

Propp, Ong, And Jung: The Order Of The Folktale Functions In Star Wars Rebels, Nathaniel Sorrentino May 2026

Propp, Ong, And Jung: The Order Of The Folktale Functions In Star Wars Rebels, Nathaniel Sorrentino

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

While the original Star Wars films have long been seen as a modern fairy tale (Gordon, 1978, p. 314), I argue that the animated television show Star Wars Rebels could also be considered a modern fairy tale due to its narrative structure. To evaluate Star Wars Rebels' structural elements, I examine its plot through Vladimir Propp’s functions of a folktale, as fairy tales and folktales share many structural elements. Vladimir Propp defined folktales around a series of 31 functions, with an emphasis on the importance of their order. Although there are certain areas where Rebels appears to diverge, careful examination …

Dexmedetomidine And The Prevention Of Emergence Agitation In Military Veterans With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Taylor P. Ranegar May 2026

Dexmedetomidine And The Prevention Of Emergence Agitation In Military Veterans With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Taylor P. Ranegar

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Emergence agitation (EA) is a post-anesthetic complication that occurs when the patient is in a self-limited, nonfluctuating state of excitement while transitioning into a state of consciousness. EA can lead to negative adverse outcomes including, accidental invasive line removal, bleeding, respiratory depression, unintentional extubation, and injury to the staff and the patient. EA is often observed in military veterans who have a medical history of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). For patients with a history of military exposure undergoing elective general anesthesia who also have PTSD, anxiety, and or depression, the incidence of EA was estimated to be around 27%. The …

Incorporating Play-Based Learning While Meeting State Standards, Alicia Muer May 2026

Incorporating Play-Based Learning While Meeting State Standards, Alicia Muer

Graduate Teacher Education

This paper reviews the benefits of incorporating developmentally appropriate practices into the classroom through a play-based approach. This is a controversial topic, as most teachers are more concerned with teaching to the standards than with the needs of students as a whole. Fifteen studies, including qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods, and action research, were used to examine what developmentally appropriate practices are. Three themes emerged from the studies: play-based learning, professional development, and teacher-student collaboration. In the play-based theme, a sub-theme emerged which focused on games and gaming. The findings showed that students thrive more in an environment where play-based learning is …

How Are Us Legal Attorneys Being Prepared To Handle Ai-Enhanced Evidence During Evidence Discovery?, Enoch Martin May 2026

How Are Us Legal Attorneys Being Prepared To Handle Ai-Enhanced Evidence During Evidence Discovery?, Enoch Martin

Honors

Evidence is the means by which arguments are presented, supported, and challenged in the United States court of law. With the recent emergence of consumer AI-systems in 2023 and their unprecedented growth since, U.S. courts are facing the greatest disruption in evidentiary procedure since the introduction of photographs over a century ago. Yet despite widespread acceptance of this fact, there exists no discussions regarding how US attorneys are being prepared to uphold the right of U.S. citizens’ to proper representation in court by properly challenging and defending the admission of AI-enhanced evidence. This project examines how U.S. courts and legal …

Mouth, Sex, And Hungry Heart: Anatomy Of The Short-Form Fairy Tale Retelling, Emma M. Murray May 2026

Mouth, Sex, And Hungry Heart: Anatomy Of The Short-Form Fairy Tale Retelling, Emma M. Murray

English Honors Projects

This project traces the past fifty years of short-form fairy tale retellings authored by women, identifying formal and thematic continuities that define the mode. Building on Adrienne Rich’s concept of “revisioning,” it argues that the political work of these intertextual tales has evolved alongside feminist and queer theory, the emergence of fairy tale studies, and the cultural dominance of children’s fairy tale media. It delineates the short-form retelling as a distinct genre, highlighting its subversive feminist tendencies, and draws on affect, aesthetic, and queer theory, and genre studies to show how these texts reshape narrative expectations and cultural norms.

Teaching Exercise: A Survey On Educational Aids And Self-Efficacy, Joshua I. Eaton, Lucas Morgan, Matthew Hermes May 2026

Teaching Exercise: A Survey On Educational Aids And Self-Efficacy, Joshua I. Eaton, Lucas Morgan, Matthew Hermes

Honors College Theses

HEPs are an important part of therapeutic treatment because they allow for greater exercise stimulus than can be achieved from supervised exercise alone. 94.7% of physical therapists reported prescribing HEPs to their patients. However, patient adherence to these plans can be as low as 35%. Lack of HEP adherence likely leads to sub-optimal clinical outcomes in physical therapy patients. Self-efficacy is improved in patients by supplementing HEPs with instructional aids, especially in the form of videos instead of pictures or descriptions, because they act as a form of vicarious experience. It is possible that improving self-efficacy through vicarious experience could …

Why Read In The Age Of Post-Literacy?, Corrine H. Martello

Educational Studies Honors Papers

This research paper aims to answer the question, “Why read?” by exploring the significance and purpose of reading, during what many have begun to call the post-literacy era, in order to convey the message that we as human beings have a fundamental need for reading and a failure to fulfill this need may result in an inability to reach one’s full potential as both an individual and as a society at large.

Differences In Gendered Educational Experiences Through A Hegemonic Lens: Cultural Influences On Schooling Norms, Camille M. Hubbs

Educational Studies Honors Papers

Recent research literature has found boys to be failing in school compared to girls; because of this a wave of awareness and furthered research on boys has followed. However, girls’ struggles in education must not be ignored as a result of boys’ issues. This project aims to describe and analyze the differences in educational experiences that both sexes have, and it operates under the understanding that culture is a primary influence on these different experiences. Experiences are divided into three broad sections: academic outcomes, confidence, and behaviors. In short, boys generally have worse academic outcomes, girls have poor confidence, and …

Julie And Julia 2.0 Emergent Themes Of “One Year” Food Blogging Challenge, Anna Hollrah

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This study analyzed the thematic patterns that emerge in year-end posts by food bloggers who undertook a one-year blogging challenge. Using rhetorical criticism and an open coding process, 25 reflective blog posts were analyzed to identify recurring themes and motivations from the legacies of Julia Child and Julie Powell. The analysis identified seven primary themes, which were then grouped into two categories: advice and response. The themes included authenticity, inspiration, hard work, learning, enjoyment, gratitude, and community building.

Several of these themes reflected the influence and advice of Child and Powell, and they also highlighted the blogger’s personal growth, creativity, …

Unbottling The Truth: A Study Of Alcohol Rehabilitation Access And Outcomes In Kentucky, Kendall Pierce May 2026

Unbottling The Truth: A Study Of Alcohol Rehabilitation Access And Outcomes In Kentucky, Kendall Pierce

Honors Theses

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) remains a significant public health concern in the United States, with disproportionately higher rates in Kentucky. Despite the availability of various treatment modalities, barriers to access and perceptions of treatment effectiveness continue to influence recovery outcomes. This study examines the accessibility and perceived success of alcohol rehabilitation programs in Kentucky through qualitative focus groups with individuals with lived experience of AUD (n = 9). Using an inductive thematic analysis approach, four major themes were identified: individual readiness for recovery, social support and resource navigation, structural barriers within the treatment system, and perceived characteristics of …

Monitoring is critical for early detection and prevention of outbreaks, yet routine airborne fungal testing is not universally mandated across healthcare settings. Methods: A systematic review of peer-reviewed articles from four databases was conducted to identify current airborne fungal monitoring guidelines and best practices for sample collection, culture media, incubation conditions, and results interpretation. Results: Eighteen articles met the inclusion criteria, and four studies …

Invisible Fallout: Economic Health, Environmental Injustice, And The Social Legacy Of The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, Isabella G. Bailey-Sims May 2026

Invisible Fallout: Economic Health, Environmental Injustice, And The Social Legacy Of The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, Isabella G. Bailey-Sims

Honors Theses

This paper examines the long-term impacts of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) in western Kentucky, framing its legacy as a form of “invisible fallout” in which economic growth was accompanied by delayed environmental and public health consequences. Established in the early 1950s, the plant served as a major economic driver, providing stable employment and transforming the regional economy. However, its operation involved the handling of radioactive materials and hazardous chemicals, leading to environmental contamination and occupational exposure risks that were not fully disclosed during its active years.

Drawing on epidemiological studies, environmental reports, and socioeconomic analyses, this study identifies …

Cancer Risk Perceptions And Nicotine Use Behaviors Among Eastern Kentucky University Students, Kassidy Burke May 2026

Cancer Risk Perceptions And Nicotine Use Behaviors Among Eastern Kentucky University Students, Kassidy Burke

The use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), including vaping devices and oral nicotine pouches, has increased among adolescents and young adults. Although often marketed as safer alternatives to cigarettes, emerging evidence suggests these products may still pose significant health risks, including potential contributions to cancer. Despite this, many college students perceive them as low risk. This study examines cancer risk perceptions and nicotine use behaviors among students at Eastern Kentucky University, focusing on perceptions of cigarettes, vaping devices, and oral nicotine pouches, as well as how these perceptions influence behavior. It also explores sources of health information and the …

What’S The Difference Without Deference: How The Eleventh Circuit Stopped Deferring To The Sentencing Commission And Shaped A New Landscape Of Federal Sentencing, Katherine Howard, Conrad Kahn May 2026

What’S The Difference Without Deference: How The Eleventh Circuit Stopped Deferring To The Sentencing Commission And Shaped A New Landscape Of Federal Sentencing, Katherine Howard, Conrad Kahn

University of Miami Law Review

The Sentencing Guidelines shape nearly every federal sentence. Judges must calculate and consider the Guidelines’ recommended range before deciding how long someone goes to prison. For decades, though, courts treated the Sentencing Commission’s commentary about the Guidelines as controlling—even when the guideline’s text was clear and unambiguous.

That changed with United States v. Dupree. Sitting en banc, the Eleventh Circuit held that the Supreme Court’s decision in Kisor v. Wilkie—which limits when courts may defer to an agency’s interpretation of its own rules—applies to the Sentencing Guidelines. After Dupree, courts may not defer to the commentary unless, …

Diverse Directions - Callie Bowland, Callie E. Bowland

B.A./B.S. Practicum Group Exhibit (ART 499)

My ceramic works explore stress, masking, and how they affect the body over time, in addition to what can be considered the true self, and how society reacts to it. They all feature an element of abstract, twisting flesh.

Reliquary uses it as a very literal interpretation of inner beauty, turning flesh and bone into an ornate vessel, playing with the parallel of the human body as a vessel for the mind. It also poses the question of what makes up a person, by contrasting the corporeal flesh and bone with a mask- like face–are we the physical body itself, …

Harness The Darkness! Blackout Poetry And Drama Therapy For Systemic Existential Dread: A Proposed Methodology, Kerry Sullivan May 2026

Harness The Darkness! Blackout Poetry And Drama Therapy For Systemic Existential Dread: A Proposed Methodology, Kerry Sullivan

Expressive Therapies Theses

This thesis explores the intersection of drama therapy and blackout poetry as a therapeutic intervention to address systemic existential dread (SED) among emerging adults. The proposed methodology is titled "Bringing Blackout Poetry to Life" and consists of five sessions designed to explore the participants’ SED and generate poetry, culminating in a public performance. By integrating elements from psychodrama and drama therapy with the therapeutic process of blackout poetry, the intervention intends to aid processing on all levels of the expressive therapies continuum (ETC), strengthen tolerance for uncertainty, and facilitate sustainable community action. This theoretical framework is supported by a wide-ranging …

Body And Size Acceptance In Dance/Movement Therapy, Kathryn Pedersen May 2026

Body And Size Acceptance In Dance/Movement Therapy, Kathryn Pedersen

Expressive Therapies Theses

The pervasiveness of anti-fat bias within American culture is growing due to the rise in popularity of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1s) and the current United States administration’s discriminatory views towards minority groups. With Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) being a body-based modality, it is necessary to examine the available literature to discover the theoretical orientations that are being used when working with fat populations. Quantitative and qualitative studies from both international and United States-based sources were reviewed, and findings indicated that while both the medicalized view of fatness and the body acceptance-based view of fatness were employed, United States-based research most …

How Art Therapy Can Be Used To Support Children Experiencing Homelessness: A Literature Review, Lila N. Murray

Expressive Therapies Theses

Art therapy and art-based programming have increasingly been introduced in a variety of service settings to children experiencing homelessness, with the belief that artmaking can promote recovery and resilience, and support mental wellbeing. Despite the presence of such programs, there is very limited research on the impact of art therapy and arts-based intervention on the lives of children experiencing homelessness. This literature review is focused on the role of art therapy in working with children who have experienced or are currently experiencing homelessness, which is defined as a form of complex trauma. This research aimed to address the following question: …

The Brain And Becoming: Integrating Play And Performance-Based Learning In The Community College Classroom, Hannah M. Green May 2026

The Brain And Becoming: Integrating Play And Performance-Based Learning In The Community College Classroom, Hannah M. Green

English

Instruction in the community college classroom is in need of a shift, according to neuroscientific, pedagogical, and demographic data. Primarily, students in today’s community college classrooms are instructed in the form of lectures (Nilson 106), but research has shown that game-based learning would be the way to enhance learning experiences for these adult learners. Game-based learning specifically takes form in student learning through games, interactive reading activities such as performance pedagogy, discussions, and small group work. While research shows that play-based learning at the community college level is neurologically beneficial for students, there is a gap in implementing play-based learning …

The Value Of Difficulty In Engineering Education To Professional Work Experience Of Early Career Engineers: A Multiple Case Study, Nosakhare Iyobosa Idiaghe May 2026

The Value Of Difficulty In Engineering Education To Professional Work Experience Of Early Career Engineers: A Multiple Case Study, Nosakhare Iyobosa Idiaghe

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Engineering education has long been characterized by rigor, intensity, and selective sorting, conditions often justified as necessary for producing capable engineers. Yet, despite the widespread assumption that academic hardship prepares students for professional practice, relatively little empirical work has examined how graduates themselves interpret the value of these difficult experiences once they enter the workforce. This dissertation addresses that gap by investigating how early-career engineers make sense of the difficulty encountered in their undergraduate education and how those experiences compare to the challenges of engineering practice.

Using a qualitative multiple‑case study design, the research draws on semi‑structured interviews with eight …

Leading While Black: An Examination Of The Black Supervisor Experience Overseeing White Subordinates In Higher Education, Colette Marie Tobias May 2026

Leading While Black: An Examination Of The Black Supervisor Experience Overseeing White Subordinates In Higher Education, Colette Marie Tobias

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

This study examines how systemic racism and social capital hierarchies shape the supervisory experiences of Black supervisors. While existing literature has explored leadership and race, it has not fully examined how systemic racism shape Black supervisors’ experiences or how social capital hierarchies play into the behavioral responses of white subordinates. This study addresses that gap by centering the lived experiences of Black supervisors within higher education.

Grounded in narrative inquiry, this research focuses on how participants make meaning of their experiences through their stories. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and reflective journals with 19 Black supervisors who had at …
