Nonfatal Strangulation And Intimate Partner Violence Decision Tree Protocol, Joy Martin
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
AbstractNonfatal Strangulation and Intimate Partner Violence Decision Tree Protocol Problem and Context Nonfatal strangulation (NFS) is the ultimate form of power and control in intimate partner violence (IPV). Native American women are at an increased risk of intimate partner violence. Symptoms of strangulation are frequently missed by first responders. Victims often decline medical examination. Victims of nonfatal strangulation can have significant long term complications and increased morbidity throughout their lives. Intervention or Innovation This project provided educational training sessions to first responders within a Native American community in the Southwestern United States to increase knowledge and comfort when responding to …
Reducing 30-Day Hospital Readmission In The Older Homebound Population: Using An Interprofessional Communication Protocol Within A Multidisciplinary Hospital At Home Program, Pamela Ann Alvey
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Home-bound patients aged 65 and older are at the highest risk for avoidable 30-day hospital readmission: a factor contributing to rising healthcare costs and comprising over 30% of Medicare’s spending. The Hospital Readmission Reduction Program (HRRP) deemed that one in five patients that were discharged from the hospital were readmitted within 30 days, resulting in an annual waste of $17 billion. The increase in homebound older patients, coupled with ongoing avoidable 30-day readmissions, resulting in poorer quality of life, makes this a critical issue for the U.S. healthcare system. A key gap identified in the prevalence of avoidable 30-day readmissions …

The provision of expert testimony in litigation has become a big business. The paradigmatic testifying expert is no longer the “amateur” expert who maintains a separate professional identity and testifies only once, or at most sporadically, in litigation to which their expertise is uniquely pertinent. Rather, they are a professional provider of litigation support services who spends a substantial part of their time, and derives a substantial part of their income from, consulting on pending or contemplated lawsuits. Legal rules concerning the provision of expert testimony continue to apply the former, obsolete paradigm of the testifying expert. This conflict of …

Racial Bias, Accomplice Liability, And The Felony Murder Rule: A National Empirical Study, G. Ben Cohen, Justin D. Levinson, Koichi Hioki
Akron Law Faculty Publications
Two long criticized prosecutorial tools—the felony murder rule and the accomplice liability doctrine—play an outsized role in the operation of American homicide law. Though each of these tools have separately faced intense criticism for their resistance to the supposedly foundational principles of moral culpability and individual responsibility, their legacy is also defined by the way they function symbiotically and specifically to heighten racialized punishment. This Article addresses the weighty combined reach of the accomplice liability doctrine and felony murder rule, and proposes that racial bias has fueled the operation and survival of these tools. Specifically, it suggests that implicit racial …
Flattening Breast Cancer By Removing The Breasts: Protecting A Woman's Right To Choose Reconstruction Of An Aesthetic Flat Chest After A Mastectomy, Amelia Landenberger
Flattening Breast Cancer By Removing The Breasts: Protecting A Woman's Right To Choose Reconstruction Of An Aesthetic Flat Chest After A Mastectomy, Amelia Landenberger
Akron Law Faculty Publications
Breast cancer takes away women’s choices. Many women decide to regain control of their bodies and prevent future cancer or follow-up surgeries by having a double mastectomy without any reconstruction, leaving a fat chest. When their doctors refuse to perform this surgery or their insurers refuse to cover this form of chest reconstruction, women are traumatized by their loss of choice in a system that clings to the outdated idea that women cannot be feminine without breasts. The Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998 was intended to protect women facing cancer from the second trauma of being unable …
The Power Of The Story, Rogelio Paquini
The Power Of The Story, Rogelio Paquini
Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries
When most people ignore the story of Scripture, there needs to be a different approach to reach them for Jesus regarding knowledge of the biblical narrative. The evangelistic system to reach this generation needs to change. The Next BIG Thing in youth ministry is returning to the power of storytelling. To reach this generation it is imperative to practice storytelling, especially the story of the Bible. Our identity as Seventh-day Adventists depends on the strength of our story in connection with prophetic and historical narratives. We get to tell a story of hope, not of disappointment; a story of cooperation …

Attention-Language Interface In Multilingual Assessment Instrument For Narratives (Main), Irina A. Sekerina, Olga Parshina, Vladislava Staroverova, Natalia Gagarina
Publications and Research
The current study employed the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives (MAIN) to test comprehension of narrative macrostructure in Russian in a visual world eye-tracking paradigm. The four MAIN visual narratives are structurally similar and question referents’ goals and internal states (IS). Previous research revealed that children’s MAIN comprehension differed among the four narratives in German, Swedish, Russian, and Turkish, but it is not clear why. We tested whether the difference in comprehension was (a) present, (b) caused by complicated inferences in understanding IS compared with goals, and (c) ameliorated by orienting visual attention to the referents whose IS was critical …

Enhancing The Perception Of Public Urban Spaces Via Place-Making: Martyrs' Square And Selected Locations In El-Gaish Street Case Study, Vert Kamal Ramzy, Nanees Abdel Hamid Mohamed Ali Elsayyad, Lamis Saad El-Din El-Gizawi
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Trust be told that urban spaces have generated a lot of controversy in recent years. The major issues that I will address in this paper are transformations in the urban environment affected by different appearances due to economic and social changes that shape their meaning through human interactions for creating a social life. With the emergence of modern architecture and planning patterns, urban spaces have become the focus of researchers for study and analysis to determine the best destination.
This paper aims to present place-making as an approach to strengthening the perception of public urban spaces and, consequently, its impact …
Protection Of Cultural Property In Armed Conflict And Military Necessity, Fausto Pocar
Protection Of Cultural Property In Armed Conflict And Military Necessity, Fausto Pocar
Intercultural Human Rights Law Review
The protection of cultural property in armed conflict has been a matter for special consideration by customary and conventional international humanitarian law since its first expressions. The Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907 already enunciated a principle of protection in this matter, as shown in particular by the Regulations concerning the laws and customs of war on land annexed to the fourth convention, which provided that in sieges and bombardments all necessary steps must be taken to spare, as far as possible, buildings dedicated to religion, art, science, or charitable purposes, historic monuments, hospitals, and places where the sick and …

Reactive Hypotheticals In Legal Education: Leveraging Ai To Create Interactive Fact Patterns, Sean Steward
Akron Law Faculty Publications
Good legal hypotheticals require carefully constructed scenarios designed to mimic the challenges and dilemmas that students will face in their future legal careers. Hypotheticals help students take abstract concepts such as negligence or res ipsa loquitor and ground them in the reality that these rules were meant to control. Yet, despite our best efforts, creating hypotheticals with a rich tapestry of facts, personalities, and complexities that characterize real-world legal practice remains challenging and time-consuming. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can solve this problem. By leveraging emerging AI technology, legal educators can create richer, more realistic hypotheticals that react to students and keep …

Medical procedures, such as radiation therapy, are a vital element in treating many cancers, significantly contributing to improved survival rates. However, a common long-term complication of such exposure is radiation-induced skin fibrosis (RISF), a complex condition that poses substantial physical and psychological challenges. Notably, about 50% of patients undergoing radiation therapy may achieve long-term remission, resulting in a significant number of survivors managing the aftereffects of their treatment. This article delves into the intricate relationship between RISF, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and angiotensin II (Ang II) signaling. It proposes the underlying mechanisms and examines potential treatments for mitigating skin fibrosis. …

A cross-sectional survey enrolling 351 patients with T2D was carried out, using the snowball sampling technique. The survey used the UK Diabetes and Diet Questionnaire and the Dietary Knowledge questionnaire to assess participants' EH including the frequency of consumption of certain foods and their knowledge of food groups and food choices. While a higher DK index …
Visual Similarity Effects In The Identification Of Arabic Letters: Evidence With Masked Priming, Maryam A. Aljassmi, Manuel Perea
Visual Similarity Effects In The Identification Of Arabic Letters: Evidence With Masked Priming, Maryam A. Aljassmi, Manuel Perea
All Works
Research using masked priming and parafoveal preview techniques has shown that visual letter similarity has an impact on word processing during the initial stages in Latin-derived scripts. However, these effects appear to be absent in Arabic. One reason for this discrepancy could be attributed to the distinctive features of the Arabic script, which includes numerous letters sharing a basic form while varying in the location or number of diacritics. To shed light on this issue, the present study employed Arabic letters rather than words in two masked priming experiments: an alphabetic decision task and a letter-matching task. Both experiments showed …

Using a qualitative research methodology and expert interviews, the findings reveal that retail SMEs predominantly adopt horizontal coopetition, such as sharing infrastructure, security services, and group buying. Few engage in platform-based coopetition with large e-commerce platforms. Organisational capability is a key factor influencing the adoption of these strategies, which prove effective in addressing the perceived threat. The study recommends that retail SMEs enhance their organisational capabilities and suggests large e-commerce platforms localise their approaches to better …

Investigating Negative Brand Perception And Toxicity In X (Formerly Twitter)., Nandin Batbold
Business ETD Collections
The rapid growth of social media has transformed brand-consumer communication and image management. Among these platforms, X (formerly Twitter) stands out for facilitating real-time interactions and fostering public discourse. While social media provides a powerful channel for engagement, its open and unmoderated nature exposes brands to risks such as negativity, trolling, and toxicity. Recent developments, particularly Elon Musk's 2022 acquisition of X and subsequent rebranding efforts, have heightened these challenges. These organisational changes, including renaming Twitter to X and altering its logo, have sparked mixed reactions from users and brands. This study explores how such drastic transformations impact user activity, …

This study critically examines McDonald's sustainability claims and practices, focusing on its greenhouse gas emissions and beef consumption. Through secondary research, the study contrasts McDonald's sustainable initiatives with data from reputable sources and climate institutions. While McDonald's has set a net-zero emissions target for 2050, its position as one of the largest beef buyers, contributing 1-2% of global beef consumption, undermines these efforts. The company’s approach to achieving net-zero emissions is described as vague and unattainable without significant changes to its plant-based menu, agricultural practices, and consumer awareness. The findings highlight a gap between McDonald’s sustainability claims and its operational …

This Article examines five cases decided during the Survey period: two decisions by the Supreme Court of Georgia and three decisions by federal courts involving Georgia defendants. The Georgia Supreme Court cases are a direct appeal and a habeas appeal. All three federal cases are habeas petitions by Georgia state prisoners. We included federal cases because they involve significant points of law and illustrate the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit’s continued lax oversight of habeas claims, decades after the passage of the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act (AEDPA) by Congress. The small number of cases …
