The Femme-Fatale “Bear’Ing Her Teeth: The Relation Between Women And Animals In Prosper Mérimée’S Lokis, William B. Holley Jan 2024

The Femme-Fatale “Bear’Ing Her Teeth: The Relation Between Women And Animals In Prosper Mérimée’S Lokis, William B. Holley

The Coastal Review

Abstract: Many French fantastic texts from the nineteenth century employ the use of a femme-fatale to highlight and underscore the dangers inherit with the female figure. This can be seen in vampires, ghosts, fairies, and other supernatural phenomena wherein a female character takes on incredible attributes. Propser Mérimée’s Lokis offers readers a tale wherein those same female figures are given traits that resemble the traditional femme-fatale, but in doing so they highlight the deadly nature of the titular half-man/half-bear creature. This paper offers a reading of Lokis which brings together an understanding of the social and political climate in which …

Gateway To The Mind: Using Eye Tracking To Explore The Broader Autism Phenotype, Joseph Molski

Open Access Master's Theses

The Broad Autism Phenotype (BAP) is a term used to describe Autism-like symptoms in individuals not diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as well as the genetic transmission of these symptoms. Within this field of study, first-degree relatives, siblings, and parents are most often studied due to the direct path of genetic transmission. Within this group, there are several measurable characteristics used to explore the BAP. Of relevance to this study are neuropsychological characteristics, specifically potential atypicality while gazing at speaking human faces. While some studies have conducted analyses with this neuropsychological characteristic with siblings, there has yet to be …

Latinx Respects: Using Theatre To Prevent Dating Violence, Heidi Adams Rueda, Patricia Newman, Kathleen Mcgee Jan 2024

Latinx Respects: Using Theatre To Prevent Dating Violence, Heidi Adams Rueda, Patricia Newman, Kathleen Mcgee

Social Work Faculty Publications

Teen dating violence is a serious health issue facing youth in the United States. A nationally representative survey found that 8.0% percent of youth who had dated within the past year had been physically hurt on purpose by a dating partner and another 6.9% had experienced sexual violence (Kann et al., 2018). Latinx females experience physical and sexual violence at higher rates compared to national averages (i.e., 9.2% and 11.1%, respectively; Kann et al., 2018). Further, nearly 30% of romantically involved youth have been victims of digital dating abuse within the past year (Hinduja & Patchin, 2021).

Sexual Health And Dating With Disabilities: Understanding The Perspectives Of Parent Resource Coordinators (Prcs), Heidi Adams Rueda, Anne Woodruff Jameson, Maggie Neujahr, Amber Godsey, Lynda Hayes, Jessica Johnson, Sam Montemarano, Carly De Bruin

Social Work Faculty Publications

Young people with disabilities have unique needs concerning dating and sexuality compared to their peers without disabilities. Research supports that young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) desire more education and support. However, young people with I/DD often lack formal and informal sex education and dating information. Despite these barriers, youth with disabilities report feeling empowered when they receive information on sexual and dating health, and when they are included in discussion with community members, family, and close friends about their dating and sexual wants and needs. This study responds to the need to better understand how to support …

Effectiveness Of Education-Based Programs And Preventative Strategies On Oral Health Outcomes For Older Adults In Rural Communities: A Critically Appraised Topic, Meagan Barnes Pearson, Abby Ellenberger, Becca Valdez Jan 2024

Effectiveness Of Education-Based Programs And Preventative Strategies On Oral Health Outcomes For Older Adults In Rural Communities: A Critically Appraised Topic, Meagan Barnes Pearson, Abby Ellenberger, Becca Valdez

Critically Appraised Topics

Elderly adults in rural populations are facing difficulties with oral health due to accessibility difficulties, lower socioeconomic status, and decreased OHL. Limited research has been conducted on occupational therapy interventions within this specific occupational domain, or with this particular population. This CAT investigates the positive impacts oral health education programs that incorporate preventative strategies have on the oral health outcomes of the aging population living in rural locations when implemented by occupational therapists alongside an interdisciplinary team.

Occupational Therapy’S Role In Transitioning & Community Integration, Payton Baumann, Madison Thomas, Anna Voegel

Critically Appraised Topics

This critically appraised topic paper will concentrate on the most effective formatting of transition programs necessary to improve a sense of community belonging and overall quality of life (QOL). The main factors to consider in the scenario are accessibility to programs, funding for programs, social stigmas and attitudes, and mental health of individuals who are experiencing a transition. Populations experiencing a transition may include those transitioning from incarceration, experiencing homelessness, educational programs, employment opportunities, hospital care settings, active-duty status, and migration. To develop a sense of community belonging, social participation will be an important aspect to integrate into interventions, which …

The Role Of Occupational Therapists Working With Adults With Substance Use Disorder In Rural Areas, Kyra M. Jessen, Jackie M. Middendorf Jan 2024

The Role Of Occupational Therapists Working With Adults With Substance Use Disorder In Rural Areas, Kyra M. Jessen, Jackie M. Middendorf

Critically Appraised Topics

This critically appraised topic paper focused on the availability of occupation-based interventions for adults (18 years and older) faced with substance use disorders in rural areas. The main factors to consider in this scenario were the population of rural areas, substance use services in rural areas, and the role of occupational therapy. The U.S. Census Bureau did not directly define rural but instead considered rural to be any area that is not urban, while urban areas were considered to have more than 50,000 people and urban clusters were stated to have between 2,500 and 50,000 people (U.S. Department of Agriculture, …

The Social Status Adversity And Health In Daily Life Moments Study: Ecological Momentary Assessment And Ambulatory Health Assessments To Examine Meaning And Mechanisms, Nataria T. Joseph, Laurel M. Peterson

All Faculty Open Access Publications

Background: African Americans and those of lower socioeconomic status (SES) are at disproportionate risk for hypertension- and cardiovascular-disease-related mortality relative to their counterparts. Progress in reducing these disparities is slowed by the facts that these disparities are difficult to mitigate in older adults and early origins of these disparities are poorly understood. The Social Status Adversity and Health in Daily Life Moments Study aims to precisely understand the proximal cognitive-emotional mechanisms by which unique social exposures disproportionately impacting these populations influence blood pressure (BP) parameters early in the lifespan and determine which individuals are more at risk. Methods: The study …

Intentional Parenthood, Contingent Fetal Personhood, And The Right To Reproductive Self-Determination, Laura Hermer Jan 2024

Intentional Parenthood, Contingent Fetal Personhood, And The Right To Reproductive Self-Determination, Laura Hermer

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article argues that intent should govern legal parenthood, regardless of the method of conception, the person’s biological or genetic relationship to the resulting embryo/fetus, or the person’s gender. This proposition is not new. This Article adds to scholarly discourse by extending the concept: Intent should not just determine parenthood, but also fetal rights. When a pregnant person establishes their procreational intent (or lack thereof) prior to birth, then both the existence (or lack thereof) of legal protections for the embryo/fetus and the gestator’s rights and duties (or lack thereof) should flow from this intent. Non-gestating gamete contributors would do …

Why Medical Error Is Killing You (And Everyone Else), Phoebe Jean-Pierre Jan 2024

Why Medical Error Is Killing You (And Everyone Else), Phoebe Jean-Pierre

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

In 2000, the infamous report To Err is Human rocked society with its focus on the pervasive danger of medical error. More than two decades later, medical error rates remain high and pose a consistent danger to patients. Today, medical error ranks as the fourth leading cause of death behind heart disease, cancer, and COVID-19. Medical error reflects the vulnerabilities of the healthcare process and may be diagnostic in nature. A large concern in responding to medical error is an overemphasis on blame and the idea that good physicians do not make mistakes. Our perspective on how to address medical …

Exploring The Efficacy Of Interpersonal Psychotherapy Via Telehealth, Damon Tichenor Jr Jan 2024

Exploring The Efficacy Of Interpersonal Psychotherapy Via Telehealth, Damon Tichenor Jr

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

The COVID-19 pandemic caused abrupt changes for healthcare providers across the globe. As a result of social distancing measures and stay-at-home orders, it was necessary that providers adapted their services to continue to reach their clients/patients. Specifically for the field of mental health, practitioners quickly and extensively adapted from a face-to-face format to providing their services using various forms of technology, otherwise known as telepsychology. Although telepsychology was established prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the rapid adjustment forced practitioners to adapt their interventions to formats in ways that had not been proven to be effective. The purpose of the current …

The Examination Of Suicidal Ideation And Ptsd Among First Responders, Amanda Catalan Jan 2024

The Examination Of Suicidal Ideation And Ptsd Among First Responders, Amanda Catalan

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

First responders are vital to our safety and protection, but this does not come without a price. First responders are often exposed to life threatening situations that put them at risk, and are exposed to those in critical condition, and unfortuantely, those who have died. This makes first responders more at risk to develop mental health conditions, particulalrly Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. (PTSD). First Responders were found to be more likely compared to civilians to develop PTSD. They were also more likely to experience suicidal ideation. First responders who met criteria for a PTSD diagnosis were also more likely to have …

Canine-Assisted Cognitive Processing Therapy: Promoting Healing For Veterans Diagnosed With Ptsd Through Canine "Battle Buddies", Shelby L. Meadows

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

Trauma related symptoms and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have long been recognized for their connection to military and veteran populations and has become a significant barrier to the provision of mental healthcare. This original contribution to practice explores the significance of Canine Assisted Therapy as a novel approach to treating trauma in veteran and military populations. An extensive literature review examines the current research and discussion on trauma-informed care. It begins with a discussion on evidence-based practices for the treatment of PTSD, including Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. This is followed by a comprehensive …

Measures Of Mood: Adaptations For Adults With Developmental Disabilities And/Or Severe Mental Illness, Tara Bord Jan 2024

Measures Of Mood: Adaptations For Adults With Developmental Disabilities And/Or Severe Mental Illness, Tara Bord

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

The COVID-19 pandemic was a source of anxiety and depression for many people, and for some it exacerbated existing mood and anxiety symptoms. Measurement of symptoms of anxiety and depression can play an important role in intervention to decrease these symptoms. However, to ensure validity of these measures, one must be able to understand the language of the screeners. An adapted Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 Item Scale were created for usage with adults with developmental disability and/or severe mental illness who may have difficulty understanding the language of the original versions of these measures. A study was …

Clinical Challenges And Experiences: Shared Knowledge From Mental Health Clinicians, Tyler Mcqueen Jan 2024

Clinical Challenges And Experiences: Shared Knowledge From Mental Health Clinicians, Tyler Mcqueen

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

Though there is an extensive need for mental health practitioners of child and adolescent psychology, there tends to be a significantly lower number of these providers compared to adult clinicians. For this reason, this study sought to provide emerging child and adolescent clinicians with a point of clinical reference to allow for more efficient and competent services to be provided. This was accomplished by increasing the reader’s foundational knowledge of child and adolescent treatment via a brief historical review, while also increasing the reader’s clinical knowledge/readiness by examining participant reported interventions/insights on the most commonly encountered therapy interfering behaviors, clinical …

Caregiver Mediated Positive Behavioral Intervention Training: A Solution For Hcbs Waitlisted Families, Nicholas P. Hoffmann Jan 2024

Caregiver Mediated Positive Behavioral Intervention Training: A Solution For Hcbs Waitlisted Families, Nicholas P. Hoffmann

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability characterized by persistent challenges in social communication and interaction, and restrictive and repetitive patterns of behavior. These challenges manifest heterogeneously, resulting in a wide range of presentations and levels of support needs for individuals with the disorder. Behavioral intervention is an empirically supported treatment designed to support early skill development for people on the spectrum. Many Kentucky caregivers rely on two Medicaid waivers, the Supports for Community Living and Michelle P Waiver for these supports. However, there are currently over 14000 people on the waitlists for these waivers. The creation and implementation …

A Domain-Agnostic Neurosymbolic Approach For Big Social Data Analysis: Evaluating Mental Health Sentiment On Social Media During Covid-19, Vedant Khandelwal, Manas Gaur, Ugur Kursuncu, Valerie L. Shalin, Amit P. Sheth Jan 2024

A Domain-Agnostic Neurosymbolic Approach For Big Social Data Analysis: Evaluating Mental Health Sentiment On Social Media During Covid-19, Vedant Khandelwal, Manas Gaur, Ugur Kursuncu, Valerie L. Shalin, Amit P. Sheth

Psychology Faculty Publications

Monitoring public sentiment via social media is potentially helpful during health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. However, traditional frequency-based, data-driven neural network-based approaches can miss newly relevant content due to the evolving nature of language in a dynamically evolving environment. Human-curated symbolic knowledge sources, such as lexicons for standard language and slang terms, can potentially elevate social media signals in evolving language. We introduce a neurosymbolic method that integrates neural networks with symbolic knowledge sources, enhancing the detection and interpretation of mental health-related tweets relevant to COVID-19. Our method was evaluated using a corpus of large datasets (approximately 12 …

Development Of An Objective Battery For Ptsd, Kathryn O'Dell Jan 2024

Development Of An Objective Battery For Ptsd, Kathryn O'Dell

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is marked by avoidance, arousal, re-experiencing, and negative mood and cognition. To date, these symptoms are assessed using self-report measures (e.g., the PCL-5) and clinician administered assessments (e.g., the CAPS-5). While these are the present gold-standard assessments for PTSD, they still are prone to bias on behalf of both the administrator and the patient. Presently, there is evidence that individuals with PTSD perform differently than individuals without PTSD on certain cognitive tasks that measure attention bias and avoidance behaviors. As such, creating a battery of these tasks may be a viable route for objectively measuring PTSD. …

Collaborative Creac Drafting: Co-Creating An Example In Context, Julie Zink Jan 2024

Collaborative Creac Drafting: Co-Creating An Example In Context, Julie Zink

School of Law Faculty Publications

The quickest way to a student’s mind is through engagement. As legal writing professors, we can assign pages on how to organize an analysis, provide helpful examples, and orally describe the process. However, some students need a more hands-on approach. In this article, I explain my process of actively engaging students to draft their first CREAC together. By collaboratively working together to assemble this ungraded CREAC over a series of classes, the students develop an understanding of how to properly organize their analysis of a discrete issue based on the assigned facts and law. For each part of the CREAC …
