Systematic Replication And Further Validation Of The Dimensions Of Grace Scale, Amanda M. Durbin
Systematic Replication And Further Validation Of The Dimensions Of Grace Scale, Amanda M. Durbin
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Recent research efforts in positive psychology and virtue ethics have inspired psychological research on many topics, including forgiveness, gratitude, optimism, character development, meaning development, and positive coping. A recent addition to this research has included the concept of grace. Emmons et al. (2017) define grace as “a gift given unconditionally and voluntarily to an undeserving person by an unobligated giver, the giver being either human or divine” (p. 279). One significant advancement in the study of grace includes the design of a research instrument to assess the experience of grace called the Dimensions of Grace Scale (Bufford et al., 2017). …
Examining The Associations Between Civic Engagement, Parenting Style, And Identity Development, Manesha Shalom Ram
Examining The Associations Between Civic Engagement, Parenting Style, And Identity Development, Manesha Shalom Ram
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
This study explored important factors that may influence an individual’s level of civic engagement in early adulthood. Associations between parenting style, personal identity dimensions, and ethnic identity were explored, as each can have a significant influence on one’s political identity (Wray-Lake et al., 2020; Yates & Youniss, 1998). Participants were 231 undergraduate students from a small liberal arts university with a mean age of 20.0 years. Measures used include the Egna Minnen av Barndoms Uppfostran–Short Form (s-EMBU) (Arrindell et al., 1999), the Dimensions of Identity Development Scale (DIDS) (Luyckx et al., 2008), the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure—Revised (MEIM-R) (Phinney & …
The Effectiveness Of Group Treatments For Veterans: A Meta-Analysis, Janine S. Hazel
The Effectiveness Of Group Treatments For Veterans: A Meta-Analysis, Janine S. Hazel
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Transitioning into civilian life after serving in the military can be a huge adjustment for many military members. The military lifestyle and culture are unique structures that become a large part of military members’ identity and belief systems. For decades, veterans have struggled with several mental health issues and other poor outcomes at higher rates than non-military individuals (i.e., depression, PTSD, suicidal ideation, homelessness, financial distress). Often, these poor outcomes can leave veterans feeling alone and misunderstood by their non-military community—impacting their ability to reintegrate into civilian life successfully. Social isolation and a lack of felt interconnectedness negatively affect veterans’ …
A Mixed-Methods Study Of Religious, Spiritual, And Psychological Change In Ireland, James D. Conway
A Mixed-Methods Study Of Religious, Spiritual, And Psychological Change In Ireland, James D. Conway
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Throughout the 20th century, over 90% of all individuals living in Ireland identified as Roman Catholic, but recent shifts have altered the country's religious landscape. According to the most recent national census, 70% of individuals still identify as Catholic (Central Statistics Office, 2023). However, they also reported a 187% increase in those claiming “no religion” over the last eleven years—making it now the second largest group (Central Statistics Office, 2023). This mixed-methods study investigated the factors behind these changes, surveying one hundred nine Irish individuals from sixteen counties using six validated measures, and conducting thirteen qualitative interviews. Quantitative and qualitative …
An Exploration Of Social Connection And Spiritual Well-Being In Young Adults, Rebecca Crowder
An Exploration Of Social Connection And Spiritual Well-Being In Young Adults, Rebecca Crowder
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Loneliness is multi-faceted, but few studies have tried to define or explore the experience of spiritual loneliness, and fewer still have explored loneliness’s relation to spiritual well-being (Chornobai, 2020). To date, no known studies have explored in what way a dyadic experience focused on spiritual exercises might impact spiritual loneliness and spiritual well-being in young adults. This study examined in what way spending time with a person in a spiritual context (i.e., practicing Lectio Divina as a dyad), impacts a person’s experience of spiritual loneliness, spiritual well-being, and friendship. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three intervention groups: Lectio …
The Impact Of Bilingualism On Visual Semantic Processing, Ancuta Margondai
The Impact Of Bilingualism On Visual Semantic Processing, Ancuta Margondai
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Bilingualism has been shown to influence a variety of cognitive aspects, including attentional control, behavioral regulation, and the adaptation to fluctuating linguistic demands. Nevertheless, the influence of bilingualism on visual semantic processing remains ambiguous, characterized by inconsistent previous findings.. The present study aims to investigate the bilingual switch cost effect, characterized by slower response times and increased inaccuracy for bilinguals, in the context of visual semantic processing.
The study is grounded in three theoretical models: the Bilingual Interactive Activation (BIA) model, the Adaptive Control Hypothesis, and the Visual World Paradigm Theory. These models hypothesize that bilinguals would demonstrate enhanced visual …
Enhancing Digital Reading Experiences For Older Adults: Investigating The Impact Of Font Selection And Hyperlinks In Newspaper Articles On Reading Speed, Comprehension, Engagement, Reading Pleasure, And Fatigue, Shalah Thomas
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This study explores the impact of font selection, hyperlink presence, memory retention, and visual acuity on digital reading experiences for older adults. Initially designed to evaluate the effects of font types and hyperlinks on reading outcomes, the study adapted its approach after participants indicated a strong dislike for hyperlinks and largely avoided using them. Using a multiple linear regression analysis, this research examines how font choices, memory, and visual acuity influence reading speed, comprehension, engagement, pleasure, and fatigue. Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) analysis was employed to address multicollinearity. Results indicate that familiar fonts, strong memory retention, and good visual acuity …
Analyzing The Perceived Increase In Anxiety Amongst Students At The Dalles Middle School, Ryan Ladouceur
Analyzing The Perceived Increase In Anxiety Amongst Students At The Dalles Middle School, Ryan Ladouceur
Doctor of Education (EdD)
The purpose of this qualitative exploratory study is to gain a greater understanding of the root causes of the perceived increase of anxiety amongst middle school students at The Dalles Middle School (TDMS). Students, along with their parents/guardians, are reporting increased anxiety that is preventing them from attending school, completing homework, taking tests, being around peers, and much more. It is imperative to gain a deeper understanding of what is creating higher levels of anxiety amongst adolescents which would allow public schools to implement data-driven interventions at multiple different levels that will begin to hopefully mitigate these high levels of …

Études primaires
We investigated the availability and use of workplace mental health (MH) supports during the COVID-19 pandemic in a Canadian cohort of healthcare workers (HCW) and measured anxiety and depression by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) completed at four contacts 2020–2022. Reports were available for 4400 HCW working with patients. Half the HCWs had a clinically significant HADS score at one or more contacts Access to MH supports increased during the pandemic, with 94% reporting access to some workplace support by 2022: 47% had made use of at least one support. 25% of those with high HADS scores used …
Loper Bright In A Larger Interpretive Perspective: Is This Justice Scalia’S Court Anymore?, Victoria Frances Nourse
Loper Bright In A Larger Interpretive Perspective: Is This Justice Scalia’S Court Anymore?, Victoria Frances Nourse
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo has left administrative lawyers agog: Could the Supreme Court really reverse the “goliath” known as Chevron deference? For those who study the Court’s interpretive landscape more broadly, however, Chevron reversal may not be as unexpected as administrative lawyers believe. This Article will look at Loper Bright by linking three notable interpretive developments: the major questions doctrine, Chevron skepticism, and strict constructions of statutory text. These developments share the same risk: the Court is imposing a new “clarity tax” on both Congress and administrative agencies. Having said this, others’ grave worries about changes in Chevron are …

A Second Chance At Success: Using “Second Look” Laws To Modify Sentences Of Juvenile Offenders, Sophia M. Adams
A Second Chance At Success: Using “Second Look” Laws To Modify Sentences Of Juvenile Offenders, Sophia M. Adams
Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)
“Second look” sentencing laws allow incarcerated individuals to petition to have their sentences reexamined and potentially reduced after they have served a significant period of incarceration. This rehabilitative relief is conditioned upon an offender showing that they have made meaningful positive changes while incarcerated and would not pose a threat to their community if released. Implementing second look laws is particularly appropriate in the context of offenders who have committed crimes as juveniles. The U.S. Supreme Court has recognized that juvenile offenders are less culpable than their adult counterparts and psychological science supports this conclusion. This Comment examines and compares …

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
A workshop to train practitioners in real-time new product development (NPD) using generative artificial intelligence (AI) was conducted. Three teams of graduate students in Engineering and Technology Management (many with work experience as managers and engineers) were given minimalist instructions to develop a product concept and a preliminary marketing plan for a product of their choosing within six hours using ChatGPT, search engines, and other Internet-based tools. The product was to be novel, and the plan was to include customer identification, market analysis, generating personas, and a 15-minute presentation at the end of the workshop. The goal was to 'inspire …

The feeling of belonging to a community that adopts a protective stance for the well-being of its members is an essential human need. It is well known that LGBTQ+ people experience more stress than other social groups because of discrimination, stigmatization, and self-stigmatization. Therefore, their connectedness to the LGBTQ+ community functions crucially in receiving social support. However, no study in Türkiye has yet comprehensively investigated the community connectedness of people identifying as LGBTQ+. Thus, the current study adapted Frost and Meyer’s (2012) LGBT Community Connectedness Scale to Turkish. This scale was designed to measure the connectedness of LGBT individuals to …

Previous research with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and various sexually and gender diverse (LGBTQ+) people has largely highlighted how experiences of discrimination and marginalization, and mental health outcomes are related. However, it is important that researchers operate from a strength-based approach to identify how aspects of one's identity may foster resilience. It is crucial that people working with LGBTQ+ individuals have empirically supported and culturally verified measures to assess such constructs. In this regard, the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Positive Identity Measure (LGB-PIM) developed by Riggle et al. (2014) was aimed to be translated into Turkish, examining its psychometric …

Adverse Childhood Experiences Of Professional School Counselors As Predictors Of Compassion Satisfaction, Burnout, And Secondary Traumatic Stress, Eric M. Brown, Melanie Burgess, Kristy L. Carlisle, Desmond Franklin Davenport, Michelle W. Brasfield
Counseling & Human Services Faculty Publications
School counselors work closely with students and are often the first point of contact regarding traumatic experiences. It is generally understood that exposure to other individuals’ trauma may lead to a reduction in compassion satisfaction and an increase in secondary traumatic stress, while long-term exposure may result in professional burnout. This study examined the role of school counselors’ (N = 240) own adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) as related to compassion satisfaction, secondary traumatic stress, and burnout. Results indicated that 50% of the professional school counselors in this convenience sample had personal histories of four or more ACEs, which is significantly …

Human services professionals (HSPs) are poised to contribute to interprofessional collaboration (IPC) in Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH) settings as care enhancers. Interprofessional Education (IPE) effective for training HSPs requires changes or addition to curriculum. The purpose of the current study was to present workshops adjunct to curriculum to HSPs targeting their engagement in IBH settings. The study explored their self-efficacy with IPC after such training using a pre- and post-test design. Results indicated a statistically significant increase in self-efficacy from before and after the workshop. Discussion includes implications for human services educators in using workshops to augment the IPE their …

Informed Traffic Signal Preemption For Emergency Vehicles, Ioana Silaghi, Zobaida Alssadi, Marius Silaghi
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
Emergency vehicle traffic light preemption systems are extended by using more detailed predicted trajectories to provide favorable changes of signals. The location of the emergency vehicle is tracked and traffic signals on the requested travel route are contacted and switched to become green in time, before the emergency vehicle reaches the selected intersection. The resulting time to destination obtained by our simulation is compared to a control simulation without preemption. In simulations, when an emergency vehicle reaches a red light, a delay of five seconds is considered to happen naturally to the vehicle’s journey due to preventive driving. The switching …
Retrenching Speech Protective Thresholds In Trademark Law, Jake Linford
Retrenching Speech Protective Thresholds In Trademark Law, Jake Linford
Scholarly Publications
In their article, Raising the Threshold for Trademark Infringement to Protect Free Expression, Christine Haight Farley and Lisa Ramsey argue in favor of a speech-protective fair use test that would replace multiple tests applied by the U.S. Courts of Appeals when a defendant's alleged infringement has either informational or expressive elements. This Response explains why this raised threshold test is unlikely to be adopted following the U.S. Supreme Court's retrenchment of speech-protective thresholds in Jack Daniel's Properties, Inc. v. VIP Productions, LLC. That prediction is bolstered by the Court's likely holding in Vidal v. Elster. Readers persuaded that current defensive …

The Role Of Psychological Capital In Shaping Leaders’ Attitudes Toward Artificial Intelligence: Mindset Meets Machine, Justin W. Carter, John A. Parnell, Steven Puckett
Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics
Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to revolutionize the construction industry, yet the pivotal role of leaders’ attitudes in its successful adoption is undeniable. This study explores these attitudes' potential positive psychological drivers, leveraging the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Innovation Resistance Theory (IRT) to dissect the complex interplay of factors influencing AI adoption. We hypothesize that Psychological Capital (PsyCap’s) plays a role in shaping leaders' positive and negative attitudes toward AI. Results show that PsyCap was a significant driver of both positive and negative attitudes. Moreover, negative attitudes toward AI partially mediated the link between PsyCap and positive attitudes, underscoring …

Expecting Better When You’Re Expecting: Empowering Mothers Through Occupational Therapy, Ann K. Landreville
Occupational Therapy Capstones
The maternal health crisis of the United States presents an opportunity to improve the level of care provided to the maternal population. A new standard of care must be established, going beyond decreasing maternal mortality and morbidity rates, but instead working to promote the health and well-being of mothers. While many well-recognized health professionals currently play a role on the interdisciplinary care team for postpartum mothers, occupational therapists are emerging in this field, proving they have a vital role in providing services that addresses the current gap in care. Many professions largely address physical health; occupational therapists have a holistic …

Sensory Home Programming Handouts, Taylor Ann Koopmeiners
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Background: Sensory processing is the way the brain and nervous system receive sensory information (Star Institute, 2023). When there are difficulties with processing sensory information, it is called Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). Consequently, the inability to process sensory input results in affected motor and behavioral responses (Star Institute, 2023. This creates difficulty in participating in necessary tasks such as activities of daily living (ADLs), social participation, and school (Lane et al., 2019; Star Institute, 2023). Occupational therapists address these challenges by providing sensory activities in therapeutic sessions and as part of home programming (Gabriele, 2020). The goal of this scholarly …

Bridges To Bright Beginnings: A Resource Guide For Caregivers Of Infants Diagnosed With Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (Nas), Makayla E. Murden
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Background Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is a condition that happens in newborn babies who were exposed to illicit substances or opiates while in the womb. The baby becomes dependent on the substances and will experience withdrawal symptoms after birth. Between 2010 and 2017, NAS births increased by 131%. Approximately 6.6% of pregnant women admitted to using prescription opioids, of which 21.2% acknowledged misuse. A significant portion (31.9%) of these women reported not receiving information on the potential effects of opioid use on their unborn baby. Infants exposed to opioids in utero are at higher risk of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit …

Occupational Therapy Capstones
The proposed program is a mental health program, targeting meaningful daily occupations for the population of first responders facing trauma fatigue and antecedents of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms related to stress from work. For individuals who serve as first responders, there is significant prevalence for trauma exposure, leading to trauma fatigue due to events encountered on the job. Mazur and Collins (2023) found that 80% of police and first responders experience traumatic events on the job and that 25% have experienced suicidal ideation due to impacts of trauma exposure. There is a lack of professional mental health services supporting this …

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to create educational materials for cancer survivors and their caregivers/families on the topics of adaptive equipment and intimacy/sexuality. A person is considered a cancer survivor at any point after receiving a cancer diagnosis, regardless of what stage they are at in their course of treatment (American Cancer Society, 2024). The rate of cancer survivors within the United States has grown drastically over the past several years, due to advances in treatment and early detection (Cronin et al., 2022). Cancer survivors experience many changing side effects during and after treatment that influence the way …
