Landscape Design That Enhances Socialization And Community Through Climate Resilience, Guidelines For North Texas Universities., Melissa N. Brown

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

Landscape architects must balance social, economic, and environmental considerations while creating places that people will love. And, in the words of American Society for Landscape Architects Fellow Mary Margaret Jones: “If we don’t make places people love, they won’t be taken care of”. (ALSA Interview, n.d.) Consideration for the user experience will result in spaces that people are more likely to love.

The growing student population at the University of Texas at Arlington means that every space must be used to its full potential. The green and open spaces on a university campus are more than circulatory routes between buildings. …

Designing Dreams, Not Divides: Speculative Toolkit For Assessing Community Engagement Strategies – South Oak Cliff Renaissance Park In Dallas, Texas, Heena Shrestha

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

Community engagement in park design is critical in landscape architecture as it concerns the design in underserved communities where systemic inequities limit access to high-quality public spaces. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a toolkit to help landscape architects measure how successful their community engagement practices are in their design process. This toolkit addresses a critical gap in landscape architecture practice, where existing case studies often focus on environmental or social outcomes but need more methods for evaluating community engagement. By providing a structured approach, this toolkit enables landscape architects to measure, demonstrate, and validate their community engagement …

Glutamate Optimization As A Treatment For Depression: A Clinical Guideline, Luisa Angeles Collins Villares

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive

Based on the use of drugs to treat hypertension and tuberculosis for depression, the monoamine hypothesis led to the development of antidepressants in 1952. Serotonin was recognized as a deficiency associated with depression in 1967. As a fine-tuning orchestration of neurotransmitters and neuromodulators, the glutamate system became known using Spravato in 2019 and Auvelity in 2022. In this pilot study, mental health experts rated the importance of 24 science-based recommendations to optimize glutamatergic therapy in depression for a proposed guideline on a Likert scale from zero to four. The results were analyzed using a non-parametric predictive modeling method called Chi-Square …

Sticks And Stones: A Look At The Effects Of Microinsults And Stereotype Threat On Sustainable Career Outcomes, Shona G. Smith Jan 2024

Sticks And Stones: A Look At The Effects Of Microinsults And Stereotype Threat On Sustainable Career Outcomes, Shona G. Smith

Management Dissertations - Archive

Subtle forms of workplace discrimination have many adverse consequences for employees and organizations (Jones et al., 2016). Microinsults – a type of microaggression “characterized by interpersonal or environmental communications that convey stereotypes, rudeness, and insensitivity and that demean a person’s racial, gender, or sexual orientation, heritage, or identity” (Sue, 2010, p. 31) – are one form of subtle discrimination that may be pervasive in organizations. As they are invisible and ambiguous (Sue et al., 2008), some research suggests that microinsults are more taxing than overt forms of discrimination because they involve guesswork and sensemaking for the target to process their …

Binding Norms: Three Essays On The Effect Of Cultural Tightness On Consumer Behavior, Shashi Minchael Jan 2024

Binding Norms: Three Essays On The Effect Of Cultural Tightness On Consumer Behavior, Shashi Minchael

Marketing Dissertations - Archive

Cultural Tightness-Looseness reflects the variability in how different cultures mandate strict adherence to social norms and allow deviation from the social norms reflected in sanctions on norm violations. The three-essay dissertation aims to advance our understanding of the effect of cultural tightness (vs. looseness) and the resulting societal emphasis on norm adherence on consumer behavior. Specifically, the proposed research examines the effect of differences in societal norms regarding consumer frugality, system justification, and beliefs regarding the malleability of the world and individuals on consumer decision-making. In essay 1, I study the effect of societal norms regarding frugality in tight (vs. …

Public Confidence, Judges, And Politics On And Off The Bench, Bruce A. Green, Rebecca Roiphe Jan 2024

Public Confidence, Judges, And Politics On And Off The Bench, Bruce A. Green, Rebecca Roiphe

Faculty Scholarship

Public confidence in the judiciary is at a low point. There are multiple reasons for the public’s waning faith in judges, but the perception that they are merely politicians in robes plays a significant part. This article analyzes the politicization of the judiciary and argues that while ideology invariably affects judicial decisionmaking, the professional identity of judges limits its impact. A commitment to judicial norms and processes as well as a concern for professional reputation serve as a real break on partisan loyalty and affiliation. The task is to preserve and promote this professional identity and convey to the public …

Posttraumatic Stress And Drug Use: Ethnic-Racial Identity As A Moderator For Women Of Color Enduring Partner Violence, Jewelia J. Ferguson Jan 2024

Posttraumatic Stress And Drug Use: Ethnic-Racial Identity As A Moderator For Women Of Color Enduring Partner Violence, Jewelia J. Ferguson

Open Access Master's Theses

Intimate partner violence is highly prevalent, with approximately 1 in 2 women reporting experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV) at some point in their lifetime. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is etiologically tied to trauma -- including experiences of IPV --and is associated with drug use-related harm. Women of color experience higher rates of IPV, PTSD, and drug use-related harm compared to their white counterparts; however, a dearth of research has been conducted on the relation between PTSD symptoms and drug use-related harm among women of color experiencing IPV. Moreover, a dearth of research has identified factors that may ameliorate the …

Open Access Master's Theses

Black women who have sex with other women (WSW) face unique challenges that impact their sexual health. Yet, limited research has examined the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), internalized homophobia, sexual shame, and sexual dysfunction within this population. The purpose of this study was threefold: 1) to test the association between sexual and emotional abuse and sexual functioning, 2) to test the relationship between childhood sexual abuse and both internalized and sexual shame, and 3) to test the association between internalized homophobia and sexual shame with sexual functioning among Black WSW. A sample of 154 Black WSW was recruited …

The Moderating Role Of Trait Impulsivity On Sensitivity To Reward And Alcohol Craving, Anna Sherman Jan 2024

The Moderating Role Of Trait Impulsivity On Sensitivity To Reward And Alcohol Craving, Anna Sherman

Open Access Master's Theses

Alcohol use is associated with an increased risk of negative consequences such as poor physical and mental health outcomes (e.g., alcohol-related severe injury, depression, anxiety) in addition to financial and relational difficulties, particularly for young adults (i.e., individuals ages 18 to 25) due to their disproportionately high rates of alcohol use. Alcohol craving (i.e., the strong desire to consume alcohol) is a key factor related to increased use for clinical populations, but scant research has examined craving and its associated factors among young adults. Reward sensitivity (i.e., the desire to obtain appetitive stimuli) and impulsivity (i.e., rash action without consideration …

Spaces Of Citizenship: Negotiating Belonging Through Cold War Literature And Culture, Daria Goncharova Jan 2024

Spaces Of Citizenship: Negotiating Belonging Through Cold War Literature And Culture, Daria Goncharova

Theses and Dissertations--English

At the height of Cold War containment culture, when fears of Communism and nuclear warfare overlapped with anxieties about homosexuality, gender inversion, miscegenation, and juvenile delinquency, formal citizenship—narrowly defined as one’s legal status—did not provide all American citizens with a sense of belonging, equal access to civil liberties, and a reasonable degree of safety. Instead, spatialized identity, rather than civic responsibilities and legal rights, came to define the boundaries of proper citizenship. In this context, highly exclusionary suburbs, which sprang up outside major metropolitan areas in the late 1940s-1950s, emerged as a cornerstone of the cultural narratives defining American citizenship. …

Trust And Knowing In Nineteenth-Century American Literature: Fictional Genres And Metacognitive Disruptions, Jessica Marie Van Gilder Jan 2024

Trust And Knowing In Nineteenth-Century American Literature: Fictional Genres And Metacognitive Disruptions, Jessica Marie Van Gilder

Theses and Dissertations--English

This dissertation investigates how constructions of trust can be undermined or reinforced by examining trust’s entanglement with our compulsive and subjective desire to know in nineteenth-century American literature. Specifically, I analyze how different fictional genres – satire, historical romance, fantastic, and gothic – respond to our desire to know through the types of trust fictional texts feature and construct with the reader. In doing so, I demonstrate how genres of fiction in nineteenth-century America function as dynamic social contracts that amplify and undermine the reader’s trust in larger sociopolitical systems (e.g., national identity) and the epistemologies that underpin those systems …

Effects Of Neonatal Estradiol Treatment On Regulating Sexual Differentiation Of Daily Rhythms Underlying Diet-Induced Obesity In Female Mice, Samuel Nwadialo Jan 2024

Effects Of Neonatal Estradiol Treatment On Regulating Sexual Differentiation Of Daily Rhythms Underlying Diet-Induced Obesity In Female Mice, Samuel Nwadialo

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Sex differences of the brain and behavior often require the combination of organizational and activational effects of sex hormones. The activational effects of estrogens in adult female mice protect daily eating and activity rhythms from disruption by high-fat diet feeding and inhibit diet-induced obesity. However, male mice have disrupted eating rhythms when fed high-fat diet and this causes obesity. Treatment of adult male mice with estradiol does not protect rhythms from disruption by high-fat diet, as it does in females. In this study, we sought to determine whether the organizational effects of estradiol masculinize the daily eating and activity rhythms …

Beyond The Hands: Exploring Intersectional Identities Of Black American Sign Language Users, Tatum Turner Jan 2024

Beyond The Hands: Exploring Intersectional Identities Of Black American Sign Language Users, Tatum Turner

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

There is a significant gap in research related to the impact of intersectionality on linguistic identity performance among individuals negotiating multiple marginalized identities. This gap is especially significant among deaf Black and African American individuals who use the American Sign Language (ASL) variety deemed Black American Sign Language (BASL) (Hairston & Smith, 1983). This research aims to identify and discuss the use of the eight distinguishing features of BASL (McCaskill et al. 2011) as indexes of intersectional identities.

My data consists of videos sourced from YouTube, each chosen according to the following criteria: must have at least one self-identifying Black …

What’S Harm Reduction Got To Do With It? A Study Of The Implementation Of Substance Use Management Practices Among A Sample Of U.S. Domestic Violence Programs, Stephanie H. Ratliff Jan 2024

What’S Harm Reduction Got To Do With It? A Study Of The Implementation Of Substance Use Management Practices Among A Sample Of U.S. Domestic Violence Programs, Stephanie H. Ratliff

Theses and Dissertations--Social Work

Domestic violence programs are essential resources for survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). Programs offer services that go beyond providing safety and shelter. To improve outcomes, program staff have expanded services to meet the needs of survivors. One population of survivors that has gained attention in the peer-reviewed literature is survivors who use substances (SWUS). These survivors have unique needs and are at increased risk of IPV due to substance misuse. Research about the support available to SWUS after they access shelter is scarce. Using cross-sectional data from a national sample of 97 U.S. domestic violence programs, this study describes …

Fathers’ Perspectives On The Role Of Spirituality In Substance Misuse Disorder Treatment And Engaging With Their Children, Kendra Michelle Eubank Jan 2024

Fathers’ Perspectives On The Role Of Spirituality In Substance Misuse Disorder Treatment And Engaging With Their Children, Kendra Michelle Eubank

Theses and Dissertations--Social Work

The father's role and the extent of involvement with his children have shifted over the past several decades. As a result, researchers have made considerable advances in understanding paternal influences on child development and families. However, one under-researched topic is how fathers' substance misuse, and the recovery process may influence father involvement and effective co-parenting, and specifically, how spirituality plays a role in that. In this qualitative study, fourteen participants participated in semi-structured interviews. The data revealed two main themes: 1) pillars of a spiritual awakening and 2) applying spirituality to healthy fatherhood engagement.

These findings led to four interpretations: …

The Performance Of Marginal Modeling Methods For Rare Events With Application To Opioid Overdose Mortality And Morbidity, Shawn Nigam Jan 2024

The Performance Of Marginal Modeling Methods For Rare Events With Application To Opioid Overdose Mortality And Morbidity, Shawn Nigam

Theses and Dissertations--Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Opioid misuse is a nationwide epidemic, with Kentucky having one of the highest opioid overdose-related fatality rates across all US states. These rates have increased significantly over the past decade, with particularly large increases during the COVID-19 pandemic. This dissertation aims to study the behavior of these increases and the methods for the marginal modeling of count outcomes related to opioid overdose.

Opioid overdose-related fatality rates in Kentucky increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this chapter, we characterize the changes in opioid overdose fatality rates in Kentucky and identify associations between potential factors and fatality rates. County-level opioid overdose …

Why Do My Coworkers Share Their Work-Related Good News With Me? Coworker Capitalization, Motive Attribution, And Implications, Chenduo Du Jan 2024

Why Do My Coworkers Share Their Work-Related Good News With Me? Coworker Capitalization, Motive Attribution, And Implications, Chenduo Du

Theses and Dissertations--Management

While research on close relationships suggests that individuals can benefit from capitalization or sharing positive events, it is unclear whether similar benefits hold for coworker capitalization or sharing work-related positive events with coworkers. Given that coworkers typically possess less intimate knowledge of one another compared to those in close relationships, it is plausible that they may interpret each other’s actions in diverse ways. Thus, I introduce attribution theory as a novel framework for understanding the effects of coworker capitalization. I suggest that when a coworker shares a positive event, recipients may attribute one of three motives to the discloser: a …

On The Principles And Ends Of Education: A Thomistic Approach, Keith Parkinson Jan 2024

On The Principles And Ends Of Education: A Thomistic Approach, Keith Parkinson

Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy

This dissertation develops an account of the nature of education from a Thomistic point of view. The thesis is that education is best understood as ‘human growth’—growth, because it is the natural development of potentialities inherent within the human person toward full actualization, and human, because it pertains in particular to those faculties of reason that are unique to human beings among all natural creatures, the intellect and will. The first three chapters provide an overview of Thomistic anthropology and virtue theory, from which I conclude that the final goal toward which all genuinely educational activity aims is the speculative …

Relationality In Rousseau's Philosophy Of Education, Thayne Cameron Jan 2024

Relationality In Rousseau's Philosophy Of Education, Thayne Cameron

Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy

Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s assertion of Emile that “Our true study is that of the human condition” serves as the foundation for this dissertation, which examines the significance of certain kinds of basic experiential relationships in Rousseau’s philosophy of education. By analyzing the relationships between the self and objects, the self and others, and the educator and the learner, this work elucidates how these interactions underpin Rousseau’s pedagogical views and their implications for fostering personal and social virtue.

The dissertation explores the self-object relationship through affectivity, embodiment, and purposeful activity, demonstrating how direct engagement with objects shapes perceptions and behaviors. It then …

Speaking, Running, Leading: Black Women In American Politics, Sherelle A. Roberts

Theses and Dissertations--Political Science

This dissertation examines African American women as constituents, candidates, and policy entrepreneurs. It illuminates the ways in which Black women navigate the complexities of politics, while balancing their equally complex intersectional identities. It critiques the notion of African American women as politically marginalized actors and highlights the ways in which they surmount social, cultural, and political disadvantage to gain political success.

Recovery Capital In A Justice-Involved Population: An Asset-Based Approach To Recovery And Community Reentry, Evan Joseph Batty Jan 2024

Recovery Capital In A Justice-Involved Population: An Asset-Based Approach To Recovery And Community Reentry, Evan Joseph Batty

Theses and Dissertations--Sociology

The burden of the opioid epidemic demands further efforts to facilitate recovery, particularly for disadvantaged populations and those recently released from prison. After community reentry, individuals face a period of vulnerability as they adjust to new roles and responsibilities to meet their basic needs. Prison-based substance use disorder treatment (SUD Tx) programs provide support to help prepare individuals with SUD for their release and facilitate successful recovery goals after community reentry. This dissertation has three aims: (1) further the understanding of potential barriers and facilitators of recovery after community reentry, (2) assess how prison-levels of recovery capital influence recovery outcomes …
