Journal of Engineering Research

The Urban waterfronts of submerged heritage cities hold significant cultural and natural value that necessitates preservation. However, these sites suffer from a disconnection between nature and culture in heritage conservation practices, negatively impacting heritage sites, ecosystems, and human well-being. Biophilic urbanism offers a valuable tool to address this gap, creating healthier cities. This paper explores how to implement biophilic urbanism elements in conserving urban waterfronts of submerged heritage cities. Through a comprehensive literature review, the study discusses the gap between heritage and nature in conservation practices and explores the perception of biophilic urbanism elements in conserving the urban waterfront of …

Brain Connectivity And Academic Skills In English Learners, Tehila Nugiel, Damion V Demeter, Mackenzie E Mitchell, Annacarolina Garza, Arturo E Hernandez, Jenifer Juranek, Jessica A Church

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

English learners (ELs) are a rapidly growing population in schools in the United States with limited experience and proficiency in English. To better understand the path for EL's academic success in school, it is important to understand how EL's brain systems are used for academic learning in English. We studied, in a cohort of Hispanic middle-schoolers (n = 45, 22F) with limited English proficiency and a wide range of reading and math abilities, brain network properties related to academic abilities. We applied a method for localizing brain regions of interest (ROIs) that are group-constrained, yet individually specific, to test how …

A Culturally Grounded Approach To Nepalese Grandmothers’ Caring Work: Developing Dohori As A Narrative Methodology, Kusum Bhatta

The Qualitative Report

The social sciences have a growing seismic shift from prioritising positivist, objective, and generalizable knowledge to accepting subjective qualitative knowledge. This has given rise to various art-based methods that leverage multi-sensory storytelling/narrative. To further advance innovation in qualitative narrative methods, I will present the Dohori narrative, an indigenous Nepali poetic storytelling method for narrative research with older grandmothers doing care work. I start by presenting a discourse on Dohori to understand better the history and traditional and cultural underpinning of the method. Association Between Interpretation Flexibility And Emotional Health In An Anxious Sample: The Challenge Of Measuring Flexible Adoption Of Multiple Perspectives, Julie L. Ji, Elske Salemink, Bethany A. Teachman Jan 2024

Association Between Interpretation Flexibility And Emotional Health In An Anxious Sample: The Challenge Of Measuring Flexible Adoption Of Multiple Perspectives, Julie L. Ji, Elske Salemink, Bethany A. Teachman

School of Psychology

Interpreting ambiguous situations in a rigidly negative manner contributes to emotional disorders. Although negative interpretation biases have been well studied in relation to anxiety and depression, the relationship between interpretation flexibility (vs. rigidity) and emotional health remains understudied. The present study is a secondary analysis to test the hypothesis that higher interpretation flexibility is associated with better emotional health, as indicated by lower anxiety and depression levels, and higher quality of life. Here, interpretation flexibility focuses specifically on the ability to recognize multiple possible interpretations within and across ambiguous situations. Using baseline data from N = 939 high trait-anxious community …

Situational Awareness While Flying A Uav: A Comparison Of Video Gamer And Non-Video Gamer Pilots, Rochelle Potdar

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Unmanned aerial vehicles, also known as drones, are an important part of today’s society due to their vast use in various industries. However, there is a growing concern about the lack of situational awareness of drone operators due to the increase in the number of drone mishaps. This has led researchers to investigate if pilots or video game players would be better unmanned aerial vehicle operators due to the similarity of flying an aircraft and playing video games to flying a drone. Hence, the purpose of this study is to investigate whether the video game playing habits of pilots can …

“I’M Staying And You’Re Gonna Love Me”: Finding Authentic Freedom & Fostering Belonging As Black Female Early Faculty, Roszina D. Scott, Tinotenda Mupambo

The Journal of Advancing Education Practice

The purpose of this reflection is to expand the knowledge on the retention of early Black female faculty by exploring their challenges and triumphs in dismantling Whiteness and developing an authentic sense of belonging in the academy. In higher education, Black women experience marginalization at the intersection of anti-black racism and sexism. Faculty of color experience racial microaggressions, excessive workloads and service expectations, and their expertise is seldom recognized. Despite these challenges, marginalized faculty authentically persist and find a sense of belonging within the ivory tower by building mentorship relationships, departmental DEI efforts, opportunities for innovation, and cultivating Black sisterhood. …

Human factors are the application of scientific insights concerning people and systems to optimize system performance. Given that human beings are integral to every aspect of systems, the potential for human errors stemming from stress, fatigue, or complacency is significant. In aviation, where errors can lead to catastrophic consequences, it is imperative to take comprehensive preventive measures. Our objective is to analyze major human factors issues contributing to aviation accidents, identifying patterns, and generating recommendations to enhance safety regulations and prevent future accidents. Additionally, we aim to assess the financial impact of accidents on the aviation industry. By thoroughly reviewing …
