From The Lower East Side To "Seinfeld": The Radicalization And Corporatization Of American Jewish Identity, Louie Siegel Mar 2024

From The Lower East Side To "Seinfeld": The Radicalization And Corporatization Of American Jewish Identity, Louie Siegel

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

This essay details the vastly different public expressions of American Jewish identity in the twentieth century through the areas of entertainment and social activism. Critical to this study is a notion I call the Jewish Radical Tradition of Solidaric Jewishness - our culture’s historical legacy of aligning Jewish values with the fight to liberate all oppressed groups, supporting mutual emancipation from systems of social, political, and economic domination that elevate a few individuals at the expense of the collective. I argue that the twentieth century represented the ultimate battle within the American Jewish community to decide what form of Jewishness …

“I Don’T Even Know What That Is”: Deprivation, Censorship, And Responsibility In Administering The Pell Grant In Prison, Erin L. Castro, Cydney Y. Caradonna, Mary R. Gould

Journal of Student Financial Aid

The violence of incarceration creates greater responsibility for higher education administrators in supporting students who are in prison. Using focus group data with incarcerated students and formerly incarcerated alumni who participated in or are actively participating in Second Chance Pell, we explore their perceptions and understandings of the Pell Grant and eligibility for the Pell Grant, including lifetime eligibility used limits. Through a lens of Witnessing, we argue that deprivation and censorship of information negatively influence students’ access to accurate and timely information about federal student aid and their ability to fully participate in the process. Accordingly, college and university …

Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background Theory and correlational research indicate organizational leadership and climate are important for successful implementation of evidence‑based practices (EBPs) in healthcare settings; however, experimental evidence is lacking. We addressed this gap using data from the WISDOM (Working to Implement and Sustain Digital Outcome Measures) hybrid type III effectiveness‑implementation trial. Primary outcomes from WISDOM indicated the Leadership and Organizational Change for Implementation (LOCI) strategy improved fidelity to measurement‑based care (MBC) in youth mental health services. In this study, we tested LOCI’s hypothesized mechanisms of change, namely: (1) LOCI will improve implementation and transformational leadership, which in turn will (2) mediate LOCI’s …

Now It’S Your Turn!: Eye Blink Rate In A Jenga Task Modulated By Interaction Of Task Wait Times, Effortful Control, And Internalizing Behaviors, Kelley E. Gunther Mar 2024

Now It’S Your Turn!: Eye Blink Rate In A Jenga Task Modulated By Interaction Of Task Wait Times, Effortful Control, And Internalizing Behaviors, Kelley E. Gunther

Faculty Publications

Dopamine is a versatile neurotransmitter with implications in many domains, including anxiety and effortful control. Where high levels of effortful control are often regarded as adaptive, other work suggests that high levels of effortful control may be a risk factor for anxiety. Dopamine signaling may be key in understanding these relations. Eye blink rate is a non-invasive proxy metric of midbrain dopamine activity. However, much work with eye blink rate has been constrained to screen-based tasks which lack in ecological validity. We tested whether changes in eye blink rate during a naturalistic effortful control task differ as a function of …

Understanding Teacher Perceptions Around Feedback, Cari Ann Sloan Mar 2024

Understanding Teacher Perceptions Around Feedback, Cari Ann Sloan

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This narrative research study sought to better understand teachers’ perceptions around feedback, specifically the significant drivers of quality teacher feedback and the effect of the evaluator/teacher relationship. The theoretical frameworks of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, adult learning theory, social learning theory, and self-determination theory were examined to determine what the research reveals about adults’ incentive to improve. Research around accepted best practices in feedback was also reviewed in order to understand current implementation in educational settings, specifically what motivates teachers when given feedback on instruction. Four teachers, chosen for their specific characteristics, gave first-hand accounts of their experiences with the …

Changing The Culture Of Ecology From The Ground Up, Elsa Abs, Moira Hough Mar 2024

Changing The Culture Of Ecology From The Ground Up, Elsa Abs, Moira Hough

Michigan Tech Publications

We are two early career soil ecologists in academia who entered the field of soil ecology with the goal of studying soil-climate feedbacks to make meaningful contributions to climate change mitigation. Although our training and research extensively focused on the effects of climate change on soil ecosystems, we were not trained during our PhD nor incentivized as postdocs to work on solutions for climate change mitigation. So the question we ask here is: Given the consensus among ecologists about the urgency of the climate crisis, why is our field not promoting more solutions-oriented research in training and practice? In this …

Development Of Novel Algorithms For The Investigation Of Small Displacement Optical Flow For Opto Kinetic Nystagmus (Okn) Detection And Large Displacement Optical Flow For Surveillance, Jaiseeli C Mar 2024

Development Of Novel Algorithms For The Investigation Of Small Displacement Optical Flow For Opto Kinetic Nystagmus (Okn) Detection And Large Displacement Optical Flow For Surveillance, Jaiseeli C

Theses and Dissertations

Motion is a significant component of the modern visual experience, aiding with oculomotor control, object recognition, scene interpretation, perceptual organization and the acquisition of 3D shapes. Identifying motion vectors that characterize two-dimensional image transitions, usually from video frames, is necessary to estimate motion.

Optical flow is a motion-tracking technique that estimates the trajectory and velocity of a moving object in a video by shifting each pixel between frames using displacement vectors. This work has two objectives based on small and large displacement optical flow and computes optical flow using Lucas-Kanade and Brox flow, which seem to be superior to other …

The Experiences Of A Black Teacher Educator Surrounded By Whiteness In Teacher Education: A Critical Autoethnography, Lamicah Lindsey Mar 2024

The Experiences Of A Black Teacher Educator Surrounded By Whiteness In Teacher Education: A Critical Autoethnography, Lamicah Lindsey

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The field of teacher education is dominated by whiteness, perpetuating the influence of white ideologies in designing and implementing teacher education at each phase of the continuum (pre-service teaching, in-service teaching, teacher educators). This study employs a critical autoethnographic approach to examine how my experiences as a Black educator have shaped my social justice pedagogy across the teacher education continuum. It also identifies the supports I received during my journey. The findings reveal persistent racial discrimination throughout all phases of teacher education, as well as struggles with imposter syndrome, self-doubt, racial identity, and fear of the unknown. These findings underscore …

Cross-System Strategic Planning: An Exploratory Analysis Of Sequential Intercept Mapping, Timothy Freeman Gerhardt Ii

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Adults with behavioral health issues (BHIs) are disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system (CJS). Local-level system fragmentation perpetuates this disparity. The following studies advance an understanding of the Sequential Intercept Mapping Workshop (SIM-W). The SIM-W is a local-level strategic planning workshop used to address gaps in services, improve local-level partnerships, and co-develop a strategic plan with marginalized groups, county leaders, and cross-system service providers to guide the implementation and delivery of evidence-based jail diversion strategies. Over 300 SIM-Ws have been conducted across the United States, incentivized through state/federal legislation. However, the SIM-W process components and outcomes remain under-explored. Specific …
