Team Psychological Contracts: Effects Of Gender And Social Comparison Orientation, Bonnie S. O'Neill, Martin D. Hassell Apr 2024

Team Psychological Contracts: Effects Of Gender And Social Comparison Orientation, Bonnie S. O'Neill, Martin D. Hassell

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Understanding the psychological contract (PC) perceptions of college students is crucial for attracting and retaining them as early-career employees. We explore how gender and social comparison orientation (SCO) serve as antecedents and moderators of PC breach. Potential PC obligations were examined across 34 teams of full-time business students. Moderated relationships between SCO and gender were examined relative to PC development, breach, and commitment via a survey following a semester-long team project. Results showed that gender significantly influenced obligation perceptions, with females possessing stronger obligations of their team. Positive relationships existed between SCO and the strength of reported obligations and with …

Using Spatial Composition To Influence Player Tension, Canny Yuan Apr 2024

Using Spatial Composition To Influence Player Tension, Canny Yuan

Level Design Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on how space and level geometry in a video game influence a person’s tension. The researcher explored a few potential best practices, which a level designer might utilize when employing spatial composition in video games. By modifying a space's density, size, and openness, a designer can effectively increase or decrease the player’s spatial tension. To explore the effectiveness of the best practices and the related spatial methodology, the researcher recruited playtesters to play the thesis artifact, a customized game level in Dying Light called, “A Way Out.” The researcher then analyzed the heart rates and experiences of …

...to break the rules wisely, you have to know the rules well.

–Le Guin, Steering the Craft

I finished my doctorate in June of 2019. Most of my waking hours that late summer and early fall were spent writing and rewriting cover letters, teaching statements, and research agendas (and equity statements, long CVs, short CVs, etc.)—all the variegated materials demanded from applicants to tenure-track positions in North American law faculties. Writing those materials, and integrating the feedback on early drafts that I received from a host of generous peers and colleagues, became an accidental study in the principal subtext of …

Missing Coercive Control In Family Court Proceedings, Carrie Leonetti Apr 2024

Missing Coercive Control In Family Court Proceedings, Carrie Leonetti

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

In New Zealand, like in the United States, coercive control generally remains outside the purview of the criminal law. It is therefore crucially important that court personnel identify and respond appropriately to coercive control in family law proceedings. Their continued focus on discrete incidents of physical violence between adults conceals the patterned and gendered nature of most [interpersonal violence] in which women are victimized and the patriarchal context of male privilege that continues to dominate heterosexual relationships. The failure to identify coercive control contributes to victims’ entrapment and increases the risk of violence continuing post-separation.

Cases involving coercive control generally …

Materiality In The Long Now: Navigating The Intersection Of Decision-Making, Time, And Strategy, Daniel M. Labovitz, Alexander Kontoleon Apr 2024

Materiality In The Long Now: Navigating The Intersection Of Decision-Making, Time, And Strategy, Daniel M. Labovitz, Alexander Kontoleon

Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)

Existing formulations of materiality in the federal securities laws contain an inherent limitation because they don’t adequately account for how risks and opportunities change over time. This can mislead investors looking to understand how well a company is poised to avoid long-dated risks and take advantage of evolving opportunities because those risks and opportunities don’t neatly fit into the rubric of “likelihood of occurrence times magnitude of harm equals materiality.” This is because the likelihood of any long-dated risk occurring within a short reporting time frame will always approach zero, which means the traditional model of materiality will always classify …

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Social media, one of the most pervasive forms of technology, has been widely studied in relation to the mental health and well-being of individuals. However, the current literature on social media and well-being has provided mixed and inconclusive findings, thus creating a polarizing view of social media. These mixed findings continue to extend into the pandemic, with researchers debating over the effects of social media in the new norms of social isolation. In light of these inconclusive findings, the aim of our meta-analysis was to synthesize previous research data in order to have a holistic understanding of the association between …

Reducing Employee Burnout: The Mediating Role Of Creativity, Salvatore Anthony Leone

Psychology Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Employee burnout represents both a significant financial cost for organizations, and a significant health detriment for society. Scholars estimate that burnout costs the U.S. economy over $125 billion dollars yearly and other researchers attribute over 120,000 worker deaths each year to workplace accidents or medical conditions associated with burnout. The present study explores the role that creativity plays in reducing employee burnout by identifying two highly relevant creativity constructs: creative adaptability and creative process engagement (CPE). A sample of 436 working adults were recruited to respond to two survey batteries separated by a lag of three weeks. The results of …

National Security And Federalizing Data Privacy Infrastructure For Ai Governance, Margaret Hu, Eliott Behar, Davi Ottenheimer

Fordham Law Review

This Essay contends that data infrastructure, when implemented on a national scale, can transform the way we conceptualize artificial intelligence (AI) governance. AI governance is often viewed as necessary for a wide range of strategic goals, including national security. It is widely understood that allowing AI and generative AI to remain self-regulated by the U.S. AI industry poses significant national security risks. Data infrastructure and AI oversight can assist in multiple goals, including: maintaining data privacy and data integrity; increasing cybersecurity; and guarding against information warfare threats. This Essay concludes that conceptualizing data infrastructure as a form of critical infrastructure …

The Impact Of Religiosity On Students’ Experience At The University Of South Dakota, Emmalee J. Bosma

Honors Thesis

College can be a shocking and exciting experience for many young people, but at times can lead to crisis or hardship when they must choose what to believe. Some students may seek out a religious belief in something greater than themselves to quell their longing for meaning while in college, and others may continue the beliefs they have known. This research surveyed students to examine how college students’ level of religiosity influences their academic performance, mental health, sense of purpose and identity, and feelings of belonging and connection at the University of South Dakota (USD). Secondly, through interviewing members of …

Impact Of Environmental Regulation Twitter Sentiment On Market Performance Of Carbon-Intensive Companies, Jessica Tang Apr 2024

Impact Of Environmental Regulation Twitter Sentiment On Market Performance Of Carbon-Intensive Companies, Jessica Tang

Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection

The lack of progress in meeting the goals outlined by the Paris Agreement begs the question of the legislation's true effectiveness and, particularly, if businesses and investors care since they are large contributors toward high carbon emissions. Using Twitter sentiment as a proxy for the degree of care, the relationship between sentiment and the stock performance of Exxon Mobil (representing carbon-intensive companies) versus Johnson and Johnson (representing non-carbon-intensive companies) was analyzed for Paris Agreement-related events. Sentiment and stock price data were collected from the Bloomberg terminal for 5 trading days before and after the signing of the Paris Agreement and …

The Impact Of Culture And Financial Literacy Rates On Investor Behavior, Rishika Pal

Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection

Lo’s Adaptive Market Hypothesis combined the well-known Efficient Market Hypothesis with behavioral finance to state that investors in the market are often rational but certain behaviors (overconfidence, overreaction, loss aversion, etc) cause market volatility (Lo, 2004). As the human species has continued to evolve, differences in learned behavior occurred to eventually became known as culture. Thus, if market movements are an extension of evolution, then how do the differences within culture impact investor behavior? This study explores this question through a literature review concentrated on culture, financial literacy, and behavioral finance as well as a qualitive research methodology with datasets …

The Impact Of Accessibility Information On Purchase Intentions, Reanna Ishmael

Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection

Web accessibility is crucial because it allows people with disabilities and the elderly to access the same digital content as their able-bodied counterparts. Furthermore, firms that pursue web accessibility are poised to gain market share and avoid litigation. However, the growing number of lawsuits suggests that firms are stagnating when it comes to implementing accessibility features. This study explores how firms can communicate their commitment to web accessibility to consumers without disabilities. Prior research has indicated that displaying a web accessibility certification mark has a positive influence on perceptions of a firm’s corporate social responsibility. We extend this research to …

Liking, Linking, And Tweeting: Mental Health, Mentoring, And Professional Responsibility In The Age Of Social Media, Summer Chandler

Journal Articles

It should come as no surprise that interaction through social media and other forms of technology mediated communications ("TMC") has grown dramatically over the last two decades. The Covid-19 pandemic exacerbated this turn to technology. Communicating through some form of technology, rather than face-to-face, necessarily changes the methods we use to communicate (a smile emoji in a text replaces a smile you might give in a face-to-face discussion, for example). Studies support, however, that, in addition to changing the means by which we communicate, our increased reliance on TMC may also be changing us. Among other things, some studies show …

The Medical/Legal/Human Disconnect In Cure Cases: A Proposal For Reform, Thomas C. Galligan Jr. Apr 2024

The Medical/Legal/Human Disconnect In Cure Cases: A Proposal For Reform, Thomas C. Galligan Jr.

Journal Articles

The obligation of a seaman's employer, traditionally the owner of the vessel on which the seaman served, to provide a seaman with cure or medical treatment for injuries or conditions that were either caused by the seaman's service of the ship or that manifested themselves during that service is of ancient origin. The obligation lasts until the seaman attains what the courts call maximum medical improvement, a medical decision, even if further treatment would ease the seaman's pain, prevent relapse, or prevent degeneration of the seaman's condition. Under the traditional rules, if medicine could not fix the seaman's problem, then …

The Fall Of The Female Head Coach In The Post Title Ix Era — Will She Rise Again?, Graeme Blackman

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

In the United States, the percentage of women in leadership positions is rising across nearly all professions, except for women in athletics. While Title IX dramatically increased the number of opportunities for female student-athletes, it was the catalyst behind female coaches' decline in sport. This study aims to explore published studies, current events, and case studies that examine the barriers women face when pursuing coaching as a full-time profession. The main obstacles studied include the unintended consequences of Title IX, current societal and sociological structures, the role of bias in the under-representation of women in leadership positions, the exorbitant cost …
