Sampling Methods And Sample Size In Church-Based Research, David R. Dunaetz Apr 2024

Sampling Methods And Sample Size In Church-Based Research, David R. Dunaetz

Great Commission Research Journal

An underlying assumption of most church-based research is that the sample from which the data is collected is representative of a wider collection of church members, church leaders, small groups, churches, denominations, or whatever is the focus of the study. To increase the likelihood that this assumption is met without making the research an impossible undertaking, various sampling strategies are used ranging from random sampling to convenience sampling, each with advantages and disadvantages. After a sampling strategy is chosen, an appropriate sample size should be pursued, depending on the nature of the study. The sample size of quantitative studies seeking …

The Virginia Academy Of Science: A Scholarly Forum Over Decades For Students Of A Plant Ecologist, Stewart Ware Apr 2024

The Virginia Academy Of Science: A Scholarly Forum Over Decades For Students Of A Plant Ecologist, Stewart Ware

Virginia Journal of Science

As a newcomer to Virginia in 1968, I learned that annual meetings of the Virginia Academy of Science (VAS) were regarded as an excellent place for students to have their first experience giving a talk about their research to fellow scientists, and a place for faculty to get to know other Virginia scientists in their fields. Over the next four decades William and Mary students (undergraduate and graduate) and I were presenters or co-authors of 42 talks or posters at VAS annual meetings, 29 of them based on studies of plant ecology across Virginia. Two were talks by colleagues with …

I Toiled. I Translated. I Was Transformed: How The Struggle With The Dead Language Of The Aeneid Enlightens And Enlivens, Jennifer Coble Apr 2024

I Toiled. I Translated. I Was Transformed: How The Struggle With The Dead Language Of The Aeneid Enlightens And Enlivens, Jennifer Coble

Master of Arts in Classical Studies

The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate that the study of the Aeneid by rhetorical Latin students pursuing a classical Christian education (CCE) both enlightens and enlivens the student. It begins by asserting that Latin has been a particularly important conduit of culture and education since classical antiquity. In the modern era, its study has been largely neglected in preference for the study of modern spoken languages and labeled “dead.” To fulfill the purpose of Latin study within a CCE an appropriate teleios must be identified for Latin students that aligns with the purpose of CCE, namely fluency.

Teacher Professional Education And Student Learning: A Secondary Analysis Of Nationwide Data, Aisha Naz Ansari, Sadia Muzaffar Bhutta, Sohail Ahmad

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

Professional qualification of teachers is widely recognised instrumental for enhancing students’ learning experiences and outcomes. Recently, the introduction of 4-year B.Ed Hons programme was introduced in Pakistan with the intention that it will help in preparing professionally qualified teachers who would not only demonstrate better classroom practices but also contribute to enhancing their students learning. This paper employed a secondary analysis of a nationwide dataset to compare students’ performance who are taught by teachers with B.Ed (Hons), B.Ed, and no professional qualifications. Furthermore, this study also present descriptive comparison of classroom teaching practices of these three types of teachers. The …

Exploring Consent: An Analysis Of Consent In Dark Romance And Contemporary Romance Books, Janeth Hernandez Apr 2024

Exploring Consent: An Analysis Of Consent In Dark Romance And Contemporary Romance Books, Janeth Hernandez

Book Publishing Final Research Papers

This research paper analyzes whether consent is found more frequently in dark romance or contemporary romance books by examining the language used, who speaks the phrases, and the contexts in which they are spoken. This paper explores the dominant sexual script in contemporary romance books and its influence on representations of consent, contrasting this with the absence of such a script in dark romance, which permits more varied incorporations of consent. This analysis was done through content analysis-- word frequency, consent analysis, and thematic coding. Word frequency provided evidence of consent use in the books, while consent analysis and thematic …

Rigor Or Reach? Strictness Or Scope?: The Continuing Battle Over The Parameters Of The Supreme Court’S Daubert/Kumho Reliability/Validation Test For The Admissibility Of Expert Testimony, Edward J. Imwinkelried Apr 2024

Rigor Or Reach? Strictness Or Scope?: The Continuing Battle Over The Parameters Of The Supreme Court’S Daubert/Kumho Reliability/Validation Test For The Admissibility Of Expert Testimony, Edward J. Imwinkelried

Missouri Law Review

Expert testimony is offered at the overwhelming majority of trials conducted in the United States. In many of these cases, it is absolutely essential for the plaintiff or prosecutor to introduce such testimony. The plaintiff may need expert testimony to prove general causation in a toxic Tort case, and similarly the prosecutor may need to resort to expert testimony to establish the accused’s identity as the perpetrator of the charged crime. For decades, the proponents of expert testimony have mounted campaigns to lower the evidentiary barriers to expert testimony. For most of the 20th century, the governing American test for …

The Use Of Figurative Suicidal Language By College Students And Its Impact On Mental Health And Suicide Stigma, Makayla Hooker

Senior Theses

Using suicidal language as a hyperbole in everyday conversation has become common for college students experiencing stress. Previous research analyzed use of suicidal language on social media with the intention of finding the best way to provide help to the individuals expressing true suicidal ideation on social media but found that many people do not literally mean what they are saying when they use suicidal language. It was hypothesized that the frequency with which individuals use suicidal statements figuratively as well as the frequency with which they hear others use these statements would negatively correlate with the level of seriousness …

Analyzing the narratives provides insight into the variability of MS types and symptoms, and various coping mechanisms. It supports the idea that each participant should …

How Changing Majors Impacts Academic Performance Among Undergraduate Students, Min Xu, Chandra R. De Silva Apr 2024

How Changing Majors Impacts Academic Performance Among Undergraduate Students, Min Xu, Chandra R. De Silva

History Faculty Publications

This study investigates changing majors among undergraduate students. Through retrospectively tracking five graduating classes at a regional research university, the study provides empirical evidence as to when students declare their major, reach their final decisions about a major, and explores when it would be too late to change a major in order to graduate in a timely fashion. The study also examines the relationship between changing majors and academic performance. The results which suggest the need to provide students, especially freshmen with early proactive assistance in major selection might address concerns of parents and students about choosing a college major …

The Bloodless Period: A Transfeminine Experience, Rin Nguyen Apr 2024

The Bloodless Period: A Transfeminine Experience, Rin Nguyen

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

There is limited research exploring menstruation in transgender and gender diverse (TGD) populations, and studies have primarily examined the relationship between menstruation and gender congruence. Findings revealed menstruating TGD people experienced distress related to decreased gender congruence (Eisenberg et al., 2021), and 88% of TGD people expressed interest in menstrual suppression to manage the distress (Schwartz et al., 2022). By contrast, Lowik (2020) highlighted a transfeminine person who wished to menstruate to achieve womanhood and commented on the “bloodless period” (i.e., menstrual-like symptoms in the absence of bleeding) upon receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy. To the author’s knowledge, there is no …

Between Pages And Politics: An Interdisciplinary Exploration Of Book Bans, Hannah Morrison Apr 2024

Between Pages And Politics: An Interdisciplinary Exploration Of Book Bans, Hannah Morrison

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Across the United States, school boards are being inundated with requests to ban books. While these conversations are often localized, what the rise in censorship across the country suggests is that there is a fierce movement behind censoring young adult literature. What is frequently erased in these campaigns are stories of people of color and queer communities, alongside topics such as sexuality, drugs, or violence. The presiding conclusion within childhood studies on how we have reached a point where censorship is abundantly common in American schools is that public discourse views children as less than or not fully formed, thus …

Characterizing And Developing Chemistry Students’ Data Analysis And Interpretation Of Chemical Data, Stephanie A. Berg Apr 2024

Characterizing And Developing Chemistry Students’ Data Analysis And Interpretation Of Chemical Data, Stephanie A. Berg

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

All chemistry students must develop competency in analyzing and making sense of data. However, there are many difficulties that chemistry students may experience while analyzing data. Many students may not use relevant prior knowledge to aid in making sense of data, or they may not form conclusions using all the data provided. Additionally, prior knowledge seems to influence one’s data analysis, but little is known about how students use it to make sense of data. Thus, I interviewed undergraduate students as they analyzed graphical data for a task and characterized how they used their prior knowledge throughout. My findings suggest …

"It's Profound To Be Understood": Negotiations Of Household Labor In Trans Families, Eliza Thor Apr 2024

"It's Profound To Be Understood": Negotiations Of Household Labor In Trans Families, Eliza Thor

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

The gendered division of household labor has long been of interest to family scholars. For heterosexual couples, labor is often unequally divided, with women normatively taking on more labor than their partners. This inequality is often justified through time availability, resource dependency, and gender ideology. However, less studied is the division of household labor in relationships in which at least one partner is transgender or gender diverse (TGD). Drawing on the framework of “doing gender,” I explore how performing labor that aligns with traditional gender expectations affirms the gender identities of TGD individuals, making the division of labor in the …

Perceptions Of College Campus Climate Among Queer Female Sexual Assault Survivors, Elyxcus J. Anaya Apr 2024

Perceptions Of College Campus Climate Among Queer Female Sexual Assault Survivors, Elyxcus J. Anaya

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

One-fifth of women in the United States report at least one lifetime experience of rape (Black et al., 2011; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2014; Smith et al., 2018). Sexual assault (SA)is a common experience among cisgender women college students, with 20% reporting experiencing a rape during their time in college (Cullen et al., 2000). Universities generally have resources designed to help survivors of SA, though research suggests many of these resources are underutilized by survivors. The current study was guided by social constructivism and used a transcendental phenomenology approach to explore six queer, female participants’ decision-making processes about …

Teacher Roles In Correction: Understanding Disciplinary Alternative School Programs In Nebraska, Philip Thomas White Iii Apr 2024

Teacher Roles In Correction: Understanding Disciplinary Alternative School Programs In Nebraska, Philip Thomas White Iii

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Through semi-structured interviews with teachers and semi-structured interviews-turned-testimonios of students, I have sought to understand the purposes and consequences of Disciplinary Alternative Programs (DAP). Four different locations from across the state of Nebraska were utilized with 16 teachers and two students participating. Research questions considered the purpose of DAPs to better understand how these programs fit into broader systems of schooling. While highly cautious IRB oversight limited the number of students who could be participants in this study, their insights were substantially augmented by the sixteen educators from such environments who were also interviewed. Participant responses offered nuanced and …

Constructing Refugee Identity: A Heuristic Inquiry Into Experiences Of Ukrainian Refugees, Deana Tsabak Apr 2024

Constructing Refugee Identity: A Heuristic Inquiry Into Experiences Of Ukrainian Refugees, Deana Tsabak

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Besides the despicable atrocities and devastation, Russia’s war in Ukraine caused the emergence of a group of refugees previously unknown in the U.S. and the world. The phenomenon of “Ukrainian refugees” is new to the immigration and resettlement agencies, host communities, employers, and educators. This research explores how five Ukrainians who left their homeland after the beginning of Russia’s war construct their refugee identity in the United States. Furthermore, this study aims to discover in what ways learning English in the English Language Learning (ELL) program at a community college in Nebraska influences refugee identity construction in resettlement.

This study …

A Collaborative Campus Community Policing Model: A Case Study In Fostering Collective Efficacy Among Students, Faculty And Staff, Hassan Ramzah

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

This qualitative, single case study explored whether and how a campus police agency’s community policing model fostered collective efficacy among students, faculty, staff members and campus police. Using Bandura’s (2000) collective efficacy theory, this study was guided by the following questions: (1) How does a campus police department use a community policing model to build partnerships with students, faculty, and staff? (2) How do police officers, students, faculty, and staff perceive these partnership-building efforts, particularly as it relates to fostering collective efficacy within the campus community? (3) Through what processes have campus police partnerships with students, faculty, and staff contributed …

Tuning Out: Intersections Of Music And Literature In The Contemporary French-Language Novel, Alexander James Claussen Apr 2024

Tuning Out: Intersections Of Music And Literature In The Contemporary French-Language Novel, Alexander James Claussen

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The past thirty years have seen a shift in French-language novels as authors move from the self-reflexive formal experimentation of the nouveau roman and its successors toward a literature that is again concerned with plot, character, and above all, the problems of the contemporary world. This “retour au récit” is accompanied by a resurgence of interest in writing the self (through experiments in autofiction), the past (through explorations of collective memory and collective guilt), and the present (through novels that challenge existing social structures and seek to define and develop new collective or national identities).

This dissertation examines the (re)turn …

Separately Measuring Home-Field Advantage For Offenses And Defenses: A Panel-Data Study Of Constituent Channels Within Collegiate American Football, Matthew J. Mcmahon, Sarah Marx Quintanar

Economics & Finance Faculty Publications

We improve constituent-channel estimates of home-field and neutral-site advantage for collegiate American football's top division by utilizing a richer, 12-season data set and by exploiting the COVID-19 pandemic as a random shock. Novel to the literature, we separately examine points scored by each team, allowing us to identify impacts on each team's offense and defense individually. The information set provided by our model is a strict superset of that provided by the previous standard in the literature, making ours a strictly dominant modeling choice. We demonstrate this improvement theoretically and empirically. Physiologically, away-team travel distance does not impact their own …

A Phenomenological Investigation Into The Lived Experiences Of Service Dog Utilizing Undergraduate Students, Shay Barrett Apr 2024

A Phenomenological Investigation Into The Lived Experiences Of Service Dog Utilizing Undergraduate Students, Shay Barrett

Honors Theses

The transition from high school to college can be a difficult time for students. Utilizing a service dog can make that experience more complex (Hadley, 2018). College is an important time in a young adult’s life as they develop independence and their identity (Chickering, 1969). This study recognizes the role that universities and colleges play in the development of students who utilize service dogs, as such the purpose of this study was to investigate the experiences of service dog utilizing undergraduate students who attend in-person classes on campus at Texas A&M University-Commerce (TAMUC) and to examine how these experiences have …
