Making Time: Boredom And The Infrastructure Of Modernity, Zachariah Michielli Apr 2024

Making Time: Boredom And The Infrastructure Of Modernity, Zachariah Michielli

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The following dissertation is a project of infrastructure history. This project chiefly focuses on human-constructed time and boredom in the Western world. The Western world has worked collectively to control time for thousands of years. In the pre-modern era, time was primarily monitored using the Sun’s path across the sky. In that period, evidence demonstrates that time was a passive regulator known primarily through the movement of celestial bodies. The orbit of the Moon around the Earth generated the month, which could be measured in multiple ways. Months aided in counting the periods for the seasons and for the harvest. …

From Distraction To Interaction: Leveraging Robot-Driven Interplay For Effective Technical Education Amid Interruptions, Emmanuel Toks Adéníran

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the dynamic interplay between robotics and human adaptability in environments characterized by frequent interruptions, with a special focus on technical education and privacy considerations. Our research begins by examining the pervasive issue of interruptions in various settings, emphasizing their impact on productivity and safety. It then explores strategies that leverage technology, particularly robotics, to enhance human interruption tolerance and performance. A significant portion of the research is dedicated to understanding how robotics can aid individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). This exploration is extended to broader educational contexts, where robotics are employed to improve learning outcomes and …

The Death Of The American Dream, En Español: The Problem Of Latine Homeownership In The Late Twentieth Century, Gabriel Aron Ramirez Apr 2024

The Death Of The American Dream, En Español: The Problem Of Latine Homeownership In The Late Twentieth Century, Gabriel Aron Ramirez

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation examines trends in Latine homeownership between 1970 and 2000. It describes how Latines became homeowners in the absence of targeted subsidy programs. In so doing, it tracks fundamental changes in housing markets and housing policy as the New Deal order crumbled and the so-called neoliberal order arose. The dissertation comprises three parts. Part One narrates the federal government’s retreat from fair housing in the 1970s at the same time that executive agencies “discovered” the dire housing conditions faced by Latines across the country. Part Two describes how Latine-led nonprofit organizations, particularly the National Council of La Raza, responded …

Exploring Function And Mechanism Through Intuitions, Explanations, & Learning, Amanda Mccarthy Apr 2024

Exploring Function And Mechanism Through Intuitions, Explanations, & Learning, Amanda Mccarthy

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Imagine learning about a car engine for the first time. You might expect that the person explaining to you how a car engine works would first explain the role that the car engine has within the car (functional information) before diving into how the camshaft, pistons, spark plugs, cylinders, and crankshaft all work together to make the car engine work (mechanistic information). Where might this intuition that functional information should come before mechanistic information come from? Is mechanistic information too convoluted to be understood without function as a cognitive scaffold? This thesis considers the strength of this intuition of explanatory …

Identifying The Multilevel Factors Influencing Provider Recommendations For Adolescent Vaccines, Mallory Kathryn Ellingson Apr 2024

Identifying The Multilevel Factors Influencing Provider Recommendations For Adolescent Vaccines, Mallory Kathryn Ellingson

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Health care provider (HCP) recommendations are a key predictor of vaccineacceptance among parents of adolescents. However, HCP recommendations for adolescent vaccines are not universal. In order to address disparities in HCP recommendations, we must first understand why recommendations vary. The factors that influence a HCP recommendation are multilevel. At the individual level, a HCP’s own knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about a vaccine can influence how or if they recommend the vaccine to a patient. At the interpersonal level, the characteristics of the patient can impact how a HCP perceives disease risk or need for a vaccine in their patient. At …

Matching Missions To Means: Targeted Resource Allocation In The Non-Profit Sector, Akshaya Suresh Apr 2024

Matching Missions To Means: Targeted Resource Allocation In The Non-Profit Sector, Akshaya Suresh

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the challenge of optimizing resource allocation in the non-profit sector. Non-profit organizations have to make real-time decisions that are not only efficient but also equitable. In many cases, new analytic approaches could allow for better informed, data-driven decision-making. Yet, despite their critical role, these organizations often lack the capacity to tap into these tools to increase their impact. This research attempts to bridge this gap through two applications: the identification of students with reading disabilities and the matching of volunteers to organizations. Chapter 2 critiques the current process for diagnosing reading disabilities among students, highlighting the inefficiencies …

Some Bonuses Are Bigger Than Others? Benchmark-Beating Pressure And The Gender Pay Gap, Lucas Chihuan Lee Apr 2024

Some Bonuses Are Bigger Than Others? Benchmark-Beating Pressure And The Gender Pay Gap, Lucas Chihuan Lee

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This essay presents evidence of the gendered effect of firm financial pressures on compensation. For identification, I examine the relation between the gender pay gap and managers’ pressure to meet earnings expectations (i.e., benchmark-beating pressure). Using UK subsidiary-level data for the 2017–2021 period, I find that the gender difference in bonuses increases by 4.23 percentage points in firms that meet or just beat analyst forecasts, compared to firms that miss or comfortably beat analyst expectations, even after controlling for job roles. This suggests that benchmark-beating pressure exacerbates the gender pay gap, consistent with research indicating that women are less likely …

Character In Conflict: Soldiers And Eighteenth-Century English Literary Character, Adam C. Keller Apr 2024

Character In Conflict: Soldiers And Eighteenth-Century English Literary Character, Adam C. Keller

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

“Character in Conflict” explores the function of the soldier as a literary character in multiple genres of literature across the long eighteenth century. It constructs a series of literary case studies drawn from multiple genres, supplemented at times by soldier memoirs, drill manuals, political pamphlets, and other historical materials, to argue that soldiers make an ideal test case for literary characterization. To that end, this project examines soldier-characters that appear in Theophrastan character books, early eighteenth-century comedy, and the mid eighteenth-century novel. “Character in Conflict” uses these character case studies to explore the transhistorical properties of martial form and situates …

Resting-State Functional Connectivity Correlates Of Inhibitory Control Over Emotional Stimuli, Makayla Mattson Apr 2024

Resting-State Functional Connectivity Correlates Of Inhibitory Control Over Emotional Stimuli, Makayla Mattson

All NMU Master's Theses

Inhibitory control is defined as the stopping or overriding of a mental process with or without intention. It is known as a motor process in which executive control suppresses an automated motor response. Currently, there is no existing research discussing the neural mechanisms of an emotional anti-saccade task, therefore with the use of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and an emotional anti-saccade task, this study aims to identify the neural correlates of inhibitory control over emotional stimuli. The anti-saccade task is known as an effective measure of inhibitory control since it requires inhibiting a reflexive response and re-orienting attention …

Shall We Place More Advanced Students In A Separate Class?, Shahnaz Shahbazova, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2024

Shall We Place More Advanced Students In A Separate Class?, Shahnaz Shahbazova, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In every class, we have students who are more advanced and students who are more behind. From this viewpoint, it seems reasonable to place more advanced students in a separate class. This should help advanced students progress faster, and it should help other students as well, since the teachers in the remaining class can better attend to their needs. However, empirically, this does not work: when we form a separate class, the overall amount of gained knowledge decreases. In this paper, we provide a possible explanation for this seemingly counterintuitive phenomenon.

An Introduction To The Yanomami Humanitarian Crisis And An Interview With Carlos Messiass On Contemporary Brazilian Indigenous Issues, Ethan Mccullough

Four Valleys Archive Scholarship

The following document covers how the rise of Jair Bolsonaro, based around a coalition of expansionist cattle ranchers and extractive industry representatives, has led to the massive explosion of illegal gold mining within the Yanomami in the Amazon. This increase in mining has led to a rapid increase of malnutrition, malaria, and mercury poisoning within the Yanomami population, as well as a significant rise in violence and human rights abuses. Other topics covered include, the previous increase of illegal mining on Yanomami land in the 1980s, Bolsonaro's anti-Indigenous rhetoric while campaigning for presidency, the role of the U.S. in Operation …

The Legality Of Second Chances: Employment For The Formerly Incarcerated, Ella Paligo Apr 2024

The Legality Of Second Chances: Employment For The Formerly Incarcerated, Ella Paligo

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

The United States has one of the highest incarceration and recidivism rates globally. This is largely attributed to the fact that a large number of employers reserve the right to not hire those with a criminal record. To combat this, cities and states have enacted “Ban the Box” legislation which prohibits employers from inquiring about criminal history before the interview round. However, with this decision being left up to local and state officials, marginalized individuals are left open to employment discrimination. This paper explores how federal protection, like “Ban the Box” laws, must be implemented to avoid recidivism and reimprisonment.

Occupational Therapy's Role In Supporting Mothers With Breastfeeding, Courtney Kessler Apr 2024

Occupational Therapy's Role In Supporting Mothers With Breastfeeding, Courtney Kessler

MOT Student Capstones

Breastfeeding and post-partum mental health can impact the bond and quality of life for mothers, especially first-time mothers and their infants. As mothers try to juggle the occupation of breastfeeding, it can become very overwhelming with the role of parenting. Transitioning from hospital to home reduces the amount of direct support and direct access to instruction on breastfeeding and maternal well postpartum. This creates a need for an occupational therapy based breastfeeding wellness program. An occupational therapy based breastfeeding wellness program will be beneficial as it will be client-centered with a focus on quality of life. To combat the issue …

Visual-Mobility: Occupational Therapy's Role In Promoting Aging In Place Among Older Adult Conditions, Jody Shivey Apr 2024

Visual-Mobility: Occupational Therapy's Role In Promoting Aging In Place Among Older Adult Conditions, Jody Shivey

MOT Student Capstones

While the number of aging individuals continues to grow in the U.S., the presence of chronic conditions often minimizes the opportunity to age in place. Moreover, age-related eye disorders inhibit one's access to the environment and participation in valued occupations, leading to a greater risk of falling and being displaced from the home. Despite an older adult's preference to remain in the home, lack of accommodation reduces the potential to do so. As such, an individualized approach to aging in place can be achieved through an occupational therapy practitioner and client partnership, facilitating the use of modifications and adaptations. This …
