Inequities In Chronic Stress Exposure At The Intersection Of Race, Gender, And Sexual Identity In A Nationally Representative Sample Of U.S. Adults, Jordan M. Lancaster, Efrain H. Chavez Martinez Apr 2024

Inequities In Chronic Stress Exposure At The Intersection Of Race, Gender, And Sexual Identity In A Nationally Representative Sample Of U.S. Adults, Jordan M. Lancaster, Efrain H. Chavez Martinez

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Annual Conference

Background

Social inequity rooted in systemic oppression is robustly associated with mental and physical health; chronic stress is highlighted as a key mechanism. Limited research examining the association between sexual identity alone and C-reactive protein (CRP) – an upstream biological marker of chronic stress exposure – has yielded mixed results.

Purpose

To examine whether race/ethnicity, gender, and sexual identity interact to produce unequal levels of CRP.

Methods

Using cross-sectional data from the 2003-2010 waves of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we examined intersectional (self-reported race*gender*sexual identity) patterns in log-transformed CRP levels using a multivariable linear model among 10,885 …

The Association Between Acculturation & C-Reactive Protein In U.S. Immigrants: A Cross-Sectional Study, Jessica Kilinski Bs, Rosol Mikail Bs, Kelly M. Reavis Phd, Mph, Deborah Karasek Phd, Mph

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Annual Conference

Purpose: Immigrants undergo acculturation as they assimilate to a different culture, potentially leading to immense stress. Our objective was to examine the association between acculturation and C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of stress-induced inflammation. We hypothesized that U.S. foreign-born adults 20 years and older with higher degrees of acculturation would have higher CRP levels compared to those with lower acculturation.

Method: We used 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 1526 participants to conduct a cross-sectional analysis. We measured acculturation as language spoken at home (categorized as low, moderate, and high) and examined its association with CRP …

Non-Parametric Cd-Cat Item Selection Strategy And Termination Rules Based On Binary Search Algorithm, Junjie Li, Huijing Zheng Apr 2024

Non-Parametric Cd-Cat Item Selection Strategy And Termination Rules Based On Binary Search Algorithm, Junjie Li, Huijing Zheng

Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation | 教育测量与评估双语期刊

CD-CAT plays a significant role in diagnosing and assessing students, contributing significantly to improving teaching effectiveness. However, in classroom teaching scenarios, unlike large-scale assessments where a large number of samples can be used to accurately estimate item parameters, non-parametric CD-CAT becomes the only feasible choice. Compared to parametric CD-CAT, non-parametric CD-CAT started later, and research mainly focuses on non-parametric item selection strategies. However, the existing non-parametric item selection strategies have the disadvantage of low efficiency, and there is little research on non-parametric termination rules. Therefore, this study proposes two more efficient item selection strategies: Non-Parametric Dynamic Binary Search (NDBS) and …

A Line Of Matriarchs, Ron Bruner, Dudley Chancey

Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry

Although shared practices are central to religious socialization, relationships empower such sharing. Familial relationships are the most durable and effective of such relationships, even when family form varies. Though many ethnic and faith groups tend to emphasize patriarchal leadership within congregations and families, in fact, matriarchs serve as the spiritual anchors for succeeding generations in a surprising number of three (and more) generation families. Data supporting this assertion are a part of the results of the Three Generations Project, a study of faith families within Churches of Christ.

Bodies Of Evidence: The Criminalization Of Abortion And Surveillance Of Women In A Post-Dobbs World, Jolynn Dellinger, Stephanie Pell Apr 2024

Bodies Of Evidence: The Criminalization Of Abortion And Surveillance Of Women In A Post-Dobbs World, Jolynn Dellinger, Stephanie Pell

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy

In the wake of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, state laws criminalizing abortion raise concerns about the investigation and prosecution of women seeking reproductive health care and about the surveillance such investigations will entail. The criminalization of abortion is not new, and the investigation of abortion crimes has always involved the surveillance of women. However, state statutes criminalizing abortion coupled with surveillance methods and technologies that did not exist pre-Roe present new and complex challenges surrounding the protection of women's privacy and liberty interests—in addition to the interests of those who may provide or help pregnant people obtain reproductive …

The Adult Rights-Bearing Archetype And How It Stifles Young People's Equal Protection, Catherine E. Smith Apr 2024

The Adult Rights-Bearing Archetype And How It Stifles Young People's Equal Protection, Catherine E. Smith

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy

American constitutional law is defined by a rights-bearing archetype that prioritizes adults—and the Equal Protection Clause is no exception. The Supreme Court has recognized children as constitutional persons and proclaimed that "neither the Fourteenth Amendment nor the Bill of Rights is for adults alone," but courts mostly see autonomous, rational, individualistic, income-generating grown people as rights-bearers. For the first time, this article reveals six adult-rights-bearing analytical traps that limit children's equal protection, and proposes jettisoning the rigid Carolene Products test in favor of a nascent youth-based framework. Instead of shoehorning children's rights into a web of laws and principles designed …

Overlooked Psychometrics: An Examination Of The Construct Validity Of The Level Of Service/Case Management Inventory (Ls/Cmi), Agnieszka M. Nogalska

Student Theses

Construct validity is an important and under-examined source of evidence contributing to the psychometric properties of risk assessment instruments. This study assessed the construct and predictive validities of the LS/CMI examining a sample of 95 incarcerated male participants in the Northeastern United States. Results support a two-factor structure for the instrument, with the Criminal History, Education/Employment, Procriminal Attitude, and Antisocial Pattern subscales demonstrating convergence with other well-validated measures of these constructs. The results further suggest relatively weak discriminative ability for predicting recidivism (AUC = 0.67). Further research examining and integrating the construct and predictive validity of the LS/CMI specifically is …

Unconscious Integration Of Categorical Relationship Of Two Subliminal Numbers In Comparison With “5”, Changjun Li, Qingying Liu, Yingjuan Liu, Jerwen Jou, Shen Tu

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

Many studies have shown that the brain can process subliminal numerals, i.e., participants can categorize a subliminal number into two categories: greater than 5 or less than 5. In the context of many studies on the unconscious integration of multiple subliminal stimuli, the issue of whether multiple subliminal numbers can be integrated is contentious. The same-different task is regarded as a perfect tool to explore unconscious integration. In the two experiments reported, we used a same-different task in which a pair of masked prime numbers was followed by a pair of target numbers, and participants were asked to decide whether …
