Evidence-Based Programs For System-Involved Youths, Karli Baalmann, April Terry Apr 2024

Evidence-Based Programs For System-Involved Youths, Karli Baalmann, April Terry

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Far too many juveniles are incarcerated in juvenile correctional facilities, and in some cases, waived into the adult criminal legal system. Life course theory helps explain this pathway as many of these youth grow up in poverty-stricken environments, with restricted access and poor quality of schooling, during which they may experience abuse and neglect, leading them into the school-to-prison pipeline. Likewise, youth experiencing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)—forms of abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction—endure the additional abuse-to-prison pipeline. Once incarcerated, these youth experience reentry issues when attempting to successfully transition back into their homes and communities. However, this issue starts before …

Heart failure (HF) is a major health concern. External evidence supports the use of the teach-back method for patient education to promote self-care behaviors in patients with HF which may also reduce rehospitalizations. Patients with HF at one home health agency in New England participated in the quality improvement project which consisted of delivering 20 minute weekly standardized teach-back educational sessions covering topics of HF self-care over six weeks. The existing patient education materials and two new resources, Medication Tracker and Self-Check Plan for HF management, were reviewed. Three questions from the Self-Care of Heart Failure Index were asked during …

Load Reduction Leadership: A Cognitive Load Theory-Based Framework Differentiating Performance Patterns In Nyc Schools, Kristopher C. Bertoglio Apr 2024

Load Reduction Leadership: A Cognitive Load Theory-Based Framework Differentiating Performance Patterns In Nyc Schools, Kristopher C. Bertoglio

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation applies cognitive load theory to teacher working conditions in New York City. To connect small-scale cognitive processes with perennial organization-level effects, the theoretical components of this paper develop a novel framework. Load reduction leadership (LRL) illuminates how day-to-day school operations impact staff members’ cognition and school-level student performance. LRL extrapolates various cognitive load phenomena to schools’ complexities and time scales. Eight longitudinal case studies were found through New York State summative exam data. Schools were selected based on their abilities to over- and under-perform at improving their students’ proficiency, including schools that changed from under- to over-performance and …

Who’S Laughing Now? Comedy As Coping Mechanism And Critique In Paul Beatty’S The Sellout, Mihaughany Redd

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper examines the ways in which Paul Beatty uses dark humor as a coping mechanism for racial trauma, as well as a way of critiquing society’s treatment of Black people in his novel, The Sellout. Throughout his novel, Beatty discusses various controversial topics such as police brutality, segregation, and slavery. Although these topics are not lighthearted in any sense, Beatty uses satire and comedy to describe them to the reader. This paper seeks to elucidate why Beatty would use comedy to discuss the racial injustices and inequalities that Black people have faced in the past and in the …

See The Tears And Hear The Tales: Ancient Lessons From The Odyssey To Address Timeless Human Needs For Recovery, Aimee M. Smith

Master of Arts in Classical Studies

The ancient text of the Odyssey reveals a timeless truth that remains significant in modern days: people need to be seen and heard in order to recover from life’s difficulties. Scholarship from literary trauma theorists during the past several decades has provided insights into the recovery process from traumatic experiences. Combat trauma theory, in particular, has provided a foundation for analysis of the ancient Greek epics for exploration of the universality of the experience of human trauma and suffering. Through analysis of the nostos or homecoming process of Odysseus, the reader recognizes the importance of offering opportunity through xenia of …

Teaching Creatives To Be A.I. Provocateurs: Establishing A Digital Humanist Approach For Generative A.I. In The Classroom, Joshua A. Fisher

Tradition Innovations in Arts, Design, and Media Higher Education

This case study examines the implementation of OpenAI's Generative AI (GenAI) in a graduate interactive storytelling course at Ball State University in Spring '23. Adopting a Posthumanist perspective, the course treated GenAI as a synthetic collaborator to bridge technical disparities among the students, enhancing their characters, dialogue, and visual production. Students also used the tool to help understand complex technical documentation. However, while the approach led to overall success, the case study proposes a shift towards Digital Humanism for a more balanced, ethical integration of GenAI in the classroom. This perspective prioritizes human creative agency over computational creativity, encouraging students …

“The Spirit And Power": Max Weber And The Study Of Prophecy And Authority In The First Three Centuries Of The Church, Coleman S. Kimbrough

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

Originally written as a research essay for Dr. Charles Bobertz's Patristics course in the Spring term of 2023, this paper examines the role that prophecy played in the early Church, especially in the Montanist movement of the late second and early third centuries. However, the paper takes prophecy and its authoritative role in the early Church as a springboard to reflect on the study of the early Church from an academic perspective, probing the ways in which twentieth-century scholarship utilized the sociological theory of Max Weber to make sense of the gradual "institutionalization" of the Church from its more charismatic …

Mind The Time: A Synthesis Of Pedagogical Approaches For Improving Rhythm And Meter For Instrumentalists As Applied To Bassoon, Annalea Milligan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Rhythm is imperative for the performing musician. This project aims to provide bassoonists with a resource for a rhythmic or metric-focused approach to their applied study. Pedagogical resources for improving rhythm in music through the lens of four categories are identified: experiential, pattern and phrasing, mapping, and repetition. Exercises created from a synthesis of each pedagogical approach demonstrate possible application to bassoon literature by exploring the ways in which an intentional awareness of rhythm can improve technical playing and build practice and performance confidence. By emphasizing the importance of rhythm, its components, and the various approaches to teaching and understanding …

The immune system substantially influences age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression, affected by genetic and environmental factors. In a Mayo Clinic Study of Aging cohort, we examined how risk factors like APOE genotype, age, and sex affect inflammatory molecules and AD biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Among cognitively unimpaired individuals over 65 (

Simply Snake Sprites And Sounds: Snake Detection Theory In Video Games, Entropy Cramer Apr 2024

Simply Snake Sprites And Sounds: Snake Detection Theory In Video Games, Entropy Cramer

Scholars Week

Snake Detection Theory states that there is an innate evolutionary advantage to respond to snake stimuli stronger and faster than non-snake stimuli. This theory has been supported by studies measuring brain activity in infants looking at images of snakes (Bertels et al., 2020), reactions in wild monkeys and marmosets (Wombolt & Caine, 2016; Isbell & Etings, 2017; Van Strien et al, 2016; Dinh et al., 2021), and in peripheral attention tasks in adults (Kawai & He, 2016; Kawai & Qui, 2020; Gallup & Meyers, 2021). Also, over 53% of UK citizens report anxiety around snakes, and it is one of …

Gender Affirming Surgery And Pain In Adolescents: Teen And Parent Experiences, Corrin Murphy, Eleanor Battison, University Of Rhode Island, Anna Wilson Phd

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Annual Conference

Background: Adolescents seeking gender affirming medical care face unique biopsychosocial challenges, including experiences of discrimination and stigma. Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) adolescents often undergo gender affirming surgery (GAS). While there is an increase in GAS for TGD adolescents in the U.S., little is known about the pain experiences in the post-surgical period among these youth. There have been no studies to our knowledge that examine the psychological functioning of parents and their ability to handle their child's distress, which may be affected by their child's post-GAS pain experiences. Parental responses to their children’s pain and distress may, in turn, …

Impact Of Two Shift Schedules On Post-Shift Blood Pressure In Firefighters, Ayeisha H. Haswarey Apr 2024

Impact Of Two Shift Schedules On Post-Shift Blood Pressure In Firefighters, Ayeisha H. Haswarey

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Annual Conference

Background: Firefighters have an increased risk of cardiometabolic disease compared to the general population. Blunted blood pressure (BP) dipping during nocturnal sleep is associated with increased cardiometabolic disease morbidity/mortality. Shift work can alter diurnal BP oscillation, but the extent of alteration by different schedules remains debated. No study to date has examined firefighting shift schedules, necessitating a longitudinal evaluation to begin to understand their implications for cardiometabolic health. Thus, this preliminary analysis compares how two common schedules (24/48 hours on/off vs. 1/3/2/3 days on/off) impact post-shift BP and dipping in 20 firefighters.

Methods: 20 participants (10% female; 25-54 years of …

Exploring Decolonial And Indigenous Mental Health Framework And Practice To Address Complex Trauma Among Palestinian Youth Living Under Violence Of Settler-Colonialism, Vivian L. Duong, Corrin Murphy

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Annual Conference

The growing settler colonial project of Israel forced indigenous Palestinians to flee from their homeland to further the Zionist movement of establishing a Jewish-majority state. The forced dispossession and displacement of Palestinians at this time was referred to as the Nakba, or catastrophe (Masalha, 2002). From 1947 and 1949, approximately 750,000 Palestinians from a population of 1.9 million were made refugees (Al Jazeera, 2017). Also referred to as the ethnic cleansing of Palestine, Zionists forcibly took over 78 percent of Palestine, destroyed about 530 villages and cities, and killed around 15,000 Palestinians including more than 70 massacres (Al Jazeera, 2017). …
