Psychology: Music Genre And Film Perception, Emily Cloud, Patrick Santorum, Raygan Robertson, Hannah Johnson Apr 2024

Psychology: Music Genre And Film Perception, Emily Cloud, Patrick Santorum, Raygan Robertson, Hannah Johnson

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

Existing research indicates that music can alter the visual perception of emotion, such as negative moods followed sad music and positive moods followed happy music (Jolij & Meurs, 2011). Furthermore, different genres of music over film have an impact on the perception of the viewer, specifically attention level (Y. Kwon et al., 2022) and likeability or connection of film characters (Hoeckner, B et al., 2011). While evidence has shown that there are physiological effects of different genres of music (i.e. rock, jazz, classical) (K. Whiteford et al. 2018) (Grewe, O. et al, 2007), there is a gap in the literature …

Rebuilding Lives: Exploring The Advantages Of Occupational Therapy In A Community-Based Resource Center For Homeless Veterans, Melanie Clampitt

MOT Student Capstones

Current research demonstrates that homeless veterans continue to face unmet needs through ineffective government programs. Although community-based veterans resource centers have been established to address these gaps, they are often overwhelmed by the number of homeless veterans seeking assistance. The occupational therapy (OT) profession is uniquely positioned to address these challenges by utilizing interventions that enhance occupational performance and participation, 3 improving homeless veterans' overall quality of life. However, these programs are frequently overlooked due to a need for more awareness among resource center staff and community stakeholders regarding the benefits of OT. An extensive review of scholarly articles was …

Being Good For Something: The Intersection Of Care And Critical Theories (Chapter 7), Carolyne Ali-Khan, Hope E. Wilson Apr 2024

Being Good For Something: The Intersection Of Care And Critical Theories (Chapter 7), Carolyne Ali-Khan, Hope E. Wilson

Education: Faculty Publications

Miles Horton (1990) differentiates being good from being good for something. Being good for something requires an understanding of place, power, and agency. It also requires being deeply and fully present. Working for and with Jeffrey Cornett was an experience in learning how to be good for something and simultaneously learning how to collectively bring active care into a department, college, and the broader world. In this chapter we discuss Jeff’s commitment to both. We examine how Jeff forged the intersection of care and critical theories. And we share a few examples of moments in which Jeff built community

The Evaluation Of Non-Specific Risk Indicators In Improving Detection Of Psychosis-Spectrum Liability, Thomas W. O'Kane Apr 2024

The Evaluation Of Non-Specific Risk Indicators In Improving Detection Of Psychosis-Spectrum Liability, Thomas W. O'Kane

Theses and Dissertations

Psychosis-spectrum disorders remain a leading cause of disability for both individuals and society, with early identification and prevention efforts representing a promising avenue of research for addressing these concerns. One potential impediment to improving early risk identification is the historical focus on indicators thought to be exclusive to the psychosis-spectrum. This focus often comes at the expense of non-specific risk factors (e.g., disrupted sleep, adverse childhood experiences) which contribute to the risk of developing psychosis as well as other mental illnesses. Research suggests the inclusion of these non-specific factors may improve our ability to identify those at risk. The present …

Healthcare Experiences Of Transgender Adults Who Are African American, Lacole Cole Apr 2024

Healthcare Experiences Of Transgender Adults Who Are African American, Lacole Cole

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

African Americans struggle to access healthcare because of a combination of overt racism, implicit bias from providers, and the effects of systemic racism. As a result, researchers have studied the challenges of this specific adult population. Less research has been centered on those individuals who are both African American and transgender. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore the experiences of this population. Guided by intersectionality theory, the study’s research question asked about the experiences of African American transgender adults and their efforts to obtain necessary healthcare services to manage optimal health. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with …

Perceptions Of Violent Content And Their Relationships On Aggressive Behavior: The Effects Of Implicit Beliefs On Aggression In Relation To Video Content, Logan Mccombs

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research shows that consuming violent media can lead to increased aggression in thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Several other factors also contribute to such behaviors but have not been thoroughly studied including implicit beliefs about aggression in relation to media content. This two-part study consists of (1) an exploratory iterated principal-factor method to create an implicit belief measure about consuming violent media in conjunction with correlational analyses and (2) between subjects hierarchical linear regression models to determine what effects implicit beliefs have on subsequent aggression after participants view either a violent of nonviolent video, while controlling for violent media consumption …

The Influence Of Religious And Political Discrepancies On Parent-Adolescent Social Cohesion, Emily De Schweinitz Taylor Apr 2024

The Influence Of Religious And Political Discrepancies On Parent-Adolescent Social Cohesion, Emily De Schweinitz Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

American youth are leaving organized religion at historical levels. Given that religious and political similarity (consensual solidarity) tends to strengthen affectual solidarity (emotional connection) in parent-adolescent dyads, decreasing adolescent religiousness and increasing political disagreements may threaten family social cohesion. However, during adolescence, youth empathy skills tend to increase and adolescents’ conflict with their parents tends to eventually subside. Based on principles outlined in intergenerational family solidarity theory, I hypothesized that adolescent empathy skills and authoritative parenting style would buffer the negative relational effects of religious and political discrepancies within the parent-adolescent relationship. I used Waves 2-4 (referred to as Times …

This thesis explores NHPI college students' perceptions of how their university instructors foster or undermine their sense of school belonging. A snowball sample of 97 NHPI students participated in 18 focus groups that included students from various islands and ethnicities in Oceania who were attending one U.S. university in the Pacific Rim. Focus group data were transcribed …

The Motivation Paradox: Exploring Copyright’S Assumptions About Creativity And The Allocation Of Creative Resources, Alina Ng Apr 2024

The Motivation Paradox: Exploring Copyright’S Assumptions About Creativity And The Allocation Of Creative Resources, Alina Ng

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

Copyright is instrumental in promoting the progress of science by encouraging authors and other creators to produce and disseminate creative works by granting them an exclusive property right over the creative resources they produce. However, only some copyrighted works correlate with this goal. Some works do not promote a better society, while others harm society’s well-being. The existence of these works demonstrates that the legal structures in copyright law are somehow encouraging the production of works that do not correlate with the goals of progress. One reason might be that the law has not adequately defined the word “progress.” The …

Like, Comment, And Follow: How To Amend Copyright Law To Protect Black Tiktokers, Ny'esha Young

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

The Black community has long suffered through a cycle of trauma and pain, with history repeating itself throughout generations. From the civil rights movement to the Black Lives Matter movement, this cycle persists, showing up again in the experiences of Black TikTokers. Despite looking race-neutral on its face, copyright law’s lack of understanding of how Black art can manifest itself has become more obvious in the world of digital creativity. Stuck in a cycle of appropriation, Black TikTokers find themselves facing a familiar dilemma as their work is replicated without compensation or credit, echoing the historical struggles of Black musicians. …

Three Essays On Education Policy, Intergroup Relations, And Human Capital Accumulation, Wai Meng Jeremy Siow Apr 2024

Three Essays On Education Policy, Intergroup Relations, And Human Capital Accumulation, Wai Meng Jeremy Siow

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The impact of education on fostering the development of human capital and molding sociopolitical attitudes from an early age is a well-explored topic in the field of social sciences. This dissertation takes a broader approach by delving into the consequences of two critical components of the education system: (1) the language used for instruction, and (2) citizenship education. To accomplish this, I employ a combination of observational and experimental research methods to disentangle the causal effects of these educational factors within the contexts of Malaysia and Singapore. Chapter 2 delves into the ramifications of adopting a non-native language of instruction …

Objects Are Subordinate To Spatial Features As Cues For Control, Abhishek Dey Apr 2024

Objects Are Subordinate To Spatial Features As Cues For Control, Abhishek Dey

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

It is well documented that people can engage in flexible adjustments of attention using context cues from the environment. The most prolific cue used to assess such context-specific attentional control in the literature has been location (or spatial features). Context-specific attentional control using object features has been less well researched and some of the most conclusive evidence of object-based attentional control comes from designs where location and spatial features cannot be used to guide attentional control. Across five experiments, I investigate the interplay between object and spatial features in their usefulness to guide attentional control when both are available as …

Implementation Of Psychiatric Collaborative Care Management In Rural Primary Care Practices, Ryan Dean Kruis Apr 2024

Implementation Of Psychiatric Collaborative Care Management In Rural Primary Care Practices, Ryan Dean Kruis

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Behavioral health (BH) disorders are highly prevalent in the United States and especially concerning in rural communities which disproportionately lack access to BH services. While models for integrating BH into primary care, such as psychiatric collaborative care management (CoCM), have shown promise in mitigating the BH crisis, implementation in rural communities has proved challenging.
This dissertation examines implementation of CoCM nationally and in rural settings through three distinct aims. First, a claims-based retrospective cohort study was used to determine whether commercially insured patients receiving CoCM had lower acute BH care utilization and cost as compared to similar patients not receiving …

Work Hardening And Mindfulness Training For Individuals Living With Traumatic Limb Loss, Jayda Gibson, Cassandra Nelson

Spring 2024 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

About 185,000 amputations occur every year, leaving roughly about 2 million individuals currently living with limb loss in the United States. Within this population, about 45% of these injuries occur from traumatic events (Department of Veteran Affairs, 2022). These events include military veterans injured in combat, civilian motor vehicle accidents, gun shot wounds, industrial incidents, and various other traumatic events (Pomares et al., 2020). Due to the the recent loss of a limb, individuals within this population are at high risk of occupational abandonment secondary to many factors that are discussed within the Model of Human Occupation. Following a traumatic …

Associations Between Young Children's Problematic Media Use And Physiological Regulation -- Does Temperament Act As A Mediator?, Noah Alexander Chojnacki

Theses and Dissertations

Given the ubiquity of media use, especially among young children, the current study examines the impact of problematic media use (PMU) on children's (N = 418, M age = 53.62 months, SD = 3.38 months, M and SD are taken from the full sample of 418 children) physiological functioning. With previous studies reporting relations between media use, temperament, and physiological regulation, it was hypothesized that children with greater levels of PMU would have lower levels of baseline respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA; a measure of physiological regulatory capacity). It is further hypothesized that, higher levels of negative affect, and lower levels …

Social Media Among College Students, Julia Martorano Apr 2024

Social Media Among College Students, Julia Martorano

Within the past decade, social media has become a huge part of most peoples’ everyday life. People use social media to keep up with old friends, to see what their current friends and family are up to, to follow celebrities, and so much more. Researchers and the general public have begun to wonder if this obsession with social media is detrimental to individuals and society. Throughout my research, I strived to answer two research questions. “How does social media affect a college student’s GPA, productivity, and life satisfaction?” and “How do celebrities and companies create social media content that drives …
