The Examination Of The Relationship Social Media Usage And Self-Diagnosis Of Mental Disorders, Felicity West Apr 2024

The Examination Of The Relationship Social Media Usage And Self-Diagnosis Of Mental Disorders, Felicity West

ATU Scholars Symposium

Abstract

This research examines the relationship between algorithmic social media platforms and self-diagnosis of mental disorders. Looking specifically at psychopathology, the enhancements and pioneering of new algorithmic social media platforms have made the facilitation of forged disorders and exaggerated symptoms quickly widespread. The most notable example, Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), has led a plethora of youth to self-diagnose and romanticize one of the most serious and rare mental health disorders recognized by the APA (Hatigan et al., 2023). This becomes increasingly problematic because it diminishes the severity and urgency for those who are clinically diagnosed with DID. To investigate the …

Applying Spring/Summer 2024 Fashion Trends To Modest Tween Fashion, Hannah Grace Shirley

Liberty University Research Week

This research explores how current fashion trends can be adapted to fit the modesty values of Christian tween girls. Analyzing cultural beliefs, fashion trends, and the needs of Christian families with daughters will inform a small collection of age-appropriate, modest clothing for middle school girls. A review of literature, both Christian and secular, provides a picure of current influences on fashion. In today’s culture, relatively new ideas about homosexuality, transgenderism, marriage, and sex shape how many people, especially women, act and dress. Where clothing once emphasized femininity and modesty, most women’s clothing today emphasizes comfort or sexuality. These changes also …

Beyond The Horizon Glows: A Poetic Reimagining Of Augustine’S Philosophy Of Memoria, Sarah Tate Apr 2024

Beyond The Horizon Glows: A Poetic Reimagining Of Augustine’S Philosophy Of Memoria, Sarah Tate

Liberty University Research Week

This oral presentation delivers an original collection of poetry composed around St. Augustine’s idea of memoria (memory) as outlined in his autobiographical Confessions. The poetic collection “Beyond the Horizon Glows” follows the same framework of the introspective work as it moves from personal recollection to exploring more abstract notions, such as memory, time, and creation. In this sense, the collection echoes the Augustinian philosophy of how memory acts as the catalyst for retrospective meaning, bridging the gap between man, world, and God. This collection treats memory as the profound concept that it is, framing it as an entry to a …

The Perceptions And Experiences Of Divine Grace And Gratitude To God Among Christian And Non-Christian Populations: A Consensual Qualitative Research-Modified Approach, Miriam Bowser

Liberty University Research Week

Grace and gratitude to God have recently emerged as prevalent topics within positive psychology for their benefits such as mental, physical, and relational well-being. However, the relationship between these two concepts has been neglected in empirical research. The current study aims to address this gap in the literature and investigate how Christian and non-Christian lay populations perceive divine grace and gratitude to God. This study attempts to address an additional gap in the literature by comparing both Christian and non-Christian perceptions of grace and gratitude to God, since most current research is heavily limited to Christian populations. Modified consensual qualitative …

Appreciative Inquiry For A Supportive Climate, Ann Liao Apr 2024

Appreciative Inquiry For A Supportive Climate, Ann Liao

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Most of the nonprofit organizations rely heavily on volunteers. In a service-learning course that works with nonprofit community partners, it is important to foster a supportive climate. Traditional problem-solving procedures typically involve identifying a problem, brainstorming for possible solutions, evaluating possible solutions, and implementation. With positive framing, a traditional problem-solving approach could be transformed by the method of appreciative inquiry. Traditional problem-solving approach is weaknesses-based, and appreciative inquiry is strengths-based. This paper demonstrates that appreciative inquiry is more effective in building a supportive climate when working with nonprofit community partners. Appreciative inquiry starts with discovering the successes of an organization, …

Finding Combinatorial Patterns In Real Valued Omics Data, Kenneth Smith Apr 2024

Finding Combinatorial Patterns In Real Valued Omics Data, Kenneth Smith

Dissertations

Precision medicine is a healthcare approach which tailors disease prevention and treatment to an individual, based on their genetics, environment, lifestyle, and physiological state. These factors interact to produce biological changes that can be measured to produce data called omics, and include genomics, lipidomics, and proteomics. Despite the abundance of omics data and analysis techniques, researchers still struggle to identify biological findings that replicate across data sets and translate into clinical applications. In this dissertation, we employ combinatorial optimization techniques to improve upon three steps in the precision medicine analysis pipeline: 1) data cleaning, 2) community detection, and 3) feature …
