Do Not Neglect To Show Hospitality To Strangers: Developing And Implementing A Program Of Home Hospitality At Furnace Creek Baptist Church, Philip D. Bramblet
Do Not Neglect To Show Hospitality To Strangers: Developing And Implementing A Program Of Home Hospitality At Furnace Creek Baptist Church, Philip D. Bramblet
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The researcher identified the lack of intentional interaction for the sake of the gospel between members of Furnace Creek Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, VA and people in the local community as an issue that should be addressed. This problem was addressed by developing and implementing a program of home hospitality with members of FCBC. Hospitality in private homes was identified as an important and biblical method of increasing interaction between the church and the community that has been neglected in doctoral action research. Many hospitality projects have addressed the corporate hospitality dynamic, but few have dealt with Christian hospitality …
The Relationship Between Participation In Chorus And The Acquisition Of Higher-Order Reasoning Skills Among Middle School Students, Jason M. Streun
The Relationship Between Participation In Chorus And The Acquisition Of Higher-Order Reasoning Skills Among Middle School Students, Jason M. Streun
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This predictive correlational study examined the relationship between participation in chorus and the acquisition of higher-order reasoning skills among middle school students. Although the education profession focuses on ways to engender higher-order reasoning skills in their students, today’s high-stakes climate so rigorously addresses STEM subjects that it tends to ostracize music from the discussion. Thus, the significance of this study lies partly in its endeavor to better understand the connection between linguistic development and reasoning, the positive influence that participation in choral music can potentially wield in the acquisition and improvement of linguistic skill, and, correspondingly, the attainment of higher-order …
A Phenomenological Study Of Adoptive Parents’ Distress, Erica Rhoads
A Phenomenological Study Of Adoptive Parents’ Distress, Erica Rhoads
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of distress in parents who have adopted internationally. The aim was also to discover what this lived experience is like through the perception of both objective and subjective reality, providing understanding and meaning from the perception and experience of adopting and then parenting children who have experienced significant trauma. An additional goal of this study was to evaluate the experience of sharing their adoption story within a narrative therapy support group as a way to alleviate some of their distress. A focus on the background of adoption …
Cocurricular Activities As Contributors To The Development Of Intercultural Competence In Undergraduate Non-Nursing Allied Health Students: A Causal-Comparative Study, Tanya Lewis
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This quantitative, causal-comparative study aimed to explore the difference between the intercultural development scores of physical therapy assistants, radiological technology, sonography, and surgical technology undergraduate health science students based on their participation in a diversity module. Interculturally competent allied health students transitioning into practice support a more diverse, culturally competent workforce of healthcare workers challenged to care for an increasingly diverse patient population. There is scant research in higher education literature on the intercultural development of undergraduate non-nursing health science students. There is a gap in the literature on whether higher education systems should develop a standardized curriculum that supports …

A Phenomenological Study Examining The Lived Experiences Of Middle School Students Who Have Demonstrated Challenges In Math And Their Expectations To Improve Their Performance, Steven Duane Fencl
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of middle school students who have challenges in math and their expectations of opportunities provided to improve their performance at a middle school in the Spring Valley School District. The theory that guided this study was Vroom’s expectancy theory, which argues that the tendency of a person to act in a certain way depends on what the person expects to happen, that it will be favorable to the person, and that the person feels the result will provide a potential gain. The central research question was, “How do …

Reed Smoot And The League Of Nations: Duty To Church And Party, Brandon Hellewell
Reed Smoot And The League Of Nations: Duty To Church And Party, Brandon Hellewell
The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
Senator Reed Smoot (R-UT) lived his life with two great devotions, the Republican Party and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1919, he held high positions in both. At that time, and in his seventeenth year as a senator, Smoot served as a member of the Senate Finance Committee. He also served as an Apostle of the LDS Church. These two parts of Smoot's life created tensions at several junctures, including 1919 when the Republican Party and LDS Church took opposing sides in the battle over United States membership in the League of Nations. The Church supported …

Gpr-16 Attention Driven Framework For Detecting Mental Illness Causes From Social Media, Abm Adnan Azmee, Dinesh Chowdary Attota, Francis E Nweke
C-Day Computing Showcase
Mental health is a critical aspect of our overall well-being. Mental illness refers to conditions that impact an individual's psychological state, resulting in considerable distress, and limitations in functioning day-to-day tasks. Due to the progress of technology, social media has merged as the platform, for individuals to share their thoughts and emotions. The psychological state of individuals can be accessed with the help of data from these platforms. However, it is challenging for conventional machine learning models to analyze the diverse linguistic contexts of social media data. In this work, we propose a novel attention-driven deep framework to overcome these …

A Canadian Civil Affairs Officer In Italy: Lieutenant-Colonel H. S. Robinson, Provincial Commissioner For Brescia In 1945, Janet Sanders, Rolando Anni, Maria Paola Pasini
Canadian Military History
This article provides an overview of one Canadian Civil Affairs Officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Homer Smiley Robinson, and his contribution to the rebuilding of the province of Brescia in north Italy and its eponymous capital after liberation from Nazi occupation. Robinson, as Provincial Commissioner, led the Civil Affairs team from April to October 1945 as the first Canadian to be appointed to the position. Traditionally, Civil Affairs has been studied predominantly as a bureaucratic structure. The human element in terms of staff and stakeholders has been almost entirely neglected. It is hoped that this account of a soldier-turned-governor will prove to be …

Optometric Clinical Practice
Background: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a double stranded DNA virus that infects much of the world’s population. The World Health Organization estimates 67% of people under the age of 50 have HSV-1 and 11% of people under the age of 50 have HSV-2. While most systemic infections remain inactive and do not cause symptoms, the activation and appearance of ocular HSV can be a destructive and vision-threatening issue. HSV keratitis can be epithelial, stromal or a combination. Patients who have recently undergone photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) have a higher risk of HSV keratitis. Because of this, HSV keratitis should be …

Headache And Vision Loss As Initial Symptoms For An Acute Invasive Rhino-Orbital-Cerebral Mucormycosis, Thanh Le Od, Gregg Wentworth Od
Optometric Clinical Practice
Background: Acute invasive rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) is a rare fungal infection commonly caused by Rhizopus species. It occurs in immune- compromised individuals who have acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), leukemia, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, or organ transplant patients who are on immunosuppressive therapy. Diagnosing invasive ROCM is challenging because its clinical presentation can be nonspecific, and it is not frequently observed in ophthalmic practices. Case Report: A 66-year-old Hispanic male with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus presented with the complaint of severe headache and retrobulbar pain in the right eye. An ophthalmic examination revealed normal ocular health in both eyes. Computerized tomography …
Impacts Of Nostalgia Intervention On Wellbeing Over Time: A Proposed Study, Josh R. Burdick
Impacts Of Nostalgia Intervention On Wellbeing Over Time: A Proposed Study, Josh R. Burdick
2024 Symposium
Research indicates that nostalgia, “a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past,” increases perceptions of social support and meaning in life. The proposed study is intended to complement the existing cross-sectional studies via examination of nostalgia’s effects over time. This study will measure the effects of weekly nostalgia interventions on loneliness and well-being over a period of three weeks.
Participants will engage in three weekly nostalgia interventions in which they write about and reflect upon a personally significant nostalgic memory. After each weekly session, participants will complete measures for loneliness as well as two key areas of well-being: perceived …

Abstract: This research paper explores the relationship between social media usage and stress levels among student-athletes at Sacred Heart University. The paper argues that while technology has made college life easier, social media can have negative effects on mental health, particularly stress. The study uses a regression model to analyze data on stress levels and different variables. The data that has been collected is a cross- section data collected from a survey with 70 responses in a single-point in time. The results suggest that there is no direct effect between social media usage and stress levels among student-athletes, but that …

The mental preparation of a tennis player, or any athlete in general, is one of the most crucial characteristics for developing a successful personality. The will, control, and critical thinking are necessary at all stages of an athlete's development. The psychologic aspect is considered multidirectional and is often seen as a determining factor in the formation of the psychology of the winner. It additionally leads to the improvement of physical, technical, and tactical skills. People tend to forget about the importance of the mental aspect because of the daily routine. At the same time, the actual necessity of psychological strength …
Growth Mindset In Higher Education: Does Professor Identity Matter?, Abigail V. Wilk
Growth Mindset In Higher Education: Does Professor Identity Matter?, Abigail V. Wilk
Academic Festival
When professors are perceived to promote a growth mindset—i.e., the idea that intelligence can be improved through hard work—students show greater motivation and performance. Yet, the impact of a professor’s social identities, such as race and gender, on student perceptions remains unexplored. This study addresses this gap. In an experiment involving 467 college students, participants rated four teaching philosophies that conveyed either a growth or fixed mindset. Each teaching philosophy was paired with a photo of a supposed professor: one Black female, one Black male, one White female, and one White male. Students perceived growth mindset professors as warmer and …

Developmental Dynamics: Exploring Human Rights Adherence In Collectivist Societies Relative To Development Levels, Emma Grady
Academic Festival
The adherence or rejection of human rights standards outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is intricately linked to the levels of development in collectivist countries. Developed countries are more inclined to adhere to the UDHR due to several factors. Firstly, their advanced civil societies foster a greater appreciation for human rights values and principles. Secondly, developed states are more sensitive to their international reputation, particularly concerning their relations with Western dominating countries and trade practices. Consequently, the fear of damaging their standing on the global stage motivates them to uphold human rights standards outlined in the UDHR. …

How do we know if having more provides us with more of the lifestyle we want? Generation Z has a problem with indulging in a maximalist lifestyle, trusting influencers and our parasocial relationships with them over ourselves, which results in glorifying consumerism. Why can a video influence us further to act rather than our own habits or ambitions, and what can we do to cut out the noise? With this project, I want to create an audience between 18 and 30 who are searching for peace on their FYP and provide tactics to help them be more comfortable with in …

Faithful Integration: The Importance Of Worldview, Hermeneutics, And Theology For Christian Counseling, Nicole C. Biller
Salubritas: International Journal of Spirit-Empowered Counseling
Efforts to integrate faith with psychological science and counseling have been present within Christian graduate programs for decades; however, questions remain about how to do this effectively. A brief review of integration efforts and a survey of the experience of graduate students within these programs reveal a desire to further model this practical integration within the classroom. Possible solutions emphasize a biblically informed worldview, intentionally crafted hermeneutics, and well developed theology, which can lead to faith-informed counseling practices.
Pentecostal Hope In The Age Of Covid-19, Peter Althouse, Audrey E. Mccormick
Pentecostal Hope In The Age Of Covid-19, Peter Althouse, Audrey E. Mccormick
Salubritas: International Journal of Spirit-Empowered Counseling
This research sought to identify how Pentecostals and charismatics responded to the Coronavirus pandemic. Specifically, what role did eschatology play in provoking hope, and how did theologies on healing influence responses? Data revealed that Pentecostals were generally not casting their responses to the pandemic as a millennial expectation of a better future but were grieving their losses and seeking to provoke hope amidst suffering. While minimal miraculous healings were reported, healing was cast primarily as the ongoing presence of defiant hope amidst trauma, grief and suffering. We propose that grief and grieving is an eschatological response to loss and death.
Exploring How Pentecostals Preach About Depression, Robert D. Mcbain
Exploring How Pentecostals Preach About Depression, Robert D. Mcbain
Salubritas: International Journal of Spirit-Empowered Counseling
A qualitative analysis was completed on twelve sermons into how Pentecostal preachers talk about depression from the pulpit using the Assemblies of God (AG) as a purposive sample. Findings illustrate that preachers talked about faulty thinking as the source of depression and interpreted depression as a transformative journey occurring within the context of a God encounter where the believer fixed their faulty thinking. While the way the preachers interpreted depression is not without critique, the article suggests that preaching about depression as a journey of encounter may help listeners frame their depression experiences within a narrative framework that helps them …
The Role Of Spirituality In The Lives Of Counselors: Reframing The Focus, Greg A. Meyer
The Role Of Spirituality In The Lives Of Counselors: Reframing The Focus, Greg A. Meyer
Salubritas: International Journal of Spirit-Empowered Counseling
The term spirituality is often hard to hear without prior, preconceived ideas and bias attached to it, and is often used interchangeably with other words, depending on one’s past and culture. The field of counselor education and supervision has also used the term in ambiguous ways, which has led to apprehension and a lack of clarity with which the term is taught and understood. This paper explains the historical focus of spirituality within the counselor education field, then redefines the focus towards the lives of counselors, but more specifically the lives of counseling students and the impact counselor educators might …

Building Bridges: A Student-Professor Dialogue About Spiritual Assumptions And Perspectives On Whiteness, Kyle N. Stueber, Andrea C. Walker
Salubritas: International Journal of Spirit-Empowered Counseling
One day in May during a recent year, a conversation began that launched several years of ongoing dialogue. A graduate student, Kyle, reached out to a graduate counseling professor, Andrea, to discuss some concerns and anxieties he felt in some of his class discussions. What began as a conversation about racial diversity in the counseling setting evolved into an exploration of different ways of looking at the sociocultural context of race in the United States, a topic discovered to have political and theological underpinnings. As a result of the dialogue, we realized that specific preconceived labels identifying political, theological, denominational, …
