Whiny Women: How Medical Gaslighting Becomes Medical Trauma, Neena Marcus
Whiny Women: How Medical Gaslighting Becomes Medical Trauma, Neena Marcus
Honors Projects
Background: The idea of “medical gaslighting” has been present since 1969, but it has increased in popularity in the recent century. Women in particular are at increased risk of being dismissed by their healthcare providers, as throughout history they have been deemed “hysterical” or untrustworthy when recounting their symptoms.
Methods: Articles were compiled from CINAHL Complete, Google Scholar, and the University of Washington library. A total of 33 articles were chosen and reviewed.
Results: Medical gaslighting results in lasting medical trauma, a decreased quality of life and detachment from standard healthcare. Six themes were recurrent in the papers utilized: sexism, …

Perception, Payment, And Pollution- Examining The Effects Of Air Quality On Health And Healthcare, Colin Sleeper
Economics ETDs
Abstract
This dissertation examines how air quality and public attention to environmental shock affect perceived health status and healthcare utilization. The first chapter uses publicly available survey data from BRFSS and a triple difference framework to analyze the effects of the 2018 wildfire season in Oregon on self-reported mental and physical health. Findings indicate that those in Oregon in 2018, during the period of heightened attention to wildfire smoke, experienced approximately 1.4 additional poor mental health days, on average. The second chapter includes Merative MarketScan commercial insurance claims data to test whether these changes translate into a behavioral response. Results …
Quantum Control Protocols For Robust Quantum Computing, Leeseok Kim
Quantum Control Protocols For Robust Quantum Computing, Leeseok Kim
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The fundamental goal of quantum computing is to precisely control quantum systems to perform meaningful tasks, including implementing high-fidelity quantum gates for reliable quantum computation and accurately simulating complex quantum many- body dynamics. In this dissertation, we develop improved quantum control protocols for three distinct objectives, quantum error suppression, quantum optimal control, and analog quantum algorithms, achieving performance beyond standard approaches. First, we introduce new dynamical decoupling protocols, including both determin- istic and randomized constructions, that can substantially outperform conventional deterministic sequences. We then extend the randomized approach to dynamically corrected gates. Second, we propose a randomized quantum optimal control …
Impact Of Third Trimester Alcohol Exposure (Ttae) On Oligodendrocyte Development And Behavior In Mice, Estrella Villicana
Impact Of Third Trimester Alcohol Exposure (Ttae) On Oligodendrocyte Development And Behavior In Mice, Estrella Villicana
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) during late gestation can cause cognitive, behavioral, and motor impairments associated with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). The third trimester corresponds to a critical period of brain growth and maturation. This study examined the effects of Third Trimester-equivalent Alcohol Exposure (TTAE) on oligodendrocyte development and adult behavior. Neonatal mice were exposed to ethanol or air vapor from postnatal day (P) 4–8. Immunohistochemical analyses were performed at P8 and P30 to assess myelination, apoptosis, and oligodendrocyte lineage progression. TTAE significantly reduced myelin basic protein (MBP) expression at P8, which was recovered by P30, indicating delayed developmental myelination. …
Exploring Color-Blind Racial Attitudes And Critical Race Theory - Informed Beliefs Among School Social Workers, Faith E. King
Exploring Color-Blind Racial Attitudes And Critical Race Theory - Informed Beliefs Among School Social Workers, Faith E. King
Social Work Doctoral Dissertations
Black Americans face unequal rates of psychological distress and misdiagnosis primarily due to systemic racism embedded in institutions. Despite these alarming realities, current mental health frameworks often cling to biased perceptions of wellness facilitated by White, Eurocentric norms that pathologize communal resilience and cultural expressions of healing. In clinical spaces, these realities are too often erased by the biased meanings and individualistic norms that render Black grief pathological and Black resistance dysfunctional. Dominant therapeutic modalities labeled “evidence-based” remain rooted in racially neutral, individualist assumptions that exclude the lived experiences of Black clients, as they were developed for them. The National …

Moving As Mycelium: Dance/Movement Therapy With Nature And Its Potential For Sustainability Transformations: A Literature Review, Abby Polk
Expressive Therapies Theses
Environmental degradation and destruction impact the long-term health and wellbeing of humans and ecosystems alike. Humans require new ways of relating to nature that support sustainable futures for all. This thesis argues that dance/movement therapy (DMT) with nature has the potential to facilitate sustainability transformations and that the embodiment of relationality can support the development of reciprocal human-nature relationships. This literature review is grounded in theories of relationality and reciprocity as conceptualized in various Indigenous knowledge systems and the fields of both sustainability and DMT. Existing research suggests that culturally-responsive, embodied, arts-based practices may increase human-nature connectedness and strengthen reciprocity …

Success By Design? A Combined Outcome And Process Program Evaluation Of California’S Early And Middle College High Schools, Brooke N. Martin-Gill
Education Dissertations
Early and Middle College High Schools (EMCHS) expand college access for
underrepresented students by integrating high school and college coursework within
community college settings. Despite strong reported outcomes, some EMCHS face
substantial student attrition. Limited research examines how EMCHS organizational
structures influence student persistence. This mixed methods outcome and process
evaluation seeks to address this research gap. Quantitative analysis (paired samples-t-
tests) examined statewide enrollment data (2017-2025) to determine whether significant
differences exist between Year 1 and Year 4 cohort enrollment. Qualitative analysis was
conducted through a deductive discourse analysis of Western Association of Schools and
Colleges (WASC) Self-Study reports …

BACKGROUND: Survivors of pediatric intensive care often experience prolonged morbidity, but recovery trajectories and features associated with impairment in general PICU populations remain uncertain. We aimed to explore the trajectory of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and fatigue in critically ill children over the first year following PICU discharge, and to identify baseline and PICU factors associated with worse outcomes.
METHODS: OCEANIC is a multicenter prospective cohort study across 10 English PICUs. Children aged 1 month-17 years with PICU stay ≥ 48 h were enrolled (2019-2022) and followed for 12-months (to 2023). HRQoL (PedsQL™ 4.0 Acute Versions) and fatigue (PedsQL™ …
The Drive Diaries: How Motivation Shapes Work And Performance, Christian D. Diaz
The Drive Diaries: How Motivation Shapes Work And Performance, Christian D. Diaz
Masters Theses, 2020-current
Employee motivation remains central to organizational research, yet less is known about how employees personally experience the relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and performance. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory and Expectancy Theory, this qualitative narrative inquiry examined how employees describe their motivational experiences and their influence on workplace effectiveness. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 3 employees across diverse industries and analyzed using thematic analysis.
Four themes emerged: (1) autonomy as a primary driver of sustained performance, (2) recognition as a reinforcing factor, (3) organizational culture as either amplifying or diminishing motivation, and (4) motivation as evolving across career stages. Findings …

Amplifying Strengths: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Elementary Teachers’ Culturally Proficient Practices With Newcomer Students Through An Appreciative Inquiry Lens, Mary Elizabeth Bradford
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of elementary educators working with newcomer students in a Southwest urban school district, with the purpose of identifying culturally proficient strengths that support student belonging and learning. Guided by an interpretive (hermeneutic) phenomenological approach and informed by Appreciative Inquiry, the study centered educators’ meaning-making rather than deficit-oriented perspectives. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with five elementary educators serving newcomer students across kindergarten through fifth grade. Analysis followed van Manen’s phenomenological methods and resulted in six interrelated themes: belonging before language; school as a cultural system; language as agency and identity; cultural …
Lowering Class Size To Improve Teaching And Learning Mathematics In Early Grades, Dianne S. Mccarthy
Lowering Class Size To Improve Teaching And Learning Mathematics In Early Grades, Dianne S. Mccarthy
Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education
Fourth-grade mathematics proficiency in the United States remains low, with only 39–57% of students meeting proficiency standards on NAEP, New York State, and TIMSS assessments. This article argues that reducing class sizes in the early grades (K–3) is an effective strategy to improve teaching and learning in mathematics. Evidence from the Tennessee STAR study and supporting research (Clanet, 2010; Cho et al., 2012) shows that smaller classes yield statistically significant and lasting gains in student achievement. Benefits include stronger teacher-student relationships, increased individualized attention, fewer disruptions, and more active student engagement. These conditions enable high-impact, constructivist approaches such as inquiry-based …

International Human Rights Law And Extrajudicial, Summary Or Arbitrary Execution In Africa, John Mukum Mbaku
Loyola of Los Angeles International and Comparative Law Review
International and regional human rights instruments, as well as the laws of many countries, including those in Africa, consider the right to life to be a very important and fundamental human right. Human rights defenders believe that without this right, individuals cannot enjoy or realize the other rights and fundamental freedoms that are guaranteed by and enshrined in international and regional human rights instruments, as well as in many national constitutions. However, despite the protections granted to the right to life by both international and domestic laws, it remains threatened by many individuals and groups. Threats to the right to …

A Constructional Approach To Multimodal Linguistic Analysis, Fredy A. Mendieta Rodriguez
A Constructional Approach To Multimodal Linguistic Analysis, Fredy A. Mendieta Rodriguez
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
This dissertation investigates the systematic organization of co‑speech gestures in referential communication, using data from Spanish‑speaking monolinguals and Spanish–English bilinguals. While traditional gesture research treats pointing as a universal phenomenon, the current analyses show that gestural productions display internal phonological patterning and context‑conditioned variability that parallels spoken constructions. Quantitative results demonstrate how referential distance and communicative context (find‑it versus misunderstanding situations) shape the selection of embodied phonological features—handshape, orientation, movement, and beats—revealing consistent associations between form and interactional demands. Qualitative analyses trace how gestural realizations reduce across discourse as shared understanding emerges. A new complexity metric, based on token frequency …

Saying “Yes, And” To A Changing Legal Profession Through Improv, Ben Bratman
Saying “Yes, And” To A Changing Legal Profession Through Improv, Ben Bratman
The Journal of Law Teaching and Learning
As legal practitioners confront the potent impacts of society’s latest technological innovation, legal education can and should say “yes, and” to all the change and uncertainty by leaning into the teaching of human skills. That’s “yes, and,” as in the guiding principle of improvisational theater, or improv. As a form of embodied learning through play, improv exercises are a proven tool for building and refining fundamental human skills, often called the “soft” skills, within a low-stakes learning environment. They can and should be a part of any law school’s effort to graduate confident and skilled communicators who are strong team …
Tracing Washback In Language Education: Theoretical Foundations And Policy Implications For Assessment Research-Practice Partnerships, Chia-Hsin Yin
Tracing Washback In Language Education: Theoretical Foundations And Policy Implications For Assessment Research-Practice Partnerships, Chia-Hsin Yin
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Washback—the influence of testing on teaching and learning—has become a central concern in language education, with important implications for assessment design, classroom practice, and educational policy. This paper synthesizes foundational theories and empirical studies on washback, drawing on models by Alderson and Wall (1993), Bailey (1996), Green (2007), and others to examine how test effects operate across micro-level classroom practices and macro-level policy contexts. At the micro level, research on self-assessment, portfolio-based assessment, digital tools, and stakeholder perspectives illustrates how test formats, teacher agency, and learner interpretations shape instructional behavior and learning experiences. At the macro level, national policies, language …
