Exploring Grit Among Hispanic Undergraduates At A South Texas Hispanic-Serving Institution, Lorraine Pedroza

Theses and Dissertations

Although an increasing number of Latinx students are enrolling in higher education, only a small percentage graduate from two and four-year universities compared to their counterparts. This study explored the relationship between demographic variables and grit scores among undergraduate students. Grit, defined as the perseverance and passion for long-term goals (Duckworth, 2009), has gained significant attention in education research due to its association with academic success and performance. This study utilized a quantitative research design to compare grit scores between junior and senior undergraduate students. A total of 166 participants were included in the analysis, with 69 respondents classified as …

An Examination Of Adverse Childhood Experiences As A Predictor Of Physical Activity In Emerging Adults, Christian Alvarado

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research highlights the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on health, yet their association with physical activity (PA) remains underexplored. This study investigated this relationship in a predominantly Hispanic sample of emerging adults, examining whether perceived barriers and benefits to exercise mediate the ACEs-PA relationship. A total of 442 college students aged 18-29 completed all measures. ACEs were assessed using the Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire, PA levels through the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF), and perceived exercise barriers/benefits via the Exercise Benefits/Barriers Scale. Bootstrapped Pearson correlations indicated a significant negative association between perceived barriers to exercise and PA …

Unanswered Calling: The Dynamics Of Occupational Calling Misalignment Between Leader And Follower, Hilda Obiri-Yeboah

Theses and Dissertations

Emerging research about occupational calling has shifted from occupational psychology to the organizational behavior field. However, the current research mostly focuses on individual calling but ignores the dynamics between varying levels of leader and member occupational calling interactions and potential outcomes. Guided by Social Exchange Theory and leader-follower fit, this thesis investigates four leader-follower occupational calling alignment and misalignment situations and their differentiated attitudinal and behavioral outcomes. Moreover, it identifies important boundary conditions that mitigate the negative effects of the misalignment. This paper synthesizes existing literature and presents a comprehensive model to understand occupational calling's impact on leader-follower dynamics. It …

Truth. Regardless Of Reconciliation?, Michael Moffitt Jun 2024

Truth. Regardless Of Reconciliation?, Michael Moffitt

Nevada Law Journal

Formal responses to historical injustices have typically taken one of two fundamental forms in the past hundred years. The first form is familiar to legal systems—a retributive process in which an adjudicative body measures the conduct of alleged wrongdoers against some set of established standards (think Nuremberg Trials). The second form is often labeled “alternative,” particularly in Western legal systems, despite its long history and increasing prevalence within the past few generations. It focuses on broad inclusion, shared responsibility for the outcomes, and a forward-looking perspective on the next steps beyond or in lieu of traditional criminal sanctions (think South …

Navigating Copay Adjustment Programs In Specialty Pharmacy, Farah Barada, Sarah Fillman, Angelica Berni, Samuel Casey Yokum Jun 2024

Navigating Copay Adjustment Programs In Specialty Pharmacy, Farah Barada, Sarah Fillman, Angelica Berni, Samuel Casey Yokum

All Publications

Many patients rely on copay cards from manufacturers to help pay for prescriptions, especially for specialty and brand name medications which often result in higher out of pocket expenses. Historically, copay card savings were applied to the patient’s out of pocket expense and/or deductible to help the patient save money on their prescription and benefit plan responsibilities. In some cases, this added up to thousands of dollars in savings. However, in 2018, many Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) and insurance plans began utilizing copay adjustment programs known as “copay accumulators” and “copay maximizers” as forms of utilization management. These programs are …

Breaking Down Siloes And Building Up Students: The Transformational Possibilities Of Professional Identity Formation, Lindsey P. Gustafson, Aric K. Short, Robin Thorner Jun 2024

Breaking Down Siloes And Building Up Students: The Transformational Possibilities Of Professional Identity Formation, Lindsey P. Gustafson, Aric K. Short, Robin Thorner

Faculty Scholarship

Under the ABA’s sequenced approach to implementation of Standard 303(b)(3), schools should now have developed plans for providing opportunities for professional identity formation and should be implementing them. These plans must provide students with an “intentional exploration of the values, guiding principles, and well-being practices considered foundational to successful legal practice.” In addition, these plans should provide for frequent opportunities for development, “during each year of law school and in a variety of courses and co-curricular and professional development activities.”

Because Standard 303(b)(3) is necessarily tied to the unique character, existing
structures, and available resources of a law school, each …

Subsidiarity And The Best Interests Of The Child, Lindsay Saligman Jun 2024

Subsidiarity And The Best Interests Of The Child, Lindsay Saligman

Chicago Journal of International Law

In the context of adoption, subsidiarity is the principle that children should remain with their birth families whenever possible, and whenever not possible, that in-country placements should take precedence over intercountry adoption. This Comment looks at the specific meaning of subsidiarity in the Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption. It highlights that the convention does not require intercountry adoption be a last resort, but rather that “due consideration” be given to placements “within the State of origin.” Then, the Comment looks at the domestic law of India, Colombia, and South Korea, three of …

Kids, No Phones At The Dinner Table: Analyzing The People’S Republic Of China’S Proposed “Minor Mode” Regulation And An International Right To The Internet, Tucker Craven

Chicago Journal of International Law

Around the world, governments are contemplating taking steps to reverse or mitigate the negative health and developmental effects that come from the increasing amount of time children are spending online and using screens. In 2023, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) released a draft regulation restricting minors’ screen time and internet use, which imposes a significant burden not only on children, but also on technology and internet companies that wish to continue operating in the country. However, the PRC’s proposed minor mode regulation is neither an extreme departure from the types of restrictions neighboring countries in East Asia have imposed …

Purpose: Portland, OR, is home to the world’s largest roller derby organization, the Rose City Rollers (RCR). Having the spotlight held upon the community, the organization takes immense pride in communicating its ongoing embrace of its queer and uniquely diverse players. With historical and present prejudice against the LGBT+ community, derby stands as a haven for players looking for a place that will embrace each player's identity. The purpose of the study is to see how RCR’s openly queer settings specifically impact the well-being of its queer members.

Methods: November 2023, I conducted three interviews and a research group using …

Marketing Budgeting In The Upper Echelons, Junqiu Jiang Jun 2024

Marketing Budgeting In The Upper Echelons, Junqiu Jiang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Marketing professionals and academics frequently highlight the challenges of obtaining and protecting the marketing budget. However, prior academic research predominantly focusses on the optimal allocation of a given marketing budget, with little attention directed towards understanding the organizational process of securing approval for the marketing budget. Accordingly, this dissertation addresses this gap with two essays examining the marketing budgeting process by drawing on the theories-in-use (TIU) of both Chief Marketing Officers (CMOs) seeking approval for the marketing budget, and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) approving the marketing budget. In Essay 1, I explore the objectives of both CMOs and CEOs …

Unpacking The Behavioral, Cognitive, Sleep, And Stress Associations With Smartphone Checking, Yi Jing Chua

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The widespread use of smartphones for various daily activities has led many users to habitually check their devices. Smartphone checking may be negatively associated with daily behavioural, health, affective, and cognitive outcomes when it interrupts individuals during their work, health, and well-being-enhancing pursuits. Yet, research on smartphone checking suffers from various research gaps, including the use of cross-sectional design which hinder interpretation of the direction of relationship between smartphone checking and daily outcomes, the presence of individual difference confounds, and relying on subjective smartphone checking measures that are susceptible to recall biases. To address these gaps, the study investigated the …

A Case Study In Vacillant Literary Analysis: Nella Larsen's Passing (1929), Sara Casten

University Honors Theses

For the last 95 years, Nella Larsen's Passing has been a topic of discussion within the literary and scholarly communities. First considered Larsen's folly, her second novella Passing had struggled to received a compliment from critics and was quickly lost to readers until her work was rediscovered in the early 1970s. However, unbound by the restrictive literary trope of the era, scholars now wonder if Larsen's Passing had been a misinterpreted masterpiece. This thesis outlines the initial interpretations of critics and modern understanding of scholars in order to highlight the influences of outside influences when reading a written work from …

The Association Of Acute Stress And Single Leg Balance, Theodore W. Gehrig Iii Jun 2024

The Association Of Acute Stress And Single Leg Balance, Theodore W. Gehrig Iii

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Chronic low back pain is a widespread and expensive societal burden that is routinely near the top of the list of reasons people live with a disability. There is an undeniable connection between low back pain and psychological stress, and it has long been accepted that stress comes as a consequence of the burden of pain. Our group sought to determine if the inverse of this paradigm might be true: that stress may actually play a role in the etiology of low back pain through its influence on neuromuscular control and strategies for balance stability. In this dissertation, we include …

In the era of total digitization of documents, navigating vast and heterogeneous data landscapes presents significant challenges for effective information retrieval, both for humans and digital agents. Traditional methods of knowledge organization often struggle to keep pace with evolving user demands, resulting in suboptimal outcomes such as information overload and disorganized data. This thesis presents a case study on a pipeline that leverages principles from cognitive science, graph theory, and semantic computing to generate semantically organized knowledge graphs. By evaluating a combination of different models, methodologies, and algorithms, the pipeline aims to enhance the organization and retrieval of digital documents. …

Trauma-Informed Teaching With Adult English Language Learners: A Study In A Community-Based Organization, Elizabeth Eastman Jun 2024

Trauma-Informed Teaching With Adult English Language Learners: A Study In A Community-Based Organization, Elizabeth Eastman

Doctoral Dissertations

Often, immigrants in the United States have suffered traumatic experiences in their home country, on their journey to the U.S., and/or in their process of acculturation. In English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes, symptoms of trauma can interfere with learning and acculturation. Trauma-Informed teaching can meet the needs of students who have been impacted by trauma but it is not often used in ESOL classes. This is due to a lack of teacher training, and a gap in the literature on the effects of the approach and studies that explore the perspectives of the students. Based in phenomenology …

A Multi-Objective Facility Coverage Location Problem For Emergency Medical Service Decisions In Hajj, Huda Zaki Naji, Mohanad Al-Behadili, Mohammad Sari Kadim

Baghdad Science Journal

This paper proposes a multi-objective facility model of coverage location problem to determine the number, locations, and redeployments of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system. The EMS runs with two types of ambulances, Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advance Life Support (ALS). The suggested Multi-objective Coverage Location model (MO-CL) considers a bi-objective function, which is minimizing the EMS costs and the fatigue of EMS crew members. This can be managed by reducing the number of redeployments for both types of ambulances while still providing the required coverage levels. The MO-CL model is based on the approximation hypercube model that eliminates the …
