Immigration, Machismo, And Cultural Stigmatization: Causes Of Lack Of Mental Health Treatment Utilization Among Mexican Men In The U.S., Cynthia M. De La Torre-Lopez

University Honors Theses

Within academia, the topic of Latino men's mental health treatment utilization does not gather enough discussion. Even less, the area of Mexican men's mental health which although part of the Latino population, has specific stressors and implications. The following thesis will present a literature review method in order to answer the following research question, "How does machismo, stigma, and immigration affect the utilization of mental health treatment among Mexican men living in the U.S.?" These three predictors: machismo, stigma and immigration will be discussed in order to find an explanation as to why Mexican men are less likely to search …

Sex Toys In The City: Pleasure, Profit, And Sex-Positive Cultures In Portland, Abigail Jobe Jun 2024

Sex Toys In The City: Pleasure, Profit, And Sex-Positive Cultures In Portland, Abigail Jobe

University Honors Theses

Since the development of sex stores, the product appeal has been directed toward cisgender men and excluded minority groups including women and queer people, creating an experience exclusive to the male gaze. With this, products sold at early sex stores often did not appeal to these minority populations and it was often uncomfortable for women to shop in traditional stores. However, in the 1970s, feminists began to create sex stores directed toward women and they in turn became hubs for information. Through my research process, which included ethnographic work both in Portland and online, I have considered the past challenges …

Introduction: Alcohol related dementia (ARD) is a long-term, heterogeneous cognitive impairment that can develop in the course of excessive and prolonged use of alcohol. This integrative literature review evaluated the relevant research, preventative measures, and early detection of brain changes leading to memory impairment as a result of the chronic consumption of alcohol. Widespread prevention and detection of ARD can be achieved through the support of healthcare professiona ls in understanding, observing, and catching behavioral patterns ahead of time to properly direct treatment. The risk factors associated with an early diagnosis of dementia include, but are not limited to, abnormal …

Death With Dignity: Queer Representation In Deathcare Systems, Esmé Ringelstetter Jun 2024

Death With Dignity: Queer Representation In Deathcare Systems, Esmé Ringelstetter

University Honors Theses

This thesis examines the ways that elderly members of the LGBT community lack representation within deathcare systems. Currently, the LGBT community is vastly underrepresented in research relating to the dying process and deathcare. This lack of representation creates barriers for LGBT individuals at the end of their lives and creates difficult end-of-life experiences. I utilized previous research that studied how LGBT populations interact with and are treated by a variety of death care-related systems, including health systems, legal systems, and therapeutic systems. This research highlighted the need for the LGBT community to be better represented within both research relating to …

Exploring Professional Identities In Libraries: The Impact Of Credit-Bearing Courses Beyond Student Learning, Jane Hammons, Daniel S. Dotson, Hanna Primeau, Diana Ramey

Communications in Information Literacy

In this essay, we argue in support of library-led information literacy (IL) credit courses, emphasizing the impact that developing, teaching, and managing these courses can have on the professional identity of library faculty and staff. Existing research has indicated that librarians who teach credit courses may more strongly identify as teachers than those who teach only course-integrated sessions. We expand on this research by sharing the perspective of four individuals who are involved in the design, instruction, and coordination of credit-bearing IL courses, including two faculty librarians and two staff members. By providing these differing voices, we give a unique …

Choose Your Own Research Adventure: An Asynchronous Tutorial To Address “Research As Inquiry”, Stacy Brinkman, Samantha Hilton Jun 2024

Choose Your Own Research Adventure: An Asynchronous Tutorial To Address “Research As Inquiry”, Stacy Brinkman, Samantha Hilton

Communications in Information Literacy

The Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education posits that the practice of asking questions in order to deepen inquiry and understanding is a key element of information literacy. While the “Research as Inquiry” frame is teachable in library instruction, it can be difficult to scale. Popular instructional design software tends to present information in linear formats that can limit how students understand the iterative nature of research. This article presents an attempt at an asynchronous tutorial that overcomes this limitation of medium and that presents “Research as Inquiry” through an iterative and question-based online game. We discuss the development, …

Independent Long Covid Journalism As A Lens For Critical Information Literacy: Conversations With The Sick Times Founders Betsy Ladyzhets And Miles W. Griffis, Andrea Baer

Communications in Information Literacy

Both the COVID-19 pandemic and the acceleration of climate change illuminate how difficult it can be to make sense of information about wicked problems—that is, issues that are highly complex and have no simple or complete solutions (Rittel & Webber, 1973). One approach to grappling with wicked problems is to consider the information practices that different people, communities, or professions use to make sense of those issues. In this Perspectives piece, I explore possible ways to practice and teach about critical information literacy by looking to the views, experiences, and professional practices of two independent journalists who report on …

Breaking Bias: A Singular Chapter Solution For Racial Equity In Consumer Bankruptcy, Jerron Wheeler Jun 2024

Breaking Bias: A Singular Chapter Solution For Racial Equity In Consumer Bankruptcy, Jerron Wheeler

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

This article explores the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, revealing a looming medical debt crisis among Black families, while examining the intersection of racial bias, attorney practices, and the existing two-chapter consumer bankruptcy system. Proposing a solution, the article advocates for the consolidation of Chapters 7 and 13 into a single chapter, citing the Consumer Bankruptcy Reform Act of 2020 (CBRA) as a potential remedy. Further, this article argues that a single chapter would simplify the bankruptcy process, reducing the influence of attorney bias and promoting uniform eligibility criteria. This approach aims to make debt relief more accessible, especially for …

All NMU Master's Theses

This qualitative study investigated how six experienced elementary school principals in Washtenaw County identify internal candidates for future principal positions, aiming to enhance understanding of educational leadership and succession planning. The research addresses two primary questions: (1) How do principals identify prospective internal candidates for school leadership? and (2) What competencies or characteristics do principals use to determine candidates' suitability for school leadership? Three themes emerged for the first question: informal recognition of leadership potential through daily interactions; providing leadership opportunities such as leading committees or mentoring teachers; and engaging in direct conversations about career goals. For the second question, …

Harold Bell Wright’S Civil Religion: God And The Groceryman, John J. Han Jun 2024

Harold Bell Wright’S Civil Religion: God And The Groceryman, John J. Han

KAUPA Letters

As Harold Bell Wright’s novel God and the Groceryman (1927)—a sequel to The Calling of Dan Matthews—opens, Dan appears as a millionaire miner in Kansas City. Having accumulated sufficient wealth, he promotes “a practical Christianity” aimed at saving America “by the worship of God” in the imaginary Ozarks city of Westover. In the novel, the word church appears 450 times, but the term mainly highlights how the main character’s ministry has little to do with institutional Christianity. The words denomination and denominational appear 318 times in the novel, but Wright uses them in a negative sense, which reflects his Restorationist …

Ang Dalumat Ng Loob Sa Musika Ng Sb19, Atoy M. Navarro, Mark Joseph P. Santos Jun 2024

Ang Dalumat Ng Loob Sa Musika Ng Sb19, Atoy M. Navarro, Mark Joseph P. Santos

Katipunan

Ceo Characteristics And Risk-Taking Under Economic Policy Uncertainty, Ivan Stetsyuk, Ayca Altintig, Kerim Peren Arin, Moo Sung Kim

All Works

This paper investigates the effects of such CEO characteristics as gender, age, and education on the CEOs’ risk-taking behavior during periods of economic policy uncertainty. The paper utilizes Execucomp, BoardEx, and Compustat data from 2005 to 2017 in order to give a novel perspective on how CEO characteristics may provide differing risk-taking positions when faced with varying levels of uncertainty. The results offer robust evidence that older CEOs generally take less risk—regardless of the level of economic policy uncertainty. However, more educated CEOs take less risk only during economically uncertain times. The results also indicate that while female CEOs tend …

Encendiendo La Intuición/Igniting Intuition: A Bilingual Reading Specialist's Lived Experiences And Reclaiming Of Literacies, Dora M. Guzmån

Dissertations

This autoethnography explores the researcher’s lived experiences as a first-generation Latina, bilingual reading specialist who developed biliteracy in English/Spanish from childhood through adulthood and how this ignited her cultural intuition. Framed by a critical, Chicana feminist lens, she analyzed her personal and professional biliteracy practices and cultural intuition to understand how she supported young bilingual readers. Qualitative data were collected retroactively and in-the-moment (e.g., voice/written reflective memos, journals). The study research focused on how her cultural intuition guided: a) her role and practice as a bilingual reading specialist; b) her role and practice as a bilingual literacy practitioner of bilingual …

A Convergent Parallel Mixed Methods Examination Of The Impact Of Graduate Student Loan Balances On Overall Quality Of Life Among Clinical Psychologists With Psyd Degrees, Lekai James

Dissertations

Graduate student loan debt in psychology, particularly for those with Doctorate in Psychology (PsyD) degrees in clinical psychology, is highly problematic. Previous research has shown that student loan debt negatively impacts quality of life (QOL) by affecting subjective well-being (SWB) and life satisfaction (LS). This study used a convergent parallel mixed method approach, guided by bottom-up spillover theory and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, to explore the relationship between QOL and total graduate student loan balances, as well as the effects of income and monthly student loan payments on QOL among PsyD graduates. Participants (N = 16) completed a survey with …

The Criminal Trajectory Of Paraphilic Noncontact Sexual Offenders: An Exploratory Study In An Incarcerated United States Sample, Emma F. Collie

Student Theses

Despite the misconception, many sexual offenses do not involve physical contact with a victim. Research indicates that exhibitionism, a noncontact offense, is the most reported sex crime. While some research has demonstrated the escalation from noncontact to contact offending, much of the data is outdated or used small samples. This study seeks to build upon the literature by examining archival records of 3,175 sex offenders incarcerated in the U.S. This study examined the number of offenders who progressed from noncontact to contact offenses and compared the demographic, crime, and risk characteristics of those convicted of noncontact offenses and those convicted …

An Examination Of Adverse Childhood Experiences As A Predictor Of Physical Activity In Emerging Adults, Christian Alvarado Jun 2024

An Examination Of Adverse Childhood Experiences As A Predictor Of Physical Activity In Emerging Adults, Christian Alvarado

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research highlights the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on health, yet their association with physical activity (PA) remains underexplored. This study investigated this relationship in a predominantly Hispanic sample of emerging adults, examining whether perceived barriers and benefits to exercise mediate the ACEs-PA relationship. A total of 442 college students aged 18-29 completed all measures. ACEs were assessed using the Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire, PA levels through the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF), and perceived exercise barriers/benefits via the Exercise Benefits/Barriers Scale. Bootstrapped Pearson correlations indicated a significant negative association between perceived barriers to exercise and PA …

Theses and Dissertations

Emerging research about occupational calling has shifted from occupational psychology to the organizational behavior field. However, the current research mostly focuses on individual calling but ignores the dynamics between varying levels of leader and member occupational calling interactions and potential outcomes. Guided by Social Exchange Theory and leader-follower fit, this thesis investigates four leader-follower occupational calling alignment and misalignment situations and their differentiated attitudinal and behavioral outcomes. Moreover, it identifies important boundary conditions that mitigate the negative effects of the misalignment. This paper synthesizes existing literature and presents a comprehensive model to understand occupational calling's impact on leader-follower dynamics. It …
