Developing Cultural Humility Through The Arts: Evaluating An Arts Intervention For Healthcare Provider Leaders, Katie L. Nickel

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

At all levels of healthcare, providers are experiencing rising levels of professional burnout. For healthcare provider leaders, burnout is particularly critical since leaders must maintain healthy and trusting relationships with patients and their teams of healthcare professionals. This utilization-focused evaluation study explores an arts intervention program designed to promote cultural humility among healthcare providers. Increased cultural humility may provide coping tools for healthcare providers to ward off burnout. The arts intervention took place over three sessions: one at a museum, one virtual, and one at a hospital. Four types of data were collected including a quantitative pre- and post-survey, observation …

Now You Have It, Now You Don’T: Taxing Crypto, Part 1, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

The latest rise in the value of bitcoin has rekindled the debate on whether cryptocurrencies perform a useful function. For example, a recent article in the Financial Times argued: Have we learnt the lessons from the disastrous 2022 crash in digital assets? To judge from recent action in the crypto market, the answer appears to be no. Since hitting bottom after FTX collapsed into bankruptcy with a $9bn-ish hole in its balance sheet in November 2022, crypto market values have roughly tripled. Bitcoin’s price rose above $70,000 this week to touch record highs. A new wave of enthusiasm is growing, …

Are Women The Silver Bullet? Understanding Women’S Perceptions Of Gun Reform And Red Flag Laws In The United States, Emmeline Farwell Jun 2024

Are Women The Silver Bullet? Understanding Women’S Perceptions Of Gun Reform And Red Flag Laws In The United States, Emmeline Farwell

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines women’s perceptions of gun reform policies and how they can be used as a measure to predict how women could potentially view specific gun reform policies like red flag laws. Specific policies like the assault weapons ban and red flag laws are becoming increasingly common, practical measures to reduce gun violence, but little academic research has been done on them. Using data from the 2022 Congressional Election Survey conducted by the University of Texas at Austin University, I use several linear regressions to ascertain how one’s gender affects feelings or support for gun reform generally and for …

Star Power: An Analysis Of Digital Astrology Content As An Instrument Of Political Tractability, Aliza Phillips Jun 2024

Star Power: An Analysis Of Digital Astrology Content As An Instrument Of Political Tractability, Aliza Phillips

Comparative Literature M.A. Essays

In an essay from 1953 titled, The Stars Down to Earth, Theodor Adorno performed an exacting analysis of the weekly horoscopes published in The Los Angeles Times to illuminate the latent authoritarianism embedded in the rhetoric of astrology. One of Adorno’s primary arguments is that an insidious form of political tractability is forged through the simultaneous determinism and individualism of astrology. Seventy years after The Stars Down to Earth, the genre of short-form astrology videos has skyrocketed in popularity across social media platforms. This essay offers a series of close readings of digital astrology videos to theorize both …

Ford Madox Ford’S Unusual War: Ongoing Worry And Modernity, Nur Karatas Jun 2024

Ford Madox Ford’S Unusual War: Ongoing Worry And Modernity, Nur Karatas

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In Parade’s End, Ford Madox Ford approaches the experience of trauma in an unusual way—it is no longer just past experiences, but the expectancy of dismal events that become as traumatic. Ford chooses worry for such rendering. In order to make the correlation between suffering and sensibility, he places worry in the lives of his characters, which reflects on Ford’s own life. This discussion will introduce the idea that worry is going to be a major component of Ford’s psychologising of war. I explore this worry-driven sensibility and the ways it is reflected, especially in the characters’ obsession with the …

Early Threads Of Connection. Probing Infants' Understanding Of Caregiving Relationships, Christina Steele, Megan Richardson, Denis Tatone, Ashley Thomas Jun 2024

Early Threads Of Connection. Probing Infants' Understanding Of Caregiving Relationships, Christina Steele, Megan Richardson, Denis Tatone, Ashley Thomas

School of Psychology

Despite the centrality of caregiving relationships in the lives of infants, little is known about whether and how infants represent these relationships characterized by strong attachment and asymmetry in obligation and skills. The current studies (N=95) investigate whether 8-to-10-month-old infants attend to two cues‚Äîaffiliative touch and physical size‚Äîto predict who will respond to distress. In Study 1 (n=49), infants expected larger characters to respond to the emotional needs of smaller characters, only when they saw affiliative touch (proportion looking time at large character: BF10=6.72). In Study 2 (n=46), they did not expect smaller characters to respond to larger characters (proportion …

Infants Expect An Agent To Choose A Goal That Can Be Reached At A Lower Cost, Laura Schingloff-Nemecz, Denis Tatone, Barbara Pomiechowska, Gergely Csibra Jun 2024

Infants Expect An Agent To Choose A Goal That Can Be Reached At A Lower Cost, Laura Schingloff-Nemecz, Denis Tatone, Barbara Pomiechowska, Gergely Csibra

School of Psychology

According to prominent accounts of early actionunderstanding, infants’ interpretation of others’ actions isundergirded by an assumption of utility maximization. However, it is unclear whether this assumption applies only toselection among actions or also to selection among goals. Here, using an eye-tracking paradigm, we investigated whether 14-to 16-month-old infants would predict an agent to choose alower-cost option when faced with two identical outcomes thatcould be reached at different costs. Infants directed more looksto the lower-cost option, and this effect was not merely due tovisual saliency. These findings corroborate the proposal thatinfants rely on utility maximization when reasoning about anagent’s likely goal and provide …

The Importance Of Sunni-Iraqi Support In The Rise And Fall Of Isis In Iraq, Deja Meekins Jun 2024

The Importance Of Sunni-Iraqi Support In The Rise And Fall Of Isis In Iraq, Deja Meekins

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

ISIS, a Salafi-jihadist terrorist organization stationed in the Middle East, has had its fair share of "successes" and "failures," both of which have been present in Iraq. Toward the beginning of the development of ISIS, it garnered a very powerful supporter base in Iraq. However, that has changed since then; ISIS currently, in 2024, no longer has the support of the vast majority of the Iraqi people. What is the reason for this? This research paper will seek to analyze and answer two major questions: what role does the Iraqi Sunni population play in ISIS’s trajectory of successes and failures …

Do Elections Really Have Consequences?: Presidential Indifference, Attenuated Accountability, And Policy Paralysis Within The Administrative State, Ronald J. Krotoszynski Jr. Jun 2024

Do Elections Really Have Consequences?: Presidential Indifference, Attenuated Accountability, And Policy Paralysis Within The Administrative State, Ronald J. Krotoszynski Jr.

Georgia Law Review

In theory, the Constitution vests all, not “some” or “most,” of the executive power in the President; the buck supposedly stops at the Resolute Desk. Yet current practice falls well short of this constitutional ideal. The conjunction of fixed terms of office, good cause removal limits, and partisan balance requirements for the heads of multi-member independent federal agencies, boards, and commissions can and does leave critically important federal agencies effectively unaccountable to the President. Such a state of affairs existed at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from January 20, 2021, until September 25, 2023—over half of President Biden’s fouryear term …

Can The Automated State Be Trusted? The Role Of Rule Of Law Safeguards For Governing Automated Decision-Making And Artificial Intelligence, Joanna Mazur, Maciej Bernatt Jun 2024

Can The Automated State Be Trusted? The Role Of Rule Of Law Safeguards For Governing Automated Decision-Making And Artificial Intelligence, Joanna Mazur, Maciej Bernatt

Georgia Law Review

The goal of this Article is to take a broader perspective on the lessons which can be learned from the implementation of automated decision-making in the public sector—specifically in regard to how procedural rule of law mechanisms can make such projects trustworthy. The underlying idea behind this Article is to posit the debate about the ADM within the context of rule of law as a key notion in liberal democracies. At the same time, we rely on a law and political economy framework. We look through the lens of power relations and assess to what extent selected procedural solutions governing …

Resilient Administrative Technology, Stefanie Egidy Jun 2024

Resilient Administrative Technology, Stefanie Egidy

Georgia Law Review

Decision-making in the administrative state increasingly relies on automated information processing. Yet administrative law has not kept pace. This creates a need for an institutional redesign of decision-making processes under the conditions of digitization and presents a window of opportunity to discuss the normative pillars of a renewed architecture for administrative decision-making. Automation creates an impetus for administrative actors to broaden their perspective from making singular, deterministic, and individual decisions to adopting a pluralist, probabilistic, and generalized approach to address any underlying more complex and dynamic problems. Therefore, this Article argues that the conventional normative goals of efficacy, efficiency, and …

Automated Decision-Making And Review Of Administrative Decisions, Margaret Allars Jun 2024

Automated Decision-Making And Review Of Administrative Decisions, Margaret Allars

Georgia Law Review

The use of automated decision-making (ADM) carries an enhanced risk of failure to meet administrative law standards. This Article identifies Australian federal statutory schemes for ADM and instances of non-statutory use of ADM, with a view to evaluating the scope for the risk to be realized. Express provisions for correction of error, internal review avenues, and external review by tribunals and courts may not deliver satisfactory solutions. Despite a promising start, review and reform of the regulation of ADM use has lagged. However, in 2023, the Report of the Royal Commission into Robodebt gave the issue renewed impetus, recommending statutory …

Built Binary: Rethinking The Incarceration Of Transgender Individuals Within A Dual-Gendered Prison System, Amanda Graham Jun 2024

Built Binary: Rethinking The Incarceration Of Transgender Individuals Within A Dual-Gendered Prison System, Amanda Graham

Georgia Law Review

There are an estimated 1.6 million transgender individuals in the United States. Yet the nation’s prison systems have retained their traditional binary structure, separating male and female inmates. The federal Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) became effective in 2012, outlining best practices for the housing of transgender inmates. In recent years, there have been several court decisions that have directly and indirectly increased the protections available to transgender inmates. Many states have also passed legislation updating their prison policies to address these issues, but these measures have not been uniform. Some states have not yet adopted the PREA recommendations while …

Gratuitous Wealth: How Wealth Transfer Tax Avoidance Contributes To America's Unwinding, Robbie Ottley Jun 2024

Gratuitous Wealth: How Wealth Transfer Tax Avoidance Contributes To America's Unwinding, Robbie Ottley

Georgia Law Review

In an era of increasing economic concentration, ultrawealthy Americans overwhelmingly pay taxes at a lower rate than their fellow taxpayers. Using tax avoidance mechanisms, the ultrawealthy cling tightly to their wealth, worsening economic inequality. A particular culprit is the ultrawealthy’s avoidance of generational wealth transfer taxes through mechanisms like the grantor retained annuity trust, or GRAT. Since 2000, GRATs have exploded in use, and estimates of the tax avoided through this mechanism range from hundreds of billions to trillions of dollars. By exacerbating economic inequality, GRATs and other transfer tax avoidance mechanisms accelerate the socioeconomic and cultural fracturing that has …

Embodying Whole Community Preparedness: A Case Study Of Student-Facing Preparedness Initiatives At Institutions Of Higher Education In The State Of Oregon, Francis Pastorelle

Dissertations and Theses

Over the last two decades, there has been a dramatic increase in natural and manmade disasters. While no community is immune to the risks posed by these large-scale emergencies, colleges, and universities, which are home to numerous vulnerable populations, could be counted among those most at risk. In their current state of overall community preparedness, campuses are not equipped to weather impending dangers; consequently, the impact on students could be disastrous. This study examined preparedness practices at Oregon colleges and universities to better understand how institutions of higher education in the state prepare their students for large-scale emergencies, what challenges …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Threat-response neural circuits are conserved across species and play roles in normal behavior and psychiatric diseases. Maladaptive changes in these neural circuits contribute to stress, mood, and anxiety disorders. Active coping in response to stressors is a psychosocial factor associated with resilience against stress-induced mood and anxiety disorders. The neural circuitry underlying active coping is poorly understood, but the functioning of these circuits could be key for overcoming anxiety and related disorders. The supramammillary nucleus (SuM) has been suggested to be engaged by threat. SuM has many projections and a poorly understood diversity of neural populations. In studies using mice, …

Generalized Genetic Liability To Substance Use Disorders, Alex P. Miller, Ryan Bogdan, Arpana Agrawal, Alexander S. Hatoum Jun 2024

Generalized Genetic Liability To Substance Use Disorders, Alex P. Miller, Ryan Bogdan, Arpana Agrawal, Alexander S. Hatoum

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Lifetime and temporal co-occurrence of substance use disorders (SUDs) is common and compared with individual SUDs is characterized by greater severity, additional psychiatric comorbidities, and worse outcomes. Here, we review evidence for the role of generalized genetic liability to various SUDs. Coaggregation of SUDs has familial contributions, with twin studies suggesting a strong contribution of additive genetic influences undergirding use disorders for a variety of substances (including alcohol, nicotine, cannabis, and others). GWAS have documented similarly large genetic correlations between alcohol, cannabis, and opioid use disorders. Extending these findings, recent studies have identified multiple genomic loci that contribute to common …

Gender-Based Service Quality Evaluation Of Multimodal Public Transportation In Dki Jakarta, Mohammad Owais, Jachrizal Sumabrata, Nahry Yusuf

Smart City

In DKI Jakarta, despite the extensive infrastructure development, there has been a significant decline in the usage of public transportation. This can be attributed to the inadequate quality of the services provided. Various studies have highlighted the significance of evaluating the quality of service in public transportation to ensure passenger satisfaction and attract new users. However, there is no agreement on the most effective methodology and suitable indicators for conducting such analyses. In addition, there is a growing recognition of the importance of promoting gender equality in multimodal public transportation (MMPT) and understanding gender differences and perceptions of MMPT services. …

Transportation safety in Indonesia reflects its culture and modernity, but the high rate of traffic accidents indicates significant challenges. Data from IRSMS and Polda Metro Jaya reveal an increase in accidents and traffic violations, reinforcing the need for effective law enforcement. The implementation of ETLE, supported by Law No. 22 of 2009 on Road Traffic and Transportation and Law No. 19 of 2016 on Electronic Information and Transactions, is a strategic effort to improve law enforcement. However, its effectiveness in Jakarta context still requires in-depth evaluation. This thesis focuses on the psychological factors in the use of ETLE using the …

This study investigates how fragrance could affect staff efficiency at work in the service industry, particularly insurance agents. Scent is recognised to affect human behavior and perception; nevertheless, the majority of study to date has overlooked scent's possible impact on job performance in favor of focusing on its relationship to confidence and beauty. We will explore whether wearing perfume improves work performance through a panel study with 100 insurance agents. Performance is gauged by the number of policies sold and the amount of premium generated. Our study proposes to investigate the potential significant impact of perfume, both positive and negative, …
