Social And Cultural Factors Beyond Washback Of The National Examination: Exploring The Impact Of High-Stakes Testing In Indonesian Secondary Schools From Teachers’ Experiences And Sociocultural Factors, Maya Puspitasari

The Qualitative Report

This article investigates the conditions that cause a negative washback impact on English as language teaching (ELT) in Indonesian secondary schools. I interviewed eight English teachers to learn about the factors influencing their pedagogical choices for the test. This research draws on the literature of washback research and empirical evidence for the notion that contextual factors and external social cultural elements may have a significant role in defining the form of washback. Emphasizing the causal relationship concerning instruction and testing may be unduly simplified if it only covers its washback effect on the teachers and their teaching practices. High-stakes testing …

Humanizing The Research Process: Collaborative Reflections On Prioritizing Research Participants’ Agency, Trust, And Connection, Anne E. Pezalla, Alyssa Scott, Lex Nappa, Diane Hsieh Jun 2024

Humanizing The Research Process: Collaborative Reflections On Prioritizing Research Participants’ Agency, Trust, And Connection, Anne E. Pezalla, Alyssa Scott, Lex Nappa, Diane Hsieh

The Qualitative Report

All research is a social construction. In this paper, we work to illuminate those moments of co-constructed meaning by taking readers on a “behind the scenes” tour of a collaborative research project that explored educator relationships. We describe our priorities in and care for participant recruitment and scheduling, our post-hoc reflections on the differences in emotional tenor between interviews and focus groups, and our own roles and positionalities within the data collection and analysis process. Action-items are recommended for other group-based qualitative studies to humanize the process of research and prioritize moments of agency, trust, and connection among participants.

Cost-Effectiveness And Threshold Analysis Of Deep Brain Stimulation Vs Treatment-As-Usual For Treatment-Resistant Depression, Himanshu Sharma, Nicole R Provenza, Benjamin Y Hayden, Sanjay J Mathew, Sameer A Sheth Jun 2024

Cost-Effectiveness And Threshold Analysis Of Deep Brain Stimulation Vs Treatment-As-Usual For Treatment-Resistant Depression, Himanshu Sharma, Nicole R Provenza, Benjamin Y Hayden, Sanjay J Mathew, Sameer A Sheth

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) affects approximately 2.8 million people in the U.S. with estimated annual healthcare costs of $43.8 billion. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is currently an investigational intervention for TRD. We used a decision-analytic model to compare cost-effectiveness of DBS to treatment-as-usual (TAU) for TRD. Because this therapy is not FDA approved or in common use, our goal was to establish an effectiveness threshold that trials would need to demonstrate for this therapy to be cost-effective. Remission and complication rates were determined from review of relevant studies. We used published utility scores to reflect quality of life after treatment. Medicare …

Pediatric Obesity In The United States: Age–Period–Cohort Analysis, Ashley W. Kranjac, Dinko Kranjac, Roxanne I. Aguilera Jun 2024

Pediatric Obesity In The United States: Age–Period–Cohort Analysis, Ashley W. Kranjac, Dinko Kranjac, Roxanne I. Aguilera

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

The rates of obesity among American children aged 2–5 years has reached a historic high. It is crucial to identify the putative sources of population-level increases in obesity prevalence among preschool-aged children because early childhood is a critical window for obesity prevention and thus reduction of future incidence. We used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data and hierarchical age–period–cohort analysis to examine lifecycle (i.e., age), historical (i.e., period), and generational (i.e., cohort) distribution of age- and sex-specific body mass index z-scores (zBMI) among 2–5-year-olds in the U.S. from 1999 to 2018. Our current findings indicate that period effects, …

The lungs play a vital role in supplying oxygen to every cell, filtering air to prevent harmful substances, and supporting defense mechanisms. However, they remain susceptible to the risk of diseases such as infections, inflammation, and cancer that affect the lungs. Meta-ensemble techniques are prominent methods used in machine learning to enhance the accuracy of classifier learning systems in making predictions. This work proposes a robust predictive model using a meta-ensemble method to identify high-risk individuals with lung cancer, thereby taking early action to prevent long-term problems benchmarked upon the Kaggle Machine Learning practitioners' Lung Cancer Dataset. Three machine learning …

The Rise And Fall Of Seven Arts Magazine, Mary Clare Sisk, Sara Houska, Colleen Kehoe, Phoebe Ludwig

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

We have dedicated this presentation to the short, but prolific and rich lifespan of a little magazine that called for pacifism during World War I. The epistolary relationship between poet Amy Lowell and The Seven Arts founder James Oppenheim provides a firsthand account of how the war impacted the literary world and why Oppenheim’s April 1917 magazine issue led to its swift downfall.

Intersections Project, Mckenzie Gallivan

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Latine and immigrant-origin youth are disproportionately susceptible to experiencing challenges like anti-immigrant rhetoric and racial microaggressions and are also more likely to experience poverty. The current study aims to better understand immigrant teens' experiences with the five social-emotional competencies (SECs). Survey and interview data were collected from ninth graders from an ethnically and racially diverse high school. Bivariate correlations indicated that teens with a stronger sense of ethnic identity and better self-regulation skills displayed better relationship skills. Interestingly, stronger ethnic identity and self-regulation were also related to more social awareness (e.g., sociopolitical efficacy). The links above were in the positive …

“Private Paths To Peace” Examining The Role Of The Private Sector In Peacebuilding Through Disarmament, Demobilization, And Reintegration In Northern Ireland, Chicago, And Colombia, Michael Clausen

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

International efforts to end protracted conflicts have included sustained investments in combatants' disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR). While policy analysts have discussed factors that contribute to successful programs and have reasoned about the macro conditions that facilitate peacebuilding, there is limited information surrounding the factors that account for successful reintegration at the community level. This project considers the impact of entrepreneurship by communities and formerly incarcerated individuals on peaceful coexistence and focuses on DDR from the perspective of Chicago’s 77 official Community Areas.

El Big Model Como Herramienta De Análisis Y Diagnóstico, Martín Van Houtte, Damián Fraustro

Journal of Roleplaying Studies and STEAM

Placing Student Success And Well-Being At The Center Of The Educational Process: How The Magic City Acceptance Academy Promotes An Ethical And Caring School Culture, D. Keith Gurley, Dwayne White, Matthew Fifolt Dr.

Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education

Schools and school leaders are well-positioned to create school cultures that are supportive of all students, including students who identify as LGBTQ and those who are perceived as other due to status of race, class, or ability. The purpose of this phenomenological case study was to explore how faculty and staff at the Magic City Acceptance Academy (MCAA) promote an ethical and caring school culture. To guide our thinking and interpretation of research findings, our team relied on two conceptual frameworks, including queer theory and the ethical educational leadership framework ethic of care. Based on inductive coding of focus …

Safe Space As Resistance For Black Women Student-Athletes, Tomika Ferguson

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

College athletes have increased participation in activism to combat racial injustice. Historically White institutions have been sites of marginalization and exclusion for Black women college athletes. This article interrogates how activism among Black women college athletes is an opportunity to disrupt oppressive higher education and athletic environments to create sustainable change. First, this article reviews literature that illustrates how Black women college athlete navigate higher education. Second, the article identifies how place, race, gender, and space within higher education exclude and limit Black women college athletes. Third, this article examines the intersection of activism and Black feminist thought within college …

Athlete Activism Through A Bioecological Lens: An Asset-Based Approach To Exploring Athletes’ Moral Development, Daniel Springer, Molly Harry, Wayne L. Black, Jonathan E. Howe

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

Since the onset of the global pandemic, there has been a sharp rise in Division I college athletes using their platforms to address inequity in college athletics. While it is unclear what factors are shaping this trend, understanding why college athletes engage in activism is imperative to better support them as they lean further into this practice. Accordingly, this manuscript seeks to outline a framework for examining activism in and through college sport over time, space, and context by utilizing Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological Process-Person-Context-Time Model. Examining athlete activism provides a mechanism to consider the way power, privilege, and oppression impact athletes’ …

College Athlete Activism: A Critical Race Theory Analysis Of Perceptions Of Support In The Fight For Social Justice, Molly Harry Jun 2024

College Athlete Activism: A Critical Race Theory Analysis Of Perceptions Of Support In The Fight For Social Justice, Molly Harry

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

Through three tenets of Critical Race Theory (CRT)—racism is ordinary, counter narratives, and commitment to social justice—this study surveyed athletes (n = 100) from one Power 5 conference on their perceptions of administrator and coach support received for their activism endeavors in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. Overall, most athletes surveyed perceived administrators and coaches supported their efforts by encouraging them to engage in activism, providing educational resources about race and activism, creating a respectful environment, and offering verbal encouragement. However, some athletes expressed athletics leaders did not do enough to bolster their activism or did not know of …

A Framework For Understanding Internal Athlete Activism In College Sport, Jessica K. Brougham, Christopher M. Mcleod Jun 2024

A Framework For Understanding Internal Athlete Activism In College Sport, Jessica K. Brougham, Christopher M. Mcleod

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

Most research on athlete activism has focused on external athlete activism, where high-profile athletes use broadcast media or social media platforms to engage in activism. This paper draws from organizational behavior literature and Cooper et al.’s (2019) operational definition of activism to conceptualize internal athlete activism. Athletes perform internal athlete activism through formal or informal organizational channels with the explicit goal of challenging organizational power structures to advance social justice aims. Internal athlete activism is characterized by 1) internal, upward voice, 2) prosocial intent, 3) a clear opponent, 4) challenging power structures, 5) specific goals or measurable objectives, 6) connection …
