Gatekeeping In Online Learning: Best Practices To Facilitate Non-Traditional Learning, Amanda Faucher, Ajitha Chandrika Prasanna Kumaran, Wannigar Ratanavivan
Gatekeeping In Online Learning: Best Practices To Facilitate Non-Traditional Learning, Amanda Faucher, Ajitha Chandrika Prasanna Kumaran, Wannigar Ratanavivan
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Online learning has evolved, bringing several opportunities and challenges to counselor educators. Gatekeeping is an ethical responsibility of counselor educators, especially in a distance education platform, to evaluate personal and professional growth of counselors-in-training. To minimize gateslipping, there is working literature evidence that looks quite different in an online platform. In a synchronous setting, technology allows us to offer an experience that is not drastically different from traditional learning, but literature on asynchronous learning is far more limited. The authors will highlight the strengths and challenges of gatekeeping in a distance learning environment and discuss potential strategies for gatekeeping to …

Building Competence: Trainee Counselors’ Supervision Journey With Self-Injury And Suicidality, Rachel Jacoby, Karen M. Roller, Latoya Smith, Shreya Vaishnav, Tasmeer Ali
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
This grounded theory study examines the supervision needs of counselors-in-training (CITs) addressing clients with non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal ideations. The qualitative research question focused on counselor-in-training perception of their counseling program and practicum supervision preparation. Four key themes emerge: Supervision Facilitation, Secure Base Provision, Clinical Identity Development, and Sufficient Preparation. CITs express readiness concerns and a need for enhanced support in supervision for NSSI and SI. CITs also clarify logistical and emotional support that addresses their needs to serve NSSI and SI clients effectively.
The Wicked Problem Of Climate Change And The Challenge Of Engagement: Exploring Educational Approaches And Possibilities For Information Literacy, Andrea Baer
Libraries Scholarship
Climate change is a prime example of a “wicked problem”: it is characterized by complexity and unboundedness and has no complete or simple solutions, though communities can develop constructive interventions that address particular aspects of the problem (for example, in cities increasing green spaces that have a cooling effect). Because the problem of climate change is so expansive and the answers to it remain limited in scope and impact, engaging with the topic inevitably evokes difficult emotions like uncertainty, overwhelm, despair, and grief. So it is understandable that a common response to the realities of climate change has been denial …

Mri Measurement Of Cerebral Perfusion In Severe Congenital Heart Disease: Just The First Step, Kevin B. Kilgallon, Ira M. Cheifetz
Faculty Scholarship
Two questions on the mind of many parents of children with complex congenital heart disease (CHD) are: Will my child survive? And, how will their life be affected? As diagnostic procedures, along with medical and surgical treatments, for these infants have improved over the recent decades, more and more of these children are surviving into adolescence and adulthood. Despite these advances in care, children with complex CHD are at higher risk of neurodevelopmental disability (NDD) and decreased quality of life (QOL) compared to their peers without CHD.1,2

Medial Temporal Lobe Surface Features And Cognition In Aging Amyloid-Positive Individuals, Jacob Johnston
Medial Temporal Lobe Surface Features And Cognition In Aging Amyloid-Positive Individuals, Jacob Johnston
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Memory consolidation and metabolism are known to differ between amyloid-beta plaque positive (A+) and negative (A-) amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (aMCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia participants despite similar medial temporal lobe (MTL) volume between groups. Using high-dimensional surface analysis (shape characterization), this study identified structural differences in the medial temporal lobe between A+ aMCI, A+ AD dementia, and amyloid-negative (A-) healthy control groups (CON), specifically in the CA1 and subiculum regions of the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex. Additionally, regional brain surface-based features were correlated with procedural and episodic memory measures, finding positive associations between CA1 integrity and episodic memory …
Rural, K-12 East Tennessee School Principals’ Perceptions Of Principal Preparation Programs And Ongoing Professional Development Opportunities, Whitney Butler
Rural, K-12 East Tennessee School Principals’ Perceptions Of Principal Preparation Programs And Ongoing Professional Development Opportunities, Whitney Butler
Ed.D. Dissertations
There were concerns in both quantity and quality of principal candidates regarding training experiences and principals being prepared to lead schools. Research was limited when it came to principal preparation programs (PPPs) training rural, East Tennessee school principals to become instructional leaders and school district leaders providing ongoing professional development opportunities for rural principals. Due to the overall lack of research regarding these facets, further research was necessary to understand how PPPs advisors and school district leaders needed to better prepare rural school principals to lead instructionally. Twenty rural school principals responded to a questionnaire regarding principals’ perceptions of PPPs …

Researchers are rapidly developing and deploying highly portable MRI technology to conduct field-based research. The new technology will widen access to include new investigators in remote and unconventional settings and will facilitate greater inclusion of rural, economically disadvantaged, and historically underrepresented populations. To address the ethical, legal, and societal issues raised by highly accessible and portable MRI, an interdisciplinary Working Group (WG) engaged in a multi-year structured process of analysis and consensus building, informed by empirical research on the perspectives of experts and the general public. This article presents the WG’s consensus recommendations. These recommendations address technology quality control, design …

Greater exposure to stressors over the life course is believed to promote striatum-dependent over hippocampus-dependent learning and memory processes under stressful conditions. However, little research in this context has actually assessed lifetime stressor exposure and, moreover, it remains unknown whether greater cumulative lifetime stressor exposure exerts comparable effects on striatum-dependent learning and hippocampus-dependent learning in non-stressful contexts. To investigate this issue, we used the Stress and Adversity Inventory for Adults (Adult STRAIN) and Multicued Search Task to investigate the relation between cumulative lifetime stressor exposure and striatum-dependent stimulus–response learning and hippocampus-dependent contextual learning under non-stressful conditions among healthcare professionals (N …
Commercial Property Vacancies In American Cities, Emily Dinh
Commercial Property Vacancies In American Cities, Emily Dinh
University Honors Theses
This paper examines the alarming impacts of the vacancy phenomenon on commercial properties across American during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The increase in remote work encourages people to work from home more frequently. This does not only lessen employees' foot traffic to offices, but also disconnects the engagement of consumers and visitors to public areas, such as malls, stores, and other amenities. Many commercial properties have closed, shrunk their operating spaces, or reallocated for safety and security reasons. Reduction in occupancy rate among mentioned properties influences negatively on business owners, their associated partners, residents of the impacted areas, and …
Repetitive Thinking, Social Connectedness, And Distressing Sexual Experiences In Autistic And Non-Autistic Students: Examining Social-Cognitive Risk Factors And Mental Health During The College Transition, Erin Elizabeth Mckenney
Repetitive Thinking, Social Connectedness, And Distressing Sexual Experiences In Autistic And Non-Autistic Students: Examining Social-Cognitive Risk Factors And Mental Health During The College Transition, Erin Elizabeth Mckenney
Theses and Dissertations
The prevention and treatment of mental health concerns are consistently named among autistic adults’ highest clinical and research priorities. While several theories have been proposed to explain the high prevalence of depression and anxiety in autistic populations, virtually no longitudinal research has evaluated causal mechanisms. The first study in this dissertation aims to explore how known contributors to depression and anxiety identified by general population research – namely, rumination, dissatisfaction with social connectedness, and distressing sexual experiences – relate to the development of internalizing symptoms in autistic individuals during the transition to college. The second study explores potential contributors to …
Prison Social Organization: Applying Social Psychology To Explain Racial Grouping In Prison, Siobhan Wynn
Prison Social Organization: Applying Social Psychology To Explain Racial Grouping In Prison, Siobhan Wynn
University Honors Theses
Since the creation of the United States, minorities have been controlled through various laws and practices such as slavery, Black Codes, Vagrancy Laws, and Jim Crow Laws. While these laws have been abolished, minorities in the United States are still being controlled in various areas such as the criminal justice system. This thesis will examine how certain codes in prisons have controlled Adults in Custody (AICs), in addition to examining two theories: Uncertain Identity Theory and Intergroup Threat Theory to help explain the social psychological functions of how and why racial grouping in prisons happen.
You, Me, And The Unknown: A Creative Exploration Into The Emotions We Feel About What We Don't Understand, Lena Hall
University Honors Theses
I've always found the concept of fear and anxiety to be incredibly fascinating. As someone who grew up with extreme anxiety, I always wanted to rationalize it and figure out exactly why I felt that way. Anxiety is the inherent fear of the unknown and I wanted to know more about why we fear what we don't understand, or in other cases, why we love it. I conducted a research project on our perceptions of the unknown that resulted in an experimental page layout print publication where I shared the participant's views on the unknown through a visual storytelling medium.
Teaching Resilience In Pacific Islander Children Through Culturally Adapted Stories, Isabel Medina Hull
Teaching Resilience In Pacific Islander Children Through Culturally Adapted Stories, Isabel Medina Hull
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the efficacy of culturally adapted bibliotherapy in promoting resilience among American Samoan children aged 5-13 years in response to high adolescent suicide rates in the Pacific Islands and the need for culturally adapted and supportive interventions grounded in mental health wellness. Bibliotherapy, particularly the identification with story characters, has been recognized for bolstering mental wellness, resilience, and emotional regulation in children. In this research, the children's response to bibliotherapy was measured through card sorting and forced-choice exercises, assessing their engagement with literature mirroring their experiences. The materials were developed in collaboration with Samoan cultural brokers on island …

Mexican American Men Who Have Sex With Men: Cultural Factors And Substance Use, Michael L. Garcia
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research has shown substance use affects sexual minority communities disproportionately. Studies have shown when individuals are part of ethnic or sexual minority groups, negative attitudes and risk behaviors that can lead to substance use are experienced at a greater scale compared to their majority counterparts. There have not been significant investigations regarding relationships between cultural values and sexual and ethnic minority subpopulations within the United States. The purpose of this quantitative study was to identify relationships between religion, family structure, traditional gender roles, and substance use in terms of Mexican American men who have sex with men (MAMSM) populations. This …

Global Advertising Messages For Cosmopolitan Consumers To Promote Green Buying Behavior: A Cross-Country Investigation, Sandra S. Graça, Virginie P. Kharé
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
This study empirically tests a conceptual model of the impact of cosmopolitan orientation on green buying behavior in the U.S., Brazil, and Germany. The following were examined: relationships between a consumer’s global versus local identity, cosmopolitan orientation, and preference for a global framing of advertising messages for a green product, as well as the influence of a consumer’s cosmopolitan orientation on pro-environmental factors that ultimately contribute to greater intention and willingness to purchase green products. Data were collected through a self-administered online survey. Correlations and regression analysis were used to analyze the data, and structural equation modeling was used to …

Factors That Encourage Or Inhibit Faculty Participation In Development Activities: A Case Study, Kim Kirby
Factors That Encourage Or Inhibit Faculty Participation In Development Activities: A Case Study, Kim Kirby
Theses and Dissertations
As scrutiny increases on higher education to verify the value of a degree from a variety of constituents including parents, students and legislators, institutions of higher education must ensure students are receiving a sound education that meets their goals. Those primarily charged with doing so are faculty who may be content experts, but lack the pedagogical training to provide appropriate instruction. Faculty development is seen as a means to address that disconnect. However, offering quality development is not effective if the faculty is not motivated to engage in those offerings. This study examines the factors that encourage or inhibit faculty …
Early Childhood Educators’ Perceptions Of Practicum And Its Relationship To Self-Efficacy In Teaching, Terri Gray Johnson
Early Childhood Educators’ Perceptions Of Practicum And Its Relationship To Self-Efficacy In Teaching, Terri Gray Johnson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Limited research exists on the factors that contribute to community college students’ development of self-efficacy (SE) while serving as preservice teachers (PSTs) during their early childhood education (ECE) practicum. This lack of research is concerning because educators who have high SE enhance the educational well-being of all children. The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences in practicum that early childhood educators perceive contribute to the development of SE among PSTs. The conceptual framework was derived from Bandura’s theory of SE. The focus of the research questions was on understanding the development of SE during practicum experiences and …

During the rapid spread of the coronavirus in 2020, some hospital managers lacked strategies to support and treat the number of patients falling ill daily. Effective strategies to support and treat patients during the next pandemic are important to hospital managers because insufficient access to quality healthcare services can be harmful to community citizens and detrimental to hospital sustainability. Grounded in the resource-based theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to explore strategies some hospital managers have created and implemented to be prepared for future pandemics within their facilities. The participants were six healthcare leaders working in roles …
