“The Best Co I’Ve Ever Served Under”: Lieutenant-Colonel Bert Kennedy And Removal From Battalion Command In The Second World War, Matthew Barrett, Norma Graham
Canadian Military History
Lieutenant-Colonel Albert A. Kennedy’s war service could be lifted from the pages of a suspense novel, an action-adventure story and a courtroom drama. He bravely served as commanding officer of the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment in Italy, where he led from the front, earned the Distinguished Service Order and for a time was even held as a prisoner of war. His command of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada in North West Europe, by contrast, ended in a confidential report and charges of alleged conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline. We examine Kennedy’s Second World War experiences …

“A True Sailor-Statesman”—The Ethical Quandary Of Ambassador Raymond A. Spruance In The Philippines, Andrew K. Blackley
Naval War College Review
After retiring from the Navy, Admiral Raymond A. Spruance took on the role of U.S. ambassador to the Philippines. Thomas Buell, a prominent Spruance biographer, previously has claimed that Spruance’s involvement in the 1953 Philippine presidential election was ethically questionable, a perspective challenged by new research.

The Cognitive Dimension Of Mobilization—Reconsidering American War Preparation In An Age Of Persistent Cognitive Warfare, Robert "Jake" Bebber
Naval War College Review
American war mobilization doctrine is built on an industrial-era paradigm that assumes the primary contest is material: who can most efficiently convert economic capacity into military power. An evaluation suggests that this paradigm, while necessary, is no longer sufficient.

Incivility And Toxicity In Occupational Therapy Academic Environments, Sharon Gutman, Sandra Rogers, Rondalyn V. Whitney
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Toxicity in the academic environment is defined as an insidious form of behavior that is characterized by overt negativity with the intent to cause harm and includes bullying, manipulation, gas lighting, discrimination, preferential treatment, and ostracization. Reasons accounting for the existence of toxicity in academia include long-standing cultural norms of competition for scarce resources, devaluing of collaboration, unrealistic workload expectations and benchmarks for success, a milieu of excessive and negative critique, low salaries and professional rewards, and a hierarchical ranking system that encourages abuse of power without consequences. The impact of toxicity in academia on occupational therapy faculty include high …

The Interrelation Between Technology And Art In ``Brave New World'' And ``Never Let Me Go'', Nubar Aghalarova
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper examines the role of technology and art in dystopian literature and their interrelation in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go (2005). Both dystopian novels depict the societies where technological advancements profoundly influence and control human life, creativity, and individuality. In Brave New World, technology is used to control and dehumanize individuals and to achieve social stability. Art is limited to suppress humans' emotions and self-expression as the world controllers want to do everything that they can erase the past. In Never Let Me Go, technology plays an important role in …

Emotional Vs. Informational Framing And Campaign Reach In Crowdfunding: Evidence From 15,901 For-Profit And Charitable Campaigns On Kickstarter And Kiva, Marco Trotta
Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research
Crowdfunding campaigns rely heavily on how they tell their story. This study asks whether the emotional tone of a campaign description shapes how many backers it attracts, and whether that relationship looks different for for-profit campaigns compared to charitable ones. This paper analyzed 15,901 campaigns drawn from Kickstarter and Kiva, classifying each description as either emotional or informational and measuring reach by backer count.
The results are consistent across both campaign types. For-profit campaigns using emotional language had roughly 11.6% fewer backers than their informational counterparts. Emotional charitable campaigns also underperformed, attracting about 13.6% fewer backers relative to the informational …

Climate Change, Governance Failure, And Violent Insurgency In Cabo Delgado, Hala Thabet
Climate Change, Governance Failure, And Violent Insurgency In Cabo Delgado, Hala Thabet
All Works
Contemporary literature increasingly links rising levels of armed violence in several African countries to the repercussions of climate change, particularly long-term environmental stresses such as the deterioration of agricultural livelihoods, resource scarcity, and recurrent climate shocks. However, this study argues that the relationship between climate change and violence is not an inevitable causal one, but can be understood as the result of the intersection of the failure of the post-independence nation-building project and the impacts of climate change on livelihoods and economic security. In Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique, repeated climate shocks and the resulting deterioration of coastal agriculture and …
