When We Feel Maxed Out: Increasing Human Capacity Across Four Domains, Erica Skarda Ramey Jul 2026

When We Feel Maxed Out: Increasing Human Capacity Across Four Domains, Erica Skarda Ramey

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

The experience of being “maxed out” reflects depletion across emotional, cognitive, physical, and relational domains that collectively determine human capacity. Nurses frequently encounter this state in themselves, colleagues, and patients, where exhaustion and stress diminish coping and resilience. Emerging evidence demonstrates that recovery requires more than time or reduced workload; deliberate engagement in evidence-based practices produces measurable improvement across domains.

This paper introduces a multidimensional framework for human capacity and synthesizes recent findings linking mindfulness, cognitive training, physical conditioning, and social connection with improved well-being. The review identifies five common misconceptions that obstruct recovery—beliefs that time alone restores capacity, that …

Perceived Cognitive Function And Continuous Glucose Monitor Use In Older Adults: A Qualitative Study, Heather E. Cuevas, Jeeyeon Kim

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

CGM is used to examine glucose data against reports of diabetes self-management (DMSM) behaviors, allowing characterization of biobehavioral processes.1 The inclusion of DMSM behaviors is crucial to a full understanding of the relationships between glucose variability and cognitive function.2,3 Unfortunately, only a few trials have evaluated the effectiveness of CGM in older adults with T2DM.4,5 Because older adults with T2DM are a heterogeneous group with variable functional and cognitive abilities, clinicians must consider whether each patient can use CGM and which CGM device that best fits patients' needs. The purpose of this project was to investigate how …

Ai-Powered Knowledge Engines As Research Infrastructure For Systematic Knowledge Discovery, Gary Welz Jul 2026

Ai-Powered Knowledge Engines As Research Infrastructure For Systematic Knowledge Discovery, Gary Welz

Publications and Research

This paper proposes knowledge engines as a framework for understanding how intelligent systems — both human and artificial — systematically discover, integrate, and generate knowledge. We argue that history’s greatest scientific minds functioned as knowledge engines, processing information through iterative cycles of ingestion, analysis, synthesis, and communication, guided by curiosity and willingness to challenge established beliefs.

We propose a taxonomy of nine integrated capabilities — ingestion, digestion, analysis, calculation, comparison, connection, association, analogy, and multimodal communication — that any serious knowledge engine must combine systematically. The argument is deliberately integrative: achieving ambitious research goals requires orchestrating all nine capabilities within …

From Burden To Support: Validating An Ai-Based Dementia Care Voice Assistant App, Modupe Akintomide, Xinyue Zhang, Divya Iyer, Madison Ellison, Sumaya Tamenne

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

The prevalence of behavioral symptoms, such as wandering and agitation, in over 90% of persons with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (Pw-ADRD), with approximately 83% residing in home-based settings [1-3], underscores the urgent need for effective interventions to support informal caregivers. These caregivers are essential for maintaining quality care for Pw-ADRD, yet they frequently encounter substantial challenges in managing behavioral symptoms [4], revealing a significant gap in available resources and support systems.

To address this gap, we developed a prototype for an AI-based Dementia Care Voice Assistant (AI-DECAVA), powered by a large language model (LLM). The system is designed to …

Ai-Powered Gamified Extended Reality Training For Dementia Care Competence In Healthcare Students, Modupe Akintomide, Joy Li, Toi-Ann Kingsby, Dandre Williamson

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

The development of dementia care competence among healthcare students remains limited by the scarcity of experiential training opportunities for managing behavioral and psychological symptoms [1]. Traditional curricula often fail to provide sufficient, high-fidelity practice for the complex, emotionally charged interactions characteristic of Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) care [2].

To address this gap, we developed an AI-powered, Gamified Extended Reality (XR) Dementia Behavioral Training App. This immersive platform simulates authentic caregiving encounters with persons living with ADRD. It employs an AI-generated animated patient agent and integrates adaptive difficulty scaling within clinically relevant, scenario-based modules to mirror the complexity of …

Can An Ai System Be Creative? A Critical Perspective From Art And Engineering, Ivan Magrin-Chagnolleau Jul 2026

Can An Ai System Be Creative? A Critical Perspective From Art And Engineering, Ivan Magrin-Chagnolleau

Presidential Fellows Articles and Research

This paper examines the question of whether artificial intelligence (AI) systems can be creative, approached from the dual perspective of a researcher trained in electrical engineering, pattern recognition, machine learning, and neural networks, who has also spent most of his life engaged in the arts as actor, stage and film director, writer, composer, and visual artist, and in philosophy. Drawing on Margaret Boden’s foundational framework — both her three properties of creativity (novelty, surprise, and value) and her three types of creative processes (combinatorial, exploratory, and transformational) — the paper argues that AI systems are structurally incapable of creativity in …

Leveraging Ai-Driven Financial Resource Identification In Dementia Caregiving-Development Phase, Modupe Akintomide, Xinyue Zhang, Divya Iyer

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Informal dementia caregiving imposes a substantial financial burden on families, compounded by systemic factors such as insurance coverage gaps, prohibitive long-term care costs, and the administrative complexity of navigating public and private benefit programs [1-2].

To address this challenge, we developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven application designed to streamline access to financial resources. The system is built on a curated dataset that links multidimensional caregiver profiles with relevant financial support programs. Profiles, encoded as input feature vectors, are derived from structured questionnaire responses capturing variables such as employment status, weekly caregiving hours, out-of-pocket medical expenses, and insurance coverage. Each profile …

Reality Check: How Avatar And Face Representation Affect The Perceptual Evaluation Of Synthesized Gestures, Haoyang Du, Yinghan Xu, John Dingliana, Brian Keegan, Rachel Mcdonnell, Cathy Ennis

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

The capacity to create realistic virtual humans has progressed significantly, and such characters can be found in many applications across entertainment, education and health. As an essential element of interactive virtual humans, speech-driven 3D gesture generation still depends heavily on perceptual evaluation, yet studies often vary avatar appearance and facial presentation when judging the generated motions. Prior work suggests these visual choices can bias motion judgments, but controlled evidence remains limited. We address this gap with controlled evaluations of co-speech gestures across motion sources, spanning seven representative avatar renderings used in contemporary research and application pipelines. Our results show that …

Animal Sentience

Strongly supportive overall of Birch’s broad tent Sentience Project, I offer an alternative dyadic, single-class, two-stage process based on estimating the probability for sentience, and the associated confidence, for any individual or taxonomic group. I criticize Birch’s narrow computational framework when addressing the question of algorithmic sentience; there are alternative approaches.

Visual-Motor Coordination In Automated Driving: Effects Of Temporal Urgency And Motor Demand On Intervention Behavior, Kailin Cui, Jonathan Chiu, Pranav Meda, Gaojian Huang, Yue Luo Jul 2026

Visual-Motor Coordination In Automated Driving: Effects Of Temporal Urgency And Motor Demand On Intervention Behavior, Kailin Cui, Jonathan Chiu, Pranav Meda, Gaojian Huang, Yue Luo

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Occupational Applications: This study shows that time-critical automation intervention requests increase drivers’ visual-motor demands, reflected in measurable changes in driving performance and posture (i.e., limb engagement and trunk positioning) during transitions of control. These responses indicate that maneuver urgency and takeover timing can place elevated biomechanical and coordination demands on drivers, particularly in work-based automated driving. For ergonomics and human factors practice, the findings underscore the need to design automated transportation systems (e.g., ridesharing services) that align request timing with operators’ physical and perceptual capabilities. In occupational settings such as automated shuttles and fleet-supervised vehicles, intervention requests should provide adequate …

Persistent Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy As A Chronic Cancer Pain Syndrome: Mechanisms, Therapeutic Limitations, And Future Directions, Reed Firestone, Jamin Morrison

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Background/Objectives: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common, dose-limiting complication of cancer therapy and a major contributor to chronic neuropathic pain among cancer survivors. Although traditionally managed as a treatment-related toxicity, persistent CIPN frequently persists long after chemotherapy completion and is increasingly recognized as a major survivorship and palliative care challenge. This review synthesizes current mechanistic, clinical, and translational evidence and reframes persistent CIPN as a chronic neuropathic cancer pain syndrome. Methods: A narrative review of peer-reviewed literature was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library, supplemented by manual review of key references and clinical guidelines. Emphasis was placed …

The Impact Of Yoga And Mindfulness Training On Reducing Ground-Based Separation Anxiety During High Apparatus Skills In Gymnastics, Zahraa Hazim Yuneus, Liqa' Abdulzahra Obaid, Hind Waleed Kalf, Hind Salem Tayeh Jul 2026

The Impact Of Yoga And Mindfulness Training On Reducing Ground-Based Separation Anxiety During High Apparatus Skills In Gymnastics, Zahraa Hazim Yuneus, Liqa' Abdulzahra Obaid, Hind Waleed Kalf, Hind Salem Tayeh

Modern Sport

Modern sports increasingly recognize psychological factors alongside physical performance. In gymnastics, emotional stability is critical, particularly for high-flying skills that involve significant heights, aerial spins, and precise landings. These demands make gymnasts vulnerable to fear, separation anxiety, and loss of control during flight, leading to hesitation, reduced confidence, and technical errors. The study aims to develop a training program integrating yoga and mindfulness to reduce ground-separation anxiety and improve high-altitude skill performance. The research hypothesizes statistically significant differences between pre- and post-tests in both anxiety levels and skill performance, favoring the post-test. An experimental methodology was adopted, with a purposive …

Spatial Identity In Transition: Revitalizing Surakarta’S Heritage Markets Through Community-Based Placemaking, Eko Nursanty, Sri Mulyani, I Wayan Andhika Widiantara, Arturo Galay Cauba

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Traditional markets are essential socio-cultural infrastructures in heritage cities, shaping everyday interactions, economic life, and collective memory. In Surakarta, four historic markets—Pasar Gede, Pasar Klewer, Pasar Legi, and Pasar Triwindu—sustain the city’s urban identity. However, rapid modernization, commercial restructuring, and shifting consumer behavior have disrupted their spatial and symbolic continuity, raising concerns about the erosion of cultural meaning. Previous studies examined traditional markets mainly from economic or architectural perspectives, rarely exploring how their multidimensional identity evolves under urban transformation. This study investigates how spatial, social, symbolic, and environmental dimensions collectively shape market-based authenticity and the urban identity of Surakarta. A …

An Analysis Of The Sport Fan You Don’T Want To Encounter: Willpower And Fan Dysfunction, Anna M. Minor, Daniel L. Wann Jul 2026

An Analysis Of The Sport Fan You Don’T Want To Encounter: Willpower And Fan Dysfunction, Anna M. Minor, Daniel L. Wann

Findings in Sport, Hospitality, Entertainment, and Event Management

Dysfunctional sport fans are classified as fans who have impaired function as it relates to socialization and social groups in the sport context, leading them to be highly confrontational and frequently complain within sporting environments (Wakefield & Wann, 2006). These fans are frequently loud, obsessive and even violent (Wann & James, 2019). The current research attempts to provide insight into this degree of excessive fandom behavior. Although previous work has examined demographics, alcohol, media consumption, and game attendance among dysfunctional fans, research has yet to examine the level of willpower (i.e., self-control) among these persons. With consideration that dysfunctional sport …

Dynamic Cascades In Hyper-Connected Geopolitical Systems: Quantifying Attrition Wave Mechanics And Resonance Stabilization Paths Toward Type 1 Civilizational Metrics, Christopher L. Eckes

Defensive Publications Series

Modern global security architectures behave not as isolated friction points, but as a fluid, hyper-connected ecosystem. When a high-friction decision or structural error occurs within a single systemic node, it generates a kinetic wave that propagates throughout the entire network, building destructive momentum as it strikes secondary institutional vulnerabilities. This paper introduces a rigorous, quantitative framework for mapping these interconnected crises.

By defining an 18-Month Continuous Friction Engine and deploying object-oriented system dynamics modeling, we evaluate how global stability degrades when states systematically trade technical and operational merit for ideological compliance. We anchor our wave mechanics calculations in empirical, real-world …
