The Impact Computer-Assisted Learning Has On Elementary Students Mastering Math Standards, Amanda Geelan
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Math fact fluency is a fundamental skill students need to become proficient in to engage in higher-level math skills. For many students, learning their math facts and becoming fluent in them can be a challenge. This inquiry-based research study aims to determine if the use of computer-assisted learning programs such as Math Fact Lab can help educators meet the varying needs of their students while also making learning math facts an engaging and personalized educational experience for students. The study utilized a quantitative approach, using both Math Fact Lab placement test scores as well as data from the learning levels …
Teacher Identification Of Learned Helplessness And Supportive Strategies, Kathleen A. De Jong
Teacher Identification Of Learned Helplessness And Supportive Strategies, Kathleen A. De Jong
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Learned helplessness is a common problem in the upper grades of compulsory education. It creates frustration and has a significant negative impact on academic achievement. Teachers need to accurately identify learned helplessness behaviors before they can promote effective strategies for student autonomy, resilience, and academic success. Research has shown that appropriate strategies successfully mitigate or prevent learned helplessness, but misguided strategies will exacerbate the problem. This study aims to examine the behaviors that teachers currently associate with learned helplessness and the strategies they have found to be successful in mitigating its effects in their classrooms. After reviewing literature on learned …
Trauma-Informed Training For Early Childhood Educators, Tarah Bryant
Trauma-Informed Training For Early Childhood Educators, Tarah Bryant
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
More students are arriving in the early childhood classroom with trauma. This trauma can lead to PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), ADHD and reactive attachment disorder. This leads to early childhood teachers feeling burned out and experiencing secondary trauma. Despite this, early childhood educators are not getting additional training that would help support children who have exposure to trauma. In addition, the training they have received doesn't include classroom strategies or social-emotional materials that would address the uptick in trauma-impacted children. The purpose of this study was to look at the perspectives of early childhood educators when it comes to their …
Supporting Productive Struggle Within The Special Education Classroom, Nicole Snitkey
Supporting Productive Struggle Within The Special Education Classroom, Nicole Snitkey
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Students with significant disabilities are frequently taught using highly structured, direct instruction, often with an errorless component. While this approach can build confidence in specific tasks, it may limit opportunities for developing independent problem-solving skills. When these students are presented with unfamiliar challenges, they may experience frustration and dysregulation. This study aims to investigate what productive struggle strategies are effective in supporting students when engaging in challenging tasks while also maintaining regulation. Qualitative data was gathered utilizing field notes to determine what, if any, productive struggle strategies support students in special education through a challenging task. The results of this …
Improve Mentor Communication And Listening By Implementing Jim Knight’S Impact Cycle With Preservice Teachers, Molly Montavon
Improve Mentor Communication And Listening By Implementing Jim Knight’S Impact Cycle With Preservice Teachers, Molly Montavon
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Early childhood education preservice teachers encounter a variety of mentors throughout their education journey with a varying degree of success. The problem is that early childhood education (ECE) students completing preservice teaching experiences within a community college lab school are not provided with equitable mentoring experiences, resulting from using inconsistent techniques across all classrooms and mentors. The purpose of the inquiry-based research is to explore the use of Jim Knight’s (2022) Impact Cycle to support the mentoring process for early childhood education preservice teachers. Consistent, high-quality coaching and mentoring are vital to the success of preservice teachers. This belief has …

In the Spring semester of 2025, my research included an intricately outlined plan to execute the making of my film “REM” from start to finish. At the beginning, all of my deadlines were completed promptly starting with auditions, to location scouts, to storyboarding, shot listing, and schedules - everything was accounted for down to the most minute details. I learned a lot about the process of filmmaking and how incredibly helpful the specifics of planning are when production begins.
Throughout the production and post production process, some advice for myself is to begin a film production only when the script …
Obstetric Fistula Prevalence Among Internally Displaced Women In Sub-Saharan Africa, Kyli Fox Soug
Obstetric Fistula Prevalence Among Internally Displaced Women In Sub-Saharan Africa, Kyli Fox Soug
AWE (A Woman’s Experience)
Obstetric fistulas are rare in the West but common for women in the Global South, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Fistulas are caused by prolonged or obstructed labor which forces downward pressure on the baby’s head and the mother’s pelvis. This pressure creates a non-natural opening in the genital region. Fistulas cause leakage of waste and therefore are often accompanied by unwanted odors. As of 2021, the prevalence of obstetric fistulas was 2 million women in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, and 3 in every 1000 women of reproductive age in the world have a fistula. In the …

Flight Of The Clipped Wings, Thaily Jeanty
Digressions: Literary & Art Journal
Author Statement
"'Flight of the Clipped Wings' delves into the emotional journey of struggling with mental health issues and the stigma that often surrounds them. The pressure to conform to societal norms is a constant struggle, especially when fear of discrimination is at play. The pet birds represent two contrasting aspects: Charlotte symbolizes freedom and hope, while Cassiel embodies isolation and loneliness. These birds act as foils to one another, reflecting the tension between societal expectations and personal non-conformity. The piece aims to raise awareness by immersing readers in this complex experience."

Principal Component Analysis Of Emotion Related Concepts, Ana Kellermann Jimenez
Principal Component Analysis Of Emotion Related Concepts, Ana Kellermann Jimenez
Clinical Psychology Dissertations
Past research has established the overlap between several emotion-related factors, such as alexithymia, empathy, emotional intelligence, mindfulness, and mentalization. The aim of the present study was to analyze where these variables overlapped and how they related to different psychological and psychopathological variables. This was accomplished through the use of a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and four canonical correlation models. The results indicated that there was an eight-component structure that included Alexithymia, Valuing Emotions, Mistrusting Emotions, Positive Reframe, Perspective-Taking, Empathetic Concern, Emotional Pessimism, and Avoiding Emotions. The internal reliability of the components ranged from adequate to excellent. The validity of the …

Psychological studies on close relationships have often overlooked cultural diversity, dynamic processes, and potentially universal principles that shape intimate partnerships. To address the limited generalizability of previous research and advance our understanding of romantic love experiences, mate preferences, and physical attractiveness, we conducted a large-scale cross-cultural survey study on these topics. A total of 404 researchers collected data in 45 languages from April to August 2021, involving 117,293 participants from 175 countries. Aside from standard demographic questions, the survey included valuable information on variables relevant to romantic relationships: intimate, passionate, and committed love within romantic relationships, physical-attractiveness enhancing behaviors, gender …

The Buzzard In The Abolitionist Sea; An Examination Of Maritime Suppression, Imperial Policy, And The Slave Trade Through The Royal Navy’S Hms Buzzard, 1830s-1840s, Sean Joaquim Coudray-Pereira
Master's Theses
Analysis of the Royal Navy through the microhistory of the HMS Buzzard following the abolition of the slave trade between 1807 and the 1840s by Great Britain offers insight into the moral ambiguities and complexities of the humanitarian mission. The historiography of the slave trade has primarily focused on the moral and economic ideology behind its abolition, pitting one against the other. Applying a micro-historic approach highlights the nuances of both arguments, and through the HMS Buzzard’s crew, captives, disease, voyages, and legal battles accentuates the blend of both argument approaches. The case study of its longevity through all six …

This study investigated the effectiveness of a project management simulation in enhancing non-traditional undergraduate students' project management knowledge, self-efficacy, and perceptions in a project management capstone course. The simulation tool, SimulTrain®, provided an authentic, real-world context to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Utilizing mixed-methods action research, the study comprehensively evaluated the simulation’s impact on students’ learning. The research was guided by three questions: (1) How does a simulation activity affect non-traditional students’ project management knowledge in a capstone course? (2) To what extent does the simulation impact their self-efficacy? (3) What are students’ perceptions of learning …
Hearing All The Colors: Stories Of Engagement From Teachers' Perspectives, Carolyn Allison
Hearing All The Colors: Stories Of Engagement From Teachers' Perspectives, Carolyn Allison
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative case study documented four high school English II End of Course teachers' stories about student engagement in the classroom. Students of color, in particular, have been maligned for underperformance on state-mandated tests. Instead of focusing on the despairing headlines and data, this study focused on how teachers follow the state standards and district curriculum guides to increase success. The teachers' authentic voices on student engagement shine through their stories. Student engagement is not a one-size-fits-all scenario which these teachers prove.
The teachers' stories served as the data for this study. The data was viewed through the lens of …
Apathy Or Agency: Exploring Civic Engagement With Ap Psychology Students, Regina Dilley
Apathy Or Agency: Exploring Civic Engagement With Ap Psychology Students, Regina Dilley
Theses and Dissertations
Sensing my high school students’ apathy toward civic engagement, I used a community of inquiry framework to address this problem of practice. Through mixed-methods action research, I explored participants’ perspectives on community, civic engagement, and their involvement in both spheres. A community of inquiry framework was the foundation for my research questions, and as I collected data, I launched an intervention based upon my findings. Although the results of this study were not statistically significant and are not generalizable, I collected a wealth of survey, interview, and reflection data from 48 students across two classes. Analysis grounded in my observations …
A Neuro-Symbolic Ai Approach To Scene Understanding In Autonomous Systems, Ruwan Tharanga Wickramarachchige Don
A Neuro-Symbolic Ai Approach To Scene Understanding In Autonomous Systems, Ruwan Tharanga Wickramarachchige Don
Theses and Dissertations
Effectively understanding scenes requires a unified representation of scene data and background knowledge. A neuro-symbolic AI approach to scene understanding leverages such a unified representation to enable advanced expression, inference, and labeling of scenes, improving the perception of autonomous systems.
Scene understanding remains a central challenge in the machine perception of autonomous systems. It requires the integration of multiple sources of information, background knowledge, and heterogeneous sensor data to perceive, interpret, and reason about both physical and semantic aspects of dynamic environments. Current approaches to scene understanding primarily rely on computer vision and deep learning models that operate directly on …

Feedback Frequency And Skill Learning In College Athletes: "A Multivariate Analysis", Andrew Gannon
Doctorate in Kinesiology
This study aims to look at feedback frequency with college athletes through augmented feedback with a novel sports skill. While there is research on feedback frequency, much of that research has been conducted using children and general population college students as participants; there is very limited research on athletes as participants. Athletes possess a unique characteristic as they are typically advanced in motor skills and routinely receive feedback in the practice of their sport. Participants in the study were NCAA Division II college athletes (N=82) from one of nine sports. Using a modified golf putt, participants tried to land a …

This study sought to describe the experiences of families seeking asylum at the U.S./Mexico border and explore how traveling with and without family was associated with mental health in a large group of Latinx adults. Additionally, we explored relations between experiences of family separation due to migration and anxiety and depression. N = 400 participants were recruited from two main locations: an encampment site along the Rio Grande River in Reynosa Tamaulipas, Mexico and a respite center serving families recently released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection in McAllen, Texas. The average age of participants was 31.35 years (SD …

Deception is the intentional practice of twisting information. It is a nuanced societal practice deeply intertwined with human societal evolution, characterized by a multitude of facets. This research explores the problem of deception through the lens of psychology, employing a framework that categorizes deception into three forms: lies of omission, lies of commission, and lies of influence. The primary focus of this study is specifically on investigating only lies of omission. We propose a novel framework for deception detection leveraging NLP techniques. We curated an annotated dataset of 876,784 samples by amalgamating a popular large-scale fake news dataset and scraped …

Importance
Recent data point to the impact of non-traditional environmental and social factors on Alzheimer's Disease-Related Dementias (ADRD) mortality. Our study aimed to determine the extent to which antecedent air pollution, social vulnerability, and geospatial features in the environment associate with ADRD mortality.Design
This was a cross-sectional study conducted across the mainland United States. County level Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), particulate matter air pollution (PM2.5) were linked to ADRD mortality. Patient Rule Induction Method (PRIM) was used for delineating and characterizing “bumps” or spikes in mortality. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) values were used to rank variables by predictivity and …Outcomes Of Specialist Physiotherapy For Functional Motor Disorder: The Physio4fmd Rct, Physio4fmd Study Group, Glenn Nielsen, Louise Marston, Rachael Maree Hunter, Alan Carson, Laura H. Background: Functional motor disorder often causes persistent disabling symptoms that are associated with high healthcare costs. In recent years, specialist physiotherapy, informed by an understanding of functional motor disorder, has emerged as a promising treatment, but there is an absence of evidence of its effectiveness from large randomised controlled trials. Methods: We conducted a pragmatic, multicentre, randomised controlled trial, comparing specialist physiotherapy for functional motor disorder to treatment as usual, which was defined as community neurological physiotherapy. The primary outcome was the Short Form questionnaire-36 items Physical Functioning domain at 12 months (scale range 0–100, with 100 indicating optimum health). …
