An Exceptive Account Of ‘Unless’ Clauses: Corpus Evidence, Wajed Al-Ahmad
An Exceptive Account Of ‘Unless’ Clauses: Corpus Evidence, Wajed Al-Ahmad
Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series
This paper provides corpus evidence to demonstrate that ‘unless’ clauses function like exceptive constructions (ECs). It adopts Galal et al. (2019) classification of ECs into two categories: paradigmatic ECs (connected/regular exceptive) and hypotactic ECs (free exceptive). The current analysis applies this classification to ‘unless’ clauses to examine their behavior. Corpus evidence shows that unless clauses consistently occupy a fixed position relative to their antecedent, similar to paradigmatic ECs. However, the two constructions differ in that ‘unless’ clauses occur before the antecedent regardless of the position of the consequent (the statement), whereas paradigmatic ECs occur after the antecedent. Additionally, unless allows …

Vulnerable Consolidation Of Democracy In South Korea, Choi Hongseok
Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series
This research examines the process of democratic consolidation in South Korea, with a focus on the interactions of political actors. It posits that if democratization depends on political interactions, then the outcomes tend to be fluctuating. The study tests the hypothesis that South Korea’s democratic transition was the result of strategic interactions among political actors, analyzing the presidential nomination process of 1992 as a crucial moment in South Korea’s democratization. The analysis employs rational choice theory and a game theory model. The results indicate that the strategic interactions of political actors played a decisive role in shaping the transition process, …

A Travel Ban Is Nothing New: Moral Panic, Moral Entrepreneurs, And Immigration Policy, William F. Danaher, Debaleena Ghosh
A Travel Ban Is Nothing New: Moral Panic, Moral Entrepreneurs, And Immigration Policy, William F. Danaher, Debaleena Ghosh
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
The U.S. travel ban on Muslims was part of a historical pattern to curb immigration. In this paper, we take a historical-comparative approach to analyze two cases: The Chinese Exclusion Act and the Muslim Ban. We show how moral panics fueled by moral entrepreneurs led to immigration policies banning both groups and how historical events were important in the process. In the Chinese case, cultural stereotypes and competition with other immigrant groups led to the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act. In the Muslim case, 9/11 led moral entrepreneurs to associate all Muslims with terrorism, setting the stage for moral panic and …

Learning In Virtual Environments With Varying Levels Of Sensory Information, Maryam Derayati Far
Learning In Virtual Environments With Varying Levels Of Sensory Information, Maryam Derayati Far
Psychology Theses and Dissertations
The sensory environment plays a critical role in shaping learners’ attention, engagement, and retention. This thesis investigates how varying levels of sensory input in virtual reality (VR) classrooms influence learning for two age groups—children and young adults—and explores how individual differences in sensory processing moderate these effects. Using immersive VR technology to simulate classroom settings, two experimental studies were conducted. Study One involved 60 children aged 6–15 years, recruited primarily through a university-run summer camp. Study Two included 57 undergraduate students aged 18–36 years, recruited through a research participation pool. In both studies, participants were randomly assigned to either a …
Post-Finasteride Syndrome: Medically Unexplained, Stewart Justman
Post-Finasteride Syndrome: Medically Unexplained, Stewart Justman
Global Humanities and Religions Faculty Publications
Post-Finasteride Syndrome (PFS) is a controversial illness associated with a host of distressing symptoms—most notably sexual dysfunctions—reported to persist long beyond the intake of finasteride itself. It appears the PFS population consists exclusively of younger patients with alopecia, even though millions take a higher (if pharmacologically similar) dosage of finasteride for benign prostatic hyperplasia. This dichotomy is not what one would expect to observe if finasteride caused PFS. No medical explanation of this one-sided syndrome exists. The surge of cases of PFS following a publicity spike in 2011 and 2012 suggests that PFS owes much nonbiological factors. The present analysis …
Gaming As Therapeutic Modality For Military Veterans: Evidence, Mechanisms, And Program Design, Piper Hutson, James Hutson
Gaming As Therapeutic Modality For Military Veterans: Evidence, Mechanisms, And Program Design, Piper Hutson, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
This study synthesizes interdisciplinary evidence on game-based interventions for military veterans, mapping neurological mechanisms to clinically relevant outcomes while outlining design principles for community programs that leverage interactive media. The review characterizes how structured gameplay supports emotional regulation through attentional control, predictable feedback schedules, and reward-mediated learning that elevates motivation and mood; links to dopaminergic signaling and reduced rumination suggest plausible pathways for affective stabilization. Executive functions receive targeted engagement via strategy, puzzle, and action mechanics that demand working memory, cognitive flexibility, inhibition, and rapid decision-making, providing ecologically valid practice with measurable transfer to daily functioning. Social architectures in multiplayer …

Item 1: Syllabus: African American Literature, Scott Hicks
Scott Hicks, African American Literature
This syllabus surveys African American literature via the reading and discussion of canonical texts enriched by relevant documentaries. It is divided into a series of topics, organized thematically and roughly chronologically, that foreground consideration of core concepts (such as consciousness, freedom, love, and self-actualization) and tropes (such as tricksters, enslavement, vernacular, and double consciousness) and culminate in consideration of voting advocacy within the context of civil rights activism. Finally, the syllabus makes space for synchronous collaborative writing, in support of students’ development of skills of interpretation and critical thinking in relationship with each other.

Item 2: Activity 1: Creating Group Agreements For Classroom Discussions, Kara Dillard
Kara Dillard, Civic Leadership: Theories and Practice
Higher education classrooms are ideal for learning the skills of democratic civic discourse, but these spaces also need agreed upon norms for how students will engage each other. Over four sequential steps, this activity asks students to reflect on the times they’ve had a difficult discussion, what went well and what did not, and to use these reflections to generate a set of shared class values to guide their conversations about wicked issues.
Item 4: Activity 3: Surfacing Values Through Moral Foundation Conversations, Kara Dillard
Item 4: Activity 3: Surfacing Values Through Moral Foundation Conversations, Kara Dillard
Kara Dillard, Civic Leadership: Theories and Practice
This activity explores the concept of motivated reasoning and the moral foundations people hold that make them believe wicked issues are “wicked.” Students will explore their own values and think about how their values change depending on the issue. Students will also practice talking with people who have different values than them on any given issue.

Item 6: Sociological Imagination And Civic Problems Essay Assignment, Fatima Sattar
Fatima Sattar, Soc 1100 - Introduction to Sociology with a Civic Engagement Emphasis
In this assignment, a short-written essay, students will be using the concept of the “sociological imagination” (introduced by sociologist C. Wright Mills) to examine a local civic problem reported in the news. Mills introduces this idea of “personal troubles” versus “public issues” by explaining that although individuals tend to perceive their problems as being “personal troubles,” these problems are “public issues,” stemming from the structures and culture of society. To effectively engage in civic engagement, we must understand how societal structures, culture, and practices impact our everyday lives and problems we experience. This can then help us work collectively on …
