Opting Out: Over-Alerting And Warning Fatigue In The Era Of Wireless Emergency Alerts, Jeannette Sutton, Michele M. Wood
Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity Faculty Scholarship
While warning fatigue is commonly described among emergency management practitioners as a problem due to over-alerting, which leads to opting out, there has been limited research to define these concepts in a systematic manner that can inform policymaking around public alerting strategies, especially as they relate to Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). In this study, we draw from semi-structured interviews with emergency managers and open-ended responses from surveys with emergency managers and members of the public, to develop definitions of “over-alerting” and “warning fatigue” and to identify the conditions that cause the public to “opt out” of WEA messages. We conduct …

Nicknames in sports can serve a wide range of social and semantic functions. Assigning nicknames to athletes and teams can allow fans to identify with them. Such names can also become symbolic resources that fans and teams turn to when asserting their identity. Nicknames in sports come to convey varied meanings and interpretations understood within a set of contextual properties. This paper fills an empirical gap and investigates nicknames of national sports teams used in Southeast Asia. The investigative focus is on the nicknames of the Philippines men’s and women’s national football teams. Employing Leslie and Skipper’s socio-onomastic framework, this …

This panel brings together global experts to explore the evolving practice of community ergonomics—an approach that applies Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE) to co-design systems with and for marginalized communities. Building on the lessons articulated in Barton et al. (2025), panelists will present diverse case studies that highlight both the promise and complexity of community-engaged HFE work. Panelists will reflect on the epistemological shifts, methodological adaptations, and relational commitments required to move toward genuine collaboration and social impact. Attendees will leave with tangible strategies for engaging communities as co-designers, as well as deeper insight into how our assumptions as HFE …

What Is Worthy Of Inclusion? An Assessment Of The Utility Of Content Selection Strategies At Institutions Of Higher Learning In Zimbabwe, Darlington Mutanda
What Is Worthy Of Inclusion? An Assessment Of The Utility Of Content Selection Strategies At Institutions Of Higher Learning In Zimbabwe, Darlington Mutanda
Irish Journal of Academic Practice
The selection of content for university curricula is of the utmost importance, especially at universities where lecturers have choice in content selection. By contrast, in many jurisdictions, state school systems for primary and secondary schools have syllabi that must be followed to the letter. University teachers/lecturers can choose what to teach, and the selection of content can be based on several factors such as convenience (choosing to teach what one is comfortable with), expertise, research interests, ideology, by accident, or even what one was taught previously despite the dynamic change of knowledge. This means that the student can be impacted …

University Of Plymouth, Plymouth, UKPeople living with obesity have a greater chance of developingcomplications during pregnancy and are over-represented inmaternal mortality data relating to both direct and indirect causesduring pregnancy and up to a year after the birth of their child. Inaddition, epigenetic influences result in metabolic changes inoffspring of people living with obesity leading to a greater chanceof them experiencing long-term health consequences. In view ofthese health concerns, people living with obesity are advised to loseweight in the preconception period, before becoming pregnant.Sustained weight loss, however, can be difficult to achieve, andpeople do not always seek preconception advice. 2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of maternal mortality. Mental health disorders are risk factors for cardiovascular disease in nonpregnant populations, but their association with delivery outcomes is unknown.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study used delivery hospitalizations from the 2021 National Inpatient Sample. We used generalized estimating equations to fit quasi-Poisson regression models for cardiovascular severe maternal morbidity and mortality (SMM) events as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and non-SMM cardiovascular conditions or complications as defined by the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health. Incidence rate ratios were calculated for depression, anxiety, psychosis, bipolar, obsessive-compulsive disorder, …

Purpose: To define the genetic architecture of foveal morphology and explore its relevance to foveal hypoplasia (FH), a hallmark of developmental macular disorders.
Methods: We applied deep-learning algorithms to quantify foveal pit depth from central optical coherence tomography (OCT) B-scans in 61,269 UK Biobank participants. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted using REGENIE, adjusting for age, sex, height, and ancestry. Rare coding variants (frequency < 1%) were analyzed in an exome-wide rare-variant association study (RVAS). Candidate genes were prioritized using integrative mapping; pathway, cross-ancestry, and genetic-correlation analyses were exploratory.
Results: GWAS identified 126 sentinel variants, including 47 novel associations. Integrative mapping prioritized 129 putative causal genes, with 64 not previously implicated in foveal biology. Enriched pathways included retinoic acid metabolism (e.g., CYP26A1), photoreceptor differentiation …
