Ready, Willing But Not Enabled: Families’ Perspectives On Participation In Early Mobilisation In Icu, Turkiah Saeed Alahmari, Peta Drury, John Rihari-Thomas, Yaseen Arabi, Bronwyn Everett

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Introduction: Family participation in healthcare improves care quality and patient health outcomes (Price et al., 2022). It redirects family psychological distress into an active participatory role, humanising the patient's illness and recovery experience (Van Delft et al., 2021). Studies have focused on family participation in medical rounds, nutritional care, delirium assessment, and physical care of ICU patients (Goldfarb et al., 2023). Early mobilisation is advised for restoring functional ability, but patient-related issues, staffing shortages, and budget limitations may prevent its use in ICU settings (Bakhru et al., 2016). Current approaches to facilitate early mobility can be time-consuming, increase nurse burden, …

"It Is Not Easy": The Psychosocial Distress Of Ghanaian Adults Living With Chronic Blood Cancers, Dinah Asantewah Koranteng, Lillian Akorfa Ohene, Samuel Adjorlolo, Yvonne Nartey

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: Living with chronic blood cancer can cause significant psychosocial challenges, especially in low- and middle-income countries with limited healthcare access. Compared to solid tumours, blood cancer patients experience higher rates of anxiety and depression, which are exacerbated for those with chronic blood cancers due to disease uncertainty. Without proper support, these psychological struggles can lead to a poor quality of life, underscoring the importance of identifying the psychosocial burdens and coping mechanisms among adults undergoing treatment.

Method: The study utilized descriptive phenomenology qualitative design to investigate the experiences of adults receiving treatment for chronic blood cancers at a public …

Anxiety And Sleep Disruption Among Icu Patients: A Scoping Review, Hyunji Kim, David Ryamukuru, Talia Brown, Deena Costa

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: Anxiety and sleep disruption are common, interrelated symptoms among intensive care unit (ICU) patients.1,2 These symptoms contribute to psychological distress, which can persist for months and impact the patients' recovery.3 Recent clinical guidelines from the Society of Critical Care Medicine highlighted anxiety as a key risk factor for sleep disruption.4 Thus, understanding the interplay of anxiety and sleep disruption and developing effective interventions to mitigate both are essential.

Purpose: This scoping review aimed to identify existing literature that quantitatively examined anxiety and sleep disruption among adult ICU patients.

Methods: Following the scoping review guidelines from the …

Addressing Debriefing Needs: Enhancing Clinical Practice And Academic Preparedness, Ryan Nguyen, Zechariah Thompson, Renjith Cherian Sep 2025

Addressing Debriefing Needs: Enhancing Clinical Practice And Academic Preparedness, Ryan Nguyen, Zechariah Thompson, Renjith Cherian

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

An estimated 18% of inpatient post-event debriefings occur (Zinns, 2020). Debriefing have seldom occurred with the bedside staff, with one issue being the use of trained facilitators. However, in the academic setting, debriefing is a standard practice for student learning post-simulation. Increasing the education of debriefing and using clinical debriefing tools can improve patient outcomes, increase nurse resiliency, and decrease burnout related to traumatic experiences (Philips).

Professionals in healthcare are experiencing a rise in burnout and post-traumatic stress disorder. This is partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but this issue existed long before the pandemic started (Gilroy, 2022). There has …

Giving More Than Vision: The Evolution And Impact Of Give Kids Sight Day, Leah Prischak, Bs

inSIGHT

Current literature strongly suggests that quality of life is diminished in children with visual impairments.1 In many situations, visual impairment (VI) can be a serious barrier in obtaining the typical experiences and accomplishments of childhood. Evidence suggests an association between visual acuity, refractive error, and child academic performance.2 VI is also associated with the prevalence of more intangible, psychological obstacles in areas such as independence and autonomy, concerns about the future, social relationships, participation, and acceptance.3

When The Hitts Keep Coming: A Case Of Takatsubo Cardiomyopathy Triggered By Delivering A New Diagnosis Of Multiple Myeloma, Corey Haines, Yareli Durazo, Tatiana Dacak, Bharat K. Peddinani, Nida Asif

Research Colloquium

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM), or stress-induced cardiomyopathy, is a transient condition often triggered by acute emotional or physical stress, typically presenting with chest pain, elevated cardiac biomarkers, and electrocardiographic changes mimicking acute coronary syndrome, but without obstructive coronary artery disease. We report the case of an 80-year-old male who developed TCM following the emotional stress of a new multiple myeloma diagnosis. His hospital course was complicated by acute heart failure, cardiogenic shock, and likely heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. Despite a critical ICU stay requiring mechanical ventilation, diuresis, and dialysis initiation, the patient’s cardiac function partially recovered. This case highlights the severe physiologic impact …

Machine Learning Insights Into Multilingual Children's English Reading Achievement: Evaluating The Predictive Power Of Kindergarten Factors On Elementary English Reading Achievement, Nam Nguyen

OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference

Existing machine learning research that examines factors influencing student’s academic achievement largely focuses on monolingual rather than multilingual students. To address this gap, we employ machine learning to analyze the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010-11 (ECLS-K:2011) data of 3,542 nationally representative multilingual children from 970 U.S. schools, who were followed from kindergarten (Fall 2010) to 5th grade (Spring 2016). Our study models and compares the predictive power of six key factors in kindergarten (early reading ability, cognitive and language skills, socio-emotional skills, child characteristics, home literacy environment, and school/classroom characteristics) on English reading achievement across primary years. …

Barry Jenkins' Moonlight: Reimagining The Coming-Of-Age Genre In Film, Jonathan R. Davis Sep 2025

Barry Jenkins' Moonlight: Reimagining The Coming-Of-Age Genre In Film, Jonathan R. Davis

OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference

The coming-of-age genre in film was established during the 1950s, a postwar period defined by rebellious and confused teenagers. Within the film genre, the young protagonist experiences physical or emotional struggle throughout their expedition, resulting in organic identity discovery. One subdivision of the genre that emerged during the 1990s was black coming-of-age stories. However, it was not until Barry Jenkins’ 2016 film Moonlight that the genre was completely reimagined in a new light. Jenkins’ film does not follow the recurrent coming-of-age plotline that has been exemplified in previous films of the genre, which display youthful growth by the end. …

Parental Internalizing Symptoms And Parenting Behaviors: The Moderating Role Of Social Support, Anh Van Nguyen Sep 2025

Parental Internalizing Symptoms And Parenting Behaviors: The Moderating Role Of Social Support, Anh Van Nguyen

OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference

“It takes a village to raise a child”. Social support is vital to parents in carrying out child-rearing duties, which is an additional source of stress for parents. Parents who exhibit higher levels of internalizing symptoms (e.g., depression, anxiety, stress) are more likely to engage in negative parenting behaviors. These behaviors can, in turn, negatively impact child development. Therefore, it is essential to investigate whether greater social support can buffer or attenuate the relationship between parental internalizing symptoms and negative parenting practices. Understanding this potential moderating effect is particularly important given the central role of parenting in shaping children’s developmental …

Evaluating The Effect Of Competition On Adult Physical Activity Using Heart Rate Monitoring, Julia De Paula Silva Sep 2025

Evaluating The Effect Of Competition On Adult Physical Activity Using Heart Rate Monitoring, Julia De Paula Silva

OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference

As of 2023 it has been reported that the United States is facing a physical inactivity crisis, with approximately 24.2% of adults meeting the recommended engagement levels of physical activity (PA). A lack of PA engagement is associated with an increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and types of cancer (e.g., colon, breast). Therefore, the purpose of the proposed study is to develop a cost-effective behavioral intervention to promote PA among adults. This study will recruit dyads of existing friends between ages 18–65 who engage in low levels of PA (i.e., at least 45 min per week). …

The United States’ Secret Warfare Against Democracy, Ashtyn J. Smith

OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference

This study examines the methods used by the U.S government to orchestrate the overthrow of the democratically elected Guatemalan president Jacobo Árbenz in 1954, by focusing on declassified CIA and State Department documents. Through operation PBSUCCESS, the U.S employed a combination of psychological warfare, economic pressure, diplomatic isolation, and paramilitary operations to destabilize the Árbenz administration. CIA documents reveal the role of propaganda campaigns, assassination proposals, and the arming of opposition forces to create internal chaos. By using primary sources such as CIA memos, and the Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) archives, this research will outline the step-by-step …

OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference

Sleep is vital for college students, directly influencing their cognitive, emotional, and physical health, which are crucial for academic success and overall well-being. Sleep deprivation affects memory consolidation, learning, focus, problem-solving, and decision-making, all of which are essential for retaining knowledge, applying it in assignments, and excelling academically. By strengthening neural connections, adequate sleep enhances critical thinking and productivity, while its absence leads to reduced concentration and impaired cognitive performance. Sleep deprivation tends to affect multiple areas of the brain in regard to neural activity, alertness, and cognitive function. Our investigation examines the impact of sleep deprivation on undergraduate cognitive …

Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education

Our ever-evolving societies have faced a myriad of changes in a relatively short span of time. From a heavy focus on globalization to its undesired effects in education across the Global South, from migratory movements, shifting political and ideological landscapes to technological innovations, the impacts on how our students learn and engage with the world has also been in flux. Considering these complexities, this chapter highlights the urgent need for alternative practices and perspectives in language education, and for adaptation in light of the context specific contingencies that teachers and learners face.

Aprender Inglés En La U-Diversidad: The Case Of Colombian University Students With Multiple Marginalized Identities Disrupting Colonial Language Policies And Curricula, Maure Aguirre-Ortega, Yenny Chavarría, Claudia Gutiérrez

Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education

Required to learn English, Black, Indigenous, Migrant and Rural Colombian university students often find themselves oppressed by a colonial curriculum that overlooks their intersecting marginalized identities. Drawing from decoloniality and intersectionality, this paper discusses how coloniality and students’ plethora of identities converge in the English classroom and engage in a dance of oppression and resistance. Mediated by participatory dialogues, results of this (case) study indicate that engaging these minoritized students in a collective initiative to decolonize the English classroom enabled them to a) value the social, cultural, and linguistic identities of their territories b) reflect on the implication of colonial …

Legends, Lies, & Rewritten Lives: After The Little Bighorn: Forgotten Struggles Of Those Who Walked Away, Thomas B. Davidson

DU Textbooks

This Narrative is about an event that occurred on June 25, 1876, on the banks of the Little Bighorn River in what is now the state of Montana. Seen from a 21st century perch, it tells a story of a contest between the armed representatives of two different civilizations, each of which fought in the manner of its society. The narrative will attempt to balance the truth of what happened while also relating an engaging story, but without drifting into sensationalism. The narrative will go beyond a focus on the meeting of the soldiers from either group to explore the …

Behavioral Assessment Software: Enhancing Polygraph And Investigative Interviewing, Alan Saquella Sep 2025

Behavioral Assessment Software: Enhancing Polygraph And Investigative Interviewing, Alan Saquella

Publications

In the rapidly evolving world of security, law enforcement, and investigative sciences, professionals are increasingly turning to advanced technologies to supplement tried-and-true methodologies. One emerging innovation is behavioral assessment software, designed to enhance both pre-employment screening and investigative interviewing. Acting as a form of modern human intelligence collection, these tools enable examiners and investigators to gather deeper insights directly from candidates and subjects, revealing behavioral cues and risk indicators that might otherwise remain hidden (Vrij, 2008).

Importantly, behavioral assessment software is not intended to replace polygraph or other traditional investigative methods. Instead, it functions as a complementary resource—one that provides …

Nigerian Immigrant Mothers’ Parenting Style In Supporting Academic Achievement In Their Children, Ganiyat Olasumbo Saidu Sep 2025

Nigerian Immigrant Mothers’ Parenting Style In Supporting Academic Achievement In Their Children, Ganiyat Olasumbo Saidu

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Supporting their children’s academic activities while navigating the socioeconomic norms of the new system continues to be a significant challenge for most immigrant parents in urban areas of the United States. However, there is inadequate literature on the parenting behaviors used by Nigerian immigrant parents to support their children’s academic achievement. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand how Nigerian immigrant mothers describe the parenting styles that support their children’s academic achievement. The theoretical framework for this study was Bandura’s (1977) social cognitive theory and Baumrind’s (1966) theory of parenting styles. For this basic qualitative study, the population …
