INTRODUCTION: Screening for health-related social needs (HRSN) is a growing national health priority. While multiple HRSN screening tools currently exist, none to our knowledge have been evaluated using robust statistical analyses. The goal of this work is to provide results from a validation study of the Jefferson HRSN screener conducted across inpatient and outpatient settings.
METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional psychometric study included HRSN assessments conducted across inpatient and outpatient settings with adult patients from March 2023 to May 2024. The study was conducted across a 17-hospital academic health system serving a diverse community in a 9-county area crossing two states …

Identifying Factors Linked To A Higher Prevalence Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Among Younger Us Military Veterans, Jordan Hathorn
Identifying Factors Linked To A Higher Prevalence Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Among Younger Us Military Veterans, Jordan Hathorn
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Objectives: Posttraumatic stress disorder is a significant public health concern in the U.S., with military veterans disproportionately affected. Although younger veterans exhibit a higher prevalence of PTSD compared to their older counterparts, the mechanisms driving this age-related difference remain unclear. This study examined sociodemographic, trauma-specific, and psychosocial factors that may contribute to the elevated prevalence of PTSD in younger (age < 50) vs. older (age 50 and older) veterans.
Methods: Data were analyzed from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study (NHRVS), which surveyed a nationally representative sample of US military veterans (n=4,069).
Results: Younger veterans were three times more likely to screen positive for PTSD compared to …

Aripiprazole- And Lurasidone-Induced Akathisia: A Case Report And Literature Review., Kalyan Kandra
Articles
Akathisia is a distressing extrapyramidal symptom of antipsychotic medications, characterized by a subjective feeling of inner restlessness and an objective urge to move. While first-generation antipsychotics are often associated with akathisia, second-generation antipsychotics, including partial dopamine agonists, such as aripiprazole and serotonin-dopamine activity modulators like lurasidone, may also cause akathisia. This report details the case of a 46-year-old male with treatment-resistant depression who developed severe akathisia sequentially during augmentation therapy, first with lurasidone and later with aripiprazole. In both instances, the distressing symptoms resolved completely upon discontinuation of the offending agent. This case is significant as it highlights that even …

Strategies Managers Use To Improve Employee Retention, Jeanette L. Moncure
Strategies Managers Use To Improve Employee Retention, Jeanette L. Moncure
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Addressing employee turnover and boosting retention are major challenges for companies looking to achieve long-term success. Project managers are crucial in tackling this issue, as high turnover can undermine team performance and increase operational costs. Grounded in Herzberg’s two factor theory, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore strategies that some project managers use to reduce high employee turnover. The participants included six project managers in Mississippi who had an active role in using strategies to increase employee retention. Data were collected using semistructured interviews, organizational documentation, and research statistics. Thematic analysis identified six key strategies: (a) …
Multiple Pathways Of Social Impairment For Youth With Symptoms Of Adhd: A Novel Model Of Serial Mediation, Ewald Michael Wefelmeyer
Multiple Pathways Of Social Impairment For Youth With Symptoms Of Adhd: A Novel Model Of Serial Mediation, Ewald Michael Wefelmeyer
Dissertations (1934 -)
The current study sought to explain the heterogeneity of social impairment among youth with symptoms of ADHD with the goal of potentially improving a clinician's ability to identify and support those children. A novel model of the relationship between the disorder and social impairment was proposed with serial mediators of parental/family functioning and emotion regulation. It was anticipated that a higher level of ADHD symptoms would lead to more impairment among aspects of parental/family functioning, which would predict more emotion dysregulation which would subsequently predict poorer social functioning. Structural Equation Modeling yielded little support for the overall model and no …

Exploring Students' Perceptions Of Genai Tools In Higher Education: A Case Study, Dina Mansour Tbaishat, Maha Waleed Elfadel
All Works
As artificial intelligence transforms the educational landscape, generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools have become influential in enhancing learning experiences. Despite their growing presence in higher education, limited research explores how university students, especially learners in non-Western contexts, perceive these tools. This study investigates students' perceptions at a university in the UAE, focusing on five dimensions: perceived benefits, institutional support, technological self-efficacy, ethical considerations and user satisfaction. The findings reveal that students generally expressed strong agreement regarding the benefits of GenAI, demonstrated a clear sense of ethical awareness and felt confident in their technological abilities. While satisfaction levels were generally high, …

Financial Inducements In Gambling Marketing: An Information Disclosure Proposal To Inform Gamblers Of Their True Economic Value, Philip Newall, Dominic Cortis, Jamie Torrance
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
Financial inducements such as free bets are frequently-used gambling marketing offers which temporarily improve a gambler’s usual pattern of risk and potential return. Previous research has shown that there are up to 15 distinct types of financial inducements in common use, and that gamblers frequently misunderstand inducements’ play-through requirements and other complex terms and conditions. The Australian government has therefore recently banned play-through requirements for inducements shown to new customers, and the Great British regulator the Gambling Commission has recently announced a maximum play-through requirement of 10 times. The present work describes an alternative and yet potentially complementary approach based …

Employee retention challenges in small businesses can undermine organizational effectiveness and profitability. Small business leaders in the Midwestern United States service industry are particularly concerned with ineffective human resource (HR) strategies, as these shortcomings often contribute to reduced workforce engagement and higher turnover. Grounded in the resource-based view (RBV) theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry study was to explore successful HR strategies that small business leaders in the Midwestern United States service industry use to sustain organizational effectiveness and overall profitability. The participants were six HR leaders from small service firms who had successfully implemented HR practices that …

Impact Of Restorative Yoga On Mental Health And Cognitive Function In Doctoral Physical Therapy Students, Carly Ritter
Doctorate in Kinesiology
Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students experience high academic stress, often impacting mental health. Restorative yoga may reduce stress, regulate the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis response, and support cognitive function. This study examined its effects on mental health and cognitive function in DPT students. Forty-four students were randomly assigned to restorative yoga or control groups in a double-blind design. Participants completed the Stroop Test, Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT), Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-8), and a demographic survey at baseline and after 6 weeks. The yoga group practiced twice weekly; controls maintained regular activity, excluding yoga. ANOVA and correlation analyses …

Two Essays On Health And Health Behavior In China, Jiamin Tan
Two Essays On Health And Health Behavior In China, Jiamin Tan
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
This thesis consists of two empirical studies on elderly mental health and on health behaviors. The first study investigates the long-term impact of childhood hunger on mental health in later life, using data from two nationally representative surveys in China. The study finds that childhood hunger exposure significantly increases the risks of depression and anxiety in later life. These effects are most pronounced among individuals exposed after age 5, suggesting that autobiographical memory formation plays an important role beyond socioeconomic and health pathways. The findings further indicate these impacts can be mitigated through economic interventions, such as welfare programs, and …

Grit, A Component Of Resident Well-Being, Nathan W. Olson, Kelly Williamson, Nicholas Hartman, Navneet Cheema, Adriana S. Olson
Journal of Wellness
Introduction: Trainees experiencing burnout, depression, or career dissatisfaction challenge educators and may have patient care consequences. Grit, defined as the “perseverance and passion for long-term goals,” buffers against hopelessness and quantifies an aspect of personality shown to predict fewer career changes. Higher grit has been associated with positive outcomes in physicians, including lower burnout rates. Our objective was to determine the correlation between emergency medicine (EM) resident Short Grit Scale (Grit-S) scores and components of well-being: burnout, a positive depression screen, and career satisfaction.
Methods: This was a prospective, multicenter trial involving ten urban/suburban EM residencies. The subjects …

Identification Of Critical Brain Regions For Autism Diagnosis From Fmri Data Using Explainable Ai: An Observational Analysis Of The Abide Dataset, Suryansh Vidya, Kush Gupta, Amir Aly, Andy Wills, Emmanuel Ifeachor, Rohit Shankar
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) significantly improves quality of life, yet current diagnostic practices rely on subjective behavioural assessments. While machine learning models using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) show promise for objective diagnosis, existing approaches have critical limitations. High-accuracy models often neglect interpretability, increasing clinical distrust, while interpretable approaches frequently suffer from low accuracy and lack neuroscientific validation of identified biomarkers. Furthermore, no studies have systematically benchmarked which interpretability methods are most effective for fMRI data, hindering the translation of Artificial intelligence (AI) findings into clinical practice.
METHODS: In this observational study, we used the Autism Brain …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
Direct electrical stimulation of the human brain has been used for numerous clinical and scientific applications. At present, however, little is known about how intracranial stimulation affects activity at the microscale. In this study, we recorded intracranial EEG data from a cohort of patients with medically refractory epilepsy as they completed a visual recognition memory task. During the memory task, brief trains of intracranial theta burst stimulation (TBS) were delivered to the basolateral amygdala (BLA). Using simultaneous microelectrode recordings, we isolated neurons in the hippocampus, amygdala, orbitofrontal cortex, and anterior cingulate cortex and tested whether stimulation enhanced or suppressed firing …

Loneliness, Technology, And Culture: Insights From Older Chinese Immigrants’ Experiences, Shao-Yun Chien, Oleg Zaslavsky, Basia Belza, Annie T. Chen
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background: Loneliness and social isolation significantly impact the well-being of older adults, particularly immigrants from minority groups. Chinese immigrants are the third-largest immigrant group in the United States and may encounter unique challenges related to loneliness and social isolation due to life transitions. The prevalence of loneliness among older Chinese immigrants is 26%, significantly higher than in the broader aging population. Despite information and communication technology (ICT) interventions developed to address these issues, their effectiveness remains unclear, possibly due to neglecting the subjective nature of loneliness and the diverse backgrounds of participants, including racial and cultural differences.

Internalizing Stigma And Distancing Behaviors: Social Media Youth Perspectives, Lauren L. Niles
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Significance: Rates of youth mental health difficulties have risen drastically in recent years. Transition-aged youth (TAY) ages 18-24 years old represent a vulnerable population at risk for poor mental health outcomes, with depression and anxiety diagnoses increasing faster than any other age group. While the cause for this upsurge is multifaceted, these trends have occurred concurrently with the increasing popularity of social media (SM) platforms. Current evidence presents contradictory findings as to the impact of SM platforms on mental health, revealing a critical gap in knowledge.
Methods: This interpretative phenomenological study aimed to explore the social media perceptions of TAY …
