(Gendered) Transcultural Capital And Memory In Zahid Hussain’S The Curry Mile (2006), Dhanya V. Sankar, Sarbani Banerjee

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Transcultural memory intertwines with transnationality, integrating decolonial paradigms into the making of a plurality of cultures. Drawing from Astrid Erll’s conceptualization of “travelling memory,” the “migrant memories” are always in kinesis and cannot be pinned down to a singular geographic location or culture. Instead, they facilitate active engagement with the host nation. Zahid Hussain, a British Pakistani author, captures this dynamic in his novel, The Curry Mile (2006), which portrays the aspirations of second-generation migrant Sorayah Butt, a woman in her 20s battling several personal and cultural issues when she decides to step in for her father, who is losing …

Plastic Makes Perfect: An Analysis Of Plastic Surgery As Rehabilitation In Early To Late 20th Century Prison Populations, Jack West Sep 2025

Plastic Makes Perfect: An Analysis Of Plastic Surgery As Rehabilitation In Early To Late 20th Century Prison Populations, Jack West

The Ozark Historical Review

As early as 1910, journalists from around the United States reported on the cause-and- effect relationship between a criminal’s physical appearance, their offenses, and the plastic surgeons willing to help them. These surgeons were interested in changing the physical “causes” of criminality to sever the mental roots of crime, inferiority, and anti-social attitude. This paper examines the use of plastic surgery programs as reform in prison through the lens of popular newspaper and journal articles and argues that public perception and reaction revealed in these articles shaped the prison program’s journey from its underground beginning to its eventual demise.

Cruel, As Usual: Application Of The Eighth Amendment To The Use Of Juvenile Criminal Records In Higher Education Admissions, Rabab Alajmi

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

This Note addresses the systemic barrier to societal reintegration faced by juvenile offenders applying to enroll in higher education. Specifically, this Note will examine whether, in light of the Fifth Circuit’s recent Hopkins v. Hosemann decision, Eighth Amendment protections against cruel and unusual punishments should be extended to college applicants with juvenile criminal records who have completed their sentences. This Note argues that the Eighth Amendment reasoning in the Hopkins decision should be applied to higher education institutions who consider an applicant’s juvenile criminal record where the applicant has already completed their sentence. While the Hopkins decision concerned “the …

Climate change, accelerating across multiple dimensions, creates disproportionate environmental costs which primarily affect women, children, gender diverse people and other marginalized groups. Research evidence shows that climate stressors create more vulnerability for women and girls because they lead to increased gender-based violence (GBV) through population movements, resource shortages, and institutional breakdowns. This policy paper examines the intersectionality between GBV and climate change to help governments, donors, and civil society organizations establish gender justice and GBV prevention as essential components of climate mitigation and adaptation strategies. The evidence from Mozambique, India, and Uganda shows essential policy and financial gaps. Policy recommendations …

Understanding Covid-19 Message Fatigue And Reactance In A Post-Crisis Context, Lillian Hamilton Mantel

Dissertations and Theses

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted widespread public health messaging encouraging behaviors such as vaccination, mask-wearing, and staying home when sick. However, persistent exposure to these messages has sometimes produced unintended effects, including message fatigue and psychological reactance. Drawing on psychological reactance theory (PRT) and the integrative model of behavioral prediction (IMBP), this study examines the relationships between message fatigue, psychological reactance, and behavioral intentions toward three COVID-19 preventive behaviors: vaccination, masking, and staying home when sick. A survey of 348 U.S. adults assessed participants' levels of message fatigue, psychological reactance, attitudes, perceived norms, self-efficacy, response efficacy, collective efficacy, and behavioral intentions. …

Educating Correctional Nurses On The Use Of A Mindfulness Program To Reduce Work Stress, Victoria Ngozi Emelogu

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Correctional nurses deliver care in environments marked by violent incidents, chronic understaffing, and moral distress. These conditions heighten occupational stress, jeopardize patient safety, and accelerate staff turnover, yet few U.S. jails provide evidence-based training in rapid self-regulation strategies. The purpose of this staff education project was to evaluate whether a 2-week curriculum could increase correctional nurses’ knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported skills (KAS) for on-shift mindfulness use. Pender’s health promotion model framed the intervention, Bloom’s taxonomy and Kirkpatrick’s evaluation model informed learning objectives and outcome levels. Five correctional nurses at a large urban jail completed an anonymous 10‑item KAS survey before …
