Behavioural Immune System Responses To Coronavirus: A Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory Explanation Of Conformity, Warmth Towards Others And Attitudes Towards Lockdown, Alison M. Bacon, Philip J. Corr
Behavioural Immune System Responses To Coronavirus: A Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory Explanation Of Conformity, Warmth Towards Others And Attitudes Towards Lockdown, Alison M. Bacon, Philip J. Corr
School of Psychology
Behavioural immune system (BIS) describes psychological mechanisms that detect cues to infectious pathogens in the immediate environment, trigger disease-relevant responses and facilitate behavioural avoidance/escape. BIS activation elicits a perceived vulnerability to disease (PVD) which can result in conformity with social norms. However, a response to superficial cues can result in aversive responses to people that pose no actual threat, leading to an aversion to unfamiliar others, and likelihood of prejudice. Pathogen-neutralizing behaviours, therefore, have implications for social interaction as well as illness behaviours and responses to health communications. In this study, we investigate how PVD influences conformity, attitudes to other …

Introduction International guidelines recommend pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) should be offered to adults living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but PR availability is limited in Sri Lanka. Culturally appropriate PR needs to be designed and implemented in Sri Lanka. The study aims to adapt PR to the Sri Lankan context and determine the feasibility of conducting a future trial of the adapted PR in Sri Lanka. Methods and analysis Eligible participants will be identified and will be invited to take part in the randomised controlled feasibility trial, which will be conducted in Central Chest Clinic, Colombo, Sri Lanka. Co-Occurrence Patterns Of Character Strengths And Measured Core Virtues In German-Speaking Adults, Willibald Ruch, Sonja Heintz, Lisa Wagner
Co-Occurrence Patterns Of Character Strengths And Measured Core Virtues In German-Speaking Adults, Willibald Ruch, Sonja Heintz, Lisa Wagner
School of Psychology
The VIA Classification on character strengths and virtues suggests 24 character strengths clustered into six core virtues (wisdom and knowledge, courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence). Three recent studies employed different methods for testing the assignment of character strengths to virtues (e.g., expert and layperson ratings), and generally supported the VIA classification. However, the co-occurrence of character strengths and virtues within individuals has not been examined yet. Another untested assumption is that an individual’s composition of character strengths is related to being considered of “good character.” Thus, the present study addresses three research questions: (1) How do character strengths and …
The Impact Of Compassion Fatigue On Mental Health Sign Language Interpreters Working With Children: A Thematic Analysis, Noor Khatijah Zafirah, Annabella Dyer, Richard J. T. Hamshaw
The Impact Of Compassion Fatigue On Mental Health Sign Language Interpreters Working With Children: A Thematic Analysis, Noor Khatijah Zafirah, Annabella Dyer, Richard J. T. Hamshaw
Journal of Interpretation
The impact of compassion fatigue (CF) on frontline professionals has been widely researched. However, interpreters often work alongside frontline professionals and are exposed to similar traumatic experiences. Despite this, there is a dearth of research exploring the impact of CF on interpreters. Mental health sign language interpreters (SLIs) are believed to be at a higher risk of developing CF compared to other professionals due to high engagement with therapeutic content, demands of their role, and low perception of control over those demands. Research demonstrates that working with children increases one’s risk of developing CF further. Nevertheless, there has been no …

Insights From U.S. Deaf Patients: Interpreters’ Presence And Receptive Skills Matter In Patient-Centered Communication Care, Brenda S. Nicodemus, Lori Whynot, Poorna Kushalnagar
Journal of Interpretation
In the U.S., deaf individuals who use sign language have a legislated right to communication access in the healthcare system, which is often addressed through the provision of signed language interpreters. However, little is known about deaf patients’ perception of interpreter presence, its impact on their disclosure of medical information to physicians, and whether this perception affects their assessment of physicians’ patient-centered communication behaviors (PCC). A total of 811 deaf adults responded to questions on a bilingual ASL-English online survey about their experiences with interpreters and physicians. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between deaf patients’ perception …
Educational Interpreters And The Dunning-Kruger Effect, Stephen Fitzmaurice
Educational Interpreters And The Dunning-Kruger Effect, Stephen Fitzmaurice
Journal of Interpretation
Kruger and Dunning (1999) found the least skilled individuals significantly overestimate their performance. However, as individuals increase their awareness their skills their predictions also become more accurate – the Dunning-Kruger Effect. This study examined the ability of educational interpreters working in public schools to predict their scores on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) a measure of interpreting skills. Findings indicate interpreters experience a Dunning-Kruger Effect in that the least skilled interpreters overestimate their interpreting skills, whereas better interpreters underestimate their interpreting skills. These findings raise important questions about whether lesser skilled educational interpreters are able to adhere to ethical …

Daniel Defoe, Moral Relativism And The Science Of Human Nature In Robinson Crusoe, Khaled Aljenfawi
Daniel Defoe, Moral Relativism And The Science Of Human Nature In Robinson Crusoe, Khaled Aljenfawi
An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)
Nature is one of the most frequently used words in Robinson Crusoe (1719) by Daniel Defoe. It refers to a range of different concepts, varying from a universally recognized natural system, to human nature, in addition to humans withstanding sickness or pain. Sometimes, Defoe projects Nature as a primarily an all self-sufficient universal system, and human nature as a product of this unerring universal scheme. However, what Defoe agrees on in his frequent deployment of the terms Nature/ nature is its stability. For example, according to the Defoean perspective: to understand human nature one needs to recognize the interweaving of …

Using the odds ratio method, fifteen distractors were detected to have differential functioning for sex. The differential distractors functioning is less attactive for females in nine distractors and for male …

Confirmatory Factor Analysis For Mathematics Attitude Scale, Majed Aljodeh
An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)
The current study aimed to validate Attitude Mathematics instrument (ATMI) by confirmatory factor analysis using AMOS program. This (ATMI) administered to 350 tenth grade students in schools in Irbid, Jordan. The students responded on a five- point Likert scale. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) supported the original six- factor correlated structure based on several fit indices, especially after outfit items deleted. The validation provided evidence that this ATMI can be a viable scale to measure students’ attitudes toward mathematics, or by researchers in their researches. The researcher recommended that the teachers and researchers could use this ATMI to measure attitudes toward …
