Derivation Of An Intrinsic Brain Activity Biomarker For The Earliest Prediction Of Cognitive Decline, Leslie S. Prichep, Syed N. Zaidi, Kara Brink, Saloni Kanakia, Bo Liang, Yang Jiang, Ruben Armañanzas
Behavioral Science Faculty Publications
Early identification of cognitive decline in the elderly is essential for timely and effective intervention. Current neuroimaging and clinical biomarkers have largely focused on patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementias, and though effective, have not been demonstrated to be sensitive to the earliest signs of functional abnormalities. The electroencephalogram (EEG), with a millisecond time base, allows a precise exploration of synaptic dysfunction even at the initial stages of the damage. This study introduces a novel non-invasive EEG-based biomarker to predict cognitive decline of participants showing only subjective cognitive impairment (SCI). Baseline EEG recordings from 88 SCI participants who …
What Race Means For Health Among Black Americans: How Microaggressions Shape Self-Efficacy And Readiness For Behavior Change, Amanda Lee Almond
What Race Means For Health Among Black Americans: How Microaggressions Shape Self-Efficacy And Readiness For Behavior Change, Amanda Lee Almond
Publications and Research
Objectives: Persistent racial disparities in cardiovascular health among Black Americans reflect not only structural inequities in the United States, but also the racialized meanings of cardiovascular disease reproduced through public and private health communication. Drawing on ecological systems theory, this research examines how beliefs linking race and cardiovascular disease are reinforced through routine clinical interactions and how these meanings shape health behavior change. Method: Across two experimental mixed-methods studies, a model integrating ecological, social–cognitive, and behavior-change frameworks was tested. In Study 1 (N = 374), health-message framing was experimentally manipulated to examine effects on self-efficacy and decisional balance while controlling …

Pervasive Policing: The Psychological Effects Of Overcriminalization Of Black And Latino Youth, Chloe Gonzalez
Scripps Senior Theses
Recent years have brought increased awareness to the discriminatory treatment of Black and Latino individuals by the police, but a gap in the literature remains at the intersection of the study of criminalization and psychology. The proposed study will attempt to bridge this gap by investigating the extent to which the overcriminalization of Black and Latino high schoolers contributes to the internalization of racialized stereotypes and the development of depressive symptoms. The research will implement a correlational approach combining quantitative and qualitative methods to gather data from a sample of Black and Latino high schoolers ages 14 to 18. Participants …
Roots To Recovery: How Therapeutic Horticulture Can Heal Sexual Trauma, Fiona E. Larsen-Teskey
Roots To Recovery: How Therapeutic Horticulture Can Heal Sexual Trauma, Fiona E. Larsen-Teskey
Scripps Senior Theses
Sexual assault is one of the most prevalent sources of trauma among females. While still requiring more research, therapeutic horticulture (TH), also known as gardening therapy, has so far shown promising results regarding trauma recovery. In this study, I seek to discover how TH can aid in female sexual assault recovery. To determine its impact, I will conduct a three-month experiment with two groups: those who receive cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and those who receive CBT plus TH. I will specifically measure three common side effects survivors face: dissociation, shame, and PTSD. These categories will be measured through surveys and …
Evaluating Acupuncture As An Adjunct To Standard Ulcerative Colitis Therapy, Mia A. Ciotti
Evaluating Acupuncture As An Adjunct To Standard Ulcerative Colitis Therapy, Mia A. Ciotti
Scripps Senior Theses
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by recurring cycles of flare and remission that significantly affect patients’ quality of life. Standard allopathic treatment for UC centers on mesalamine, a 5-aminosalicylic acid drug that acts locally on the colon to reduce inflammation, but does not cure the disease entirely. Acupuncture, rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, has been proposed as an adjunct therapy for inflammatory conditions, yet its biomedical efficacy remains uncertain due to methodological limitations and insufficient controls of prior studies.
This study proposes a randomized, participant and assessor blinded clinical trial evaluating mesalamine, true acupuncture, sham …

As contingency management (CM) moves from research to practice, researchers have a responsibility to outline the minimum procedural necessities that lead to an effective, sustainable treatment that can be implemented as a mainstream therapy for substance use disorders. To begin identifying the minimum requirements, the purpose of the current study was to provide framework and a first step toward building a risk calculator that predicts treatment outcomes in CM, and can predict the optimal incentive size to prescribe by evaluating behavioral economic factors, demographic variables, and use severity measures in individuals who completed CM treatment for alcohol use. Participants were …

Strengthening Rural Health Care: A Scoping Review Of Nurse Recruitment And Retention Strategies, Kelley Arredondo, Laura Witte, Alexander Paterson-Roberts, Alexandra Caloudas, Matthew Vincenti, Bradley V Watts, Bronwyn Sutherland, Hilary Touchett
Library Staff Publications
Background: Despite nursing being the largest US health profession, only 16% of registered nurses (RNs) practice in rural areas, where health care access is limited. This significantly impacts rural residents, including over 2.7 million rural veterans receiving care at the Veterans Health Administration, leading to compromised health outcomes. Nurses are vital in primary care, improving coordination and management of chronic conditions.
Objectives: Identify recruitment and retention programs for rural nurses (licensed vocational nurses/licensed practical nurses and RNs), including strategy characteristics and location.
Research design: We conducted a scoping review of published and gray literature. Eligible studies targeted US rural nurse …

Cultivating Creative Courage: How Metacognition And Choice Influence Risk-Taking In Secondary Visual Arts, Shea Meehan
Cultivating Creative Courage: How Metacognition And Choice Influence Risk-Taking In Secondary Visual Arts, Shea Meehan
Master of Education in Transformational Teaching and Learning
This action research project explored how embedding metacognitive reflection and elective levels of challenge into classroom routines influenced students’ willingness to take creative risks in a secondary visual arts classroom. Conducted in two high school graphic arts classes totaling 38 students, the study introduced daily reflection prompts, structured choice through a “Creative Risk Ladder” (Safe, Stretch, Bold), critique activities and opportunities for student voice and autonomy within open-ended creative projects. Data was collected through student surveys, daily reflections, observational field notes and student artifacts. Findings suggest that students were more willing to engage in creative risk-taking when projects felt personally …

The Joy Of Reading: An Action Research Project, William Cronin
Master of Education in Transformational Teaching and Learning
This study is to investigate what impact sustained silent reading in class will have on student enjoyment in reading. The study was conducted over a two-week period in which students were given 10-15 minutes for sustained silent reading of a hard-copy book of their choice at the end of each class meeting. They were then asked in a survey how they felt after reading, and to give a reason why they answered in that way. Students were also surveyed at the beginning and end of the study with a series of questions about their reading habits and enjoyment level. The …
Emptiness Is Enlightenment: Two Interpretations Of Nāgārjuna's Middle Way As Buddhist Soteriology, Isabella R. Sullivan
Emptiness Is Enlightenment: Two Interpretations Of Nāgārjuna's Middle Way As Buddhist Soteriology, Isabella R. Sullivan
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis investigates the soteriological implications of Nāgārjuna’s doctrine of emptiness (śūnyatā) as presented in the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā (MMK), or Root Verses of the Middle Way. While Nāgārjuna’s radical denial of intrinsic existence (svabhāva) is widely recognized as a masterful critique of metaphysics, modern scholarship remains divided on whether this "right view" can sufficiently ground the Buddhist Path to Liberation. This project centers on a comparative analysis of two prominent modern interpretations: Jay Garfield’s semantic anti-dualism and Giuseppe Ferraro’s anti-metaphysical realism.
The inquiry evaluates these perspectives against the doctrinal frameworks of the Four Noble Truths, dependent …
Broadening The Fetal Alcohol Paradigm: Bdnf Methylation As A Link Between Paternal Alcohol Use And Offspring Neurodevelopmental Deficits, Caitlin E. Muñoz
Broadening The Fetal Alcohol Paradigm: Bdnf Methylation As A Link Between Paternal Alcohol Use And Offspring Neurodevelopmental Deficits, Caitlin E. Muñoz
Scripps Senior Theses
Developmental effects of fetal alcohol exposure are extensively documented as a consequence of maternal gestational alcohol consumption. However, similar consequences of paternal alcohol consumption remain understudied. This proposed pilot study will examine preconception paternal alcohol consumption within its capacity to induce heritable epigenetic modifications in sperm, such that offspring are susceptible to adverse in utero neurodevelopment and neonatal neurobehavioral outcomes. Specifically, it will examine DNA methylation patterns along the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) exon IV promoter in paternal spermatozoa. BDNF exon IV is considered a key locus in neurogenesis regulation, synaptic plasticity, and cortical development. It is hypothesized that BDNF …
Ghostwriting The Government, Bridget C.E. Dooling
Ghostwriting The Government, Bridget C.E. Dooling
Marquette Law Review
Ghostwriting is when a writer prepares materials to be issued under someone else’s name. The word describes a politician’s use of a speechwriter, a student’s purchase of a term paper, or a tongue-twisted admirer asking a poet to craft a love letter on his behalf. It also happens inside organizations every day: staff draft documents for others “up the chain” to sign. But when legislators rely on staff and lobbyists to draft bills, when an agency head relies on staff or contractors to write a rule, and when a judge relies on her clerk for a draft opinion, the benefits …
Making The Punishment Fit: Individualization And Parity As Principles Of Proportionality, Sonia Anand Knowlton, Sylvia Rich
Making The Punishment Fit: Individualization And Parity As Principles Of Proportionality, Sonia Anand Knowlton, Sylvia Rich
Dalhousie Law Journal
Proportionality is the fundamental principle of sentencing in Canada: a sentence must be proportionate to the gravity of the offence and the blameworthiness of the offender. In order for a sentence to be proportionate, the Supreme Court has stated that it must be individualized to the particular event and also that it must maintain parity with similar offences committed in similar circumstances. Parity tends to compare the relative severity of offences in the abstract, lending itself to the gravity analysis. Individualization, on the other hand, customizes the sentence to the individual’s culpability, lending itself to the blameworthiness analysis. But these …

The systematic review of qualitative studies searches was conducted in MEDLINE, Scopus, EBSCohost, ProQuest, CINAHL, and PsycINFO of articles published between 2005 and 2025 to ensure information is current and relevant to modern practices and to analyze trends and the evolution of a research field over a significant period of 20 years. In total, 2,074 articles were identified, and after screening using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, …
Personal Strength As A Core Dimension Of Posttraumatic Growth: A Multi-Method Study Of U.S. Military Veterans, Steven Moore
Personal Strength As A Core Dimension Of Posttraumatic Growth: A Multi-Method Study Of U.S. Military Veterans, Steven Moore
Social Work Dissertations
U.S. military veterans are frequently exposed to traumatic and morally challenging experiences that can disrupt core assumptions about identity, purpose, and control. While much of the veteran mental health literature has emphasized psychological distress and functional impairment, growing attention has been directed toward posttraumatic growth and strengths-based outcomes. This dissertation examined posttraumatic growth among U.S. military veterans with a specific focus on personal strength as a central dimension of growth following trauma.
Using a multi-method design, this dissertation integrated findings from three complementary studies. First, a scoping review mapped how posttraumatic growth, personal strength, and related constructs have been conceptualized, …

The Cost Of Care: A Mixed Methods Study Of Social Work Student Well-Being, Practicum Pay, And The Future Of Feminized Care In The Health Workforce, Christian Adeleke
Social Work Dissertations
Social work field education, commonly enacted as the practicum, is widely regarded as the profession’s signature pedagogy, yet its material conditions—particularly the prevalence of unpaid or minimally compensated placements—are rarely problematized. This dissertation examined the financial, academic, and well-being consequences of practicum participation among social work students and the mechanisms through which these consequences arise. Using an embedded mixed methods design, the study analyzed secondary data from the Payment for Placements (P4P) survey (N = 618), combining a moderated-mediation structural equation model with a reflexive thematic analysis of open-ended narrative responses. Drawing on feminist political economy and social reproduction …

The counseling profession is rooted in prevention, wellness, mental health, and a critical social justice approach to serving historically marginalized communities, including people with disabilities. The overarching construct of disability comprises subtypes, such as neurodivergence. Given the prevalence of neurodivergent individuals worldwide (approximately 15%-20%), the counseling profession must be prepared to support this community. At the same time, there is a dearth of peer-reviewed literature on neurodiversity specifically for the counseling profession. In this article, we address a timely topic in the profession. We discuss utilizing a critical counseling lens and centering marginalized identities, such as people with disabilities; prominent …

Spirituality And Psychological Well-Being In College Students: Does Resilience Mediate This Relationship, Kevin C. Snow, Jessica Starken, Lindsay A. Phillips
Counseling & Human Services Faculty Publications
Given continued challenges of college transition and recent changes (e.g., COVID) leading to increased use of college counseling services and past studies exploring spiritualty/religion and resilience pertaining to psychological well-being (PWB), this study explored the relationship between spirituality, resilience, and PWB in college students. Three scales, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Daily Spiritual Experience Scale, and the Ryff Psychological Well-Being Scale, were used to measure the relationship between spirituality, resilience, and PWB. Results of this study showed support for the relationship between spirituality, resilience, and PWB in college students. Results also lend support for future research exploring therapeutic incorporation of spirituality …

Reverse Koebner Phenomenon In Linear Scalp Morphea Following Punch Biopsy: A Rare Therapeutic Response, Suhas C. Gowda, Akshay Samagani, Shreyas C. Gowda
Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine
Morphea is a chronic immune-mediated fibrosing disorder characterized by excessive collagen deposition in the skin. Linear morphea of the scalp (en coup de sabre) commonly demonstrates the Koebner phenomenon, wherein lesions develop at sites of trauma; however, the reverse Koebner phenomenon—trauma-induced regression—is exceptionally rare. We report an unusual case of linear scalp morphea showing early regression following a diagnostic punch biopsy. A 71-year-old male presented with an asymptomatic, indurated linear plaque on the scalp of two months’ duration. Histopathology from a 3.5-mm punch biopsy confirmed morphea, demonstrating dense collagen bundles with lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate. At follow-up eight days after …

Base of the pyramid (BoP) scholarship emphasizes the potential for enterprises to generate profits by enhancing the wellbeing of the impoverished, often by selling socially-beneficial products (SBPs). Yet, many such BoP enterprises have experienced mixed results. We argue that this may stem from insufficient attention to how BoP consumers value SBPs and other products. We frame SBPs as a type of human capital investment and thus use human capital theory to study how the consumption of SBPs does or does not create value for consumers. Specifically, we use a novel data set from rural India to measure value creation in …

This study aimed to explain how food delivery platform riders experience objectification in the context of platform-based work, with particular attention to how organizational practices and leadership shape experiences of marginalization, dignity, and voice. A qualitative design was employed using Descriptive Phenomenological Analysis. In-depth interviews were conducted with nine food delivery platform riders to describe the essential structures of their lived experiences of objectification. Subaltern Theory was used as an interpretive lens in making sense of the findings. Five experiential themes were identified: (1) leaders’ non-presence resulting in perceived abandonment, (2) leaders’ devaluing of food delivery riders, (3) social devaluation …

To advance professionally, students must be prepared to navigate dynamic and contentious organizational environments by articulating their varied views, protecting their personal and professional intentions, anticipating challenges, and then fostering consensus. This paper addresses a high-stakes, multi-round immersive role-play simulation of a company merger in an undergraduate Organizational Behavior course. Grounded in the core pillars of experiential learning, adaptive leadership, and organizational sensemaking, this classroom exercise places students in a pre-set, realistic post-merger leadership team facing immediate business challenges. Compared to traditional case studies, this method requires students to demonstrate real-time organizational behavior competencies, providing a powerful platform for negotiation …
