Taking Pride In Vegan Consumption: A Construal Level Theory Account Of Ad Message Appeal And Future Self Connectedness, Mona Safizadeh, Atefeh Yazdanparast, Reto Felix

Marketing Faculty Publications

Despite growing interest in vegan products, research examining the motivations, underlying psychological processes, and boundary conditions that drive consumer preference for vegan products remains limited. Drawing on theories of temporal self and appraisal theory, we find that an immediate message appeal (e.g., animal welfare), as compared to a future outcome message appeal (e.g., environmental benefits), leads to higher preference for vegan products. Anticipated consumption pride, but not guilt, mediates this relationship, highlighting the role of positive emotions in shaping ethical behavior. Furthermore, we examine how aligning the temporal orientation of advertising message appeals with individuals' construal mindsets, as primed by …

Disruptive Religion And Ethical Opposition: The Force Of Moral Authority In Indonesia’S Democratic Consolidation, Savran Billahi, Idris Thaha, Suryani Suryani, Mohammad Ezha Fachriza Jan 2026

Disruptive Religion And Ethical Opposition: The Force Of Moral Authority In Indonesia’S Democratic Consolidation, Savran Billahi, Idris Thaha, Suryani Suryani, Mohammad Ezha Fachriza

Jurnal Wacana Politik

This article argues that democratic consolidation in Indonesia cannot be explained solely through the performance of formal institutions. By foregrounding ethical opposition as a missing variable in dominant consolidation theories, it shows that democracy has also been sustained by a normative infrastructure that legitimizes critique beyond institutional arenas. Based on qualitative historical analysis of Abdurrahman Wahid’s and Ahmad Syafii Maarif’s oppositional practices under the New Order and in the post-Reformasi period, the article finds that moral authority enabled non-institutional opposition to constrain state power, normalize dissent, and protect democratic quality. While both figures articulated a corrective and non-subversive mode of …

Legal Paradoxes Of Transition: Transitional Justice And The Rule Of Law Between Nürnberg And Saddam Hussein Trials, Rasha Abdelsamea Ahmed Baghdadi Jan 2026

Legal Paradoxes Of Transition: Transitional Justice And The Rule Of Law Between Nürnberg And Saddam Hussein Trials, Rasha Abdelsamea Ahmed Baghdadi

Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

This thesis critically examines the legal paradoxes embedded within transitional justice (TJ) discourse, using the Nürnberg and Saddam Hussein trials as case studies to interrogate the complex relationship between justice and the rule of law in TJ discourse. It highlights the inherent tension between forward-looking societal reforms and the pursuit of backward-looking justice, challenging the foundational assumptions of TJ as a universal tool for justice and peace. It also questions the validity and credibility of "transition" as a phase between the past and the future. It contends that TJ, driven by Western liberal epistemic foundations, functions as an exclusionary …

Balls, Boots, And Bats: Indo-Fijian Women Reimagining Sport, Masculinity, And Identity In The Global South, Rohini Balram Jan 2026

Balls, Boots, And Bats: Indo-Fijian Women Reimagining Sport, Masculinity, And Identity In The Global South, Rohini Balram

Journal of Global South Sport Studies

In Fiji, physicality and hegemonic masculinity are largely defined by rugby and the military, institutions dominated by Indigenous Fijian men, who are predominantly Christian, often marginalising other races, genders, religions, and sports. While research in the Global South has examined intersections of race and gender, little is known about how masculinity is understood across different sports, sporting icons, and contexts—particularly from the perspective of South Asian migrant women in Oceania with hybrid identities. This paper investigates how young Indo-Fijian women negotiate masculinity, identity, and agency through sport, Bollywood cinema, social media, and cultural narratives. Drawing on a year-long, multi-method participatory …

Stressors And Challenges Faced By Mexican American Caregivers Of Family Members With Alzheimer’S Disease, Romeo Escobar, Denise Longoria, John M. Gonzalez, Nelda Rodriguez

School of Social Work Faculty Publications

Mexican American caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease face unique stressors and challenges, which may be influenced by cultural, socioeconomic, and systemic factors. This population often assumes caregiving responsibilities based on strong cultural values of familismo which emphasizes family duty and collective care. However, this commitment can lead to increased emotional strain, mental health concerns, financial and physical strain, particularly when caregivers have limited access to healthcare resources, financial support, or respite. Language barriers and a lack of culturally competent healthcare services can further exacerbate stress, making it difficult to navigate the complex healthcare system. The purpose of this study …

From Private Custody To Public Policy: The Politics Of State Responsibility For Post-Divorce Abandoned Children (Hadhanah) In Serang, Indonesia, Ali Faisal, Naf’An Tarihoran, B Syafuri, Nurul Ma’Rifah

Jurnal Wacana Politik

This article examines how hadhanah (child custody and care) can be reframed from a private family matter into a public policy issue, positioning the state as a responsible actor when children become abandoned after divorce. Drawing on a normative–juridical and qualitative socio-legal analysis of Islamic family law, national legislation, and municipal policy instruments, the study uses Serang City as an illustrative case of policy urgency. The findings demonstrate a systematic implementation gap between Indonesia’s constitutional mandate to care for abandoned children and local-level governance practice: (1) a legal–administrative gap, where court-based custody decisions and parental obligations do not automatically trigger …

Agentic Intelligence Under Constraint: Energy, Context, And The Expansion Of Exchange, Nick Loghmani Jan 2026

Agentic Intelligence Under Constraint: Energy, Context, And The Expansion Of Exchange, Nick Loghmani

iSchool - All Scholarship

Recent advances in agentic artificial intelligence have been driven primarily by scale: larger models, increased data, and expanding computational resources. However, rising energy costs, inference latency, and hardware constraints increasingly challenge this trajectory. This paper argues that intelligence—biological or artificial—does not primarily scale through raw computational expansion, but through the management of exchange under constraint. Drawing on cognitive science, systems theory, and prior work on exchange-based models of intelligence, the paper proposes a theoretical framework in which agentic intelligence scales through context management, proceduralization, and the assembly of reusable units of exchange. Unlike approaches that focus solely on model compression …

The Image Of The Father In The Autobiography Of Saleh Al-Ghufaili A Psychological Narrative Study, Mohammed Bin Khalifa Bin Battah Al-Khazzi Jan 2026

The Image Of The Father In The Autobiography Of Saleh Al-Ghufaili A Psychological Narrative Study, Mohammed Bin Khalifa Bin Battah Al-Khazzi

Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities

This study examines the image of the father in Saleh Al-Ghufeili’s autobiography “My Life Journey” through a psycho-narrative lens. It employs tools from modern psychological theory—particularly Freud’s view that literary texts are largely emotional products shaped by unconscious stimuli—alongside narrative techniques to trace and interpret the father’s representation and its explicit and implicit meanings. The father’s image emerges as complex and psychologically charged. The narrator appears torn between an unconscious urge to settle unresolved conflicts with his father and a conscious attempt to construct an idealized paternal figure. However, this idealized image collapses when confronted with the contradictory, textually revealed …

Al-Marrār Ibn Munqidh Al-ʿAdawī’S Mīmiyyah: A Study In Imagery And Intertextuality, Tami Bin Dughaylib Al-Shamrānī

Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities

This study explores two key stylistic features in Al-Marrār ibn Munqidh al-ʿAdawī’s’ poem: poetic imagery and intertextuality, as they form the main structural and aesthetic basis of the poem. It highlights their psychological and artistic connotations through a descriptive-analytical and stylistic approach that examines the poem’s expressive and aesthetic aspects. The study includes an introduction outlining the problem, aims, method, and previous studies, followed by two sections: the first section analyzes the artistic image, its forms and meanings; the second section discusses intertextuality with earlier Arabic poetry and its influence on meaning. The conclusion shows that Al-Marrār used simile to …

Insomnia, The Witch, And The Dark Passenger As Shadow Projections In Joharah Al-Remal's Al-Awsaj, Dr. Afaf Al-Enezi Jan 2026

Insomnia, The Witch, And The Dark Passenger As Shadow Projections In Joharah Al-Remal's Al-Awsaj, Dr. Afaf Al-Enezi

Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities

This study investigates how psychic repression and identity fragmentation are represented in Joharah Alremal’s Al-Awsaj (2023), asking how inherited trauma and the symbolic Dark Passenger shape the protagonist’s fractured selfhood. It aims to clarify the mechanisms through which insomnia, shadow projection, and the witch’s prophecies externalize unresolved familial wounds. Methodologically, the paper employs a psychoanalytic close reading informed by Jungian theory, situating the novel in comparative dialogue with Jeff Lindsay’s Darkly Dreaming Dexter (2004). The comparison examines both the universality of repressed destructive impulses and cultural trauma specific forms through which trauma manifests. The study finds that negotiations with the …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Food insecurity and pediatric obesity have increased concurrently in the U.S., raising questions about the role of Federal Nutrition Assistance Programs (FNAPs) in shaping weight outcomes. This systematic review examined evidence on relationships between FNAP participation and pediatric weight outcomes.

METHODS: Six databases were searched for U.S.-based, peer-reviewed studies published through July 2024 that assessed FNAP participation and pediatric weight outcomes.

RESULTS: Seventy-five studies met the inclusion criteria, and no consistent pattern indicated that any single FNAP or program type (educational setting-based or direct financial support) reliably reduced or increased childhood overweight or obesity risk. Twenty studies found statistically …

Dysfunctional Interpersonal Communication In Professional Contexts, Ayoub Dehbi Jan 2026

Dysfunctional Interpersonal Communication In Professional Contexts, Ayoub Dehbi

Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)

In this article, we have presented an overview of the communication process, formulated a definition of communication and examined its central elements: process, transaction, symbols and (shared) meaning. We also examined the debate on intentionality. We briefly reviewed the history of the field of communication to understand how its diverse origins in rhetoric, psychology and elocution support the diversity we find in the field today. As communication is not always positive, the ways in which it can be destructive were noted. Finally, because of these destructive results, communication can never be discussed without an examination of ethics and, therefore, three …
