Re-Thinking The Composition Of The Business School Faculty, Michael A. Carrillo, Arthur Kraft, John Kraft Feb 2026

Re-Thinking The Composition Of The Business School Faculty, Michael A. Carrillo, Arthur Kraft, John Kraft

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Since the 1990s, the faculty of U.S. colleges and universities has shifted from a workforce dominated by full-time tenured and tenure-track positions to one in which contingent appointments predominate. According to the American Association of University Professors, contingent faculty grew from about 47 percent of the national workforce in 1987 to roughly two- thirds by 2021 (AAUP, 2023). Business schools faced the same pressures, including cost constraints, a shortage of doctorally qualified faculty, ranking competition, and revised accreditation standards, but they responded differently. Drawing on two decades of faculty data from 180 AACSB-accredited business schools and a subsample of 54 …

Slow Education, Sit Spot, And Holistic Well-Being: A Narrative Case Study In Secondary Science Education, Steph Dean, Jim Lane, Paul Bocko, Albert Gilbert, Devan A. Jones

Publications

The demands of a test-dominant education system point towards the need for students to have opportunities for unhurried learning engagements, a movement known as slow education. The purpose of this study was to examine the long-term influence of Sit Spot–a recurrent, structured time to reflect outdoors–on students’ holistic well-being. Using a narrative case study approach, we interviewed a secondary field ecology teacher and seven of his former students to understand the impact of high school Sit Spot experiences during a semester-long science class. Three primary outcomes emerged: (1) enduring impact on the whole person, (2) engagement with affect, and (3) …

High Stakes Literacy Testing: Indiana’S Iread-3, Christy Wessel Powell, Karyn Tomkinson, Whitney Rippy Feb 2026

High Stakes Literacy Testing: Indiana’S Iread-3, Christy Wessel Powell, Karyn Tomkinson, Whitney Rippy

Science of Reading

Indiana is one of a few states to enact a high stakes literacy test in third grade, the IREAD-3 test. High stakes testing is often a useful way to ensure a particular level of academic proficiency is met to allow students to succeed in a new setting, like college, or leave high school with desired skills. However, the requirement to automatically retain third graders who do not pass the IREAD-3 test without additional information or considerations, is not supported by research (AERA, 2000). These data highlight the critical need for educators and administrators to understand high-stakes standardized tests, as they …

Legal Reform And Cultural Resistance: Examining The Role Of Law And Custom In Ending Fgm In Egypt, Souhaila Hafez Abo Seada

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the persistent gap between legal reform and social practice in efforts to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Egypt. Although FGM has been criminalized since 2008, with stronger penalties introduced in 2016 and 2021, the practice continues, revealing the limits of law when it operates alongside powerful social, religious, familial, and medical norms. Using a qualitative case-based approach grounded in legal pluralism and Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis, the study draws on 11 semi-structured interviews with participants from civil society, religious institutions, the legal profession, the medical sector, and communities where FGM persists, alongside legislative, demographic, and documentary …

“Language Learners As Ethnographers: A Case Study On A Pedagogical Approach To Developing Intercultural Communicative Competence”, Nihal El-Gameel

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the extensive theoretical models and frameworks for Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC), pedagogical approaches to teaching culture remain underexplored. This study examined the effectiveness of integrating a pedagogical framework—the OSEE framework developed by Deardorff (2000)—within a language classroom context. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through audio-recorded reflections, a questionnaire, an interview, and a final project video presentation in a single-case study design. Data analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s (2014) model of qualitative analysis, employing a funneling approach tailored to each research question: the first applied Chen and Starosta’s ICC model (1996;1999) the second used deductive thematic analysis to …

School of Psychology

Emotional expressions play an important part in social communication of dogs and humans, but comparative studies between dogs and humans are rare. In addition, little is known about how emotions are perceived across species and how attention is divided among different parts of faces. Here, we compared the gazing behavior of dogs and adult humans toward emotional dog and human facial expressions. Dogs mostly gazed at the eye and nose areas, whereas the humans’ focus also included the mouth area. The gazing behavior of both species was affected by the facial expressions and species presented, and they gazed at emotional …

Abuse Of Contract: A Proposal For A New Cause Of Action, Miriam A. Cherry Feb 2026

Abuse Of Contract: A Proposal For A New Cause Of Action, Miriam A. Cherry

William & Mary Law Review

With the growth of online commerce and the platform economy, many companies are including provisions in their online terms and conditions that extend far beyond what reasonable consumers would expect. Some terms and conditions purport to bind customers to separate contracts in future transactions that have little to do with the first contract. Other boilerplate purports to cover family members of the customer who created an account. Some retailers have argued that people shopping in their brick-and-mortar stores are subject to terms and conditions because those shoppers had at some point previously created an online account. For example, Disney argued …

Skrmetti And The Problem Of Incidental Intent, Martin Katz Feb 2026

Skrmetti And The Problem Of Incidental Intent, Martin Katz

William & Mary Law Review

The modern Supreme Court has defined “discriminatory intent” as a strict-liability concept. It does not matter why the government sorts people by a protected characteristic, such as race or sex; it matters only that the government does sort people by such a characteristic. This principle is the key holding of affirmative-action cases, such as Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President & Fellows of Harvard College. Yet, in the recent case United States v. Skrmetti, the Court seemed to focus not on the question of whether the government sorted people by sex (it did), but on the question …

The Impact Of Innovation Belief On Strategic Product R&D, Yan Zhou

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In highly uncertain innovation scenarios characterized by long R&D cycles and high risks, how to continuously drive enterprises to develop market-competitive blockbuster products has become a critical issue of shared concern in both practice and academia. Existing research has mostly explained differences in blockbuster product R&D from perspectives such as resource allocation, organizational structure, or institutional incentives, while paying insufficient attention to cognitive and belief factors at the individual level. Based on this, this paper introduces the psychological and cognitive variable of "innovative belief" to systematically examine its impact mechanism on blockbuster product R&D capability.

Taking the R&D team of …

Border Perceptions: Security And Immigration In The South Texas Borderlands, Carla Angulo-Pasel, Mi-Son Kim, Adrien A. Halliez

School of Political Science, Public Affairs, Legal and Security Studies Faculty Publications

With the Trump administration, we witnessed a hardening of border security policy and practices. Trump used his leadership and celebrity to explicitly attack and criminalize “undocumented” migrants with a discourse of threat, danger, invasion, crisis. Policywise, he took steps to further securitize the borderlands. In this paper, we examine how public opinion has differed with regards to the support or opposition to these hard security policies, especially in borderland areas when compared to the overall national population. The aim of this paper is to examine this difference by directing our attention to the Rio Grande Valley (RGV), a borderlands region …

Ethnic Dissimilarity, Ethnic Status, And Organizational Embeddedness: Climate For Inclusion As Double-Edged Sword, Debjani Ghosh, Jorge A. Gonzalez, Daan Van Knippenberg, Richard A. Rodriguez Feb 2026

Ethnic Dissimilarity, Ethnic Status, And Organizational Embeddedness: Climate For Inclusion As Double-Edged Sword, Debjani Ghosh, Jorge A. Gonzalez, Daan Van Knippenberg, Richard A. Rodriguez

Management Faculty Publications

Ethnic dissimilarity to coworkers puts individuals’ social embeddedness at work under pressure. We consider this issue from the perspective of a moderating influence of climate for inclusion in the relationship between ethnic dissimilarity and organizational embeddedness. We argue that, whereas it may seem straightforward that climate for inclusion would be associated with a weaker negative influence between ethnic dissimilarity and organizational embeddedness, team climate for inclusion is a double-edged sword. Taking the status associated with ethnic groups into account, we propose that the status equality implied by climate for inclusion has differential effects for members of high ethnic status and …

Secondary School Students' Engagement In Learning Activities: Validation Of A Short Scale, Feliciano Henriques Veiga, Zi Yang Wong, Johnmarshall Reeve, Shane Jimerson, Antonio Leite, Joan Perales, Sonia Valente, Isabel Martinez

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Student engagement is a multidimensional construct strongly associated with learning outcomes and academic success. However, its measurement remains challenging, as existing instruments often conflate engagement in learning activities with engagement in the school community. In addition, brief measures are scarce despite their increasing value, and most available instruments do not incorporate agentic engagement. Assessing student engagement in learning activities is, therefore, crucial for monitoring academic progress, identifying students at risk of dropping out, and predicting academic success. This study aimed to validate the 12-item Secondary School Student Engagement in Learning Activities: Short Scale, adapted from a higher education measure, which …

Is History Precedent?, Allison Orr Larsen Feb 2026

Is History Precedent?, Allison Orr Larsen

Faculty Publications

It has been just over three years since the Supreme Court instructed lower courts to evaluate Second Amendment challenges by examining history and tradition. And it is no secret that the courts have struggled. This Article tackles a phenomenon that is born of that struggle. Overwhelmed by the task of evaluating historical claims, lower courts instead are turning to other judges as authorities on history. They are using what I call in this Article “historical precedents”—meaning language about history from an older decision that the subsequent judge then treats as authority, not as part of a legal rule but for …

Leadership Styles And Their Impact On Employee Engagement, Commitment, And Satisfaction In Non-Profit And For-Profit Organizations, Laure-Ann Swaby Feb 2026

Leadership Styles And Their Impact On Employee Engagement, Commitment, And Satisfaction In Non-Profit And For-Profit Organizations, Laure-Ann Swaby

JWU Dissertations & Theses

As organizations face challenges in sustaining retention and development, they must analyze and implement strategies to strengthen their workforce (Hassanein & Özgit, 2022). Employees are a company's greatest asset; without them, production would halt, as their knowledge, skills, and abilities drive organizational performance and operations (Chunhui et al., 2004; Gallup, 2023). Sturm and Vera (2011) showed that employees tend to be less committed when factors such as desired leadership styles, engagement, and job satisfaction are negative within an organization. Over the past decade, turnover has increased significantly, imposing financial challenges to organizations across both the non-profit and for-profit sectors (McCrory …

Engineering Enac Constructs To Examine Pip2 And Ubiquitin Competition On Enac Regulation And Stability, Lacie Johnson Feb 2026

Engineering Enac Constructs To Examine Pip2 And Ubiquitin Competition On Enac Regulation And Stability, Lacie Johnson

Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses

The epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) plays a critical role in sodium homeostasis, fluid balance, and blood pressure regulation. ENaC activity is tightly controlled by post-translational mechanisms, including ubiquitination-mediated degradation and phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) dependent channel activation. PIP2 is a phospholipid necessary to facilitate the maximal channel opening. Previous studies suggest that intracellular PIP2 binding sites are located in proximity to ubiquitination sites on ENaC subunits, raising the possibility of PIP2 binding to influence channel stability and function. This thesis aimed to engineer and validate molecular tools capable of examining the interplay between PIP2 binding and ubiquitination in ENaC regulation. A …
