“A Story Must Be Told”: Narrative Engagement In The Lord Of The Rings, Matthew Thompson-Handell
“A Story Must Be Told”: Narrative Engagement In The Lord Of The Rings, Matthew Thompson-Handell
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Much has been written on the allusions to untold tales in The Lord of the Rings and on the effects generated by such allusions. Any judgment on the importance of these effects should be treated with caution, as little work has been done to explore just how these effects operate on a reader. Nor have these effects been placed in a wider context that considers them alongside other aspects of narrative engagement. Much work could be done on the engagement generated by narrative techniques such as suspense, curiosity, and surprise - one example is provided here with an analysis of …

With Axe, Knife, Sting, And Tooth: The Enduring Wounds Of Gawain And Frodo, Roderick E. Pratt
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Among the possible Arthurian source texts for The Lord of the Rings, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight stands out as a likely inspiration. Tolkien engaged closely with the Gawain-poet for over 50 years, and as Cossio and Fimi recently demonstrated in their archival study of the W.P. Ker Memorial Lecture, he did so concurrently with his writing of The Lord of the Rings. Tom Shippey, John Fyler, Miriam Miller, and Roger Schlobin, among other scholars, have speculated on Sir Gawain’s influence for Tolkien’s work. Miller makes the case that Sir Gawain is a definitive source for …

Expanding Ai Literacy: The 5cs Of News Literacy In The Era Of Generative Ai, Seth Ashley, Adam Maksl, Paul Cook
Expanding Ai Literacy: The 5cs Of News Literacy In The Era Of Generative Ai, Seth Ashley, Adam Maksl, Paul Cook
Journal of Media Literacy Education Pre-Prints
This article adapts the 5Cs framework of news literacy—context, creation, content, circulation, and consumption—to media environments shaped by generative artificial intelligence. We argue that prevailing discussions of AI literacy overemphasize technical or functional competencies while underemphasizing the social, cultural, political, and communicative systems in which AI operates. Drawing on previous research, we define AI literacy as knowledge of the technical, social, and ethical dimensions of AI-mediated content production, distribution, and consumption, along with the critical capacities needed to exercise agency within those processes. We show how the 5Cs can be reinterpreted for generative AI environments and integrate pedagogical implications for …
System And Automated Method For Isomorphic Concept Discovery And Cross-Domain Architectural Synthesis Via Controlled Hallucination And Reverse Constrained Mapping: Vector-Isolated Rag Pipeline And Bi-Directional Optimization Loop For Open-Domain Structural Analogy Generation., Herbert Gillis
Defensive Publications Series
An automated data processing system and computer-implemented method are disclosed for programmatically synthesizing novel structural architectures in a vacant target domain space utilizing the invariant physical or structural laws of a highly validated source domain. The system executes a generative forward loop by extracting an ordered tuple of structural and functional mechanics from a source domain, removing forward-validation lexicon filters, and enforcing aggressive semantic isolation and lexical pruning to block known industry-specific terms. Forced into a vector space void, an optimization engine or generative model synthesizes a structurally constrained neologism and an associated set of invented mechanisms. The system then …
Community-Based Water Management Through Cultural Ecosystem Services: Traditional Wisdom And Modern Adaptation In Senjoyo Spring, Indonesia, Puji Winarti, Sri Haryani, Sri Wardani, Langlang Handayani
Community-Based Water Management Through Cultural Ecosystem Services: Traditional Wisdom And Modern Adaptation In Senjoyo Spring, Indonesia, Puji Winarti, Sri Haryani, Sri Wardani, Langlang Handayani
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Small-scale freshwater ecosystems play vital ecological and cultural roles. However, community-based water management (CBWM) often lacks a clear analytical approach to integrating cultural ecosystem services (CES) and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), limiting the practical understanding of culturally grounded governance. To address this gap, this qualitative study explores the interactions between CES and TEK, analyzes their roles within CBWM, and identifies their implications for sustainable water governance. The integration between cultural value and local ecological knowledge makes Senjoyo Spring an appropriate location for this study. Data were collected through interviews with 20 key informants, field observations, forum group discussions (FGDs), and …

Introduction
Unprofessional behavior in health professions education adversely affects patient care, team functioning, communication, and learner development. Traditional professionalism curricula often focuses on elements of professionalism (eg, integrity, respect, duty) that may fail to illuminate the relational consequences of unprofessional behaviors. We developed an educational intervention that reframed professionalism through the lens of trust and entrustment.
Methods
The face-to-face intervention aimed to help learners analyze professional behaviors by examining their effects on patient safety, teamwork, and professional growth using a four-element trust framework. Beginning in February 2026, a multidisciplinary faculty /staff workgroup implemented a series of facilitated educational sessions across …

The Effects Of Restorative Practices On Student Behavior And School Climate: A Case Study, Victoria Smith, M.A.T., Donna Governor, Ph.D, Carlise Womack-Wynne, Ed.D
Current Issues in Middle Level Education
Schools have been seeking alternatives to punitive discipline measures. As an alternative, restorative practices offer healing, community, and relationships. This case study examined a middle school that had been implementing restorative practices since the 2019–2020 school year, three full years at the time of study. A mixed-methods design was used in order to investigate whether the implementation of restorative practices had resulted in a decrease of student misbehaviors and an increase in staff perceptions of school climate. Staff were interviewed (n = 19) and surveyed (n = 44). A thematic analysis was conducted on the interview data, and …

Two New Non-Parametric Item Selection Methods For Cd-Cat, Li Junjie, Zheng Huijing, Kang Chunhua, Yimu Zhang
Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation | 教育测量与评估双语期刊
Computerized adaptive testing for cognitive diagnosis (CD-CAT) is a method that combines cognitive diagnosis testing and computerized adaptive testing. Compared with traditional cognitive diagnostic tests, it is more efficient and offers more tailored insights into examinees’ knowledge state. As a core part of CD-CAT, the item selection method directly affects the accuracy and efficiency of the overall assessment. This study aims to construct two nonparametric item selection methods based on the Hamming distance nonparametric difference index (HD-NDI) and the general Hamming distance nonparametric difference index (GHD-NDI). Subsequently, the performance of the two proposed item-selection methods in CD-CAT is examined through …

‘There Is No Continuity’: Assessment Of Pre-Service Teachers' Ability To Analyse Historical Sources In Two Ghanaian Public Universities, Anitha Oforiwah Adu-Boahen
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
The paper examined student-teachers’ understanding of change and continuity in History. Using a convergent parallel mixed method approach, one hundred and thirty-five (135) student-teachers from two public universities examined images depicting classroom settings in Ghana’s educational system from different periods. Respondents were expected to show and explain the continuities and changes in the different periods in Ghanaian history. They were to focus on the disparities in ‘change’ and ‘continuities’ in classroom settings in the Ghanaian educational system over time. Again, student-teachers were expected to transform their knowledge of these changes into historical understanding by writing an interpretation from the sources. …

The End Of Unmeasured Exploitation: How A.S.M., C.A.S., And S.I.A. Challenge Digital Attention Capitalism, Delante Clark
Graduate Scholarship and Creative Works
Digital attention capitalism generates value through the capture and monetization of human attention, yet it has historically lacked standardized mechanisms for measuring attention-related harm. This paper argues that the Attention Safeguard Models (A.S.M.), Cognitive Attentional Standards (C.A.S.), and Sociological Impact Assessment (S.I.A.) collectively challenge this system by introducing an integrated framework for classifying, measuring, and evaluating digital attention harm and its societal consequences. C.A.S. provides standardized measurement of digital attention harm, A.S.M. identifies and classifies patterns of attentional disruption and manipulation, and S.I.A. evaluates broader impacts on institutions, communities, civic engagement, education, social cohesion, and inequality. Together, these systems transform …

Machine-Checked Consistency Of A Buddhist Classification: Lean Theorems For The Abhidhamma's 89 And 121 Types Of Consciousness — Formal Verification Of A Class–Feature Incidence Structure Against Both Stated Projections, With Mutation Testing, Thon Ly
Defensive Publications Series
This paper reports a machine-checked consistency test of a classification that its source states twice, once feature by feature and once class by class. The source is chapters 1–3 of the Abhidhammattha-saṅgaha, a standard manual of the Theravāda Buddhist Abhidhamma, which classifies consciousness into 89 types (121 when the supramundane types are reckoned by meditative absorption) and states which of 52 mental factors combine with each type. In the Lean 4 theorem prover, a nine-clause generator builds the types as a product of chapter 1's classification axes, and eighteen rules over those axes, none naming an individual type, assign each …
Brand Identity As Architecture: The B-Heart Logo, B-Prefix Naming, Heartbeat Animation As Display Of A Proof-Of-Humanity Attestation, And Aura-Color Two-Ledger State Primitive — Rotated-Heart Bistable Logo, Single-Letter Product Prefix, Logo Animation Bound To Proof-Of-Personhood Attestation, And Avatar Ring Color From Balance Zero-Crossing Frequency, Thon Ly
Defensive Publications Series
This paper discloses a brand-identity system in which each element of a logo does functional work beyond recognition. (I) A logo made by rotating an unmodified heart silhouette 45° clockwise, so that it reads at once as a heart and as the capital letter B — a reading that survives at favicon size because it depends on no internal whitespace. (II) A product-naming convention in which every product takes a one-letter prefix that is the logo's own letter reading, so the prefix cannot come apart from the mark. (III) A logo animation with a cardiac morphology — two pulses, the …

Veteran Community Online Mindfulness Support (Vet-Coms): Feasibility And Acceptability Of A Community-Based Support Program For Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress, Maria Danet Bluhm
Sigma Foundation for Nursing Research Grant Reports
Veteran Community Online Mindfulness Support (Vet-COMS) is a four-week virtual mindfulness training program with community support for veterans experiencing post-traumatic stress symptoms. This study aims to test the feasibility and acceptability of Vet-COMS among veterans. Mindfulness meditation will help relax and calm their minds and help them cope better with their daily stressors and post-traumatic stress symptoms. The goal is to equip veterans with a stress-reduction tool, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic where imposed social distancing may stress the veterans and disallow them the community support needed. The ultimate objective is for veterans to practice daily mindfulness meditation to help …
Impact Of A Head-To-Toe Assessment Simulation On The Self-Efficacy Of First Semester Nursing Students, Martin Dole
Impact Of A Head-To-Toe Assessment Simulation On The Self-Efficacy Of First Semester Nursing Students, Martin Dole
Nursing Faculty Publications
The transition into clinical practice presents significant challenges for first-semester nursing students, particularly related to self-efficacy and the ability to perform comprehensive patient assessments. Low self-efficacy may negatively influence clinical judgment, skill performance, and patient safety. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice project was to examine whether participation in a head-to-toe assessment simulation impacted general self-efficacy among first-semester nursing students. Guided by Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy, a quantitative, quasi-experimental, one-group pretest–posttest design was used to evaluate changes in self-efficacy following a high-fidelity simulation experience. A convenience sample of 42 first-semester Bachelor of Science in Nursing students participated in …
The Relationship Between Outdoor Recreation, Menopausal Symptoms, And Overall Well-Being, Heather Flock
The Relationship Between Outdoor Recreation, Menopausal Symptoms, And Overall Well-Being, Heather Flock
Doctorate in Kinesiology
Menopause is associated with physical, psychological, and vasomotor symptoms that can affect women’s health, quality of life, and participation in physical activity. Although physical activity has been widely recommended for managing health during menopause, the relationship between outdoor recreation, menopausal symptoms, and overall well-being has remained underexplored. This cross-sectional mixed-methods study examined the relationship between outdoor recreation participation, menopausal symptoms, and well-being while identifying barriers to participation and recommendations for recreation programming. Fifteen menopausal women completed the Greene Climacteric Scale (GCS) and participated in focus groups addressing outdoor recreation experiences, barriers, motivations, and perceived well-being. Quantitative data were analyzed using …
An Exploratory Study Of The Effects Of 8 Weeks Of Nonlinear Periodization Within Tactical Athlete Populations, Stephen Hudgins
An Exploratory Study Of The Effects Of 8 Weeks Of Nonlinear Periodization Within Tactical Athlete Populations, Stephen Hudgins
Doctorate in Kinesiology
Tactical athletes, including military personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and security professionals, must maintain high levels of physical readiness despite unpredictable schedules, demanding occupational requirements, and elevated injury risk. Traditional training models may not adequately address the need to simultaneously develop multiple components of fitness while remaining adaptable to irregular work demands. Nonlinear periodization has been proposed as a flexible training strategy capable of improving several fitness characteristics concurrently. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an eight-week nonlinear periodized training program on tactical athlete performance across multiple domains of physical fitness. A repeated-measures quantitative design …

Visitor Perceptions Of Lampenflora And Implications For Adaptive Show Cave Management: A Case Study From Ryusen-Do Cave, Japan, Kanato Ando, Kazuhide Nakajima, Shuji Watanabe, Masuo Komukai, Hidesato Kuwahara
International Journal of Speleology
Artificial lighting in show caves promotes lampenflora growth, altering cave ecosystems and posing persistent management challenges. Although various control methods have been proposed, their effectiveness and social acceptance remain context dependent. This study investigated visitors’ perceptions of lampenflora through questionnaire surveys and semi-structured interviews to explore adaptive management strategies. Results indicated that visitors generally held positive impressions of lampenflora, but these impressions became more critical after receiving information about its artificial origin and ecological impacts. At the same time, support for conservation-oriented management, including willingness to contribute financially, tended to increase following information provision. Tourism-related evaluations were more strongly associated …
