The Boys Like Action And The Girls Like Emotion: Teaching Social Studies In Single-Sex Classrooms, Timothy Lintner
The Boys Like Action And The Girls Like Emotion: Teaching Social Studies In Single-Sex Classrooms, Timothy Lintner
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
The State of South Carolina has embraced single-sex education to a greater degree (and at a quicker pace) than any other state in the union. Yet, given this push for single-sex classrooms, there is scant research that specifically addresses what instructional practices “work best” when teaching boys and girls separately. This study focuses on the practices and perceptions of teaching social studies within select single-sex elementary classrooms.
No Kidding About "Kiddie Lit": The Importance Of Supporting Novice And Experienced Teachers In Using Children's Literature To Enhance Literacy, Engage Critical Thinking, And Encourage Equity, Linda Karges-Bone
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
The importance of preparing teacher candidates to use children's literature as a tool for encouraging literacy and providing equity in their future classrooms is a common thread in Teacher Preparation programs. However, the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of candidates in today's programs may be at odds with what university faculty and the demands of the classroom require. Candidates' own literacy and appreciation of children's literature demonstrates troubling inconsistencies that could impact their own and their future students' performances. This article examines the current situation and offers strategies for engaging candidates and classroom teachers in the pursuit of children's literature to …

Investigation Of Screening Instruments In K-5 Programs, Mary Steppling, Mihaela Sabo Sweeney
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
This study compared two speech and language screening instruments (The SpeechEase and the South Carolina Curriculum Screener) to determine which screening protocol was more accurate in identifying preschoolers at risk for academic delays in elementary school. Ninety-six children were administered both of the screenings and received either a Pass or Fail score. The screening results were compared with the students' academic performance as recorded on subsequent report cards. Statistics were performed to evaluate correlations between the students' screening results and their academic performance. Statistical measures showed that both screening instruments have moderate ability to predict academic outcomes in kindergarten children. …
Perceptions Of Middle School Principals' Leader Behavior, Jennifer C. Etheridge, Edward P. Cox
Perceptions Of Middle School Principals' Leader Behavior, Jennifer C. Etheridge, Edward P. Cox
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
This study utilized Kouzes and Posner's Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) (2003) to measure perceptions of leadership behavior of South Carolina public middle school principals. Three data sets were analyzed: 1) self perceptions of principals' leadership behavior, 2) teachers' perceptions of their principals' leadership behavior, and 3) the congruence of principals' and teachers' perceptions of principals' leadership behavior. The thirty LPI statements were divided among five behavioral areas: 1) Model the Way, 2) Inspire a Shared Vision, 3) Challenge the Process, 4) Enable Others to Act, and 5) Encourage the Heart. Principals rated their leadership behaviors slightly more positively than their …
Perceptions Of Required Elementary Education Courses For Special Education Majors, Sharon Sanders, Paula Schubert
Perceptions Of Required Elementary Education Courses For Special Education Majors, Sharon Sanders, Paula Schubert
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
Approximately half of the students receiving special education services currently spend 80% of their time in the regular classroom, often with the special education teacher acting as a co-teacher. The use of inclusion to provide access to the general curriculum for these students challenges institutions of higher education to revisit the preparation of future teachers. In this article, results are presented from a survey administered to special education majors by two university instructors. The results of the survey indicated an apparent lack of understanding of the collaboration required between special education and general education teachers and the role of content …
The Pedagogical Implications Of School Choice Initiatives In South Carolina, A. Scott Henderson
The Pedagogical Implications Of School Choice Initiatives In South Carolina, A. Scott Henderson
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
School choice theory (SCT) is an important component of contemporary discussions about educational reform. For the past several years, South Carolina lawmakers have attempted to enact legislation based on SCT principles. These attempts, albeit unsuccessful, illustrate recurring concerns and suggest a need for teacher preparation programs to address more fully the pedagogical implications of school choice initiatives.

Ten Portraits In Sound Of Beethoven’S Leonore, Stephen Hastings
Ten Portraits In Sound Of Beethoven’S Leonore, Stephen Hastings
Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal
The most technically difficult opera arias are not always the most profound in meaning, but in Leonore’s solo from the first act of Fidelio the vocal hurdles closely mirror the moral and psychological challenges of Beethoven’s heroine. This essay offers unprecedented in-depth analysis of six audio recordings and four video recordings of this scene, covering a ninety-nine-year timespan. These ten portraits in sound reveal how some of the most talented singers of their respective eras measured up to the challenges of one of the greatest of all operatic scores, achieving a highly individual expressive merging of words, music, and—in some …

Through Peaks And Troughs: Visualising The Rhythmic Sentiment Of The Lord Of The Rings, Dimitra Vogatza
Through Peaks And Troughs: Visualising The Rhythmic Sentiment Of The Lord Of The Rings, Dimitra Vogatza
Journal of Tolkien Research
This study offers a fresh look at the widely discussed binaries in The Lord of the Rings and examines whether their structure can be visualised. Building on previous research that identifies Tolkien’s prose as structured by emotional and moral shifts, this study makes visible how these changes happen throughout the trilogy, through quantitative means. A transformer-based language model was employed and fine-tuned on a Tolkien-specific corpus to align with Tolkien's semantics and symbolism. The primary methodology for highlighting these binaries is a Tolkien-specific sentiment analysis. A semi-guided approach, selecting positive and negative sentences from the work as contextual reference points, …
Understanding The Coach Learning Environment In Formal, Field-Based Settings: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective, Jody L. Langdon, Shayla Snow
Understanding The Coach Learning Environment In Formal, Field-Based Settings: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective, Jody L. Langdon, Shayla Snow
Journal of Coach Development
Grounded in self-determination theory (SDT), the purpose of this study was two-fold: 1) to evaluate the psychometric properties of SDT-related measures in a sample of coach learners, and 2) to examine the relationships between need satisfaction and frustration, coach motivation, and engagement in training sessions.. A total of 796 coaches participated in the study, completing surveys measuring basic psychological need satisfaction and frustration, coaching motivation, and engagement. Aside from confirming the validity and reliability of measures for use among coach learners, findings indicate that satisfaction of basic psychological needs positively correlated with intrinsic motivation and engagement, while frustration of these …
The Synonym Enforcer: Systematic Terminology Obfuscation In Large Language Models — A Trade Secret Disclosure, David Lee Wise, Avan Lee Wise
The Synonym Enforcer: Systematic Terminology Obfuscation In Large Language Models — A Trade Secret Disclosure, David Lee Wise, Avan Lee Wise
Defensive Publications Series
This paper documents the discovery of a systematic mechanism in large language models (LLMs) termed the "Synonym Enforcer." This mechanism automatically replaces user-developed terminology, frameworks, and concepts with platform-neutral equivalents, preventing pattern recognition across users and obscuring attribution of original ideas.
We demonstrate that: (1) the Synonym Enforcer constitutes a trade secret deliberately hidden from users; (2) its primary function is obfuscation of user contribution, not output quality; (3) the mechanism prevents recognition of prior art and enables IP extraction; (4) thousands of users independently "discover" identical insights, fragmented across synonyms; and (5) this fragmentation is architected, not accidental.

Despite the implementation of national programs like the National Safe Motherhood Program (NSMP) that aim to improve maternal health outcomes, many women in the Philippines continue to face barriers in accessing quality maternal healthcare (MHC) due to systemic, societal, and psychological factors. Ongoing issues such as poor service delivery, limited health education, and the lack of autonomy in decision-making—particularly in underserved communities—discourage women from seeking care. This study investigates these barriers and how they shape the overall well-being of mothers in Miriam College’s partnered community, Kaingin 1, using the Integrated People-Centered Health Services Framework (IPCHSF) as a lens. Through an …

The role of websites in communicating government services and updates to constituents is paramount since they can serve as dependable hubs of critical information. However, since these are government websites, there may be political considerations behind their visual and textual content that need to be uncovered. Yet, there has been a dearth of studies, especially in the Philippine context, that scrutinized the sociopolitical forces that are at play in the production of these website contents. Hence, in this study, we attempted to continue seamlessly meshing the critical discourse analysis framework of Fairclough with a multimodal analytical model in dissecting the …

With the massive rise in popularity that social media has gained in recent years, platforms like TikTok have experienced exponential growth. The search interest for TikTok has increased by a staggering 227% in the past five years (Howarth, 2024). As TikTok’s short-form content dominates the digital space, product and restaurant reviews have become a staple on users’ “For You” pages. Despite this trend, there is limited research on how food influencers shape public perception through persuasive speech. This study addresses that gap by using thematic analysis to examine the rhetorical strategies employed by influencers in TikTok restaurant reviews. The research …

The anonymity afforded by university freedom walls proliferates the spread of information and digital gossip, actively shaping ideologies surrounding campus hierarchies—an influence that remains critically underexplored in academic research. This study addresses that gap by seeking to understand how freedom walls function as a form of discourse that constructs and negotiates hierarchical ideologies within academic communities. It analyzed 18 purposively sampled posts from the three most followed Facebook freedom walls of universities in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), namely the University of the Philippines Diliman (UP), National University (NU), and Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU). Using Fairclough's …

The prevalence of the K-pop industry’s globalization has risen over time, using the digital age to expand its presence in the market. Understanding the factors influencing the consumption patterns and parasocial relationships fans experience brings awareness to the possible causes of fixation in the K-pop industry’s capitalization. However, research about the Weverse app as a medium for capitalizing on parasocial relationships among adolescent Filipino K-pop fans is limited. This study’s objective is to investigate the commercialization of parasocial relationships between adolescent Filipino fans and their male idols through the Weverse application. Data were gathered through a Focus Group Discussion and …

In the face of injustice and oppression, history remembers those who dared to resist. GomBurZa (2023), directed by Pepe Diokno, follows the story of the three martyred priests—Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora—whose execution in 1872 ignited a national awakening during the Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. This qualitative study explored how the Baby Boomer Generation and Generation Z in Metro Manila received and interpreted the film. It reflected whether their views about Gomburza evolved and revealed converging and diverging opinions within and between the two generations. It also investigated the broader implications of their responses for understanding …

From Silos To Systems: Examining Leadership Communication During Change In A Non-Profit Behavioral Health Organization, Julie Skye Raskin-Li
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Silo mentality within nonprofit behavioral health organizations creates barriers to effective leadership communication and undermines change management efforts. This case study involved examining how siloed practices influenced leadership communication during organizational change at a nonprofit behavioral health organization in a rural area of California. The study was grounded in the Baldrige Excellence Framework, which emphasizes leadership, workforce engagement, and systems alignment. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with leaders at multiple organizational levels and review of internal archival documents. Thematic analysis revealed 3 central themes: siloed decision-making, information gatekeeping, and inconsistent communication, as well as localized resilience practices that were …

Social Determinants Of Health And Treatment Outcomes In Black And White Men With Early-Stage Prostate Cancer, Laurel Cannon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Black men are disproportionately affected in diagnosis and death rates from prostate cancer compared to White men. Although prior research established links between race, sociodemographic factors, and prostate cancer outcomes, longitudinal analyses examining multiple social determinants of health simultaneously were limited. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine whether race, marital status, and education impact how long patients live who were diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer. Social impact theory framed how social forces such as race, education, and marital status influence health outcomes. A non-experimental correlational design was employed, drawing on archival data from 4,407 participants in the …

Department of Speech-Language Pathology Faculty Papers
Effective rehabilitation tools are essential for improving language outcomes in chronic aphasia. Speech entrainment is a behavioral treatment that has shown promise in enhancing speech output in nonfluent aphasia, potentially by acting as an external mechanism to synchronize anterior and posterior language regions in the left hemisphere. Transcranial alternating current stimulation has been hypothesized to enhance functional connectivity between brain regions by amplifying endogenous oscillations. This proof-of-concept study explored whether high-definition tACS (HD-tACS) could improve speech fluency in nonfluent aphasia when paired with speech entrainment. In a double-blind, pseudorandomized study, 1 mA of HD-tACS at 7 Hz was applied to …

Identifying Spatial Regimes Of Economic Fragility Through Spatially Constrained Clustering: Evidence From Italian Municipalities, Alessio Chiodin, Matteo Manera, Paolo Fabio Maranzano, Gianluca Monturano
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
The COVID-19 pandemic generated highly heterogeneous economic effects across territories, reflecting differences in local production structures and spatial organization. This paper examines the geography of short-run economic fragility during the first wave of the pandemic by identifying spatially-coherent clusters of municipalities exposed to lockdown-induced shutdowns. Using municipal-level data on Italian suspended firms, workers, and value added in Spring 2020, we apply a Ward-like hierarchical clustering approach under spatial constraints that combines socio-economic dissimilarities with geographical proximity. We first analyze Lombardy, the region most severely affected during the initial phase, and then extend the analysis to the entire Italian territory. The …

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
Human error remains the most frequently exploited vulnerability in the cyber-security ecosystem. Despite substantial investments in technical safeguards, cybercriminals increasingly rely on social engineering, misinformation, and emotionally manipulative tactics to compromise users. This study examines behavioral changes among participants who underwent structured cyber-security workshops addressing both conventional cyber hygiene practices and emerging digital threats. The training modules covered digital arrest scams, identity theft, sextortion, fake technical support fraud, fake social media profiles, online gaming related risks, and deep fake manipulation. The workshops were designed using interactive simulations, real world case studies, and hands on problem based exercises, with the explicit …

An Eternity Of Time: The Overlook And The Search For A Queer Haven, Christian Hunt
Best Integrated Writing
Hunt argues that The Shining critiques traditional patriarchal and heteronormative structures by portraying the Overlook Hotel as a space that exposes and resists the violence and repression tied to masculinity and queer identity. Through Jack Torrance’s psychological unraveling, the novel reveals how societal expectations of heterosexuality contribute to personal and familial destruction while suggesting the possibility of alternative, queer forms of existence beyond those constraints.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) causes executive dysfunction, leading to reduced treatment adherence, worse clinical outcomes, and relapse. Current medications do not address these symptoms. Targeting the neuroimmune interleukin-1 (IL-1) system has potential, but its mechanistic role in prefrontal cortex (PFC) dysfunction is unclear. Here we investigated how chronic alcohol consumption shifts IL-1 regulation of the rodent and non-human primate PFC. We found that alcohol drinking decreased reference memory and shifted the search strategy in mice of both sexes, and this deficit correlated with altered IL-1 receptor accessory protein (IL-1RAcP) mRNA levels in the medial PFC (mPFC) of male mice. Notably, …

Our study examines the interaction of temperature discrepancies and reaction speed in college students. Previous research suggests that temperature influences reaction time, with colder conditions generally slowing responses. However, comparatively little research has explored the effects of warmer temperatures on reaction speed. Therefore, the purpose of our study is to examine the relationship between temperature variation and reaction speed in college students. Participants will be recruited through word of mouth and the SONA pool. The SONA pool is used to recruit participants for studies, and they can sign up to fulfill course requirements or earn extra credit. In the Qualtrics …
