Advancing The Alabama Black Belt Food Corridor: A Stakeholder-Driven Approach Through The Alabama Black Belt Food Systems Alliance, Kristin Woods, Tana Shealey
Professional Agricultural Workers Journal
A convergence of factors led to the need to bring together a diverse group of stakeholders to empower small-scale farmers in the Alabama Black Belt Region to safely scale up operations and access new markets. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is renewed interest from government, producers, and consumers in strengthening local and regional food systems. This has led to a greater number of wholesale and retail market opportunities for farmers in the region. A newly formed Alabama Black Belt Food Systems Alliance (ABBFSA) endeavored to gather stakeholders to advance the Black Belt Food Corridor (BBFC) food system. …

Opioid Overdose Associations In The United States Among Pregnant And Postpartum Women During 2019-2023, Permecia Winston-Dixon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The rising trend of opioid-involved overdose deaths among pregnant and postpartum women in the United States from 2019 to 2023 represents a pressing public health issue. This population faces increasing risk due to opioid use and co-occurring mental health conditions, yet remains underrepresented in research. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the association between opioid involvement among pregnancy-associated overdose deaths, while controlling for pandemic periods (pre-COVID: 2019, peak COVID: 2020–2021, post-peak COVID: 2022–2023). Grounded in the syndemic theory, this study addressed two research questions Grounded in syndemic theory, this study addressed two research questions focused on opioid-involved …

Level 1 Stabilization: Managing Nursing Trauma In Critical And Acute Care, Leslie Okhirkhian
DNP and Student Works
High-acuity environments (emergency departments and critical care units) do not hold a monopoly on trauma, and it is not limited solely to the experience from the perspective of the patient. Nurses routinely mobilize in response to life-threatening events, detouring resource and attention in a coordinated effort to stabilize critically ill patients. Though essential for patient survival, the cumulative psychological burden of such events on nurses is often disregarded or dismissed. Repeated exposure to mortality and emotionally charged clinical presentations can lead to burnout, compassion fatigue, and moral distress. Yet the burden of resilience is often placed on the individual nurse. …

Beyond The Survey: Performance Assessments For Higher-Order Sustainability Literacy In Higher Education, Gregory Vincent Massara, Courtney B. Ryan, Mary Ellen Mallia
Educational Policy & Leadership Other Graduate Student Scholarship
Purpose This study explores how a performance-based assessment measures students’ higher-order sustainability competencies in ways that multiple-choice or scaled-survey tools, common ways to assess sustainability literacy, may not.
Design/Methodology/Approach This exploratory case study created a performance task for a first-year honors writing and critical inquiry course. Students (n=9) analyzed a scenario across environmental, social, and economic domains. A rubric measured students’ abilities to address all three domains and articulate a feasible and balanced solution supported by credible evidence.
Findings Students demonstrated proficiency in defining the three sustainability domains but tended to struggle to balance them. Choosing scenarios in familiar local …
Edges That Touch, Tommi Bonomo
Edges That Touch, Tommi Bonomo
LSU Master's Theses
Gender, a social construct, exists on a spectrum that is shaped by social, cultural, and embodied experience. Edges That Touch examines the instability of gender through the lens of combat sports, focusing on the way the hypermasculine environment abstracts femme identities. Informed by my lived experience, the work investigates the paradox in which empowerment and alienation coexist and destabilizes gender binaries.
Edges That Touch uses experimental graphic design processes and mixed media to recreate the psychological landscape and emotional realities that I navigated as a cisgender woman in the world of combat sports. I use visual techniques that obscure legibility …
Teachers' Perspectives On The Inclusion Of Children With Autism In Preschool And Kindergarten Programs Within Inclusive Classrooms In Saudi Arabia, Budur Alsalamah
Teachers' Perspectives On The Inclusion Of Children With Autism In Preschool And Kindergarten Programs Within Inclusive Classrooms In Saudi Arabia, Budur Alsalamah
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, Saudi Arabia has witnessed a significant increase in the number of students with autism being integrated into mainstream classrooms. This is thanks to laws and regulations enacted to provide appropriate education for students with special needs, particularly those with autism, in less restrictive environments. This is a positive step towards providing equal educational opportunities for students with special needs. However, teachers' views on integrating children with autism into mainstream education remain varied. Studies have shown that teachers with positive attitudes towards inclusion are more likely to provide inclusive education in the classroom (Dev & Hayes, 2015). This …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Romantic relationships are important contexts for substance use and emotional well-being. We tested the hypotheses that (i) genetic predispositions for alcohol consumption would be positively associated with partner substance use, (ii) partner substance use would moderate genetic influences on one's own alcohol outcomes, and (iii) partner discordance in substance use would be associated with lower emotional well-being and relationship quality.
METHODS: Analyses included 2,357 participants (M
RESULTS: Participant PGS
CONCLUSIONS: The results highlight the importance of partner substance use in etiological models of alcohol use, emotional health outcomes, and relationship quality.

Parental expectations significantly shape adolescents' emotional well-being and self-perception, especially in Philippine culture, where family honor and obligations are expected. Perceived parental disappointment can lead to emotional distress, anxiety, and self-doubt, affecting self-esteem and personal development. While much of the existing research focuses on parental perspectives, there is little research and understanding of how adolescents internalize these experiences. This study examines the narratives of Filipino adolescents on perceived parental disappointment, highlighting its emotional and psychological effects. This study utilized interviews in order to collect the lived experiences of Filipino adolescents aged 18-19, residing in Binan and Sta. Rosa, Laguna. Through …

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
The rapid expansion of name, image, and likeness (NIL) opportunities has reshaped the U.S. college sport landscape, yet limited research has examined how NIL engagement affects athlete identity and well-being. This study investigates the relationships among NIL engagement, identity salience, and stress. Survey data were collected from 351 Division I athletes across four major conferences. Regression analyses indicated that greater NIL commitment was associated with heightened athlete identity salience and increased NIL-related stress. NIL satisfaction emerged as a protective factor, predicting lower stress, whereas perceptions of fairness were not significantly related to stress. Brief open-ended survey responses provided explanatory context, …

Globalization has significantly impacted economies worldwide, presenting both business opportunities and challenges. In the Philippines, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are vital economic drivers. However, despite their importance, MSMEs often face systemic barriers such as limited capital, restricted market access, and insufficient institutional support. This study, grounded in Sarasvathy’s Effectuation Theory—which emphasizes leveraging existing means, minimizing risks, forming partnerships, and embracing uncertainty—investigates how Filipino micro-entrepreneurs navigate decision-making under resource constraints. Unlike traditional predictive models, effectuation is more suited to uncertain environments. This research examines Filipino entrepreneurial experiences that would validate the application of effectuation principles in the Philippine context …

Preservice teachers often lack confidence in classroom assessment, highlighting the need for robust tools to measure assessment self-efficacy. The Classroom Assessment Self-Efficacy Survey (CASES) was designed to address this need. It comprises 24 items across two subscales: Evaluating Others’ Confidence (EOC) and Personal Performance Confidence (PPC). This study examined the psychometric properties of CASES using 223 responses from preservice teachers. Rasch modeling and other statistical techniques were applied to evaluate validity evidence based on response processes, internal structure, and relations to other variables. Results showed that CASES functioned as intended. Rating scale use was consistent with expectations, and reliability and …
Early Childhood Pre-Service Teachers' Perceptions Of Scientists At Work, Tenisha L. Powell, Susan Green
Early Childhood Pre-Service Teachers' Perceptions Of Scientists At Work, Tenisha L. Powell, Susan Green
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
Early childhood teachers play a vital role in creating young children’s perceptions about science and scientists. Stereotypical perceptions of scientists and science may be detrimental to young children because these beliefs limit the possibility that science is accessible to all. To assist children in broadening their thinking about science, teachers must first gain knowledge about their own beliefs and perceptions. Several researchers have found that "teachers tend to teach in the same ways in which they were taught when they were students" (Finson, Thomas & Pedersen, 2006). In this study, 33 early childhood pre-service teachers were asked to "draw a …

The multi-user virtual environment (MUVE), known as Second Life (SL™) has been used extensively for educational purposes. Yet less studied are applications of this environment to health education topics. Equally lacking are clear instructions to guide the educator in both establishing this useful learning environment, and an application of the environment to educational topics that can be difficult to discuss face to face. The objectives for this manuscript include the development of an understanding of the technical parameters necessary to use Second Life, and methods to apply sexual health education content within the Second Life virtual world. The Boys Like Action And The Girls Like Emotion: Teaching Social Studies In Single-Sex Classrooms, Timothy Lintner
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
The State of South Carolina has embraced single-sex education to a greater degree (and at a quicker pace) than any other state in the union. Yet, given this push for single-sex classrooms, there is scant research that specifically addresses what instructional practices “work best” when teaching boys and girls separately. This study focuses on the practices and perceptions of teaching social studies within select single-sex elementary classrooms.
No Kidding About "Kiddie Lit": The Importance Of Supporting Novice And Experienced Teachers In Using Children's Literature To Enhance Literacy, Engage Critical Thinking, And Encourage Equity, Linda Karges-Bone
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
The importance of preparing teacher candidates to use children's literature as a tool for encouraging literacy and providing equity in their future classrooms is a common thread in Teacher Preparation programs. However, the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of candidates in today's programs may be at odds with what university faculty and the demands of the classroom require. Candidates' own literacy and appreciation of children's literature demonstrates troubling inconsistencies that could impact their own and their future students' performances. This article examines the current situation and offers strategies for engaging candidates and classroom teachers in the pursuit of children's literature to …

Perceptions Of Required Elementary Education Courses For Special Education Majors, Sharon Sanders, Paula Schubert
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
Approximately half of the students receiving special education services currently spend 80% of their time in the regular classroom, often with the special education teacher acting as a co-teacher. The use of inclusion to provide access to the general curriculum for these students challenges institutions of higher education to revisit the preparation of future teachers. In this article, results are presented from a survey administered to special education majors by two university instructors. The results of the survey indicated an apparent lack of understanding of the collaboration required between special education and general education teachers and the role of content …
